A teenager needs to have a sense of independence in their life to feel secure (安全的). To some teenagers independence means a lot to them, and I think that some parents don’t allow their teenagers enough independence.
Independence has something to do with freedom. Some kids are not allowed to go anywhere alone, and the only thing their schedule includes is going to school, coming home, going to sleep, and repeating the process the next day. Parents tend to be afraid that their kids can get hurt if they go outside into the world. But if parents control their kids too much, they may never learn to live on their own. The best way for a teenager to learn lesson is through experience. I think it is beneficial for teenagers to have freedom.
Teenagers’ lack of freedom can also stop them from having good friendship at school. Some might say this is a good thing, because it helps them focus more on their school work. I argue that this can only discourage them not to do their school work. Some parents do not allow their children to be around their friends outside the school, thinking that this will get them into trouble. But I don’t think so. Instead, isn’t this a good reason for parents to get their children a cellphone Cellphones allow teenagers to stay in touch with their parents, and communicate with friends.
Privacy is another issue between parents and their teenagers. Teenagers tend to enjoy relaxation by themselves in their own room. This also gives them a sense of independence. It often annoys teenagers when their parents enter their room when they are not home. I know that my mom always goes in my room when I’m not home, and this has brought me to the point where I have asked many times to get a lock on my door.
24. What is the main idea of the second paragraph
A. Kids have a dull routine every day B. It benefits teenagers to have freedom.
C. Some parents allow their kids no freedom. D. Kids know how to live independently.
25. From the author’s point of view, ________.
A. it is unnecessary for a kid to have a cellphone
B. kids should focus on the school work
C. parents should make it easy for kids to communicate with their friends
D. good friendships between kids harm their school work
26. How do teenagers usually feel when their parents enter their rooms in their absence
A angry B. lucky C. disappointed D. calm
27. The author hopes to have her door locked in order to ________.
A. Stop thieves from going in B. Protect herself from any harm
C. prevent her mother entering her room D. keep her father from reading her dairy

Potential end to sales of gasoline cars in China could benefit makers of electric cars, and suppliers of spare parts and power management solutions in the long run, analysts said.
Policymakers have been suggesting a possible timetable soon for getting rid of cars that use gasoline as fuel from the China market. For instance, Xin Guobin, deputy head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at a news conference in early September that authorities are studying a timetable for stopping sales of gasoline cars in China.
At another conference on power and battery development, Xin said that the development of high-efficiency special batteries is key to the development of e-vehicles in China.
Wang Chuanfu, president of BYD, China’s largest e-car maker, said in a recent interview that he estimated sales of gasoline cars will likely end in 2030.
According to a report by China International Capital Corporation Limited or CICC, large-scale production of e-vehicles and a bigger market share in the overall mobility market are inevitable in the next few years.
“Ending sales of gasoline cars is a global trend, and China is not going to fall behind,” the report said.
Norway and the Netherlands have announced they will end sales of gasoline cars in 2025. Germany and India will do so in 2030, and the UK and France in 2040.
Policies will encourage purchase and use of e-vehicles in China. For example, buyers would be offered free car plates in cities. In contrast, gasoline car owners may need to pay more than 80,000 yuan for a plate at auctions (拍卖) in Shanghai.
In the longer term, however, development of e-vehicles in China depends on battery technology improvements and charging networks, said the paper.
28. What can we infer from the passage
A. Potential end of the gasoline cars has benefited many people.
B. The government is taking action in the process of promoting electric cars.
C. Wang Chuanfu estimated sales of gasoline cars will end in 2030.
D. China will be the first country to end the gasoline cars in the near feature.
29. Which is the closest meaning of the underlined word

30. What is the author’s attitude to the electric cars
A. Supportive B. Passive C. Subjective D. Objective.

Have you been exercising and eating healthy, but when you step on the scale, it says you’ve gained a few pounds “That’s normal, and it doesn’t mean that your workouts are not effective”, says Jeffrey A. Dolgan, an exercise physiologist in Miami Beach, Florida.
“A person’s scale mass (质量) is a combination of muscle, fat, bone, blood, and even the air that we carry in our lungs,” he says. “Immediately after a workout routine, the percentage of mass in each body part can shift as much as 15 percent. So if you’re gaining weight while working out and eating healthy, it’s probably not the type of weight gain that you think it is.
The scale can’t tell you how much of your body weight is muscle or fat, which means if your goal is to improve your fitness level, the scale is not the best tool for measuring improvements. When you start to change your body composition with your workouts — by building more muscle mass and decreasing your body fat—your scale weight may increase, while your body fat percentage may decrease. These changes happen over weeks and months (not hours or days) so the scale is useless when tracking them.
You may argue that you weigh a few pounds less after a high intensity (强度) training class. Don’t get too excited—it’s just water loss due to sweat. Water makes up approximately 65 to 90 percent of a person’s weight, and variation in water content of the human body can move the scale by ten pounds or more from day to day.
So ignore the scale and pay more attention to objective measurement tools like body composition. Keep in mind that if you’re exercising but gaining weight, you may actually look slimmer.
32. What can we know from Dolgan’s words from paragraph 2
A. Your weight changes little during a day. B. Your scale mass is affected by many factors.
C. Your workout is not effective if you gain weight. D. Your weight is determined only by muscle and fat.
33. What will most probably happen after you exercise and eat healthy for 3 months
A. You will weigh more. B. Your muscle mass will decrease.
C. Your body fat will increase. D. Your body composition will change.
34. How much water may a man weighing 150 pounds have in his body
A. 30 pounds. B. 60 pounds. C. 100 pounds. D. 140 pounds.
35. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A Why Do We Gain Weight B. How to Work Out Effectively
C. What Is the Composition of Our Body D. Why Does My Workout Cause Weight Gain

