Saisri Akondi was visiting a friend in Manipal just before the lockdown. Trapped by the travel ban, the researcher found herself frustrated at not being able to help during a national emergency. Back home, her colleagues at the National Chemical Laboratory worked on innovative methods to deal with the pandemic (流行病). She wanted to contribute in her own way. Soon, she spotted the opportunity.
On the evening of 11 May, she came across 50 migrants being questioned by the police. Akondi learned that they were railway construction workers, abandoned by their employer after the lockdown and were making their way to Mahabubabad, 680 kilometres away. “I instantly thought of helping them, noticing there were 10 children and a pregnant lady among them,” recalled Akondi.
Her first task was to register the group on a government portal (入口) to help them get movement passes within the state. Then, she arranged for food and convinced the railway authorities to let the migrants stay at the Udupi station until their transport was arranged. Akondi next turned her attention to the women, arranging for vitamins for her. She continued to make frequent posts to the social media handles of the Telangana chief minister’s office, seeking attention and help. There was no response for days, but she did not give up.
Her relentless efforts paid off, The Telangana government paid for the migrants’ travel back. On 19 May, the happy migrants were saying a tearful goodbye to Akondi and on 20 May, they reached their homes.

When ice cream maker Adrienne Borlongan first experimented with a White Rabbit flavor, she thought it tasted like “cheap vanilla (香草)”. A few weeks after she added it to her Los Angeles shop, Wanderlust Creamery, visitors showed little interest. But when Borlongan posted a photo of an ice cream cone wrapped in White Rabbit-branded paper, word quickly spread on social media.
The candy, first produced in Shanghai in the 1940s, is known for its red-white-and-blue packaging and is beloved by kids all over China. And when Chinese people began to live in other countries, their love for the white, creamy candy went with them.
Soon after Borlongan posted that photo, people were driving to Wanderlust from all over California. Since then, White Rabbit has been the mainstay of Wanderlust’s ice cream lineup and is regularly sold out in their webshop.
But the story of the ice cream is about way more than taste — it’s about the power of nostalgia (怀旧) and eye-catching branding. White Rabbit’s origins date back to a business called the ABC Company, founded in Shanghai in 1943. It was later sold to the state-owned Guan Sheng Yuan Food Group, which owns it to this day.
The mix of colorful wrappers and the sweet milky taste proved a winner. Kids from Beijing to Hong Kong grew up on the sweets, and it also became a national symbol of the country — most famously, US President Richard Nixon was given some when he made his historic visit to China in 1972.
As for the flavor The creamy consistency (黏稠度) actually comes from milk, and there’s a piece of rice paper between the candy and the wrapper to prevent melting. Over the years, White Rabbit has tried out other flavors, including red bean and peanut. But it’s the first version that has the most nostalgia connected to it.
8. What can we learn about the White Rabbit ice cream
A. It used to be popular in China. B. It is available online.
C. It is shaped like a white rabbit. D. It was first produced in Shanghai.
9. What does the underlined word “mainstay” in Paragraph 3 mean
A. Fanciest design. B. Newest brand.
C. Cheapest goods. D. Bestselling product.
10. Why is US President Nixon mentioned in Paragraph 5
A. To look back on the historic visit.
B. To show Chinese people’s hospitality.
C. To prove White Rabbit’s popularity.
D To indicate Nixon’s interest in White Rabbit.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The story behind the success of the White Rabbit ice cream.
B. Childhood memories carried with White Rabbit.
C. The international reputation of the ABC Company.
D. The history of the White Rabbit candy.
D
Years ago it was popular to speak of a generation gap, a disagreement between young people and their elders. Parents said that children did not show them proper respect and obedience (服从), while children complained that their parents did not understand them at all. What had gone wrong Why had the generation gap suddenly appeared Actually the generation gap has been around for a long time. Many people argue that a gap is built into the fabric (结构) of our society.
One important cause of the generation gap is the chance that young people have to choose their own ways of life. In more traditional societies, when children grow up, they are expected to live in the same area as their parents, to marry people that their parents know and agree to, and to continue the family occupation. In our society, young people often travel great distances for their education, move out of the family home at an early age, marry or live with people whom their parents have never met, and choose occupations different from those of their parents.
In our easily changing society, parents often expect their children to do better than they did: to find better jobs, to make more money, and to do all the things that they were unable to do. Often, however, the strong wish that parents have for their children is another cause of the disagreement between them. Often, they discover that they have very little in common with each other.
Finally, the speed at which changes take place in our society is another cause of the gap between the generations. In a traditional culture, elderly people are valued for their wisdom, but in our society the knowledge of a lifetime may become out of date overnight. The young and the old seem to live in two very different worlds, separated by different skills and abilities. No doubt, the generation gap will continue to be a feature of American life for some time to come. Its causes are rooted in the freedom and changes of our society, and in the rapid speed at which society changes.
12. What is the text mainly about
A The concept of generation gap.
B. The reasons for generation gap.
C. Ways to reduce generation gap.
D. Attitudes towards generation gap.
13. In modern society, young people often ________.
A. depend on their parents to make a life
B. live with their parents in the same area
C. ask their parents for the best advice
D. have very little in common with their parents
14. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Parents should be strict with their children.
B. The generation gap is partly caused by the older generation.
C. Parents couldn’t do things well themselves.
D. The young never want to satisfy their parents.
15. Which of the following also causes the generation gap
A. Parents are not strict enough with their children.
B. The young value the old too much for their wisdom.
C. Young people don’t have the knowledge of a lifetime.
D. The society develops too fast.

