书面表达
Dear Paul,
Thank you very much for inviting me to attend the “Chinese Culture Day” to be held at your school this Saturday. I have been looking forward to it. I believe it will give your students more ideas about Chinese culture and will be great fun.
However, much to my regret, I shall not be able to make it now. Owing to the fact that my grandpa suddenly fell ill and is in hospital, I have to go there immediately and attend to him on Saturday. I’m awfully sorry for the sudden change of plan and feel it a great pity to miss the opportunity to be with your students. Hopefully, I will have another chance to join you in the future.
Once again, I am sorry for any inconvenience caused. I wish the activity a great success. I do hope that all the teachers and students can have fun and have a deeper understanding of Chinese culture.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

Text 10
【原文】A Russian man named Ham has always been interested in constructing things out of glass bottles. Not long ago, he built a unique house which was built almost entirely of wine bottles.
His children had always admired his work. They encouraged him to build a house someday.
But he always thought it was impossible. When Ham lost his seconds on, who passed away at the age of 18, he finally decided to build the house in the boy’s memory. So he started the search for suitable materials. To construct the 99-square-metre house, Ham spent about three years collecting over 12, 000 empty bottles. Ham believes that the house is quite strong and expected to stand for at least 100 years! In fact, he has built it in such a way that if some of the bottles break, they can easily be replaced. More interestingly, the house cost five times less than it would cost to build a house with regular materials. But Ham says he wasn’t thinking about the money. He just wanted to build the house in the way his son wanted. Ham gave away his piece of work to his eldest son as a wedding present. His daughter-in-law is quite proud of the house, and says she can’t wait to decorate it.

I met a beautiful soul yesterday. I went to work with my computer to a local café so that I could have dinner there. It was raining a bit this time and also I was among people. Sometimes when you work from home all day this is in itself a treat. And the magic of the connection sometimes happens—a smile, someone offering you the newspaper, a short conversation with the staff, a peace dove flying past and lots of possibilities for love and kindness.
Well, magic did happen. I heard a man who was speaking with difficulty and very loud. I noticed he could not speak so clearly and he had some kind of impairment(损伤). As often happens, people looked at him or avoided doing so, and then—as if embarrassed or afraid—looked down. In these cases I try to do the opposite. I imagined a person in these situations would want to feel integrated( 融入群体).
So I decided to deliberately(故意地) look at him and smile. It was an instant(瞬间)! He looked at me, smiled and immediately said hello. With a combination of spoken and body language he asked if he could approach me. I agreed. He introduced me to his friend who taught sign language online and explained that they were both deaf, after which he even told me about his wife and how he loved teaching. I apologized for not knowing sign language and hoped I’d learned. We still managed to have a beautiful“conversation” which made us all very happy. I'm sure we’ll meet again to experience the magic of being with others.
24. Why did the author go to the café yesterday
A. To find someone beautiful.
B. To work and eat something.
C. To ask for a latest newspaper.
D. To have a short talk with others.
25. What’s the most important to a disabled person
A. Being included into normal life.
B. Accepting help from people around.
C. Avoiding the embarrassments in life.
D. Having a friend in the same situation.
26. How did the author react to the man with speaking difficulty
A. He pretended not to see him.
B. He had a joke with him.
C. He looked and smiled at him.
D. He laughed at him like others.
27. What could be the best title for the text
A. A Special Café B. A Broken Heart
C. Power of Sign Language D. Magic at the Café
C
Most of us probably cannot imagine modern life without social media, which has both the potential to negatively impact our mental and emotional health if used blindly and the ability to connect us in many unexpected ways.
With social media, friendships go beyond geography. We are able to find friends old and new, thus maintaining old friendships and making new ones. Some would question the quality of these friendships, but perhaps what is important is that a link exists between you and that person. Then, we can possibly build friendships upon this link in the future.
But social media does consume(消耗) our energy and lower our self-esteem(自尊心) at times. A 2013 study by Ethan Kross and Philippe Verduyn, published by the Public Library of Science, found that the more a person uses Facebook, the more miserable (痛苦的)he feels about his own life. Essena O’Neill, an Internet celebrity(名人), recently announced to quit (停止)social media, saying it is“not real life”. Taking countless photos just to look great in a single post and seeking social approval from“likes”and“views”have left her feeling“empty”.
However, those affected are usually teenagers who have shaky(不稳定的) self-identities(自我认同). It is only natural for teenagers to seek popularity and social recognition. But, for every teenager who feels jealous(嫉妒的), envious(羡慕的) or depressed(抑郁的) online, there is another who chooses to feel energetic, inspired and accepted by positive social connections.
From what perspective do we wish to approach social media Social media does not cause unhappiness; it simply provides an alternative platform for teenagers to experiment with, as they grow up, something they have always done offline. Teen activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai says,“What is interesting is the power and the impact of social media…So we must try to use social media in a good way.”
28. Which best describes the impact of social media on friendships
A. It helps build friendships across distance.
B. It improves the quality of new friendships.
C. It only has a short-term impact on friendships.
D. It makes it harder to maintain old friendships.
29. Why does the author mention“a study”and“a celebrity” in Paragraph 3
A. To explain a rule. B. To make a prediction.
C. To present a fact. D. To prove an argument.
30. What's the author’s attitude towards teenagers using social media
A. Positive. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.
31. What may be discussed in the next part of this passage
A. Demand for advances in social media.
B. The wide applications of social media.
C. Advice on using social media positively.
D. The possible harm of social media to users.

