Jazmin Sanchez's parents moved to Florida from Mexico shortly after they married in 1987. Over the years, they worked hard picking fruits and vegetables at farms and saved so they could provide Jazmin and her two sisters with opportunities.
"They told me that I could do anything I wanted in life, as long as I had an education and a passion," said Jazmin, a student studying public health at the University of South Florida (USF). "I don't want them to have to work as much as we do," said Alida, Jazmin's mother. "I want them to be able to choose careers that they love. "
Thousands of first-generation college students like Jazmin choose USF each year. While the definition (定义) of a first-generation student may vary nationally, at USF, they're students whose parents or guardians did not complete a bachelor's (学士) degree in the United States.
There are several programs to offer help to first-generation college students. Student Support Services created an online platform for them. The program teaches study skills and offers personalized advising, career exploration, and networking.
Jaelyn Wise, a first-generation USF graduate from Sanford, began her college journey with Student Support Services, and then later became a coach for the group, mentoring (辅导) younger first-generation students. "Student Support Services helps you through everything," Jaelyn said. "I love what I do. I relate to where first generation students come from. I love telling them my story because it shows them that college isn't easy, but it can be done. "
Support can begin in the summer to prepare first-generation students for fall classes. Through the summer program, students can learn about campus resources, skills needed to be successful and more.
"USF is important to first generation students because we are changing not only their lives, but the lives of their families," said Rhea Law, president of USF. "We're making a significant difference for them and for their communities for years to come. "

As the planet gets hotter, the need for cool living environments is becoming more pressing. But air conditioning (AC) is the main cause of global warming since AC units use lots of energy. Now, researchers from McGill University have found in a new study an inexpensive and green solution to AC in hot climates.
The researchers set out to answer how to achieve a new benchmark (基准) in natural cooling inside naturally conditioned buildings in hot climates such as Southern California. They checked the use of roof materials that radiate (散发) heat into the open air, even under direct sunlight, and how to put them together with temperature driven ventilation (通风). These cool radiator materials and coatings are often used to stop roofs overheating. Researchers have also used them to improve the performance of coolers. There is a real possibility of applying the materials to housing design more fully, so they can not only radiate indoor heat into the outside of a house in a natural way, but also drive regular and healthy air changes.
"We found we could maintain air temperatures several degrees below the surrounding temperature," said Remy Fortin, lead author of the study. "We did this taking healthy ventilation air changes into consideration. " This was a significant challenge, considering air exchanges are a source of heating when the aim is to keep a room cooler than the outside.
The researchers hope the findings will be used to positively impact communities suffering from dangerous climate heating. "We hope that materials scientists and engineers will be interested in these results, and that our work will inspire more creative thinking for how to make breakthroughs in radiative cooling materials while finding simple but effective housing design solutions," said Salmaan Craig, who took part in the project.
28.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the study
A.Its process. B.Its priority.
C.Its reason. D.Its schedule.
29.What did the researchers have to consider while carrying out the study
A.Houseplants. B.The cost of a house,
C.Air exchanges. D.The pay of a designer.
30.What does Salmaan expect of the findings
A.They'll cut the price of the power.
B.They'll bring about creative ideas.
C.They'll speed up the production.
D.They'll benefit local developers.
31.Which is the most suitable title for the text
A.A Green Solution to Air Conditioning
B.The Hardship of Building an AC Unit
C.A Promising Future of New Energy
D.The Cause of Rising Temperatures

