Physical education, or gym class, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education The answer is certainly “yes”.
Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.
High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s studies and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.
The American Heart Association says that 10 million kids and teens suffer from obesity (肥胖症). Teens should get 60 minutes of physical activity per day to control their weight and to help their bones get stronger.
The increase in activities that don’t get teens to move around, such as video games and computer activities, means many teens don’t get their required exercise. Physical education classes act as a public health measure to encourage activity and help teens have healthy weights.
Inactivity increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
According to the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.
4. According to Paragraph 2, what does physical education in high school mean
A. Helping teens learn to make good plans.
B. Removing the stress faced by teens at school.
C. Getting teens to encourage adults to exercise.
D. Making teens attach importance to exercise later.
5. What does the underlined word “hindered” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Measured. B. Shown. C. Prevented. D. Caused.
6. According to the PCFSN, what does doing sports mean
A. Helping students do better in their studies.
B. Helping students make good use of all their time.
C. Helping students adjust to their studies better.
D. Making students choose between sports and studies.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. How high school students can live a better life.
B. Why high school students should receive physical education.
C. Why some schools consider physical education important.
D. How schools can help students love doing sports.
C
More than half of the food produced in Canada goes to waste. A shocking new study has shown that the level of food waste is far worse than previously thought, at 58%. Of that, about 85% of food waste is due to food processors. This differs from earlier studies, which criticized families for driving food waste and said they were responsible for 51% of food waste.
The study was carried out by Martin Hooch, the leading expert on food waste and the author of several previous studies on the subject. Reflecting on the study’s findings, Hooch said, “It means stopping criticizing consumers. Sure, consumers are part of the problem, but they’re not the problem.”
In the past, Hooch didn’t master good data, particularly from the private factories, but relied on numbers collected by the food industry for purposes other than tracking waste. This time, however, Hooch worked directly with companies at all stages along the food production chain and interviewed over 700 experts in the industry. Clearly he found it hard to believe what he was seeing.
This is what they found: Food processing causes 34% of food waste. This is followed by production, which causes 24%. Next is manufacturing at 13%, then hotels and restaurants at 9%. Families cause only 14%, and market sales 6%. This should be a scrious wake-up call for Canadians who would do well to examine their own food supply chains. Food waste is costly, not only in terms of dollars wasted, but also in resources like land, water, and so on. To be using these resources and wasting the product is totally irresponsible and unnecessary.
To make matters worse, when food is thrown into rubbish cans, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas 30 times more powerful than carbon dioxide (CO2). At Canada’s rate of food waste, that’s like adding 12 million cars to the road. It seems that the food industry needs redesigning. Therefore, let’s hope the government takes action.
8. What did earlier studies say about food waste in Canada
A. Families were to blame for food waste. B. Food went bad when it was processed.
C. Most of the food was wasted on purpose. D. Food waste was better than expected.
9. How did Hooch do his study on food waste this time
A. By studying data from the industry. B. By drawing a conclusion from the previous studies.
C. By collecting advice from experts worldwide. D. By tracking the whole production chain.
10. Why does food waste have an effect on the environment
A. Because it is harmful to the trees. B. Because it produces more greenhouse gas.
C. Because it gives off unpleasant smells. D. Because it pollutes the soil around it.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. Canadians don’t like to save food for future.
B. Families are mainly responsible for food waste.
C. More than half of the food is wasted in Canada.
D. The food industry is better redesigned in Canada.

The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted (分散注意力的) by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good — until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo—how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.
Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To call on readers not to take photos. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To show the interest in taking photos. D. To make us think of similar experience.
13. Why does photography “outsource” memories
A. People depend more on photos to remember than their brains.
B. Many sources influence people’s memories during photo-taking.
C. Photos are more detailed than memories.
D. Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
14. What may likely be discussed next
A. Situations when taking photos is better.
B. How to use photo-taking to memorize better.
C. When distraction is most likely to happen.
D. How to stay focused while taking photos.
15. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. The Fewer Photos We Take, the Better We Will Remember.
B. Too Many Photos Taken Results in Poor Memories.
C. Photography Does Help to Memories.
D. Remember the Moment and Take Photos Properly.

Should teens do housework after school ___16___Some might claim that doing housework is a waste of time, while others feel that housework is a good opportunity for teens to become more mature. As for me, I strongly argue that it is indeed necessary for teens to do household work to help develop a sense of responsibility.
First of all, to be responsible, teenagers should learn how to manage their time. ___17___When I was in senior high, I had to wash dishes every day. Therefore, I learned how to do my chores (家务) quickly to save more time for studying and relaxing. On the other hand, my little brother did not do any housework, so he always struggled to keep to his schedule.
___18___Doing household chores can train teens to become independent people. For instance, when my sister was in high school, she had to do her own washing and cleaning, and even cook her own food. As a result, she knew how to take care of herself. She rarely relied on anyone.
Finally, doing household chores can help teens become better leaders. ___19___When my family clean the house together, I often give orders and see everyone do his or her own work. My sister is in charge of dusting the floor, I clean the windows, and my brother takes out the waste. ___20___Moreover, statistics show that a lot of students who are class leaders often are responsible for the main household chores in their families.
A. Take my personal experience for example.
B. People adopt different stands toward this issue.
C. Besides, being responsible means being independent.
D. Parents feel angry if their teens don't help with the housework.
E. Secondly, it gives teens the sense that they're part of the family.
F. Doing household work can help them develop good time management skills.
G. As a result, when I was selected as the leader in group projects, I felt confident about it.

B. Helping students make good use of all their time.
C. Helping students adjust to their studies better.
D. Making students choose between sports and studies.
7. What is the text mainly about

A 9. D 10. B 11. C

D
B 13. A 14. B 15. D
根据第一段“The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted (分散注意力的) by the process that we miss the moment altogether. (摄影“外包”了记忆。它在两方面起作用:我们要么在拍照时摆脱了记住特殊时刻的责任,要么在拍照过程中分心,以至于完全错过了那个时刻。)”推知,拍照“外包”了记忆是因为人们在拍照时,更依赖照片而不是大脑来记忆。故选A。
根据最后一段最后一句“Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further. (因此,照片是帮助记忆的极好工具,如果是有目的的,这是值得进一步探索的)”可推知,接下来文章可能会探讨如何利用拍照来更好地记忆。故选B。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段“The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.

F Doing household work can help them develop good time management skills.
G. As a result, when I was selected as the leader in group projects, I felt confident about it.
