In 1998, professional musician Spielberg was pregnant (怀孕的) with twin girls when she suffered complications. An emergency cesarean (创腹产手术) was performed during the 22nd week of pregnancy. Sadly, one of the twins passed away, but Valerie survived.
Valerie was born weighing only 12 ounces and was the size of a can of soda. She was so small that she didn’t meet the hospital’s premature baby weight limit necessary to receive life-saving treatment. A kind nurse put a finger on the scale and recorded her weight at 17 ounces, just enough to make her receive medical support.
It was touch-and-go. To make matters worse, the hospital was very loud and busy. Spielberg thought it felt more like an emergency room than a healing environment. She wanted to drown out (盖过) the noises of the hospital.
She couldn’t bring her piano, so she played CDs for her daughter. Amazingly, Valerie improved. Her oxygen saturation levels increased, her blood pressure stabilized, and her heart’s rhythm became more steady. This wasn’t a fluke — it happened again and again for four months.
And it affected all of the other babies in the room as well. Valerie’s health continued to improve after months of music and medical attention.
Having seen the amazing impact music had on her baby, Spielberg began working with music therapists. She also volunteered in nursing homes where she once inspired a silent man to speak with music. The elderly man’s wife had passed away and the pain seemed too much for him to handle. He had cut himself off from the world and hadn’t spoken in 6 months. When Spielberg unknowingly played his wedding song, the man broke out of his shell. He began singing and then asked to speak with his family.
Spielberg is still a professional musician. And these days she also teaches and speaks to audiences about the magic of music. Her daughter Valerie, now a healthy and happy young woman, has become a musician herself, playing both the piano and percussion.
4. What do we know about Valerie from paragraph 2
A. She was in great danger. B. She was adopted by a nurse.
C. She was too small to be weighed. D. She was given up by the hospital.

A. suddenly B. quickly C. accidentally D. regularly

A. An illness. B. An injury. C. Having no friends. D. Losing his wife.
7. What does the text intend to show us through Spielberg’s experiences
A. The power of music. B. The value of music.
C. Her musical life. D. Her musical talent.

Getting your kid to bed at night is one of the most difficult things you’ll ever have to do. Most kids are so full of energy that they’ll tire you out before they’re halfway through their store of energy. An easy way to encourage your child to get into bed is to give in and allow some iPad screen time. However, as you’ve probably already guessed, it’s really not a great idea.
Researchers at Arizona State University carried out a study with 547 kids between the ages of 7 and 9. Their parents tracked how much screen time the kids were allowed along with their sleeping patterns. They also had the kids wear wristwatches called actigraphs that could help researchers keep track of how long the kids were sleeping. The study found that kids who did not engage in screen time before bed slept for 23 more minutes every week and also went to sleep about 34 minutes earlier than their iPad-using counterparts (同伴). Although that might not seem like so much more time, quality of sleep is very important in children’s development.
The 2018 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey showed that good-quality sleep can influence a child’s life in many ways, including affecting grades. Students with an “A” average slept for 30 or more minutes per night (an average of 6.71 hours) than those with a “D” or “F” average (averaging 6.16 hours). Of course, getting to sleep on time and sleeping enough helps contribute to improved performance in school.
As hard as it is, it’s really important not to give in and hand over an iPad to a child who is about to go to bed. Just like it’s important for adults to go to sleep without any distractions (分心), it’s even more important for kids. The one comforting thought is that finally they’ll outgrow this stage, and soon you’ll have to worry about waking them up as teenagers.
8. What’s the function of paragraph 1
A. To explain an idea. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To offer some advice. D. To summarize the whole text.
9. The researchers found that kids’ using an iPad before bed __________.
A. affected their health seriously B. contributed to their sleeping late
C. reduced their sleeping time greatly D. made no difference to their sleeping quality
10. What does paragraph 3 focus on
A. The benefits of quality sleep. B. The process of the survey.
C The ways of improving grades. D. The different performances of students.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to kids’ screen time before bed
A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
D
Scientists in Australia thought they had developed a new tracking device to help them monitor magpies (喜鹊), but these birds had other ideas.
Australian magpies are medium-sized black and white birds from the same bird“family“ as crows and bluejays. They are known to be quite clever. They live in groups of up to 12 birds and work together to defend the area they live in.
The purpose of the scientists’ experiment was to learn more about how far they travel each day and how their social behaviors are influenced by sex, age, and rank. Besides, the scientists were eager to test the newly developed tracking device.
Most trackers are too big to fit on small and medium sized birds, and small trackers tend to be limited when it comes to data storage, battery life, and reusability. The new tracker, weighing less than 1 gram, was designed to overcome these problems. Attached to a backpack-like harness (背带) which could not be removed easily, the device can re-charge wirelessly and transmit (传输) data wirelessly.
The scientists placed trackers on five magpies using their special harnesses. Things started to fall apart almost immediately. Within 10 minutes of fitting the final tracker, an adult female without a tracker tried to remove the harness from a younger bird and eventually succeeded. This pattern was repeated in the following hours, and by the third day none of the birds had trackers anymore.
Scientists refer to this as “rescue behavior,” and it happens when a helper tries to free another individual in trouble and with no obvious direct benefit to the rescuing individual. They think this is the first time rescue behavior has been reported for Australian magpies. However, they aren’t sure if the same individual removed all of the harnesses or if others offered help.
The team didn’t get the data they wanted, but their experiment still produced interesting results. That’s how science works sometimes. The scientists need to try, again to figure out a good way to track these clever birds.
12. What can we learn about Australian magpies from paragraph 2
A. They outsmart crows. B. They are social species.
C. They are rarely spotted. D. They learn from each other.
13. What is a big advantage of the new tracking device
A. It can work without wires. B. It can be applied to all birds.
C. It doesn’t come off the birds. D. It doesn’t need to be re-charged.
14. Which of the following best describes a person with “rescue behavior”
A. Polite. B. Brave. C. Honest. D. Selfless.
15. What can be the best title for the text
A. New tracking devices disappoint scientists
B. Magpies prove to be cleverer than scientists
C. Magpies teach scientists an unexpected lesson
D. Science experiments don’t always go as planned

