Any 25th birthday is a cause for celebration. But it was even more so for Janus, a two-headed Greek tortoise (龟). Living in the Natural History Museum of Geneva, Switzerland, Janus is now believed to be the world’s oldest two-headed tortoise. The museum celebrated the special occasion with a day-long party filled with fun events, which included taking photos with the birthday “boy”.
In the wild, Greek tortoises can live up to two hundred years in their natural habitat. However, two-headed tortoises, like Janus, usually do not survive for that long. Unlike normal tortoises, they are unable to take back their two heads into their shell, making them highly easy to be attacked.
Janus, who has spent his entire life in the museum, faces no such danger. But life is not without challenges for the two-headed tortoise who also has two hearts and two pair s of lungs. Each head controls the front and back legs on its side of the body. The right head is more curious and more awake. The left head is more passive and loves to eat. This can lead to confusion when the two heads decide to go in different directions. To make matters worse, the two heads frequently rub against each other, resulting in skin sores (溃疡). Janus also has a hard time rolling back onto his feet when he accidentally turns over. If left on their backs for too long, tortoises can get sunburned, dehydrated (脱水的) and even die.
Fortunately, Janus has a special caregiver, Angelica Bourgoin, to make sure he lives along and health y life. The tortoise receives a daily massage and is bathed in green tea and flower water. He eats a special diet of organic fruits and vegetables, keeps active with walks, and rides on his custom skateboard. With such loving care, the two-headed tortoise will surely continue to break many more records for long life.
24. Why is it hard for two-headed tortoises to survive in the wild
A. They can’t avoid biting each other.
B. They can’t find enough food to eat.
C. They can’t hide from their enemies.
D They can’t run as fast as normal ones.
25. Where was Janus born
A. In the museum. B. In a pet store.
C. In the ocean. D. In Bourgoin’s home.
26. What will be Janus’s biggest threat if he’s left alone on its back
A. Different decisions. B. The death of thirst.
C. The pain on his skin. D. Two halves of body.
27. Which of the following can best describe Janus’s life
A. Free. B. Tough. C. Boring. D. Easy.

Homes are usually warmed with radiators (暖气片). Some homes are warmed by floor heating. Now, a new way of heating is being developed by using the “wallpaper” on your walls. This wallpaper is not decorative. It actually goes under and not over the wall-electrically heats a room. And this type of heating technology heats objects, even people, instead of the air and this helps you feel warmer.
The electric heating panels (嵌板) which are hidden in the wall are connected to the main electrical panels of your home. Each room can be heated independently through an app, so you do not have to heat unused rooms. It takes around 20 minutes to heat a room.
With rising prices for home heating, the panels seen like the right way to go. “It makes me happy that I don’t depend on gas,” Kris Bilski, an early user, said. About 23 million homes in the UK are connected to the gas grid (网) but the government wants to phase out gas-fired pots by 2035. Home heating is responsible for 17 percent of greenhouse gas materials, so removing fossil fuel-based heating will help the environment.
The new electric heating systems are easy to get for private homes and the company is currently testing the new technology in public housing in some cities. The types being tested can be fitted while people are still living in the apartment so it makes installation a lot easier.
Heating your home with this type of technology does not heat your water, so an additional heating system is required, but an energy efficient heater can be used.
While the wallpaper is greener, electricity in the UK is very costly so it is not an economic way to heat homes unless there is a renewable energy source like solar panels used. Still, reducing the dependence on fossil fuels will go a long way to green the UK and help the country meet its climate targets.
28. What can we infer about a room with this “wallpaper” heater
A. Special radiators are needed in in. B. It’s connected to solar panels.
C. The temperature in it varies less. D. It’s warmer than a normal room.
29. What does the underlined phrase “phase out” in Paragraph 3 mean

C. Restore gradually. D. Finish developing.
30. What is one of the advantages of wallpaper heating system
A. It looks beautiful. B. It’s easy to set up.
C. It heats up instantly. D. It fits all buildings.
31. What is the author’s attitude towards the use of this wallpaper heating system in the UK
A. Doubting. B. Optimistic.
C. Enthusiastic. D. Unfavorable.

