During that special period, lockdown and homesickness combined to leave me feeling lonely and longing to meet people. So, when I received an email inviting volunteers to join the university’s graduate students’ society, I was mentally disturbed (不安的). While I originally worried that extracurricular activities would take my focus away from my Ph.D. work, my professor considered it a chance to make connections with others and encouraged me to have a try.
I looked through the list of the open volunteer roles. Then a newly developed company matching graduate students with internships (实习职位) caught my eye. The program needed coordinators (协调员) to help bring in industry partners and work with the university administration and student applicants. The opportunity to interact with different groups was inviting to me, so I decided to apply in spite of my lack of relevant experience.
The first few weeks in my new role were challenging. Along with my normal Ph.D.work, I was suddenly managing a team of four volunteers and arranging virtual meetings. Luckily, the director was supportive. It turned out that the interactions became enjoyable and rewarding.
I also learned a lot from my members. One day, a member came to me, feeling upset that I wasn’t including her more fully in decision-making. I was upset too; didn’t she trust my leadership After calming down, I saw that she had a point. I reached out to other team members, getting a similar reply. Then I began to ask them to lead some meetings and encouraged them to express their views. This new approach allowed us to meet our targets while keeping everyone happy.
Besides, my work with the graduate students’ society unexpectedly broadened my mind. Before I joined, I only knew about academic career paths, and I assumed that was my future. But when one professional asked me what I would like to achieve, I began to think about what is the most important thing. I now know I want to make a direct, measurable impact. Getting closer to completing my Ph.D., I’m approaching job searches, clear about my expectations.

A. She realized her disadvantages in leadership.
B. She expressed her complaint to other members.
C. She had to face competition in team management.
D. She persuaded her team members to change their views.
27. Which of the following can best describe the author

A flood hit Yellowstone National Park on June 13, 2022. The disaster was caused by a combination of unusually heavy rain and rapid snow melt. The high and fast water flows destroyed bridges and swept away entire roadways, leaving communities and homes isolated (隔绝的). Fortunately, the approximately 10,000 park visitors were safely evacuated.
The town of Gardiner, along the Montana-Wyoming border, was particularly hard hit. The floodwaters left almost 900 people with no power or water for many days. Gardiner’s economy, which heavily depends on the almost three-quarters of a million visitors who pass through the park’s north gate annually, is likely to take a hit. The floodwaters severely damaged the main north entrance road to Yellowstone and could take years to rebuild.
Park officials have begun work on improving an alternative road to Gardiner. This will ensure that locals can access food, supplies, and other essential emergency services. A limited number of tourists may also be allowed into Gardiner once the road is stable.
Yellowstone’s north gate is closed indefinitely (无限期地). But the park’s south gate opened to visitors on June 22, 2022. Park officials have started a new entry system to prevent overcrowding. It is based on the last number of the visitor’s vehicle license plate and the calendar date of the month. Cars with odd numbers can visit the park on odd days of the month, while those with even numbers can go on even days.
Established in 1872, Yellowstone is America’s oldest national park. The 3,472-square-mile reserve spans three states and is home to a lot of unique wildlife. It is known for its natural beauty that includes mountains, rivers and lakes. The forces of fire and ice shaped the park over thousands of years.
28. What can be inferred from the second paragraph
A. Gardiner’s economy would suffer a lot.
B. Communities and homes were left in ruins.
C. Almost 900 people were trapped in the park.
D. The town of Gardiner was slightly affected.
29. What can we learn from the text
A. Local people can get daily necessities from visitors.
B. The forces of flood and snow shaped the park over years.
C. The park has adopted a new system to avoid overcrowding.
D. More tourists may pack into the park for geological features.
30. What can be the best title for the text
A. Flooding Has Caused Widespread Damage in the US
B. Yellowstone National Park Was Closed due to Flooding
C. Natural Beauty Makes Yellowstone America’s Oldest Park
D. Yellowstone National Park Partially Reopens After Flooding
31. Where is this text most likely from
A. A guidebook. B. A news report. C. A research paper. D. A fiction.

Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms
“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.”This is a way of saying“Keep off the grass.”Or“people mountain, people sea”,which means“very crowded”.
These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish,if all you know is“good good study, day day up”,you will be considered“out man”.
Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example,a Chinese idiom is translated as“smilence”,a combination by the English word smile and silence.
Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs, products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors.Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years.“I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners,it’s actually quite charming to see them.I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture.”
However,Chinglish will probably become a“cultural relic”in the near future.Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years.“It is very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries,”a Beijinger said.
Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it’s Chinese’s turn.
32. What can we call Chinglish
A. English words which get new Chinese meanings.
B. The Chinese words which are difficult to translate.
C. The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.
D. The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.
33 What does“smilence”most probably mean
A. Saying nothing but to smile. B. Smiling without being noticed.
C. Laughing at somebody. D. Knowing little about speech.
34. What is Swire’s attitude to Chinglish
A. It can show the humour of Chinese. B. It will attract more foreign tourists.
C. It helps him to learn Chinese well. D. It seems part of Chinese culture.
35. Why Chinglish is likely to become a“cultural relic”in Beijing
A Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
B. Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C. Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.
D. Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.

Many people think of sharks as dangerous monsters. But human beings cause a far greater danger to them than they do to us. Although shark attacks do occur, they are quite rare. According to one estimate, however, humans kill 100 million sharks every year. ____36____
Why should we save the sharks
Sharks take up the top position on the food chain in the ocean. As sharks die off, the population of the animals that sharks consume will increase. This, in turn, means that the number of the creatures those animals eat will drop. ____37____ Fish that eat algae (藻类) are also included. This can cause algae to spread so much that it damages coral reefs.
____38____ The ocean not only produces more oxygen than all the rainforests on Earth combined, but also removes half of the man-made greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Once sharks die off, the global ecosystem will be upset, affecting all creatures including human beings.
Don’t use shark products
First, vitamin energy drinks and leather goods can be made from shark parts. ____39____ In addition, shark meat is sold around the world, sometimes under misleading names such as rock salmon or whitefish. Shark fin soup is a popular dish. However, the process of getting fins is cruel. Fishermen cut the shark’s fins off and then throw the shark back into the water, still alive. ____40____ Sharks breathe by swimming, so a shark that can’t swim will die.
A. It is time for children to learn about sharks.
B. Shark oil is also used in many popular beauty products.
C. Then the shark dies slowly, sometimes over several days.
D. Actually, the killing of sharks will affect the whole planet.
E. People in some countries are especially keen on shark products.
F. Among them are some sea fish that humans consume every day.
G. This number is a warning that many kinds of sharks may die out.

M: I was quite certain it wouldn’t last long. It was March in Italy.
W: I wasn’t worried at first, but I didn’t have much petrol left so I switched off the engine. I tried to phone for help but couldn’t get through.
M: How did you stay warm With the car heater
W: That meant having the engine on so I only used it a bit. Instead I got all of my jumpers and trousers from my suitcases and wore them all night. I was still frozen, though, and wished I had some coffee or tea with me.
M: So you spent the whole night inside the car
W: Yes. I managed to contact the emergency services finally. They knew my location from my phone signal. They’d called to ask if I needed an ambulance and luckily I didn’t need it, so they just cleared the snow and led me along the road back to the main road.

First of all, applicants must be over 18 years of age. The company apologizes, but there can be no exceptions to this rule. Second, people interested in these positions may not have police records. A parking ticket and things like that are, of course, no problem. The employer will, of course, check with the police to confirm your clean record.
In addition, applicants must supply references from past or present employers or teachers along with their recent CV. These references must be relevant to the applicant’s work habits. Remember, these are references from employers or teachers. A note from your dear old Mum won’t do. Worldwide Helpers assures me that they will contact these references to confirm they are genuine.
Although all positions are volunteers, the employer will cover some of your expenses. For example, they will pay for transportation to and from the job site. Aside from that, the cost of phone calls is covered. But I’m sorry to say that you have to have dinner at your own home.

