A five-year-old dog named Kelsey has been praised as a hero for helping to save the life of her owner who slipped in the snow and broke his neck.
The man, Bob, was alone when he left his farmhouse on New Year’s Eve to collect firewood. Expecting a journey of only several meters, Bob was wearing just long johns(衬裤), a shirt and slippers when he went outside, although the temperature was around -4 ℃.
After the accident, he was unable to move in the snow. Fortunately, Kelsey came to his assistance.
“I was shouting for help, but my nearest neighbour is about 400 meters away, and it was 10:30 p. m. ,” Bob explained. “By the next morning, my voice was gone and I couldn’t yell for help, but Kelsey didn’t stop barking. ”
Kelsey’s companion kept him warm by lying on top of him. She licked his face and hands to keep him awake. “Kelsey kept barking but never left my side,” Bob recalled. “I knew I couldn’t give up and that it was my choice to stay alive. ”
Bob spent 20 hours in the freezing cold. When he finally lost consciousness, his dog kept barking. Finally, hearing the barking, Bob’s neighbour discovered him at 6:30 p. m. on New Year’s Day and called the emergency services at once. When Bob arrived in hospital, his body temperature was below 21 ℃. However, doctors were surprised to find that he didn’t have any frostbite(冻疮). They believed it was because of Kelsey’s determination to keep him warm. Dr. Chaim Colen, the doctor who treated Bob, said, “His dog really saved him. He was very fortunate. ”

First aid is emergency care for a victim of sudden illness or injury until more skillful medical treatment is available. It may save a life. In minor emergencies, first aid may prevent a victim’s condition from turning worse and provide relief from pain.
First aid measures depend upon a victim’s needs and the provider’s level of knowledge and skill. Knowing what not to do in an emergency is as important as knowing what to do. Improperly moving a person with a neck injury, for example, can lead to permanent spinal(脊柱) injury and paralysis(瘫痪).
Despite the varieties of injuries, several principles of first aid apply to all emergencies. The first step is to call for professional medical help. Next, assess the scene, asking other people or the injured person’s family or friends about details of the injury or illness, and preexisting conditions such as diabetes (糖尿病) or heart trouble. The victim should be checked for a medical card that describes special medical conditions. Unless the accident scene becomes unsafe or the victim may suffer further injury, do not move the victim.
First aid requires rapid assessment of victims to determine whether life-threatening conditions exist. One method for evaluating a victim’s condition is known by the acronym(首字母缩写词) ABC, which stands for:
A—Airway: Is it open and clear
B—Breathing: Is the person breathing Look, listen, and feel for breathing.

2.D 根据上文中的“The first recorded history of first aid dates back to 1099…”
3.B 根据后面一句 “He suggested training ordinary people in what was called ’premedical treatment’. ”可知,此处要说明谁提出“first aid”的想法。关键词He与B项中的“an army surgeon”相对应,故选B项。
5.F 根据本段的第一句“Modern-day prehospital treatment of the sick and injured…”