In a recent game of pickleball, my teammate and I were falling far behind other teams. It was her turn to serve. We were both standing behind the baseline, paddles(球拍) up in ready position, when she nodded at me and said, “In it to win it.”
“Really ” I looked at her, surprised by her use of a catchy expression that was new to me. My inner self was never ready to accept even the tiniest suggestion that we should be trying to win the game.
In my life off the pickleball court, I enjoy yoga, folk dancing—anything but games with winners and losers, and I always prefer to be a observer rather than a participant in the world of sports.
Then pickleball came along. Suddenly, I didn’t want to be an observer any longer. I wanted to be a player myself. Like many people, I was first drawn to the game simply as a safe COVID-19 activity. Playing outdoors with people in my neighborhood allowed me to break out of social isolation(隔离).
But my addiction to the game comes from the sport’s low barrier of entry. The equipment isn’t particularly expensive. It’s a relatively easy game to learn, and a participant doesn’t need to be especially strong, tall or fast. Little wonder that everyone can now be seen throwing a green, orange or yellow plastic ball with holes in it across a net.
Pickleball is the first game I’ve ever wanted to win. I think it’s because of the excitement I feel when I hit an unreturnable ball down the middle of the court and score a point. Participating in a sport myself rather than cheering for others provides real proof that I can still work hard to achieve goals.
So, I’ve made a long-term commitment to it. I am embracing the game as my pickleball buddies embrace me. I’d forgotten how much fun it is to socialize while, doing something active. In that playful space of the court, I am facing directly my fears of winning and losing. In the meantime, doing something outside of my comfort zone feels magical. Now I wonder what contests I might be brave enough to enter next.
32. Why was the author surprised by what her teammate said in the recent game
A. She thought her teammate was too weak. B. She hadn’t considered winning or losing.
C. She didn’t know what her teammate meant. D. She misunderstood the rules of the game.
33. What is the main reason for the author’s love for pickleball
A. It is what she is good at. B. It allows her to make new friends.
C. It is affordable and accessible. D. It has many health benefits.
34. How has the author benefited from playing pickleball
A. She has overcome her fears of competitive sports. B. She has realized her own limitations.
C. She has become a more energetic person. D. She has recognized her talents for sports.
35. What does the author plan to do
A. Become a professional athlete. B. Recommend pickleball to more friends.
C. Explore some extreme sports. D. Continue playing pickleball.

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. l knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. She was ready for me. “No Santa Claus!” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad.”
“Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma ” l asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store. the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money.” she said, “and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
l was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class.
Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. l knew that because he never went out for recess(休息) during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I fingered the ten dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone ” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.

D. They can’t run as fast as normal ones.
25. Where was Janus born
A. In the museum. B. In a pet store.
C. In the ocean. D. In Bourgoin’s home.
26. What will be Janus’s biggest threat if he’s left alone on its back
A. Different decisions. B. The death of thirst.
C. The pain on his skin. D. Two halves of body.
27. Which of the following can best describe Janus’s life
A. Free. B. Tough. C. Boring. D. Easy.
【答案】24. C 25. A 26. B 27. D

A. Slop using. B. Improve greatly.

Suddenly I didn’t want to be an observer any longer.

【答案】Which factor leads to success, talent, struggle or enthusiasm In my viewpoint, struggle leads to success.
As the old saying goes, no pain, no gain. We will get nothing but only waste our life if we only daydream instead of struggling. Those who are lazy and sloppy to their work will never succeed.
Last year, I was chosen to participate in the sports meeting. Because I’m not good at sport, I felt anxious. I didn’t want to live up to others’ expectations. Through struggling with exercise, I got the third place in race walking.
We should be aware of that we should keep struggling. Only in this way, can we succeed!

【答案】One possible version:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, From Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby Decker’s house, explaining I was officially one of Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, and dashed for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded his doorbell and then Grandma and I hid in the car.
Grandma and l waited breathlessly in the bush for Bobby Decker’s front door to open. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he looked very astonished and then called his mother to go out. After hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Claus, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that time, I decided to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that he who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.
