Using an app to learn a language is convenient because you can follow lessons and check your progress anywhere, even if there’s just a few minutes. Below is a list of my favorite ways to learn languages from my phone.
Google Translate
Most of apps teach you a language through exercises and progressive steps, while Google’s simply tells you how to write and speak anything you run through it. Still, I think it’s a great choice for beginners. I like to learn languages with Google Translate for two main reasons: its long list of supported languages, and the several language learning methods.
Memrise
Memrise isn’t as easy to use for quick translations as Google Translate, but it is easy to work with, supports offline courses, and lets you learn a number of languages. You can start off simple or skip all the way through to more advanced lessons. I find Memrise to be unique in how it teaches new words and phrases. They combine words into sentences alongside words that sound similar in your language, which makes it easier to remember.
Busuu
Busuu’s app is user-friendly. You get to pick where you’d like to begin in the course. The words and phrases you’ll learn are especially helpful for beginners who might find themselves around people speaking a foreign language and need to learn words in real situations quickly. However, Busuu doesn’t support as many languages as some of these other apps, and you do need a user account to get in.
Rosetta Stone
Rosetta Stone is designed specifically for helping travelers learn basic words and phrases. There’s also a phrasebook with basic words and words related to restaurants, hotels, and getting around—all very useful for someone traveling. If you want, you can buy additional phrasebooks covering topics like shopping, colors, emergencies, and so on.
21. Which apps are suitable for beginners according to the author
A. Memrise and Busuu. B. Rosetta Stone and Memrise.
C. Busuu and Google Translate. D. Google Translate and Rosetta Stone.
22. What is special about Memrise
A. It is designed for travelers.
B. It has real-time translation.
C. It supports a large number of languages.
D. It has unusual methods of teaching vocabulary.
23. In which part of a magazine may this text appear
A. Technology. B. History. C. Travelling. D. Business.

Rosario’s Peruvian Restaurant in Longmont has become well-known in the Denver metro area (都会区), Colorado over the last 10 years. The restaurant’s owner Rosario Cardenas spends seven days a week at her beloved restaurant, joking that she calls it her “baby”. But how she made the restaurant a success is no joke at all. It is her determination and passion to turn a vision into reality.
Rosario’s is a little place but for the last decade it has been serving up big, bold flavors from recipes Cardenas brought with her from her home in Perú—recipes that have helped her solidify a status for many as the best Peruvian restaurant in the Denver metro area.
As a former teacher and school principal, cooking used to be just a hobby. But when she immigrated to the U.S., she couldn’t use her education degree here, so she decided to use her talents to share her country’s unique dishes with her new community. “I have always said, if you can dream it, you can achieve it, and for me, the restaurant was my dream,” Cardenas said.
Rosario’s isn’t just about delicious food, it’s also serving up slices of Peruvian culture. It’s part of Cardenas’ vision to help customers feel like they’ve taken a trip to her home country. At her restaurant, she created a concept on her menu called “tours”, where guests can have samples of all kinds of Peruvian dishes.
Cardenas has regular Latino (拉丁美洲人) customers who will drive special three to four hours, some even from Wyoming, not just to enjoy her cooking but also to find a restaurant that represents their own culture in the metro area.
“Food is a great way to connect, not just with the Peruvian community, but every single community. We have people from Mexico, Columbia, from all parts of South and Latin America.” Cardenas explained, “So, having me and my restaurant be that connection between these people and their culture and their heritage, I think it’s just beautiful.”
24. What makes Rosario’s restaurant popular in the Denver metro area
A. Its high-quality service. B. Its family-centered model.
C. Its special location in Colorado. D. Its Peruvian style recipes.
25. Which words can best describe Cardenas
A. Ambitious and committed. B. Organized but self-centered.
C. Adventurous and legendary. D. Optimistic but simple-minded.
26. Why did Cardenas present “tours” on her menu
A. To get customers to know about Perú.
B. To get customers to shape Peruvian identity.
C. To reward regular visitors from Perú.
D. To draw more tourists to her home country.
27. What can be inferred about Rosario’s restaurant from the last two paragraph
A. It can meet the demand of all customers.
B. It is a place to realize American dream.
C. It helps bring Latino cultures together.
D. It will be widely known all over the world.

