Florence, Rome, Venice. Beautiful cities to be sure, not to mention some of the planet’s most visited travel destinations. Yet this popularity means that for many, Italy’s premier hotspots are too expensive and overcrowded to visit. If you want to enjoy a true taste of Italy without the tourists, read our list of secret Italian towns you need to visit.
Treviso, Veneto
Treviso is like a small Venice with fewer tourists and crowds. Its historical walled centre is dotted with medieval churches, cobblestone streets, red-brick palaces and tiny old canals that connect buildings, gardens and piazzas.
Bologna, Emilia-Romagna
Bologna is one of the coolest towns in Italy. It is mostly frequented by students--Bologna is home to the oldest university in Europe and a whole lot of gastronomy fans, since it’s known to be the Italian food capital. Once you arrive, don’t forget to taste the delicacies of the area, such as lasagne, tortellini and, you guessed it, bolognese.
Castelluccio, Umbria
Castelluccio is the highest village in the Apennine Mountains at 1,452m (4,764ft) above sea level. It’s a charming village with lovely squares that offer amazing views over the mountains and fields that blossom with violets and red poppies. The best time of the year to visit Castelluccio is in spring--from late May to early June.

When Roosevelt was a kid, his doctors claimed that he was too weak to live a normal life like most children of his age. They strongly recommended him to avoid participation in any physical activities, fearing that it could worsen his health condition and potentially lead to his death. Their opinions implied that he would face up to a life full of all kinds of limitations. Instead of permitting their limiting beliefs about what he could do and achieve, he chose to live a meaningful life.
Despite his doctors’ strong suggestions that he remain inactive, he didn’t want to be a carefree observer of the world as it passed him by. He was determined to force himself to be active. Roosevelt had daily adventures in the woods as a boy.
He continued to play sports when he got to college. In fact, he didn’t just play, but he excelled in both boxing and rowing, both of which require astonishing levels of strength and endurance. When Roosevelt graduated from college, his doctors were still not completely sure about his health condition. They still believed that he would be putting himself in serious danger, because his heart problems had not improved. They firmly believed that it would be best to find a desk job for him after completing a college degree. Once again, Roosevelt decided to challenge himself to his physical limits by living an extremely energetic adult life. In about every field he took part, he would aim to push his physical limits. Impressively, he was excellent as an explorer, a hunter, an author, a soldier and a politician.

It’s said that Thomas Edison found an unusual way to enjoy piano music. As someone played, the famous inventor, who had been deaf, would move close to the instrument and bite it. In his own words, it allowed him to “hear through his teeth”.
Robert Friedman, who was in the business of buying and selling pianos, recently showed off marks on a piano that was once owned by Edison. The piano had groups of small marks above the keyboard. He was surprised by the tooth marks left by the inventor of the phonograph (留声机) , a music playing device.
Edison invented the phonograph in 1877. Edison ever asked for the piano at the lowest price. When he bought the piano and put it in the lab, he was experimenting with sound recording. He owned the instrument for many years, so it was possibly used in early recordings.
There aren’t photographs of Edison biting this piano. But he was thought to bite into phonographs and pianos to help him experience music as his hearing worsened. His daughter once remembered that a guest cried on the spot at the sight of Edison biting into a piano as someone played it.
Friedman calls himself the piano hunter. He finds and buys the famous pianos from people and then sells them, usually to dealers. But this piano is more complex. He is now looking for the right home for the instrument. Friedman says that he believes that it belongs to someplace where many people can see it. Friedman does not want it to go back into private hands because of its connection to Edison. He has to find a historical group that will buy the piano, which he is offering to sell for what it cost him.
28.What was Edison’s purpose in biting the piano
A.To record his day. B.To enjoy its music.
C.To express his anger. D.To mark its importance.
29.Why did Edison buy the piano
A.To perform music. B.To decorate his lab.
C.To test the phonograph’s recording. D.To sell it at a very higher price later.
30.How did the guest feel about Edison’s behavior
A.Impressed. B.Pleased. C.Puzzled. D.Embarrassed.
31.What will Friedman do with the piano
A.Give it away. B.Make a fortune
C.Sell it at the original price. D.Keep it somewhere for himself.