One Good Deed Deserves Another
When I was young, I lived in a small village in Melaka. The spirit of neighborliness was very strong then. The village had a variety of trades to serve the needs of the villagers. There was a barber, a tailor, a coffee shop owner, a grocer (食品杂货商), and so on. All of us were quite poor but we got by. However, one family which could be considered as living a marginal existence was the Lim family living in the bicycle shop opposite our dwelling.
Mr. Lim, the bicycle mechanic, had a large brood of children — six to be exact. My mother was a kind-hearted soul. Often, she would remark that his children were dressed in ragged (破旧的) clothes and looked malnourished (营养不良的). My family was relatively better off so my parents would take over whatever food we could spare to the Lim family.
I remember one particular year when times were very hard. Even my family had to make do with just two meals a day, so we stopped giving food to Mr. Lim. One day, I noticed my mother looking troubled. She had learned that the Lim family had not been eating for the past two days. She decided to sacrifice a portion of our meals to the family, despite the protests from my brothers that were too hungry. Fortunately, the lean spell did not last long, and the children started to get our three meals a day again.
As time went by, the number of customers using Lim’s shop increased rapidly, which was delightful. Business took off like a rocket because Japanese bikes were very useful and popular for transport. The Lim family was much better off than before.
It was at this time that my father’s health started to get worse. We were confused by the mysterious illness he was suffering from. He paid less attention to his shop and business got worse. My father had to sell our family car to pay off the mounting bills. My brothers and I had to stop schooling because we could not afford the fees.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
They say that one good deed deserves another.

12. What is the text mainly about
A. The concept of generation gap.

【答案】Dear all students,
As is known to all, Beijing has produced about 9.01 million tons of household waste in the past year, which has led to a series of problems caused by the over-saturation of landfills. Faced with this situation, Beijing hopes to improve the situation as soon as possible and strive to achieve zero landfill. It is essential to dispose rubbish properly.
Although there are ways to deal with the problem, such as classifying, collecting rubbish and processing polluted water, the most important is that awareness of environmental protection of people should be improved. Besides, we should make laws to stop people from throwing away rubbish and punish those who break them. All of us should make contributions to protecting the environment and protecting everything around us. I believe, if everyone does his/her share, we can make a harmonious society in a short time.

With the help of Mr. Lim, the situation in my family took a turn for the better.

【答案】
They say that one good deed deserves another. Mr. Lim, our neighbor, came to learn of our plight and stepped in to help. He stated simply that it was his turn to repay the kindness that my parents had shown to him in the past. Through his connections, Mr. Lim arranged for my father to consult a famous doctor. Not only was this doctor’s diagnosis of my father’s medical condition accurate, but he was also able to cure my father. Besides, he arranged for a loan for my father’s business. He also told my brothers and I that we should not give up our education. He then arranged to finance our education as long as we needed it.
With the help of Mr. Lim, the situation in my family took a turn for the better. My father recovered from his illness gradually and his business recovered the next year. My father is now the proud owner of the village mini-market. Mr. Lim has expanded his business, too. My brothers and I are among the top students in the school. Whenever my parents met up with Mr. Lim, they would thank him for his past help. He would just shrug off their thanks and say simply that he was merely repaying a kindness. The children in both families have brotherly friendship now. The story between the Lim family and my family has proved a saying that kindness begets kindness.