On the morning of May 18, Claudia Jimenez woke up with smoke and fire blazing around her apartment. She tried to find a way out but realized her situation was hopeless. The front door was blocked so there was no way out for herself, her two small children, and their two dogs.
The fire was quickly spreading and there was nothing else Jimenez could do but cry out for help. “I opened my window and I started yelling ‘Please, someone help me, there’s a fire, I can’t get out through the front, I need someone to help me,’” said Jimenez.
Joe Hollins, a homeless man camping near Jimenez’s apartment heard the woman’s screams. He ran to where the burning apartment was and found out about the helpless situation that the family were in. “All I see is a lady standing by an open window, screaming ‘Please help me, please help me,’” Hollins said.
Once he was under the window of the apartment, Hollins asked Jimenez to drop the children down and he would catch them. Jimenez immediately trusted the man and dropped her two kids, Valerie and Natalie as well as their two dogs.

5. The underlined word “fluke” in paragraph 4 refers to something that occurs .

6. What caused the man mentioned in paragraph 6 to be silent for months

推理判断题。根据第二段“Valerie was born weighing only 12 ounces and was the size of a can of soda. She was so small that she didn’t meet the hospital’s premature baby weight limit necessary to receive life-saving treatment. A kind nurse put a finger on the scale and recorded her weight at 17 ounces, just enough to make her receive medical support. (瓦莱丽出生时体重只有12盎司,只有一罐苏打水那么大。她太小了,没有达到医院规定的早产儿体重限制,无法接受挽救生命的治疗。一位好心的护士把一根手指放在磅秤上,记录下她的体重为17盎司,刚好足以让她接受医疗支持)”可推知,瓦莱丽出生时体重很轻,有生命危险。故选A。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段“She couldn’t bring her piano, so she played CDs for her daughter. Amazingly, Valerie improved. Her oxygen saturation levels increased, her blood pressure stabilized, and her heart’s rhythm became more steady. This wasn’t a fluke — it happened again and again for four months.
C. The ways of improving grades. D. The different performances of students.
11. What’s the author’s attitude to kids’ screen time before bed
A. Unclear. B. Supportive. C. Doubtful. D. Negative.
【答案】8. B 9. B 10. A 11.

A homeless man praised as a hero in Arizona was not a firefighter but he managed to save a family from a burning apartment. His kindness and willingness to help gave him the courage to run to the apartment regardless of the enormous fire that welcomed him.
“I opened my window and I started yelling ‘Please someone help me, there’s a fire, I can’t get out through the front, I need someone to help me,’” said Jimenez.

【答案】Jimenez froze when it was her turn to jump. With flame reaching up, she was hesitant at first but Hollins reassured, “I will catch you. Don’t worry.” Hearing his encouraging words, a sense of strength immediately replaced the mounting fear and anxiety in Jimenez’s mind. Eventually he gathered the courage to jump and landed safely in the stranger’s arms. Soon, the fire department arrived and put out the fire. As soon as things calmed down, Jimenez sincerely offered his heartfelt gratitude to Hollins for saving her and her family. Hollins just smiled, saying that anyone in his situation would do the same thing without hesitation. Later, the event spread quickly, which made the homeless man praised as a hero by Arizona residents for saving the family from a horrific tragedy.
