It was 1963 in the Toronto suburb. I was eight years old and hockey(冰球)-crazy. My next-to-zero skills had not stopped my passion for the game. The players of the great hockey club Toronto Maple Leafs were of course my heroes, and their posters and photos covered the walls of my room.
There is always some price to pay for maintaining a love. I raised funds in an old-fashioned way, selling something the public could actually sink their teeth into. I joined the local annual event Margaret’s Doughnuts(甜甜圈)to sell doughnuts, which offered choices of honey-glazed or chocolate-glazed.
Door-to-door I went, notebook in hand to record. I sold dozens of dozens; hardly a soul turned me down. My notebook was almost full, and my stomach was almost empty when I went up the last house on the south side.
I rang the doorbell and went over my speech while staring at the screen door. Suddenly, the door opened. My unforgettable memory was looking up from a large pair of fuzzy slippers, way up, to the face staring down. I stood there speechless for what seemed 10 years, opening and closing my mouth like a fish out of water. Collecting my calmness, but still unable to go into doughnut-promoting overdrive, I told him something he seemed have already known and he replied with a no d and a smile.
I have an unclear memory of murmuring through my speech “Please-buy-some-doughnuts”, and then a vivid memory of him taking the notebook from my hand. I followed with new information—that we shared our given name. With pride from our first-name-basis farewells, I flew home holding the notebook tightly to my chest.
The next morning before the school bell, I cautiously showed off the precious paper. It is surely mine alone to claim: I sold a dozen doughnuts to Tim Horton, one of my most respected players who lived a mere three blocks away!

In 1983, Ski Rixen USA became the first water ski cable park in the United States. Located in Deerfield Beach, Florida, the park offers riders a chance to experience all kinds of water sports.
In the past 40 years, Ski Rixen USA has welcomed more than 1.5 million visitors. The park was the brainchild of engineer Bruno Rixen. Born in 1931 in Germany, Rixen grew frustrated with the sport of water skiing, which required pulling by a motor boat.
“He used to wait for four hours in line to do three laps around the lake,” explained Allan Wlodarczyk, the manager of Ski Rixen USA. He added that riding five minutes and waiting another four hours sparked Rixen’s idea of cable parks. Rather than relying on a boat. Rixen considered his own cable way. He also designed skis and set up a power source.
“The first cable was actually an old farm tractor.” Wlodarczyk said. “Rixen took the wheels off, attached some ropes to the wheel disks, and started pulling people back and forth around the lake.” Over the years, Rixen improved his design and earned several patents. He opened the world’s first commercial cable water park in 1966 in Benidorm, Spain.
The sport grew from entertainment to international contests. Rixen died in 2020, but his idea has taken hold around the world. Today, there are more than 500 cable water parks on different continents. Typically, the cable tows riders at a speed of about 20 miles per hour. But for beginners, who can take lessons, the speed is about 15 miles per hour.
Ski Rixen USA also offers riding opportunities and events to people with special needs to ski effortlessly. “We have a specially designed ski, called a sit ski,” Wlodarczyk said. “It’s a larger board with a lot of surface area. The riders are completely seated in the water and don’t actually have to hold onto the rope.”

How to make a string drip system(滴灌系统)to water your plants
You’re all packed and ready for your vacation. 36 We’ll help you leave all your worries behind with simple ways to water plants while away. Whether your plants are indoors or outdoors, we’ve got them covered.
Place a jug(罐)filled with one gallon of water next to your plants. Position the jug where it is out of direct sunlight so the water won’t evaporate(蒸发)too quickly. Don’t fill the jug with water yet. 37 If you’re only going for a few days and have a small plant, a mason jar will be big enough to keep it watered.
Cut a long piece of cotton or nylon string. Measuring isn’t necessary, but make sure the string is long enough to reach from the jug to the base of your plants. Cut one piece of string for each of your plants. If you have a lot of pieces of string, tie a paperclip(回形针)on each piece to keep them separated. 38 If it can’t, this method won’t work.
39 Lower the string until the end of the string touches the bottom. This way, you won’t run into the risk of the jug running out of water while you are away. If you tie paperclips on your string, drop the paperclips into the water to hold the end of the string down.
Push the other end of the string about three inches into the soil. 40 Partial sun is fine, but if there is too much sunlight, the string will dry out before it can get the water to the plants.
Position the mouth of the jug above the top of the plant. If your jug isn’t high enough, place it on a shelf, upturned pot, or a large book. Gravity will pull water from the jug down into your plants’ soil.
A. But what about your plants
B. The string must be able to hold water.
C. Place one end of the string inside the jug.
D. Make sure the string is out of direct sunlight.
E. The plants prefer direct sunlight to being indoors.
F. Generally, a gallon of water will keep your plants watered for about a week.
G. Place your plants indoors or outdoors, depending on what works best for you.

