When Jeromiewhalen’s brother finished the Appalachian Trail, he had no idea that his adventure wasn’t quite over. One of the friends he’d made along the way had recently turned 83. In order to celebrate his birthday, he invited the man over. As luck would have it, this lively 83-year-old man was none other than famous long distance walker, better known as Nimblewill Nomad! Known as a continuous hiker, Nimblewill first went off into the world of hiking over 25 years ago after retiring(退休) from his job as an eye doctor. Since then, Nimblewill has been able to find peace and go on his many travels alone around the country.
Over the course of his 25 years of hiking, Nimblewill has made many friends and has had his fair share of adventures, some of which has appeared in several of his books. But one of the most famous hikes of his life happened in November 2021.
Although he’s no stranger to the Appalachian Trail, having completed it in 1998, doing it again at 83 was nothing short of a challenge. In fact, it was a record-breaking goal! Once he finished, he would become the oldest person to hike the 2,193-mile trail.
Although he knew the difficulties he would face, Nimblewill happily took on the challenge. Each day he would record his trip and interesting things that had happened on his blog. He dealt with bad weather, bears, mosquitos(蚊子), and physical pain, but in the end, completed the journey after 261 days.
At the moment, Nimblewill doesn’t have any plans for when or where he’ll be hiking next, but that doesn’t mean he’s done. No matter what path he takes, one thing is for sure: There are always fellow hikers who will be there to walk right with him and offer him a place to sleep, take a shower, or even celebrate another birthday.

Being a teenager can be difficult, since you’re dealing with hormones(荷尔蒙), higher expectations, and the process of finding your place in the world. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the teen years. If you want to have enjoyable teenage years, there are some things you can do—big and small—that can make a huge difference!
Setting Realistic Expectations
Avoid media-based expectations, good or bad. Being a teenager is not necessarily any easier or more difficult than any other life stage. Although adolescence(青春期) is a time of great change, this does not necessarily mean it will be the most difficult time of your life. If you are worried that this new life stage will be full of ever-present drama, the truth is that this is just another stage of your life which you will get through as much as you did toddlerhood(学步期) long ago.
Developing Yourself
Develop your sense of self, focusing more on your own thoughts and goals, instead of what other people think. For lots of people, the teenage years are full of worries—stop paying so much attention to them! Many worries are based on what other people think, rather than what you think. Go ahead and do what you want to do, without considering the opinion of others.
Developing Relationships
Work to improve your social skills. Some teens have trouble with social interaction(交往), with the reasons behind it different. Since social interaction is necessary in order to succeed, it’s important to learn how to deal with shyness and social anxiety. Consider working with a friend or a family member of close age to develop your social skills. It may not replace new social exchanges, but it’s a good practice.
Remember, not everyone enjoys their teens; that’s just a fact of life. However, if you don’t enjoy your teens, centre on being kind to others and getting through it.
28.Why may it be hard for us to get through adolescence
A.We are afraid of hormones. B.It’s the hardest stage in our life.
C.Others expect too much from us. D.We will lose our way in the world.
29.What can we learn from the second paragraph
A.Adolescence will be as difficult as toddlerhood.
B.As a teenager, you will get through some changes.
C.During adolescence you should avoid all kinds of expectations.
D.Being a teenager is not easy because it is full of ever-present drama.
30.Why is social interaction necessary
A.It helps improve our social skills. B.It helps us get away from worries.
C.It helps increase our chance of success. D.It helps replace new social exchanges.
31.What’s the opinion of the writer
A.What we think of ourselves can cause much trouble.
B.All of us are able to experience an enjoyable adolescence.
C.Even if we can’t enjoy our adolescence, we should try to get through it.
D.We should pay much attention to our own thoughts as well as others’ opinions.
D
We’ve all been there. One minute you’re searching for something serious, like a recipe(食谱) for dinner, or something for work, and the next you’ve been sucked in by endless videos of cats doing funny things after seeing an attractive title in your suggested videos column(专栏). They’re interesting, and you can end up spending hours watching kittens make funny noises or mistiming jumps. But why do these videos so often end up becoming popular What makes them so fascinating And why are they more popular than dog videos
First, let’s talk about stereotypes(成见). When many of us think about dogs, we imagine them rolling over onto their backs, tongue s hanging out, or making a mess. They seem trusting and innocent(单纯的)—and they do silly things. Cats, on the other hand, seem somewhat more controlled and independent. There’s a reason why we have an expression “cool cat”. In short, cats seem more serious—and clever. If we can put one over on a cat and make them do something like getting in a box that slides down a hill, it’s funny. But with a dog, it’s not as funny because they trust you—and it’s easier. Tricking a cat, due to their wiliness(狡猾), has more payoff.
The Internet is filled with videos of cats making funny faces or reacting strangely. But why are they so funny Well, simply—it’s unexpected. If you saw a cat walking down the street coolly or observing and preparing to attack a mouse, it wouldn’t be funny. But if that cat was walking sideways, wearing a silly costume, or becoming best friends with the mouse, suddenly we might start to laugh. Watching a cat that is normally impressive walk carelessly or pull a face is funny because it’s not something we would normally connect with that animal. It’s like watching someone who is normally very serious laugh loudly.
So the next time you see one of those funny behaviours of cats in awkward situations or videos that make you laugh, try to remember why it’s so funny. And spare a thought for all those dogs that are trying to give us pleasure too.
32.What do many of us think of dogs are
A.Innocent and simple-minded. B.Serious and clever.
C.Independent and smart. D.Untrusting and controlled.
33.What do the underlined words “put one over on” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Feed. B.Cheat. C.Believe. D.Teach.
34.Why is it funny to watch videos of cats making funny faces?
A.People like cats very much. B.They can make friends with the mouse.
C.It’s unexpected and out of character. D.The videos are recorded on purpose.
35.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Why Are Cat Videos So Popular? B.Why Are Cats More Cute than Dogs?
C.Making Friends with Cats or Dogs D.The Difference Between Dogs and Cats

