Food festivals are a common occurrence in the UK and take place in all sorts of places and at all sorts of times. Whatever your taste, there’s a food festival to match—no matter how specialized.
Meatopia
This three-day, London-based festival takes place at the end of August and is a meat lover’s paradise. In addition to a range of meat products, from burgers to steaks, attendees can listen to live music, watch butchery shows, and attend informal meat-based workshops.
Vegfest
If you prefer a festival that will help you meet your five groups of vegetables a day, then Vegfest fest is for you. This vegan-friendly event takes place several times a year. Here you can enjoy a wide selection of freshly prepared vegetables, learn cooking tips and hear talks on nutrition to help you make the most of your plant-based search.
The Marmalade Festival
Held in Cumbria, this festival has been running for 13 years. It includes a competition to find the best homemade marmalade. There are thousands of entries from over 30 different countries across the globe.
The Ginger and Spice Festival
The Ginger and Spice Festival, held in Market Drayton, celebrates its town’s historic connection to Robert Clive, who returned from India with ginger. Because of this, they specialize in baking gingerbread, but also sell a range of spices from mild to hot.
The National Honey Show
It started in 1921 and is the largest event of its kind. This three-day event attracts over 2,000 participants to their traditional competition, and offers lectures and workshops on beekeeping and, of course, that syrupy golden honey.
While people’s tastes are different from each other, the UK has something to offer most people. From large-scale festivities, to the smaller gatherings, one thing is certain: people are passionate about their food. And while some of the products on offer might be strange to someone, when food is given that much attention, it’s unlikely to leave a bad taste in anyone’s mouth.

Albert Einstein was born in Germany in 1879. He was a quiet child who spent much of his time alone. He was slow to talk and had difficulty learning to read. When Albert was five years old, his father gave him a compass. The child was filled with wonder when he discovered that the compass needle always pointed in the same direction—to the north. He asked his father and his uncle what caused the needle to move.
Albert did not like school. The German schools of that time were not pleasant. Students could not ask questions. Albert said he felt as if he were in prison.
In 1905, Albert Einstein published some important papers in a German scientific magazine. They included one of the most important scientific documents in history. It explained what came to be called his “Special Theory of Relativity”. Ten years later he expanded it to a “General Theory of Relativity”.
In 1921, he won the Nobel Prize in Physics. It was given to him not for his theories of relativity, but for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect.
Albert Einstein left Germany in 1933. He moved to the United States to continue his research. Einstein became a citizen of the United States in 1940.
Einstein was a famous man, but you would not have known that by looking at him. His white hair was long and wild. He wore old clothes. He showed an inner joy when he was playing his violin or talking about his work. Students and friends said he had a way of explaining difficult ideas using images that were easy to understand.
Einstein spent the last twenty-five years of his life working on what he called a “unified field theory”. He hoped to find a common mathematical statement that could tie together all the different parts of physics. However, he did not succeed.
Albert Einstein died in 1955 at the age of seventy-six.

Britons are well known for the amount of tea that they drink. The average person in the UK consumes around 1. 9 kg of tea yearly. That’s around 876 cups of tea. Tea is drunk by all sections of society. But tea is not native to Britain. Most tea is grown in India and China. So, how did it become an important part of British culture
Tea arrived in London in the 1600s. At this time, British ships were exploring the world and came across the drink in China. It was not long before green tea was available to buy. However, this was only available to the richer sections of society.
At the beginning of the 1700s, the amount of tea arriving in Britain increased gradually. Black tea arrived at this time. At first people drank this tea exactly as it was in China. They soon discovered that it mixed really well with a little milk and sugar, giving the drink a special British characteristic.
In the 1800s tea was still a product enjoyed only by people with money. At this time they began to have “afternoon tea”. This involves drinking tea with a snack around 4 pm to avoid feeling hungry between lunch and dinner. It is a tradition that is still going today but has become less popular in recent times.
In the late 1800s, the price of tea decreased sharply as more tea began to arrive on ships from India and China. It was no longer a drink just for rich people. Tearooms — shops where you could buy and drink tea — started to appear across the country. People enjoyed drinking tea and socializing in these places. At the start of the 20th century, Britons began to make tea in their homes whenever they felt like it. Kettles became necessary in every kitchen.

