When I read a post about taking someone to the movies, I was reminded of something that happened a couple of years ago.
I used to drink Cokes and they had a promotion where there was a code inside the bottle cap. You went to a website and entered the code and maybe you won something. I won some free Cokes. But then I won the grand prize! I was surprised and pleased.
The grand prize was free movies for a year. They pointed out that one movie a week was that free movies for a year meant. All of the tickets had a deadline later than a year from the day I received them. So I must use them in the following year. I used quite a few by taking friends to movies we all wanted to see.
But the best thing I did with them was that I donated 22 tickets (all I had left by that time) to the local Women’s Transition House, a place where women and their children could go when avoiding a bad situation in general and get help to make a new start.
My workplace team had decided to help people in need, so we collected donations for that particular New Year’s Day. I knew the Women’s Transition House provided childcare for the women so they could go for job interviews.
I put those tickets in a box and wrote a note, asking the Women’s Transition House staff to give movie tickets to women there over the holidays to have something fun to do, with or without their children. It made me really happy to do this.
4. How did the author get the tickets
A. By visiting a website by chance. B. By exchanging some Cokes for them.
C. By attending a knowledge competition. D. By winning the prize for drinking Cokes.
5. How many tickets did the author and his friends use
A. About 22. B. About 30. C. About 52. D. About 365.
6. Which of the following best describes the author
A. Lucky and caring. B. Creative and careful.
C. humorous and generous. D. Thankful and happy.
7. What does the Women’s Transition House offer to women
A. Jobs. B. Childcare. C. Free movie tickets. D. Interview skills.

Three minutes of looking at red light once a week may help our eyesight, new research suggests. The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines (衰退) in color vision (视力) as we get older.
Last year, researchers from University College London did a study on red light therapy (疗法). 24 healthy volunteers, aged between 28 and 72, were asked to look at red light for three minutes every day for two weeks. Tests later found that the eyesight of people over the age of 40 improved.
To test the possible weak points of their therapy, they did a new study this year. Instead of using the light every day, they used it once a week. The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.
On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.
“We’ve found that one single treatment in the morning can greatly improve declining vision.” said lead author Glen Jeffrey.
The findings do support their earlier work, and they might make the treatment more practicable, since a once-weekly treatment is easier to stick to than a daily one. But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers Larger studies would be needed to show the help of red light therapy.
“In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute treatment could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.
Given its low cost (as little as $15) per machine, and simplicity, the team is excited about the future of their therapy.
8. What plays a key role in red light treatment
A. The time of day for treatment B. The machine used in the treatment.
C. The time that one treatment lasts. D. The number of treatments received.
9. What makes it necessary to improve the study
A. The age of the volunteers. B. The number of the volunteers.
C. The sex of the volunteers. D. The poor vision of the volunteers.
10. What is Jeffrey’s attitude towards the future of the therapy
A. Unclear. B. Doubtful. C. Serious. D. Hopeful.
11. What is the purpose of this text
A. To state the importance of eye care.
B. To explain the value of deep red light.
C. To introduce a way to fight vision decline.
D. To encourage people to protect their eyesight.

Most city parks are places where you can escape from big ugly structures of metal and stone. The Manhattan High Line is different. Raised 25 feet above the ground, this large metal structure once supported a rail line. The line opened in 1934 to bring trains directly into factories. It was hardly used after the 1960s, and much of it was torn down. However, one part remained in a region of Manhattan called Chelsea. Chelsea was becoming high-class as restaurants, art galleries and apartments were built, but the ugly railway structure remained as a dead weight. Everyone knew that at some time, it would have to be removed.
But the High Line was not destroyed. In fact, now the old rail line serves as one of the most peaceful places in the city. It holds an incredible park, with beautiful gardens and great views of the city. The idea to turn the rail line into a park came from Joshua David and Robert Hammond. In 1999, they attended a meeting to decide how to deal with the High Line. David and Hammond were the only people at the meeting interested in saving the historical structure. Later on, when they asked railway officials to take them up to look at the High Line, they saw a mile and a hall of wild flowers growing in the middle of the city, and they realized that the High Line had potential to become a park. There was growing interest in improving city centers, and so the project quickly developed and money for construction was easily collected.
The first part of the High Line opened in 2009 and immediately became popular with tourists and locals alike. Each part of the park has a different atmosphere. Some areas are like balconies ( 阳台) with wonderful city views. Where the rail line goes between buildings, trees are thickly planted. Other sections have wide lawns ( 草 坪 ) and walkways with wild flowers. Only the final section remains the way it has been for the last fifty years.
12. What does the underlined part “a dead weight” in paragraph 1 mean
A. Something with historical interest.
B. Something with potential to be better.
C. Something which is a danger to people.
D. Something useless which slows progress.
13. Why did David and Hammond originally want to save the High Line
A. They wanted to reopen the train line.
B. They thought it had historical value.
C. They were interested in improving the city.
D. They thought it would become a good park.
14. Which of the following statements about the High Line is correct
A. All parts of it have the same atmosphere.
B. The first part gradually became popular.
C. One part of it remains the old way.
D. Trees were thinly planted in all areas.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. Closing a train line.
B. An unlikely place for a park.
C. Protection of cultural relics.
D. Improving city transport.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hurriedly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mothers face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”