A recent analysis from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine highlights the benefits of replacing animal products with plant-based foods. This analysis, which amplifies a previous study by the same committee, further emphasizes the significant impact of plant-based diets on weight loss, cholesterol(胆固醇) and fat intake in overweight adults.
The most significant finding is that both healthy and unhealthy plant-based foods contribute to weight loss when they replace animal products in the diet. This conclusion is significant because it underlines the potential of a plant-based diet, regardless of the specific type of plant-based foods consumed, in managing weight and improving overall health.
This analysis is a secondary examination of a prior study that involved 244 overweight adults. The participants were divided into two groups. The first group followed a low-fat vegan (素食的) diet, and the second made no changes to their diet. Obviously, the study set no restrictions on calorie intake, and the researchers did not give participants specific instructions on diet quality.
The study authors used two different indexes (指标) to assess: the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). The hPDI emphasizes fruits, vegetables, grains, and beans, while the uPDI includes more refined grains and fruit juices. Higher scores on the indexes correlate with greater consumption of plant-based foods and reduced consumption of animal products.
The results revealed that after 16 weeks, participants on the vegan diet showed increased scores in both indexes. This increase significantly correlated with participants losing an average of about 13 pounds, mainly from reduced fat mass. The second group showed no change in their index scores.
Overall, the analysis provides strong evidence that eating plant-based foods is effective for weight management and health improvement.
28. What does the underlined word “amplifies” mean in paragraph 1
A. Abuse. B. Expand. C. Launch. D. Classify.
29. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The causes of putting on weights. B. The key insight on plant-based foods.
C. The significance of managing weights. D. The specific types of plant-based foods.
30. How is the study conducted
A. By improving participants’ diet quality.
B. By following participants’ daily routines.
C. By monitoring participants’ calorie intake.
D. By comparing participants’ indexes scores.
31. What can we know from the study
A. Being on diet is the key to losing weight.
B. All plant products are beneficial to health.
C. Plant-based foods show promising results.
D. Animal products have no effect on weight.

High schools used to teach shop classes and students learned hands-on occupational skills like woodworking. Nowadays, most schools have changed shop classes in favor of academic core subjects. However, one organization doesn’t think that academics and carpentry (木工工艺) have to be separated.
The National Science Foundation STEM Guitar Project is an organization that aims to get students excited about science, math, and the arts all at once, by teaching students how to make a guitar from the beginning.
Experts forecast that technical skills like the ones used in making the guitars could be the most in-demand job in the future, according to The Conversation. Unfortunately, many high schools don’t introduce students to mechanical precision, design, and manufacturing skills, because they are not on standardized tests, and because schools aren’t aware of the future applications of these skills.
But STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is really needed to build a guitar. According to The Conversation, it’s impossible to make a guitar without knowing science and math. To space the frets (音品) on the guitar’s neck, guitar designers use a mathematical formula. STEM Guitar Project employee, Nancy Chang, said that “Using that formula to build a guitar you really care about and you want it to turn out and play really well, gives you a really good reason to figure out an equation (方程式) that otherwise would just be something from out of a book, that had no meaning.”
The STEM Guitar Project runs five-day workshops for teachers each summer. At the workshop, teachers learn to make their own guitars, and are given a curriculum, textbooks, materials, and guitar kits to use in their classrooms. Teachers at the workshops report that the opportunity to make a guitar is fun and exciting. Mike Aikens, STEM Guitar Project co-founder, explained that “If you’re exciting teachers you’re for sure going to excite kids”.
Thanks to the STEM Guitar Project, it opens students’ and teachers’ eyes to real-world applications of technical skills, and lets them know that real world math is much more exciting than theoretical concepts.
32. What can students do in the Guitar Project
A. Practice professional skills with art craftsmen.
B. Develop an interest in maths through making guitars.
C. Promote academic ability for the standardized test.
D. Improve theoretical level to solve practical problems.
33. What does the author intend to show in paragraph 4
A. The growth of mechanical design skills.
B. The whole process of making a guitar.
C. The help from schools in choosing subjects.
D. The ties between academics and carpentry.
34. What’s Mike Aikens’ attitude towards five-day workshops for teachers
A. Appreciative. B. Critical. C. Subjective. D. Opposed.
35. What is the best title of the text
A. Students Learn Technical Skills Via Guitar Project
B. A Guitar Project Wins Most School’s Support
C. Music Offers Kids an Access to Technical Skills
D. The Classroom Will Be a More Amusing Place

