This is a story I wanted to share just to show how often things happen for a reason. And just by having a short conversation with a stranger can change the course of someone’s day. It brought me to tears and still does.
Yesterday my parents were heading off on a little holiday and I took them to the train station. Upon arrival it was pouring rain. I got their luggage out and helped them to the elevator and sent them on their way. As they were entering, an elderly man was exiting. We walked back to the entrance and I commented to him I hoped he had arrangements to get where he needed to go. He was going to wait 30 minutes for the bus. I asked where he was going and it turned out that he was heading to the same town as I was, just a 15-minute drive away. I offered to drive him and he gratefully accepted. We had a lovely chat on the way and I learned some of his history and the fact that he was 87 and heading to the hospital where his only daughter stayed. His daughter had mental disability. A tear fell down his cheek as he told me about her. I managed to hold it together but barely. As I dropped him to the entrance of the hospital, I gave him the bunch of flowers I had in the car which I had given to my mum on Mother’s Day, forgetting she wouldn’t be home to enjoy them.
I would much rather see them enjoyed by him and his daughter than take them back home. Tears rolled down his cheeks and he thanked me. As I made my way back to my car, I totally lost control of my emotions and cried like a baby. I was very glad to be able to help him in some way.

A lecturer in the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Dr Olabode Badiru, has called on the government to pay more attention to food security in the country to solve the rising cost of foods.
According to Dr Badiru, farmers need fertiliser and other agrochemicals like pesticides. Insecticides and others to solve the problem of pests. All of these will cost much money. Besides that, we have the problem of insecurity that farmers are being chased away from the farm.
Dr Badiru also called on the government to address insecurity, saying farmers are afraid of going to farm. He, who gave the advice while speaking with journalists in Ibadan, urged individuals to embrace backyard farming to reduce the spending on some food items. Most of the farm machines and chemicals used by farmers are all imported, he emphasised that these may have effects on what they will produce.
Reducing the rising cost of food requires some efforts from individuals and the government at all levels, he advised, and at the individual level, backyard farming could help to re-duce the need for purchase of food. He advised Nigerians to grow vegetables and other eatable plants, raise small animals like sheep and goats and raise domestic animals in their houses. Beyond the backyards, he also said youths should be encouraged to go into farming despite the challenges involved.
The government at all levels, especially the states, must provide an enabling environment for willing citizens to engage in agriculture. Security is the key. Basic facilities, such as road and electricity, should be improved. We can start by pushing practical research products to the farms for adoption to strengthen farm productivity through a functional agricultural extension system. “Essentially, we must look for innovative ways of bringing the unit cost of agricultural production down, among other measures,” he said.

Green is the new gold. As China is transitioning(转变)towards a greener development mode, low-carbon industries in the country have been boosting in recent years, which has led to more business opportunities for companies worldwide.
The new energy vehicle (NEV) industry is a fine illustration. Last year alone, China sold about 6.89 million NEVs, up 93.4 percent year on year. The market share of NEVs in China’s auto market reached 25.6 percent in 2022, up 12.1percentage points from 2021.
Domestically, China’s green transition is bringing a real change. Globally, it is also helping other countries to sustain green growth. “China is the largest supplier of solar energy equipment across the world and in Africa in particular,” said Ajay Mathur, director general of the International Solar Alliance. While noting that many solar panels and batteries being used in Africa are of Chinese origin, Mathur stressed China’s involvement and huge potential in terms of realizing Africa’s seeking for solar energy development. “There is the greatest link that exists between the Chinese manufacturers of solar energy technology and the African users of that technology,” he said.
Apart from African countries, China is also sharing its green development philosophy with many more countries across the globe. The Chilean capital of Santiago has been tapping electric vehicles from China as part of plans to improve its public transport system and advance clean travel.
While boosting development, maintaining biological diversity(生物多样性)is also important. For example, many tunnels were extended and roads are replaced by bridges to protect elephant habitats in the construction of the China-Laos Railway.
“The contribution of China’s green development to global sustainable development cannot be ignored, and it also sets an example for other countries’ green development,” said Abdulrahman Aldakhil, director of Corporate Communication of Saudi National Center for Vegetation Cover Development Combating Desertification. “China’s promotion of international cooperation to protect the environment is a reflection of its sense of responsibility,” he said, “China’s experience in green development is worth learning from.”
32. What message does the author convey in the first two paragraphs

Amy is good at making pies, which got her hired at the Good Times restaurant months ago. And she was often regarded as the best worker there. Recently, she became the supervisor at the restaurant. She was kind and friendly to all the other workers and the customers.
One morning, Amy was taking orders when she overheard a conversation. “What you did there was great, Mason! It was hard to carry the old lady safely out of the fire. For a moment, I thought you were gone, my friend,” one man said. To this, the other man replied, “Yeah, it was difficult, but that’s our job. And you were the hero today, Gordon. You carried that girl on your shoulder and her dog in your hand. It’s going to be on the front page tomorrow, I’m telling you.”
From their clothing and conversation, Amy knew they were firefighters. And she quickly realized that they had been talking about the previous night’s fire at the old motel on the other end of the road. Then the man named Gordon continued, “I don’t care about being in the papers. The little girl and her dog reminded me of my own daughter. She’s constantly asking for a dog, too.” Amy was moved by the courage and sincerity of the two men. She wanted to show her appreciation for their selfless service.

You are always thinking of others, often risking your life to help others. What I can do for you today is nothing compared to what you did last night. I want to express my appreciation to all of you for your heroic conduct.” Having finished writing the note, Amy got up from the table, glancing at the two firefighters with admiration.
Then she went to the cashier and secretly paid for their meal. She asked the cashier not to tell them who had paid for their meal but just give them the note. About half an hour later, the two firefighters finished their meal and went to the cashier to pay for their meal. But they were told that someone had already paid for them. The firefighters looked at the cashier in surprise. The cashier handed them the note. Looking at the note, the firefighters knew what had happened. “Please convey our thanks to this kind person,” said the firefighters. After saying this, they left the restaurant.
