I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values (内卷式价值观). As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have constantly (不断地) received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A. His good grades got him a good job.
B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely (激烈地).
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his performance at school.
5. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
6. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
7. Why does the author want to major in social work at university
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged.

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts(UMass) announced recently that they have worked out how to design a biofilm (生物膜) that collects the energy in evaporation (蒸发) and changes it to electricity. This biofilm, which was announced in Nature, has the ability to change the world of wearable electronics, powering everything from personal medical sensors (感应器) to personal electronics.
“This is a very impressive technology,” says Li Xiumeng, a graduate student in electrical and computer energy, “and unlike other so-called ‘green-energy’ sources, its production is absolutely green.”
That is because this biofilm—which is a sheet of bacterial cells (细菌细胞) and as thin as a sheet of paper—is produced naturally by an improved version of the bacterium Geo. Geo is known to produce electricity and has been used before in “microbial batteries” to power electrical equipment. But such batteries require that Geo be properly cared for and fed a continuous diet. By contrast, this new biofilm, which can supply as much energy as a battery of the similar size, works continuously, because it is dead. And because it is dead, it doesn’t need to be fed.
The secret behind this new biofilm is that it makes energy from the moisture (水分) on your skin. While we daily read stories about solar power (太阳能), at least 50%of the solar energy reaching the earth goes toward evaporating water. “This is a huge, undiscovered source of energy,” says Ye Xun, professor of electrical and computer engineering at UMass, and the paper’s one senior author. Since the surface of our skin is always wet with sweat, the biofilm can make use of it and change the energy locked in evaporation into enough energy to power small equipment. “Our next step is to increase the size of our film to power more smarter wearable electronics,” says Ye, and Li points out that one of the goals is to power entire electronic systems, rather than single equipment.
8. Which can biofilm do according to Paragraph 1
A. Invent wearable electronics. B. Get power from evaporation.
C. Supply energy to microbial batteries. D. Produce more electricity than before.
9. The biofilm is better than “microbial batteries” because .
A. it is relatively thinner B. it is environmentally friendly
C. it applies a rare energy source D. it decreases the cost in usage
10. What do Ye and Li think of the future of the biofilm
A. Doubtful. B. Bright. C. Unclear. D. Harmful.
11. What is the purpose of the text
A. To introduce us to a new biofilm.
B. To describe the disadvantages of the biofilm.
C. To compare the new biofilm with others.
D. To change people’s view on the new biofilm.
D
Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests.
A study has found that people who let their minds wander easily have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and control it cleverly.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks, such as following teachers’ instructions or remembering dictated sentences. During the study, volunteers were asked to perform one simple task during which researchers kept asking if their minds were wandering. In the end, volunteers measured their working memory capacity (容量) by their ability to remember a series of letters mixed with simple maths questions.
Daniel Levinson, a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, said that those with higher working memory capacity reported “more mind wandering during these simple tasks”, but their performance did not deteriorate.
The results, published online in the journal Psychological Science, appear to make sure that the former research found working memory allows humans to deal with many thoughts at the same time.
Dr Jonathan Smallwood, of the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Science in Leipzig, Germany, said, “What this study seems to suggest is that, when the tasks aren’t very difficult, people with additional working memory capacity use them effectively to think about other things besides what they’re doing.”
Working memory capacity is also connected with general measures of intelligence, such as reading comprehension and IQ scores. Dr Smallwood added, “Our results suggest the sorts of planning that people do quite often in daily life — when they are on the bus, when they are cycling to work, when they are in the shower — are probably supported by working memory.”
12. What did the researchers ask the volunteers to do during the study
A. solve some difficult maths problems
B. retell some dictated sentences
C. follow the teacher’s instructions
D. carry out one simple task
13. What does the underlined word “deteriorate” in the fourth paragraph probably mean
A. become worse B. become better
C. improve quickly D. improve gradually
14. According to the study, working memory ________.
A. prevents people from remembering dictated sentences
B. causes people’s minds to wander more easily
C allows people to consider more things at the same time
D. leads to people’s worse performance during work
15. What’s the text mainly about
A. How the working memory works in the daily life.
B. Wandering minds might have brighter brains.
C. Why people’s minds wander while working.
D. Working ability can be improved by wandering minds.

One Friday afternoon, some of my classmates planned to take a hike in a jungle (丛林), including my friends Jake and Liam. They asked me if I would like to go with them. I love outdoor activities, so I immediately agreed.
It was sunny the following morning. I was in a very good mood. I was so excited about hiking since it was the first time that I had hiked with them. I ate a light breakfast. After that, I hurriedly ran out of my house to meet them in the school playground.
The jungle where we were going was far from our school. Its name is Salymbia Jungle. It took about three hours to go there by bus, but it wasn’t a boring journey as we were all eager to hike. After we got off the bus, we found a local guide to ensure our safety. The guide, whose name is Thomas, said that he had hiked in the Salymbia Jungle lots of times and that he was familiar with the route. When we arrived, Thomas told us never to leave the group. He warned us that we would easily get lost in the jungle if we walked alone. Then we began to hike.
There were various plants which we had never seen before. All of us were amazed at the beauty of the scenery and the sounds of the creatures. Sadly, after hiking for about an hour, I found that my watch on my wrist was gone. I realised that my watch had fallen off. It was a gift from my grandma, and I loved it very much. Without thinking, I turned back and tried to find my watch. Since I was the last one walking in the group, nobody noticed it when I walked away.
I wasn’t worried about getting lost because I thought I could find my watch easily. However, when I finally found my watch and tried to catch up with my friends, they had gone far. I immediately realised that I was alone and lost.

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. B 11. A

Children whose minds wander (走神) might have sharper brains, a research suggests.
A study has found that people who let their minds wander easily have more “working memory”, giving them the ability to hold a lot of information in their heads and control it cleverly.
Children at school need this type of memory on a daily basis for a variety of tasks such as following teachers’ instructions or remembering dictated sentences.
C. allows people to consider more things at the same time
D. leads to people’s worse performance during work

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
The sky started to become dark and I was very worried.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Fortunately, they found me with great effort.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The sky started to become dark and I was very worried. I didn’t know what to do. I called out to my friends, but there was no reply. I tried to look for a way but none of the scenes seemed familiar. I walked for a few more minutes and I got tired and hungry. I felt frightened. Finally, I gave up and took a rest. As I was falling asleep, I heard a human voice. It was unbelievable, and then I heard someone else. I screamed, “Help!”
Fortunately, they found me with great effort. My friends Jake and Liam told the guide that they found I was lost, and finally some rescuers were called to help. They led me back to the bus. Seeing me, my friends told me they were really worried. I apologized to them for leaving the group without telling them. Instead of feeling angry with me, they comforted me and helped me calm down to learn a good lesson from it. And I truly learned a good lesson from it—never leave your group members when you’re in a new place.