The Smile
If there is anything that I could remember distinctly till date in my life, it is my mother’s smile. It was her smile that made me get ready to school, go with confidence to face all my challenges at school and be successful. Her smile did all the magic.
I was in grade 7 and was the topper of my class in academics, sports, speech contests, singing, music…. Friends surrounded me everywhere and I was the star of the school. Everyone who met my parents always had these words to say, “You have a very talented child. You are very lucky.” I was filled with happiness and pride and I knew that I had made my parents very happy.
My ambitions grew and I wanted to have nothing but the best in my life. Things were fine until one day. I came back home with an award I won in the elocution (朗诵) competition at school. Filled with pride, I gave it to my mother and waited for her beautiful smile. She smiled and congratulated me and asked, “Did your friends participate in the competition What were their positions in the competition ” I was a little annoyed. In fact, I do not even remember who was second and third or who participated. I told her that I was very tired and did not remember everything.
I started noticing a change in my mother, especially her smile. It was not the same lovely smile that I used to see. One day, when I was getting ready for the sports competition, she asked why I was not practicing with my friends. I told her that I was meant to be the first and I had no business to be with friends who are not ambitious. My mother patiently told me that I have forgotten to enjoy the simple little things in life like laughing and smiling, spending time and helping my friends in their difficulty, being their support. She said that a human being becomes a good person not with their success but with the love that he/she shares with one another and by achieving together.

书面表达
Dear Editor,
I contribute to your newspaper to introduce something about the recent class meeting of mine. Our class has held a heated debate about whether going abroad or staying at home for college education recently.
Some students think that studying abroad is a good choice, because there are lots of famous colleges with excellent academic environments abroad. But the expense of studying abroad is quite high. Others prefer to study home. They believe that domestic colleges have excellent teams of teachers, the teaching equipment is advanced, and the tuition is lower. However, chances to practice are not as many as studying abroad.
As far as I’m concerned, I’ll choose domestic colleges as culture difference is a big problem for me. To study abroad, you must get over the obstacle of language and differences in behavior and habits.
Yours,
Li Hua
读后续写
I was on the track field the next day at school, ready to run the 200m running race. The race began and in no time, I was in lead. Suddenly, I heard my friend fall to the ground. I turned around and saw that he was trying to get on his feet to finish the race. With no second thoughts I ran to him, lifted him and helped him finish the race. The race was over and I wasn’t the winner. But the crowd all stood up and cheered when my friend and I were trying to finish the race.
I realized they were cheering not for the winners but for my friend and me. Believe me, I felt like a champion that day. I realized the true meaning of a winner that moment. I helped my friend to sit down and relax and while doing so out of the corner of my eye, I knew there was someone who was looking at me. My eyes turned around to look who it was. It was my mother. Her eyes were filled with tears and there I saw what I have not seen for years. Her heavenly smile and her smile said it all.

M: Actually, I need to go to the library to do some research this Sunday. Could you drive me there
W: Of course. Let’s take your brother there to read some books, too.

Do you know Vienna Vienna is the capital and the biggest city in Austria with two million people, accounting for about one fifth of the country’s population. Vienna has been considered the leading European music center for centuries. The city center is home to dozens of concert halls, museums, and music schools. Vienna is also home to some of the world’s most famous musicians, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms and Joseph Haydn. Of all these musicians, Joseph Haydn is my favorite. Coffee is another important part of the city’s culture, and its numerous coffee houses are often visited by locals and visitors alike. Viennese coffee houses are known not only for coffee but for their Viennese desserts. Some of the most famous coffee houses in Vienna are Cafe Central, Demel and Gerstner. The city is also home to a number of famous museums. Most of them are located in Museum Quater. Vienna is a beautiful city. I’ve talked about its music culture, coffee houses and museums. Take a break. I’ll introduce its fine arts and then talk about Viennese balls one by one.