Since the late 1990s, Dr Daniel Tanita has been engaged in volunteer dental work for children in his hometown, a remote small country. His devotion and effort have not gone unnoticed.
When Tanita first started his volunteer work, he found himself in less-than-ideal conditions. The lack of proper dental facilities meant that he had to conduct dental checkups in a cramped(狭窄的)closet. With only one small chair and no windows, it was far from an ideal environment for providing dental care. The absence of windows resulted in the absence of natural light, creating a dim atmosphere within the small space. The lack of fresh air circulation made the environment stuffy(闷热的)and hot. Despite these limitations, Tanita persisted his volunteer work.
Over the years, Tanita’s passion for making a difference in the lives of children in need grew stronger and stronger. He witnessed firsthand the impact that early dental work and education could have on improving the overall well-being of these children. This realization fueled his determination to create a better environment for providing dental care.
The idea of building a permanent dental clinic in a local elementary school took shape in Tanita’s mind. He recognized the importance of having a dedicated(专用的)space where children could receive the dental care they were desperately in need of. With the support of a few other volunteers who shared his vision, Tanita became the driving force behind the clinic’s construction.
The project was not without its challenges. Securing funding, finding a suitable place within the school, and dealing with various related considerations required a great deal of effort and perseverance. However, Tanita’s firm devotion and passion for making a positive impact on the lives of these children motivated him to overcome all these issues.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Finally, the permanent dental clinic became a reality. Since then, children at the new clinic have been enjoying a better experience.

M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday—Spanish; Tuesday—Italian; Wednesday—German; and Friday—French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

M: OK, you should call that man. He will be really glad to get his wallet back.
W: Yes, I’m sure he will. I will call him after dinner.
M: I think that man is probably very worried now, so you’d better call him right away.

M: People all over the world enjoy sports. Sports help people keep healthy and happy, helping them to live longer. Sports change with the seasons. People play different games in winter and summer. Games and sports often grow out of people’s work and everyday activities. The Arabs use horses or camels in much of their everyday life. They use them in their sports, too. Some sports are so interesting that people everywhere go in for them.
Football, for example, has spread around the world. Swimming is popular in all countries near the sea or those with many rivers. Some sports or games go back to thousands of years, like running or jumping. Chinese boxing, for example, has a very long history. But basketball and volleyball are rather new. Neither one is two hundred years old yet. People are inventing new sports or games all the time. People from different countries may not be able to understand each other, but after a game, they often become good friends. Sports help to train a person’s character. One learns to fight hard but fight fair, to win without pride and to lose with dignity.

What Can We Do To Build A Low-carbon Campus
Nowadays, the world is struggling with the climate crisis to seek for sustainable development. Likewise, it is crucial for us students to get involved in it by building a low-carbon campus.
There are several steps for us to take to make it. In the first place, instead of taking cars to and from school, school buses or bicycles are wiser options to reduce pollution. Furthermore, we ought to eat up what we buy and avoid wasting food in the school cafeteria. Last but not least, it is important for us to avoid leaving the lights on in the daytime or leaving water running after washing.
Altogether, only if we can make small changes in our life can we make a big difference to our campus and even to the Earth! Let’s take the lead in creating a low-carbon campus.
第二节:
参考范文:
Finally, the permanent dental clinic became a reality. The new clinic is spotlessly clean, with a row of new dental equipment and dozens of neatly arranged chairs. The clinic has clean and transparent windows on all four walls. The scene that only existed in Tanita’s dreams has incredibly become a reality. Everything is so refreshing and satisfying to him, yet it also seems unbelievable. Determined and confident, he decided to do his best to serve the children good dental care.
Since then, children at the new clinic have been enjoying a better experience. Previously, whenever thinking of the cramped closet, they would feel resistant to have their teeth cared. Things have changed now. When it comes to seeing a dentist in the new clinic, though children are still a bit afraid, they are amazed by the brand new clinic when they enter the clinic. Gradually, more and more children are willing to receive dental care here. Their teeth have become whiter and brighter with Tanita’s help, and they laugh more, which makes them more confident and brilliant.