【答案】4. D 5. B 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The new study included 20 volunteers, aged between 34 and 70, all with healthy vision. Some received red light therapy in the morning, and others received it in the afternoon. They were then tested on their color vision up to a week later.(这项新研究包括20名年龄在34岁到70岁之间的志愿者,他们都有健康的视力。一些人在早上接受红光治疗,另一些人在下午接受。然后在一周后测试他们的色觉)”以及第四段“On the whole, those who got the treatment in the morning showed a 17% improvement in their color vision, even a week later. Those who got the treatment in the afternoon did not have any improvement.(总的来说,那些在早上接受治疗的人,即使在一周后,他们的色觉也提高了17%。那些在下午接受治疗的人没有任何改善)”可知,研究表明在上午接受红光治疗的志愿者一周后色觉有明显改善,而在下午接受治疗的则没有任何改善。所以在红光疗法中起着关键作用是一天中治疗的时间段。故选A。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“But the team’s promising results are still drawn on small numbers of healthy volunteers. Larger studies would be needed to show the benefits of red light therapy.(但该团队的研究结果仍依赖于小部分健康志愿者。需要更大规模的研究来证明红光疗法的好处)”可知,还需要更多的志愿者来证明红光疗法的好处。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段““In the near future, a once-a-week three-minute exposure to deep red light could be done while making a coffee or listening to a song, and such a simple thing could change eye care and vision around the world,” Jeffrey said.(Jeffrey说道:“在不久的将来,每周一次三分钟的深红光治疗可以在煮咖啡或听歌曲时完成,这样简单的事情可以改变全世界的眼睛保健和视力。”)”可推知,Jeffrey对红光治疗的未来充满了希望。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“The findings show that red light might be a cheap and easy treatment for declines in color vision as we get older.(研究结果表明,随着年龄的增长,红光可能是一种廉价而简单的治疗色觉下降的方法。)”以及通读全文可知,本文主要讲述了研究发现可以利用红光疗法来治疗色觉下降。所以本文的目的是介绍一种对抗视力下降的方法。故选C。

Most city parks are places where you can escape from big, ugly structures of metal and stone.
14 Which of the following statements about the High Line is correct
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. B

【答案】参考范文
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Though a little stunned, Ben stood straight and defended himself, “Mom, it was the cat! I promise.” Forcing a smile, the mother reached for another chocolate and passed it to the boy. “A reward for your perfect repair.” Staring at the chocolates, the boy hesitated but still continued to deny everything. Before he could say anything, a third chocolate appeared in his hand, with his mom’s soft voice “And this one is for your bravery. You are brave enough to stick to your decision.”
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. It seemed that everything was all at Mom’s fingertips. Speechless, the boy felt a lump in his throat. He lowered his head in shame and stammered out the truth. “Mom, I’m so sorry that I broke your vase and lied to you. I was too terrified because it’s your favourite antique.” Relieved and delighted, the mother cradled him in her arms and whispered, “Good boy… It’s never too late to mend.” With the chocolate box handed to the boy, Mom said delightedly, “These ones are all for your honesty, my boy! Do remember that honesty values more than any antique.”