Lungs nearly bursting, I struggled to lift my head out of the water. Inch by inch, my tired body reached for the end of the pool.
The extent of my swimming career was purely recreational, while the competitive swimmers nearby thought nothing of the seemingly simple task of a 500-meter swim test. Pushing myself to finish what I had started,I could only think: why not take the easy way out
Earlier that week,I had turned in my first job application at a local pool. Overqualified,I was hired on the spot. However, the tasks were boring: helping confused visitors and measuring the height of children before they went down the slide, those sorts of things. I was capable of more.
So a swim test was required, establishing the mere fact that I was not completely helpless in a pool. Midway through, the manager administering the test remarked,“This looks really easy for you. Why aren’t you applying to become a guard?”
“The thought hadn’t crossed my mind. ”
“Well, lifeguarding demands more responsibility, strength and respect. Thus the position pays $2 more per hour. Your swimming skills are strong enough. All you need to do is complete a certification class. ”
Inside I was unsure of myself, but his words inspired me—you never know what you are capable of until you force yourself to do it.
Soon I passed the swim test. All left was to practice and learn first aid,CPR(心肺复苏),and procedures for different land and water-based emergencies.
Work started soon. A well-intentioned yet anxious feeling in me soon passed. Days, weeks, and months went by without incident; emergencies were rare. The skills and training I had so carefully studied and acquired seemed unnecessary.
Today appeared to be another uneventful day. However, shortly after the other guards signaled to the children to exit the pool,I noticed one boy was still in the middle while the others had climbed up.
注意:1.续写词数应为l50左右;
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. ____________ _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Having the boy on the floor,I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. _________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“Something must have gone wrong with him,” I thought to myself. Sure enough, with a closer look,I found the boy waving his hands desperately. I quickly dived into the water, swimming towards the boy at full speed. By the time I reached him,he had sunk to the bottom of the pool, his head hanging down, which filled my heart with fright and concern. I picked the boy up and headed to the poolside, keeping his head above the water.
Having the boy on the floor,I put my ear to his mouth and my fingers at his neck. I could tell that he had no heartbeat and wasn’t breathing. Every second counted! Without hesitation,I did first aid, giving him mouth-to-mouth breathing and doing CPR as trained. Other guards were watching anxiously. I carried on,sweating. Suddenly,a stream of water burst out of his mouth and the boy coughed intensely. Seeing the boy regain consciousness, those around broke into cheers. Exhausted,I sighed with relief. I thought that had I accepted that easy position,I would have been nothing but a bystander. I’m happy I didn’t take the easy way out.UNIT 5 Period Four

Ⅰ.七选五
You should always seek professional medical help as soon as you are able to, but following correct first-aid steps can be the difference between life and death. Here are some suggestions about how to care for an unconscious person.
Determine responsiveness. If a person is unconscious, try to awake him by gently touching his hands and feet or by speaking to him. __1__
Check for breathing and a pulse. If the person is unconscious and unable to be awoken, check for breathing; look for a rise in the chest area. __2__ Feel for air using the side of your face. If no signs of breathing are clear, check for a pulse.
If the person remains unresponsive, prepare for CPR(心肺复苏). Unless you suspect a spinal injury, carefully roll him onto his back and open his airway. __3__ If the person begins to vomit(呕吐), move him over to his side to help prevent choking.
__4__ Check these three things frequently as you give the person first-aid CPR.
*Airway. Does the person have a clear airway
*Breathing. Is the person breathing
*Circulation. Does the person show a pulse at major pulse points
Make sure the person is warm as you wait for medical help. __5__ However, if the person has heatstroke, do not cover him or keep him warm. Instead, try to cool him by fanning him and damping him.
A.Remember your ABCs of CPR.
B.Listen for the sound of air coming in and out.
C.Cover a towel or a blanket over the person if you have one.
D.The ABCs of CPR refer to the three critical things you need to look for.
E.Perform chest compression 30 times and rescue breathing twice as part of CPR.
F.If you suspect a spinal injury, leave the person where he is, provided he is breathing.
G.If he does not respond to any activity, sound or touch, determine whether he is breathing.
2.B 本段主要讲了要检查呼吸和脉搏,B项与之对应,且上下文中的“check for”,“look for”,“Feel for”与B项中的 “Listen for”构成排比结构。
4.A 根据空后的Check these three things与Airway,Breathing和Circulation三个词的首字母可以推断,应从A项和D项中选择;因为D项与下文衔接不当,故选A项。

One possible version:
Dear Jack,
Last Friday, our school invited Doctor Zhang Jiang to give us a lecture on how to give first aid in case of an accident.
Doctor Zhang said that if an accident happens, we should first check whether the accident scene is safe. If it isn’t, move to a safe place at once. Furthermore, we should dial the ambulance call immediately if someone is seriously injured. Besides, Doctor Zhang offered us a lot of detailed first aid treatments and safety tips, which are easy to learn but of great use.
Thanks to his lecture, now I know what to do in case of an accident.
I wish you all the best.
Yours,
Li Hua
