When Randy Smalls found out that his daughter, ReOnna, was in a group of students who bullied(霸凌) a girl at school, he couldn’t bear to sit back.
As someone all-too-familiar with being bullied, he felt they should say sorry to Ryan Reese, the girl who was getting picked on. And in doing so, he also found a way to teach his own daughter a lesson. He decided to help Ryan buy brand new clothes. ReOnna was upset, especially because she is into fashion. So Randy asked her to come with them and help pick out Ryan’s new clothes. Randy also took Ryan to get her hair done at asalon (美发厅). Randy’s generosity became inspiration. Several local salons also offered to help keep her looking beautiful in the months that followed.
Upset as Re’Onna was at first, the more time she spent with Ryanthe more she began to truly understand the importance of not bullying. Not only because it’s not okay to hurt others but because you never know what someone else is going through. For Ryan, that included losing her dad, grandpa, and aunt in a short period of time. “I wasn’t expecting it,” Ryan said. “I just started to cry. It really took me deeper down in my depression.”
“As parents, we have to take responsibility for what our children do,” Randy said. “We can teach our children, but when they go and are around other children, something terrible may happen. When situations like this happen we have to take action and be the parent and not the friend.”

More than half the world’s population will be regarded as obese by 2035 if action is not taken: the World Obesity Federation warns. Obese is a medical term used to describe a person with an excess of body fat.
Its report says, more than four billion people will be affected with rates rising fastest among both boys and girls. The rates are expected to double from 2020 levels among them. The report predicts the cost of obesity will be up to more than $4 trillion ( 3. 3 trillion) every year by 2035.
The report also stresses that low-or middle-income countries in Africa and Asia are expected to see the greatest rises. The first reason lies in that people there prefer to eat highly processed foods. In the second place, they are likely to sit too long. Thirdly, in those countries, there are fewer policies to control food supply and marketing. Last but not the least, people there are short of healthcare services to help in weight management and health education.
The president of the federation, Louise Baur, described the report’s findings as a clear warning to countries to act now. If they don’t take any actionthey will be faced with endless bad effects in the future. Baur said that governments and policymakers around the world need to do all they can to avoid passing health, social, and economic costs on to the younger generation. They should find out what are the root causes of obesity.
The data published in the report will be presented to the UN on Monday

Because my stories keep my heart pounding at night with the possibility of it all, when I can’t get words on paper, I want to scream. All my energy pools at the bottom of my heart, where it continues to yell at me all day long, “Write! Write! Write!” I have to quiet the voice like a hidden pet, shushing (发嘘声) it over and over until I get the chance to leave, laptop in hand, stories pouring out of my mind.
What poor, unfortunate lives we artists live! We’re tortured by our words, whether they’re circling around in our minds at 3 am or written on paper, looking sad and regretful that we’ve put them there. Our words laugh at us before and after they leave our bodies.
I messaged a writing mentor (导师) when I found myself running in circles. With only a small window of time to myself each afternoon, I found it hard to write. If only I had more time, I could finish my book. If only people would leave me alone, I could become an accomplished writer. It was everyone else’s fault.
Small — my mentor told me to start small but keep going. “Do what you can, when you can. Let that be enough during the busy seasons.” In her eyes, she was once me. She was once crazy with tasks that kept her hands pushing, pulling, grabbing and moving endlessly. She recognized herself in the way I talked with starry eyes about my dreamy writing goals and plans. Essays, articles and short stories flowered in my rich mind.
In a few wise words, she gave me the freedom to write in small periods of time she called “the cracks of the day”. She argued that I should run after publishing with the same desire as ever. But in her patient voice, I heard a gentle reminder of stopping running so hard and instead slowing to a sustainable pace.
So I write. I submit. I live, and I dream.
13. What can we infer about the author from the first paragraph
A. She has a strong desire to write. B. She has serious heart problems.
C. She is forced to write constantly. D. She is unable to focus on writing.
14. What does the underlined word “tortured” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Threatened. B. Troubled. C. Inspired. D. Impressed.
15. What problem did the author have in writing
A. She suffered from a serious lack of time.
B. Her writing was far from satisfying.
C. She had no idea what to write.
D. She has no one to rely on.
16. Which of the following can sum up the writing mentor’s suggestion to the author
A. All roads lead to Rome. B. Strike while the iron is hot.
C. No pains, no gains. D. Constant drops wear away a stone.
A 14. B 15. A 16. D
根据第一段中的“Because my stories keep my heart pounding at night with the possibility of it all, when I can’t get words on paper, I want to scream. All my energy pools at the bottom of my heart, where it continues to yell at me all day long, “Write! Write! Write!”(因为我的故事让我的心在晚上怦怦直跳,因为这一切都有可能发生,当我无法在纸上写下文字时,我想尖叫。我所有的精力都集中在心底,它整天不停地对我大喊:“写!写!写!”)”可推知,作者有着强烈的写作欲望。故选A。
根据划线词下文“whether they’re circling around in our minds at 3 am or written on paper, looking sad and regretful that we’ve put them there.(不管它们是凌晨三点在我们的脑海里盘旋,还是写在纸上,看起来很难过,很后悔我们把它们放在了那里)”可推知,作者因为自己写的话折磨着。
根据第三段中的“With only a small window of time to myself each afternoon, I found it hard to write.(每天下午只有一小段属于自己的时间,我发现很难写作)”可知,作者因为缺乏时间而不能很好地写作。故选A。