A Little Boy
A little boy selling magazines for school walked up to a house that people rarely visited. The house was very old and shabby and the owner hardly ever came out. When he did come out, he would not say hello to his neighbors or passers-by but simply just glared at them.
The boy knocked on the door and waited, sweating from fear of the old man. The boy’s parents told him to stay away from the house, and a lot of other neighborhood children were told the same thing from their parents.
Dusk found the boy lingering on and hesitating what to do. As he was ready to walk away, the door slowly opened. “What do you want ” the old man said impatiently. The little boy was very afraid but he had a quota (定额) to meet for school with selling the magazines. So he got up the courage and said, “Uh, Sir, I am selling these magazines and, uh, I was wondering if you would like to buy one from me.”
The old man just stared at the boy without a word. The boy could see inside the old man’s house and saw that he had dog figurines (小雕像) on the fireplace mantle. “Do you collect dogs ” The little boy asked. “Yes, I have many collections in my house. They are my family here and they are all I have.” The boy then felt sorry for the man, as it seemed that he was a very lonely soul.
“Well, I do have a magazine here for collectors. It is perfect for you. I also have one about dogs since you like dogs so much.” The old man was ready to close the door on the boy and said, “No, boy. I don’t need any magazines of any kind, now goodbye.”
The little boy was sad that he was not going to make his quota with the sale. He was also sad for the old man being so alone in the house that he owned. The boy went home and then had an idea. He had a little dog figurine that he got some years ago from an aunt. The figurine did not mean nearly as much to him since he had a real live dog and a large family.

第一节: 应用文例文
Dear Chris,
I’m writing to inform you that I am not able to go hiking with you due to my illness, for which I really feel pitiful.
Honestly speaking, I have been looking forward to going hiking with you for a long time. Unfortunately, I was unexpectedly infected with flu, which caused me to have a high fever and suffer a lot. So I’m afraid I can’t keep the appointment as scheduled with you. Hopefully we can make another appointment after I have fully recovered. Please accept my heartfelt apology.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
第二节: 读后续写例文
The little boy headed back down to the old man’s house. The dog figurine witnessed the little boy’s ending up opening the door once more. Upon seeing the boy for a second time, the old man couldn’t bring his anger under control any longer. “Haven’t I told you I need no magazines at all ” he snapped at the boy. “Yes, Sir.” said the little boy with an uneasy expression on his face. “But I think you will like the dog figurine.” Then he handed it to the old man. Taking the figurine from the boy’s hands, the lonely soul was so astonished that words failed to convey his emotions, tears welling up in his eyes. “Thank you so much!” he said to the boy tenderly.
From that day on something changed inside the old man. The neighborhood always found the old man hanging out and smiling at everyone. He showed his precious collections to children who were now very willing to play with him. He used to collect figurines in memory of a real live dog which had kept him company for a long time before it died. But now, he wasn’t drowned in the sorrows and loneliness anymore. He had realized the true spirit of life.

Text 10
M: Growing crops in containers saves water. It needs little fertilizer (肥料). In addition, the chemicals cannot run off into nearby waterways. The same earth mixture can be used for five or six years. Since Earth Boxes went on sale in 1994, many people around the world have used them. Other people have made their own vegetable growing boxes. Some use two large plastic containers. One container has holes in the bottom and sits inside the other box. Earth mixture goes into the top container, and water goes through a tube into the bottom box. A plastic trash bag is then used to cover the top container. Some people think this kind of gardening will be important to people in poor countries where hunger is a problem. A lot of food can be grown in a small space for a small amount of money. The people who make Earth Boxes are interested in educating young people. They have developed a program aimed at teaching students science and agriculture. When children first enter elementary school, they learn about water, soil, light, and nutrition. In middle school, they do experiments and collect information. In high school, they learn how to use math to better understand what happens when plants grow. The learning program includes written materials for teachers and students. And it uses an Earth Box in the classroom as a small laboratory for experiments.