A Flooding Has Caused Widespread Damage in the US

33. What does“smilence”most probably mean
A. Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
B. Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C. Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.
D. Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.
【答案】32. C 33. A 34. D 35. D
【解析】
【分析】本文是说明文。如今, 世界英语不单单受美式英语和英式英语的影响, 英语词汇和汉语语法的结合还导致了越来越多的“中国式英语”的出现。
【32题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“more Chinglish words have been created, for example, a Chinese idiom is translated as“smilence”,a combination by the English word smile and silence.”
根据第四段结尾“a combination by the English word smile and silence”可知,根据中文意思把“微笑”和“沉默”结合,即表示“笑而不语”。故选A项。
【34题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中Swire说话的内容“I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture.” 我认为如果中国的英语翻译都很完美,那么中国文化就会丢失一些东西,可知, 他认为中国式英语是中国文化的一部分。故选D项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的 “Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years. ” 北京已经制定了一项全面计划,在五年内提高外语服务和纠正中式英语。所以中式英语可能将不存在了,故选D项。

D. Actually the killing of sharks will affect the whole planet.
E. People in some countries are especially keen on shark products.
F. Among them are some sea fish that humans consume every day.
G. This number is a warning that many kinds of sharks may die out.

【36题详解】
根据前文“But human beings cause a far greater danger to them than they do to us. Although shark attacks do occur, they are quite rare. According to one estimate, however, humans kill 100 million sharks every year.(但是人类对它们造成的危险比它们对我们造成的危险大得多。虽然鲨鱼袭击事件时有发生,但非常罕见。然而,据估计,人类每年杀死1亿只鲨鱼。)”可知,此处是指前文中提到的数据表明鲨鱼正在灭绝,所以选项G“这个数字是一个警告,许多种类的鲨鱼可能会灭绝。”切合文意。故选G。
【37题详解】
根据前文“As sharks die off, the population of the animals that sharks consume will increase. This, in turn, means that the number of the creatures those animals eat will drop.(随着鲨鱼的灭绝,鲨鱼食用的动物数量将会增加。反过来,这意味着这些动物吃的生物数量将会下降。)”和后文“Fish that eat algae (藻类) are also included.(以藻类为食的鱼类也包括在内。)”可知,此处是对因此数量下降的生物进行举例,所以选项F“其中有一些是人类每天食用的海鱼。”切合文意。故选F。
【38题详解】
根据后文“Once sharks die off, the global ecosystem will be upset, affecting all creatures including human beings.(一旦鲨鱼灭绝,全球生态系统将受到破坏,影响到包括人类在内的所有生物。)”可知,此处是指鲨鱼灭绝会影响全球,所以选项D“事实上,捕杀鲨鱼会影响整个地球。”切合文意。故选D。
【39题详解】
根据前文“First, vitamin energy drinks and leather goods can be made from shark parts.(首先,维生素能量饮料和皮革制品可以用鲨鱼的身体部位制成。)”可知,此处是讲鲨鱼的用途,所以选项B“鲨鱼油也被用于许多流行的美容产品中。”切合文意。故选B。
【40题详解】
根据前文“However, the process of getting fins is cruel. Fishermen cut the shark’s fins off and then throw the shark back into the water, still alive.(然而,获取鱼鳍的过程是残酷的。渔民们割下鲨鱼的鳍,然后把还活着的鲨鱼扔回水中。)”和后文“Sharks breathe by swimming, so a shark that can’t swim will die.(鲨鱼靠游泳呼吸,所以不会游泳的鲨鱼会死。)”可知,此处是指在被获取鱼鳍后鲨鱼会渐渐死去,所以选项C“然后鲨鱼慢慢死去,有时会持续几天。”切合文意。故选C。