E
“I feel lonely and hopeless, ” said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. “It seems that nobody wants to become my friend. What’s wrong with me ”
Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character-even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular-experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. After all, we’ve all heard “No man is an island.” That’s true. We all need others in our lives.
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection, many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. We take a safer way and wait for others to make friends with us. But if we want friends, we’ve got to get beyond this.
If making friends is your goal as well you need to consider taking some measures.
Be willing to take the initiative (主动). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive (无攻击性) way that you are interested in being friends with her.
Reach out to those who are lonely. When you see someone at school sitting alone, go over and talk to her. And don’t let popularity decide whom you reach out to. You’ll often be surprised at the beautiful qualities behind a shy appearance. Ask questions. Start your first conversation by asking this possible friend what she likes to do or asking about her family. Be sure to ask questions that cannot be replied with “yes” or “no”. For example, don’t ask “Do you have a dog ” Instead, say “So, tell me about your pets. ” Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer.
17. Why does the author begin the text with Lisa’s worry
A. To set a sad tone.
B. To share Lisa’s pain.
C To teach readers a lesson.
D. To introduce the topic.
18. What can be a risk caused by reaching out to others according to the passage
A. Putting ourselves in danger.
B. Being treated in a rude way.
C. Being refused by others.
D. Losing interest in communicating.
19. What can we know from Paragraph 5
A. Popular people are often easy-going.
B. Just waiting for chances will help you make friends.
C. Shy people are hard to talk to.
D. A suitable way is important in making friends.
20. Why does the author suggest not asking “yes” or “no” questions
A. It is considered unfriendly.
B. It isn’t good for keeping a conversation going.
C. It will leave a bad first impression.
D. It shows the poor quality of the speaker.
D 18. C 19. D 20. B
根据第一段中““I feel lonely and hopeless, ” said Lisa, a bright teenager from a loving home. (“我感到孤独和绝望,”丽莎说,她是一个聪明少女,来自一个充满爱的家庭。)”以及第二段“Like Lisa, many of us experience loneliness. The truth is that all people, no matter what their age or character-even the most outgoing, wealthy and popular-experience loneliness at least sometimes. It’s healthy and natural to want to be around people who care. (像丽莎一样,我们中的许多人都经历过孤独。事实是,所有的人,无论他们的年龄或性格如何——即使是最外向、最富有和最受欢迎的人——至少有时也会经历孤独。想和关心自己的人在一起是健康和自然的。)”可知,文章开篇通过提及丽莎的例子,是为了引出文章的主题即每个人都经历过孤独,无论年龄或者性格。故选D。
【18题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, explains that if we want friends, we must be friendly and reach out to others. But it has risk. Because we are often afraid of rejection, many of us are unwilling to reach out to others. (Solomon是有史以来最聪明的人,他解释说,如果我们想要朋友,我们必须友好地主动联系他人。但它也有风险。因为我们经常害怕被拒绝,我们中的许多人都不愿意与他人接触。)”可知,主动联系他人,与他人结交的过程中是有风险的,该风险就是会被他人所拒绝。故选C。
【19题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Be willing to take the initiative (主动). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive (无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her.(愿意主动采取行动。如果你看到一个你想认识的人,不要等她先行动。靠近她,开始一场对话。以一种非攻击性的方式让她知道你对与她成为朋友感兴趣。)”可知,本段主要讲述的是合适的交友方式很重要,即主动采取行动去认识自己想认识的人,不要被动等待,而是主动行动,以无攻击性的方式让对方知道你对与她成为朋友是感兴趣的。故选D。
【20题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Avoiding asking “yes” or “no” questions makes your possible friend not end your communication with a one-word answer. (避免问“是”或“否”的问题可以让你的潜在朋友不会以一个词的答案结束你的交流。)”可知,避免提出一些“是”或“否”的问题会有助于保持对话继续进行,而不是以简短的一个词的回答结束你与对方的交流。故询问“是”或“否”的问题不利于保持谈话进行。故选B。

【答案】Dear Terry,
I’m very glad to learn that you’re going to come to China to teach Senior students Spoken English after graduation.
As for suggestions about your teaching, opinions may vary from person to person, but generally, as a foreign teacher, you’d better attach more importance to foreign culture and customs rather than language teaching so as to differ from what Chinese English teachers are doing. Meanwhile, you should adopt a proper teaching method to arouse the interest of the students. For example, you can carry out some interesting activities, such as designing some teaching games, choosing some special topics for students to participate and communicate, through which students’ speaking will surely be improved rapidly.
I hope you’ll enjoy your teaching in China and expect your coming.

So Randy asked her to come with them and help pick out Ryan’s new clothes. Randy also took Ryan to get her hair done at asalon (美发厅). Randy’s generosity became inspiration. For Ryan, that included losing her dad, grandpa, and aunt in a short period of time. “I wasn’t expecting it,” Ryan said. “I just started to cry. It really took me deeper down in my depression.”

B. Her writing was far from satisfying.
C. She had no idea what to write.

16. Which of the following can sum up the writing mentor’s suggestion to the author

If making friends is your goal as well, you need to consider taking some measures.
Be willing to take the initiative (主动). If you see someone whom you would like to know, don’t wait for her to make the first move. Get close to her and begin a conversation. Let her know in a non-aggressive (无攻击性的) way that you are interested in being friends with her.