We all know that water is tasteless. But it happens from time to time: you pick up the bottle of water you didn’t finish yesterday, and it tastes strange. Most often, you tend to drop the bottle in the trash bin, believing that the water has gone bad. But is it true
According to Time, of course not, taste has little to do with quality of water.
As is mentioned in Time, when water is exposed to the air for 12 hours, carbon dioxide interacts with the H2O in the water, and the pH value lowers slightly. As a result, the water has a different taste.
“But it’s most likely safe to drink,” Norwegian expert Truls Krogh told Science Nordic. “If the water is covered and of good quality to start with, in principle it can last a thousand years. That’s because when water is fresh, it contains little organic matter. As long as water is held in clean glasses or bottles, no pollutants will enter it to harm our health.”
People in countries like the US, the UK and Australia usually drink tap water. According to Time, if tap water is drunk within six months, the chlorine (氯气) in the water will be enough to kill any bacteria and keep it safe to drink.
However, there are also some exceptions. If you accidentally put your fingers into water or store water in unclean containers day after day, microorganism (微生物) will enter the water.
With the help of surrounding temperature, and sunlight streaming through windows, these microorganisms multiply quickly. Sooner or later, the water will be full of the unfriendly bacteria. And if you drink the water too often, then you’re more likely to be ill.
And what about water in plastic bottles Heat and plastic are a bad combination, US researcher Kellogg Schwab stresses. When plastic bottles are used at high temperatures, they produce a chemical called BPA. BPA is something that affects hormones (荷尔蒙) and research has tentatively linked it to “several health damage, including heart disease and cancer”, Time reported.
Schwab suggests replacing disposable (一次性的) plastic bottles with the refillable containers made of metal or glass to deal with BPA.
32. The purpose of the first paragraph is to ________.
A. show an example B. draw a conclusion
C. introduce a topic D. analyze a phenomenon
33. Which of the following may Truls Krogh agree
A. Covered water can last for a thousand years.
B. If the water tastes different, we shouldn’t drink it.
C. Although kept fresh, water may still have much organic matter.
D. The water held in a clean container is likely safe to drink.
34. What does the underlined word “multiply” in paragraph 7 probably mean
A. Increase. B. Reduce. C. Die. D. Adapt.
35. What can be the best title of the passage
A. Why Water Is Tasteless B. How to Get Clean Water
C. Does Water Really Go Bad D. Learn to Protect Water

Monday started out great. I woke up on time, ate breakfast and did some last minute studying for my first hour math test. I was confident of getting good grades. Then I left my house. Ten minutes later, I was settled with my friends on the school bus. We were busy chatting about how we spent our weekend. At one stop, Fat Ryan got on hurriedly. He tripped over (绊倒) someone’s foot accidentally and THUMP! He fell flat onto the floor.
Every one of us on the bus looked on and laughed crazily. Ryan struggled to his feet, dusted the jacket and made his way to an empty seat. He tried to laugh with us, but his face was burning with embarrassment. The rest of the morning flew by. I did well in my math test. I read two more chapters (章节) of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class. It wasn’t long before there went the lunch bell. I met my friends from the cheerleading team (啦啦队) in the dining hall. Then I couldn’t help but notice Ryan a few tables away, sitting all alone. He caught me looking. I smiled at him quickly and looked away.
When we finished eating, we headed out to the courtyard to practice a cheer we would do at that night’s football game. After a little practice, we nailed the cheer, so we decided we only needed to go through it one last time. Again, just like the rest of my day so far, the cheer was going great. I raised my leg for one last toe touch. RIIPPP! I felt my jeans split (裂开) down the middle of my backside.
I froze. I had no idea what to do but stand still. Then I heard people burst out laughing, and I saw them pointing at my tom jeans. Trying to cover myself with my hands, I tried to laugh too, but I felt tears began to well up in my eyes.

Should high school students study abroad
In recent years there is a phenomenon that more and more high school students study abroad.
In many aspects, studying abroad is beneficial to them. First, it will open their mind. In addition, it is a good chance to learn new culture and make new friends, which can improve their communication skills. However, it will take parents a lot of money to send their children abroad. And some students prefer traveling to learning. In this respect, it is a waste of money and absolutely not worthwhile.
Personally, I think it will be better for students to study abroad when they are old enough to support themselves financially. (107 words)

【答案】
Then I saw Ryan running towards me. Suddenly the scene struck me where he fell flat and I laughed at him crazily, I thought he would join in with those laughing at me. I lowered my head, my face burning with embarrassment. However, Ryan didn’t laugh. Instead, he approached me from behind, quickly took off his jacket and offered it to me, signaling to me to cover my torn jeans. Struggling against my tears, I did want to express my gratitude to him but courage failed me. I felt the courtyard in total silence. (87 words)
That night, after the cheer at the football game, I found Ryan. I thanked him for giving me his jacket and returned it to him. Gathering my courage, I sincerely apologized to him for my misconduct on the bus, and thanked him for helping me out of an equally embarrassing situation. Ryan, with a broad smile, patted me on the shoulder and told me to forget about it, joking he fell like that a lot. I admired his honesty and sense of humor, and realized that he was someone I could be great friends with. Honestly, Monday was a great day indeed! (90 words)

As the name suggests, this consists of some quite difficult exercises, designed to make a man of you! That’s a joke. Most of my customers are women. I do morning training in villages, and I advertise in local primary schools. I find that’s the best way of reaching young mothers. The training is always outdoors, in all weathers. I’m very much into showing that you don’t need gym equipment or heavy weights. So I like to use real things which you can find around your house or garden. My business is still at the developing stage, and the same goes for my website. At the moment, it’s just advertising what I do. It’s also got some pages of advice about training. Healthy diet is next on my list for the website, although I haven’t started that yet. Within six months, I hope to have some videos of people showing some training methods. I’m also planning to organize some sports camps for young children in the summer holidays. I’m looking for some helpers, so join me if anybody is interested.