One sunny day, I drove to the airport and was waiting to pick up a friend. That day I had one of those experiences that change people’s lives.
It happened just two feet away from me. I was sitting on a bench and looked around the big waiting hall. Just then I noticed a man, carrying two bags, coming toward me. He stopped next to me. There stood his family, the wife and three lovely kids. He greeted them, with a big smile on his face.
First of all, he laid down his bag and came closer to his younger son(about six years old). They gave each other a warm, loving hug. Then the father looked in his son’s eyes with words, “I missed you so much. It’s so good to see you, Son!” The boy smiled and said, “Me too, Dad.”
Then the man talked to his older son (nine or ten years old).“Oh, you are quite the young man. I love you very much!” and cupped his face. Then they had the most tender hug too.
Afterwards the father said, “Hi, baby girl” to his baby daughter. She was moving excitedly in her mother’s arm and watching her returning father all the time. The man gently took his little daughter, quickly kissed her face all over and then held her close to his chest. The little girl laid her head on his shoulder in pure contentment.
After several moments, the man put down the baby daughter slowly. He turned to his wife and looked at her gently and said, “I’ve saved the best for last.” He shared with her the most passionate kiss. They stared at each other, having big smiles. They reminded(使想起)me of newlyweds(新婚夫妇).

第一节
One possible version:
Good morning! I’m honoured to stand here to delive my speech, whose theme is “When the Buying Stops, the Killing Can, Too”.
As we all know, our planet is our beautiful home, where wildlife and humans should have lived together harmoniously. However, more and more wildlife is faced with extinction, whose habitats are becoming smaller as new roads and railways were built. Even worse, to make profit, hunters are killing wildlife. Many animals are being killed to meet buyers’ need, causing their population to drop increasingly.
It’s high time that we should change our way of life and stop hunting wildlife. If everyone stops buying any products made from wildlife, the killing can stop, too. Only when we learn to exist in harmony with nature can we stop being a threat to our planet.
That’s all. Thank you!
第二节
One possible version:
Suddenly, I heard myself asking, “Wow, how long have you been married ” Curious about the family, I asked directly. Hearing my less impolite question, the man answered kindly, “We have been together for fourteen years, and married twelve years.” “Well then, how long have you been away ” I seemed to feel more curious. He replied with joyous smile on his face, “Two whole days! I feel as if I left for a whole year. I missed them so much.”
I was shocked, as I imagined that he had been gone for several weeks at least. It’s so amazing that the man and his wife have kept the deepest love to each other and passed the love to their children, which is the strongest weapon to any difficulty. The way the man treated his family was very rare around me. I could only say, “I hope that my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years.” The man looked straight into my eyes and told me something that changed my life, “Don’t hope, my friend, decide!”
