(原创) Ask a parent, “What do teenagers do in their free time ” Most of the answers may be playing games, watching movies and TV and hanging out with friends. They may not think of reading.
Most of these answers are wrong. Fewer and fewer teenagers watch TV or go to the movies these days. They even hang out with friends less often than before. However, they don't read less often. They read all the time, but they just aren't reading books.
They read articles online and posts on social media (媒体). They get a lot of reading practice. Parents worry that it's not the right kind of reading practice, and it's terrible to spend time online. They believe that paper books are better.
Any reading is good for teenagers. It helps them get the skills that they will need later. They will become better at remembering things, and they can learn more words. Online, they can find many different things to read. They can find the latest information fast.
However, books are still better. They are easier to pay attention to. Teenagers understand and remember more from them. Also, reading books helps teenagers stay away from social media. Using social media too much causes stress and depression.
Parents can help their kids read books more often. First, they should have many books around the house. Then, they should give kids time to read. Finally, they can have good habits of reading books. Kids copy the habits that they see.