Recently, a design student has developed an auto-mini robot—A’seedbot that can search through vast deserts, sowing seeds (种子) when it finds a suitable area to plant a tree.
The A'seedbot, created by Mazyar Etehadi from the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation, could be a new and creative way to transform deserts into greenery.“Planting trees in the desert area can keep the sand and protect the environment,” said Etehadi. It was launched at the Global Grad Show(GGS), an event that has designers come together to showcase(展示) innovations(创新) that could solve today’s environmental issues.
In an area where high temperatures are limiting life, the importance of growing plants is crucial(关键的). Measuring just eight inches long, the tiny robot is equipped with its own solar panels(太阳能板), allowing it to charge during the day and continue working through the night. It can operate all on its own, using its 3D-printed legs to search for viable spots to plant a seed. In doing so, designers seek to understand how roots work and also to design sensors(传感器) that might monitor (监测) soil pollution, prospect(勘探) for minerals and look for water.
The robot has a distance sensor that it uses to send reports back to its controller. The only time humans need to step in is to refill the robot with more seeds.“I think it was an easy solution to come up with, but no one had made it, and here comes my idea! It means a lot to the people who have been fighting against the deserts for generations,” said Etehadi. Going forward, he hopes his idea can be adopted by the government, the farming industry, and private individuals as a more efficient way to grow plants.
32. Why did Etehadi develop the A’seedbot
A. To lower the temperature. B. To protect the trees.
C. To turn the desert into greenery. D. To win the prize in the GGS.
33. What can we know about the A’seedbot
A. It can work around the clock. B. It is powered by electricity.
C. It monitors minerals and water. D. It can refill itself with seeds.
34. Which of the following can replace the underlined word“viable” in Paragraph 3
A. Distant. B. Empty. C. Dry. D. Suitable.
35. What is the passage mainly about
A. A project for creation.
B. A robot for sowing seeds.
C. A student gifted in design.
D. A proposal(提议) for environmental protection

Field trips(实地考察) have now become a popular and well-established(由来已久的) method of education. A field trip is a journey organized by schools or educational institutions to a place outside of the classroom. 36 Therefore, the activities during a field trip are often designed to provide them with hands-on experiences.
Field trips can be taken to a variety of destinations. The most popular ones include museums, factories, zoos and botanical gardens. Field trips can also involve visits to historical sites and other places of interest. Sometimes even an outing to a park nearby can make a good field trip. 37_______
Field trips help improve academic performance. Participants in a field trip are engaged in various activities about a subject matter. 38 They could also pick up new knowledge through observation and interaction. Studies provide evidence that field trips can increase students’ test scores.
39 During a field trip, students are exposed to interactive activities and novel experiences that are not often available in a classroom, which awakens their interest and helps them rediscover the joy in study. This may be particularly important for students who are struggling academically.
A field trip can be challenging to organize due to factors such as high costs and safety concerns. 40 Teachers regard this outing as a good way of helping students and developing a good relationship with them. Students, moreover, may remember the experience of the school field trip as a highlight of the school year.
A. Field trips also promote a love of learning. B. That is why field trips are in decline in recent years. C. In this way, they could gain a better understanding of it. D. It is intended to help students learn in a real-world context. E. The quality of a field trip always depends on its destination. F. Still, it is believed that a well-chosen field trip is worth the difficulties. G. Whatever the destination is, the key is to make sure the trip is practical.
