In Colonial Days, farm families worked from sunrise to sunset and sometimes longer. People had little time for play. They did not have a chance to see other people as much as we do today. But sometimes they were able to turn hard work into good times and still visit with their neighbours.
In Virginia,Indian corn was an important crop. In late autumn after the weather had turned cold, the corn was ready to be harvested. Each ear had a cover of leaves called the husk(壳). The colonists pulled ears of corn from the dry stalks and stored the ears of corn. Later, they held a corn-husking party.
On a clear night in November, neighbouring families gathered to husk the corn. They lit lanterns in a barn and piled the corn in high mounds(垛) on the floor. Then everyone went to work.
Most of the corn was yellow or white. But from time to time,a red ear was found. The person who found it was supposed to have good luck.

(2023山东潍坊市一中高二测试)As a kid,I was always around animals and I always enjoyed it. After my senior year of high school,we started leasing this farm. Then I went away to Rhode Island School of Design to become an architect. After about two years and a half,I found that was not quite what I wanted to do. I felt I wanted to be an architect and have a hobby farm. But why not just have a farm and make it my career
It’s an exciting business. I think a lot of people don’t realise what’s involved with dairy farming(奶牛业). We took some trips to some progressive farms out in New York when we first started. And it really changed my attitude of what you can do. You can be a successful businessperson with a lot of challenges. And those challenges are part of what makes it very exciting—it’s not just milking cows. There’s nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions.
Well, land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is important. We don’t just need the land for the animals; we also need it to distribute the manure from the cows. And there’s a real balance,a real recycling. You take the feed; you give it to the cows, and the cows give you milk, but they also give you a lot of manure. And the best thing to do is putting it back on the land. You need 2 acres per cow basically,a cow and its calf.
The land that we rent is beautiful and the land that we own is beautiful. If you get half a mile off the road and looking back at scenery across the valley,it’s impressive. You get the rows of grass and the cows in the distance.

A.Building a Successful Dairy Business
B.Famous Farmers Around the World
C.Highly Qualified Milk Cows
D.The Architecture Designer
11.What’s the meaning of the underlined word in Paragraph 3

(2023山东济南市一中高二测试)What do you do at the end of the day when you’ve finished with work How you spend your free time can have a big impact on your mental health. Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up(被压抑的) stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer. But,interestingly, how you spend your free time can also impact your work performance.
Researchers at the University of Sheffield’s Institute of Work Psychology in the UK found that developing hobbies can develop your confidence about how well you perform your job.But your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5 work.
To study the connection between work and leisure activities, researchers employed 129 people who worked and were active in hobbies like rock climbing, musical theatre and singing. They had them complete surveys to see how serious and committed they were to their hobbies and how demanding their jobs were. Then, each month for seven months, participants were asked how many hours they spent on their hobbies and how they rated their ability to perform at work.
Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work and that they do in an intense way, their on-the-job confidence can suffer. It’s likely because their work and leisure time have the same mental and physical demands,so they’re always feeling drained.
In contrast, people who have hobbies different from their work are happier and healthier. This is also true of those who choose a similar hobby but only participate in a light-hearted way. Those playful recreations act as a barrier between their professional and personal lives, giving them rest time to “recharge their batteries”,the researchers say.
“When we feel like we have the confidence to handle challenges in our jobs,we’re more likely to be able to build a sustainable job and remain healthy, productive, happy and employable over our lifetimes. It’s important to consider how our leisure activities might play a role in that process,” lead researcher Ciara Kelly said in a statement.
12.What’s the impact of your hobby
A.It surely improves your physical strength.
B.It helps you to recover from your stress.
C.It enables you to behave more actively.
D.It increases your willingness to work hard.
13.Which of the following is proper and reasonable according to Paragraph 2
A.A basketball coach plays basketball.
B.A writer keeps a diary every day.
C.An e-game developer surfs the Internet.
D.A doctor sometimes goes swimming.
14.What does the underlined word “drained” in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A.Worried. B.Exhausted.
C.Unconfident. D.Disappointed.
15.How can people benefit from hobbies similar to their work
A.Take them seriously. B.Set strict schedules for them.
C.Participate in them just for fun. D.Develop them into their business.

Anyone who knows me well would see me as an optimist.__16__ This was the case for me on a particularly cold January day.
I felt exhausted by the painful challenges I was dealing with in my personal life.__17__ — The gray sky blocked even a single ray of sunlight.
About midway through the day,I left work to get some lunch. Still feeling negative,I noticed that the sun had come out for a moment. I began to think about my negative attitude and reminded myself that I was responsible for choosing my state of mind.__18__ Even though I reminded myself of this truth,I couldn’t make the change.
As I stopped at a red light,I looked at the car in front of mine. The personalized license plate caught my eye — It read “SUNZOUT”. This brought an immediate smile to my face.__19__ And in the midst of the longest, darkest, coldest winter, this in itself was a blessing. But then my eyes moved to the car that was next to the SUNZOUT vehicle. The license plate on that car read “GROUCH”. This brought more than a smile to my face as I laughed out loud! Seeing the two opposite license plates at that exact moment in time strengthened my previous recognition of my ability to choose my attitude. __20__
I returned to work and shared my story with several co-workers who responded with warm laughter at what I refer to as my “message from beyond”. I learned that day that when we’re feeling too discouraged to bring ourselves out of an active state, relief is only a prayer away!
A.The weather seemed to match my mood.
B.Pessimists think the opposite way,however.
C.However, even optimists can temporarily lose hope.
D.It felt like a reminder that the sun was shining after all.
E.Do you think that the sunshine will spread throughout your life

C.Participate in them just for fun. D.Develop them into their business.
根据第一段中的“Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up(被压抑的) stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer.”
根据第二段“Researchers at the University of Sheffield’s Institute of Work Psychology in the UK found that developing hobbies can develop your confidence about how well you perform your job. But your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5 work.”
根据第四段画线词前的“Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work and that they do in an intense way, their on-the-job confidence can suffer. It’s likely because their work and leisure time have the same mental and physical demands...”
根据第五段“In contrast, people who have hobbies different from their work are happier and healthier. This is also true of those who choose a similar hobby but only participate in a light-hearted way.”

F.I felt my spirit lift as I made the decision to choose a positive attitude.
G.While I could not ignore the pain I was going through,I could choose to think positively.

19.D 根据本空前的“This brought an immediate smile to my face.

空格后面 “a total of forty years”是一段时间,因此答案用for。

(2023山东泰安市一中高二测试)A farmer grew some vegetables in his garden. One day his wife was ill and he had no money. He had to sell some cabbages and carrots in the market. The next morning he took two baskets of vegetables to the town. But it was snowing hard that afternoon and there were few people in the street. When his vegetables were sold out,it was dark. He bought some medicine and hurried to his village.
On his way home he saw a person lying in the snow. He placed his baskets on the ground and was going to help the person to get up. At that time he found it was a dead man and there was much blood on his body. He was so afraid that he ran away quickly, without taking the baskets with him.
The next afternoon the farmer was sent to the police station. Having shown the baskets,an officer asked,“Are these yours?”“Yes,sir,” the farmer answered timidly(胆怯地). “Have you killed the man?”“No,no,sir,” the farmer said in a hurry. “When did you see the dead man?” “About seven last evening.” “Did you see who killed the man?” “No,sir.” The officer brought out a knife and asked,“Have you seen it yet?” “No,sir.” The officer became angry and told a policeman to beat him up and send him into prison.