When you were a teenager, your parents probably warned you once or twice not to get a tattoo (文身) just because your friends did it. A new study shows that the influence of friends—for good and for bad—remains in our older years, as well.
The study authors analyzed (分析) surveys from nearly 13,000 over-50-year olds. The study found that those who had high-quality friendships actually lived longer. Those people took the survey three times over eight years and those with the good friends were 24% less likely to die during that time. Having good friends was connected with positive health behaviors and benefits, like a 9% increase in likelihood to exercise, and a 17% lower likelihood of feeling anxious, among other findings.
The dangers of loneliness have become more and more apparent in recent years as one in four older people now experience social isolation (孤立) worldwide, which carries higher risks of anxiety, and other problems, according to the World Health Organization.
Unlike family members, we can choose our friends freely. Think of the stress you might feel at a big family gathering versus the relaxation you might share with your closest friends at a birthday party.
But those effects of friendship that your mom warned you about as a teenager appear to still exist in your later years. Those people in the study with the best friendships were also more likely to smoke and drink heavily.
William Chopik, study co-author, notes this doesn't encourage people to smoke or drink heavily just because they have friends. "You can generalize these results with great confidence to the population as a whole," Chopik says. "My future work will dig deeper into these details about friendship. But the nature of friendships remains a powerful public health opportunity. The fact that you can make new friends can improve a lot of different parts of your life. "
32.How do good friendships influence people according to the study
A.They tend to use social media.
B.They lose interest in exercising.
C.They are less likely to suffer anxiety.
D.They are totally free from loneliness.
33.What does the underlined word "apparent" in paragraph 3 mean
A.Limited. B.Distant. C.Positive. D.Obvious.
34.What does Chopik plan to do in the future
A.Build up confidence. B.Interview his friends.
C.Develop a good habit. D.Do further research.
35.Where is this text probably taken from
A.A children's story. B.A health magazine.
C.A textbook. D.A diary entry.

My mom is one of the least wasteful people I know. She often brings her basket to the market to carry food. 36. . The key is to be creative about redesigning your behavior to cut plastic and other waste. Here are a few simple ways.

A lot of low-waste solutions require buying special containers. But you don't need to spend money on them. 37. . Maybe you can use a cola bottle to water flowers. Or maybe you can use empty boxes and other food containers to store leftovers or organize other small things.
Save what you can
There are many things in your household you can save before dropping them. Maybe you can repair an old pair of jeans instead of buying a new pair. Or maybe you can cut up old T-shirts into rags (抹布). 38. .
Depend less on pre-packaged (包装) foods
39. . Tomatoes come in plastic containers, and some drinks come in plastic bottles. So try to source your food in ways that don't require you to get it from a package. Instead of buying vegetables in a non-recyclable container at the store, you can try to plant a vegetable garden in your community.
40.

The Words of Kindness
Last week, I was shopping in the local supermarket. My 24-year-old daughter happened to be with me as she had just arrived home for a much-needed visit because she was going to work abroad for six months. As we were walking through the aisles (走道) and picking things she needed, we heard a child's crying that would last more than fifteen minutes. I wanted to walk over to investigate the situation, already picturing the scene in my mind. No doubt, the cries of the young boy could be heard clearly across the store.
My daughter came up to me and said, "Mom! Is that what I sounded like when I was little "
"Yes, Rach, you sounded just like that," I replied.
We tried to continue our shopping, but the loud cries made by the boy who was asking his mom for something continued for what felt like no ending. Several more minutes went by, and the boy just wouldn't stop. I felt it necessary to follow the cries. As I approached the aisle, I could see several people watching us at the other end of the aisle, talking to each other and shaking their heads. They would walk away and then turn around with their carts (购物车) to continue their talks and figure out what was happening.
I arrived at the aisle to find a twenty-something mother standing in the middle of the aisle calmly telling the boy, "No. " She was not going to get whatever the boy wanted. He was holding his mother's arms, crying, trying to get her to move. His face turned red with tears. He remained seated on the floor and beat at his mom's legs with his arms while crying at the top of his voice.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I walked over to the mom and touched her arm.
At that moment, I could see relief wash over her.

I walked over to the mom and touched her arm. I told her she was doing a great job and that everything would be OK one day. I then called my daughter over and introduced her to the young mother. I explained that my daughter had been just like her son when she was that age. I told her that my daughter often drove me crazy when she was young. "I know exactly what you are dealing with right now, and I know how you feel," I said. "It does get better. Believe me, it really does. "
At that moment, I could see relief wash over her. Her son stopped crying for a minute and looked at us with a confused expression. His momentary silence gave us a chance to share a few words. I told her that she was an amazing mom, and her son would thank her for being his mom someday. She smiled and thanked me for the kind words. Parents who have a child with special needs just need a kind word to know that everything will be OK. Sometimes, that's all it takes.