A smoke bomb from a party started a major blaze (火焰) near Los Angeles in September, just one of many recent wildfires ignited (引燃) by people. Now, an analysis of satellite data shows human-caused blazes spread much faster and kill more trees than ones ignited by lightning.
Fire has always been a part of California’s natural history. But several centuries of human settlement have created new conditions that promote its spread.Studies have shown human ignition is to blame for 84% of all wildfires in the United States, and 97% of all those that threaten homes.
Human-caused fires always seemed more extreme, says Stijn Hantson,a fire ecologist at the University of California,Irvine, who led the new research. But measurements of how fast they spread and their impacts on ecosystems (生态系统) in California had not been explored, he notes.
To examine those differences, Hantson and his colleagues analyzed satellite data for 214 wildfires in California between 2012 and 2018.Human-caused fires typically spread about 1.83 kilometers per day, more than twice as fast as lightning-ignited burns, the team reports. The faster spreading fires also burned more violently and killed “double or triple” the trees as lightning-caused ones.
However, there is no fundamental difference in the chemistry of a human-caused blaze. “A fire is a fire” Hantson says. “It’s the surrounding things that matter.” Causes of fires ranging from improperly thrown cigarettes to sparking (冒火花) power lines could ignite a blaze on any given day, he says, while lightning strikes and dry thunderstorms only happen seasonally.
The researchers tracked meteorological data and found that human-caused fires were more likely to start on days with extreme weather conditions, and were more associated with drier,less-forested landscapes. This adds to scientists’ understanding of how humans are extending the fire season, says Nathan Mietkiewicz, an ecologist with the National Ecological Observation Network.
32.The author uses some data in paragraph 2 to show that ________.
A.wildfires are mostly caused by humans
B.most wildfires threaten people’s homes
C.wildfire is a part of California’s natural history
D.wildfires break out frequently in the United States
33.What’s the purpose of Hantson’s research
A.To prove how extreme human-caused fires are.
B.To find out the causes and solutions of wildfires.
C.To explore the speed and effects of wildfires caused by humans.
D.To examine the differences between a human-caused blaze and a nature-caused one.
34.How is the result presented in paragraph 4
A.By giving examples. B.By making comparisons.
C.By analyzing cause and effect. D.By giving definitions.
35.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A.Human-caused fires and lightning-caused fires are basically different.
B.Lightning strikes and thunderstorms can always lead to wildfires.
C.Wildfires only happen in dry,less-forested areas.
D.Humans are to blame for the extended fire season.

After working many years in a large hospital, my work as head nurse in a small local hospital turned out frustrating. Occasionally we lacked supplies or equipment and sometimes the food was less than desirable. The biggest problem was the lack of qualified help. Still, everyone working there had a genuine love for the patients, and did their best to care for them.
Alice, a tiny, elderly lady with bright blue, twinkling eyes, was everyone’s favorite. Her only living relative was her son Jack, a large, tough man. Tattoos (纹身) covered his arms and an untidy beard grew wildly on his chin. No matter how cold the weather was, he always wore a tank top shirt so the snake artwork could be admired by all. He wore faded jeans, so stiff with thick dirt that they could have stood alone. His loud and rude manner frightened most of the staff.
But this large man loved his tiny mother. Every day, he roared up to the hospital entrance on his old motorcycle, pushed open the front door, and walked with heavy steps down the hall to her room, his loud boot heels announcing his arrival. He visited at unpredictable hours so he could surprise anyone who suspected him of not taking proper care of his mother. Yet, his gentleness with her amazed me.
I made friends with Jack, figuring I’d rather be a friend with a man like him, than an enemy. And I, like everyone else, truly loved his mother.
One particularly bad evening at the hospital, three nurses called in sick, the food carts came late and cold, and one of the patients fell and broke his hip. Jack came in at suppertime to help his mother with her meal. He stood and looked at me in surprise as I busily tried to do the work of three nurses. Exhausted, and near to tears, I avoided his stare.
After the patients were finally fed, bathed, and put to bed, I sat at the desk and put my head down on my arms for a few moments’ relaxation before the night shift arrived.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, the front door burst open.

66.Dear Committee members,
I wish to make a suggestion about starting a school art gallery.
There are many students who are good at painting in our school. The school art gallery can provide these students with a very good platform to display their own paintings, offer them a chance to admire the artistic achievements and the development of school culture as well as widen their knowledge. If you were to offer such an opportunity to the students who are fond of art, I believe they would give you a big surprise.
I would be more than happy if my suggestion could be considered.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
67.Suddenly, the front door burst open. Startled, I thought. Oh no! Here comes Jack, who were thought of far from gentleness, checking up on us again! As he came to the desk, however, I looked up to see his big hand gripping a pickle jar with a bit of colored yarn tied in a bow around the neck. And in the jar was the loveliest, long-stemmed red rose I’d ever seen. Jack handed it to me and said, “I noticed what a bad time you were having tonight. This is for you, from me and my mother.”
Putting down the rose on my desk, he turned around and left. Before I could say something, he marched back out the door, and with a roar from his motorcycle, rode out into the darkness. I was near to tears again, overwhelmed by the genuine love from this seemingly loud and rude but actually loving and gentle man. I’d received many gifts and cards from many grateful patients and their families, but they never touched me more than the red rose in the pickle jar given to me that night.

Everyone knows that bees are busy. There is even a saying in English that one can be “as busy as a bee”. However, little is known about how bees play. Scientists have discovered one way that bees could relax after a busy day making honey—they play with balls. The scientists are from Queen Mary University of London. They did different tests on bees “playing” with different things. The insects particularly liked playing with small, wooden balls. The researchers said the way bees played was a little like how humans play. Younger bees rolled more balls than older bees, while adult males spent longer playing with balls than adult females. The ball-rolling bees are the first known insects to “play”.
The researchers experimented on 45 bees in a specially designed test area. The bees were given two options. The first choice was to fly or walk directly to get a sugary treat. The second choice was to get to the treat by going around different coloured wooden balls. Most of the bees decided to play with the balls and then get their treat. A researcher said the experiments showed that bees are more thoughtful than people believed. She said: “Bees are a million miles from the mindless, unfeeling creatures they are traditionally believed to be. ” She added that: “This research provides a strong indication that insect minds are far more complex than we might imagine. ”
