Nothing could stop Dad. After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.
And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料). The smell really burned the inside of your nose. When we complained about the terrible smell, Dad said the stronger the manure, the healthier the crops, and he was right. For example, just one of his cantaloupes filled the entire house with its sweet smell, and the taste was even sweeter.
As the vegetables started coming in, Dad threw himself into cooking. One day, armed with a basket of vegetables, he announced he was going to make stew(炖菜).Dad pulled out a pressure cooker and filled it up with cabbages, eggplants, potatoes, corns, onions and carrots. For about half an hour, the pressure built and the vegetables cooked. Finally, Dad turned off the stove, the pot began to cool and the pressure relief valve sprayed out a cloud of steam. If we thought Dad's pile of chicken manure was bad, this was 10 times worse. When Dad took off the lid, the smell nearly knocked us out.
Dad carried the pot out and we opened doors and windows to air out the house. Just how bad was it The neighbors came out of their houses to see if we had a gas leak!
Determined, Dad filled our plates with steaming stew and passed them around. It didn’t look that bad, and after the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn’t offend the nose so much, either. I took a taste. It would never win a prize in a cooking competition, but it was surprisingly edible, and we drank up every last drop of soup!
4. Why did Dad clean Old Man Mocolgin’s chicken house regularly
A. To earn some money for the family. B. To collect manure for his crops.
C. To get rid of the terrible smell. D. To set a good example to us.
5. What can we infer about Dad’s stew
A. It is popular among the neighbors. B. It contains honey and vegetables.
C. It looks very wonderful. D. It tastes quite delicious.
6. What does the underlined word “offend” in the last paragraph mean
A. To attract. B. To upset. C. To air. D. To shut.
7. What can we learn about Dad form the text
A. He is an experienced cook. B. He is a troublesome father.
C. He has a positive attitude to life. D. He suffers a lot from his disability.
B 5. D 6. B 7. C

根据文章第一段的“And every week he cleaned Old Man McColgin's chicken house in exchange for manure(肥料).”(每周他都要清理Old Man McColgin's 的鸡舍,作为得到肥料的交换)可知,父亲清理Old Man McColgin's 的鸡舍是为了收集肥料。

根据划线部分所在句子“the first wave had shut down my ability to smell, it didn’t offend the nose so much, either.”
After he was put on disability for a bad back, he bought a small farm in the country, just enough to grow food for the family. He planted vegetables, fruit trees and even kept bees for honey.”(没有什么可以阻止父亲。

Marian Bechtel sits at West Palm Beach’s Bar Louie counter by herself, quietly reading her e-book as she waits for her salad. What is she reading None of your business! Lunch is Bechtel’s “me” time. And like more Americans, she’s not alone.
A new report found 46 percent of meals are eaten alone in America. More than half(53 percent) have breakfast alone and nearly half(46 percent) have lunch by themselves. Only at dinnertime are we eating together anymore, 74 percent, according to statistics from the report.
“I prefer to go out and be out. Alone, but together, you know ” Bechtel said, looking up from her book. Bechtel, who works in downtown West Palm Beach, has lunch with coworkers sometimes, but like many of us, too often works through lunch at her desk. A lunchtime escape allows her to keep a boss from tapping her on the shoulder. She returns to work feeling energized. “Today, I just wanted some time to myself,” she said.
Just two seats over, Andrew Mazoleny, a local videographer, is finishing his lunch at the bar. He likes that he can sit and check his phone in peace or chat up the barkeeper with whom he’s on a first-name basis if he wants to have a little interaction(交流). “I reflect on how my day’s gone and think about the rest of the week,” he said. “It’s a chance for self-reflection. You return to work recharged and with a plan.”
That freedom to choose is one reason more people like to eat alone. There was a time when people may have felt awkward about asking for a table for one, but those days are over. Now, we have our smartphones to keep us company at the table. “It doesn’t feel as alone as it may have before all the advances in technology,” said Laurie Demeritt, whose company provided the statistics for the report.
8. What are the statistics in paragraph 2 about
A. Food variety.
B. Eating habits.
C. Table manners.
D. Restaurant service.
9. Why does Bechtel prefer to go out for lunch
A. To meet with her coworkers.
B. To catch up with her work.
C. To have some time on her own.
D. To collect data for her report.
10. What do we know about Mazoleny
A. He makes videos for the bar.
B. He’s fond of the food at the bar.
C. He interviews customers at the bar.
D. He’s familiar with the barkeeper.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. The trend of having meals alone.
B. The importance of self-reflection.
C. The stress from working overtime.
D. The advantage of wireless technology.
B 9. C 10. D 11. A

Bacteria are an annoying problem for astronauts. The microorganisms(微生物) from our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week. How is NASA overcoming this very tiny big problem It’s turning to a bunch of high school kids. But not just any kids. It is depending on NASA HUNCH high school classrooms, like the one science teachers Gene Gordon and Donna Himmelberg lead at Fairport High School in Fairport, New York.
HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years, Gordon’s students have been studying ways to kill bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they’re close to a solution(解决方案). “We don’t give the students any breaks. They have to do it just like NASA engineers,” says Florence Gold, a project manager.
“There are no tests,” Gordon says. “There is no graded homework. There almost are no grades, other than ‘Are you working towards your goal ’ Basically, it’s ‘I’ve got to produce this product and then, at the end of year, present it to NASA.’ Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and...it’s not a very nice thing at times. It’s a hard business review of your product.”
Gordon says the HUNCH program has an impact(影响) on college admissions and practical life skills. “These kids are so absorbed in their studies that I just sit back. I don’t teach.” And that annoying bacteria Gordon says his students are emailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.
12. What do we know about the bacteria in the International Space Station
A. They are hard to get rid of. B. They lead to air pollution.
C. They appear in different forms. D. They damage the instruments.
13. What is the purpose of the HUNCH program
A. To strengthen teacher-student relationships.
B. To sharpen students’ communication skills.
C. To allow students to experience zero gravity.
D. To link space technology with school education.
14. What do the NASA engineers do for the students in the program
A. Check their product. B. Guide project designs.
C. Adjust work schedules. D. Grade their homework.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. NASA: The Home of Astronauts
B. Space: The Final Homework Frontier
C. Nature: An Outdoor Classroom
D. HUNCH: A College Admission Reform
A 13. D 14. A 15. B
Bacteria are annoying problem for astronauts. The microorganisms form our bodies grow uncontrollably on surfaces of the International Space Station, so astronauts spend hours cleaning them up each week.
HUNCH is designed to connect high school classrooms with NASA engineers. For the past two years, Gordon’s students have been studying ways to kill bacteria in zero gravity, and they think they’re close to a solution(解决方案). Gordon says his students are emailing daily with NASA engineers about the problem, readying a workable solution to test in space.
Engineers come and really do an in-person review, and...it’s not a very nice thing at times. It’s a hard business review of your product.”

A. cool down冷却下来;B. keep off与……
A. returned返回;B. learned学会;C. failed失败;D. continued继续。

On the last day of our week-long stay, we ___44___(invite) to attend a private concert on a beautiful farm on the North Shore under the stars, ____45____(listen) to musicians and meeting interesting locals.
36. so 37. to get
38. of 39. who
40. recommended
41. competition
42. traditional
43. hugely 44. were invited
45. listening
“so...that...” 故填so。
本句运用了take...to do sth.,意为“花费……做某事”,故此处应填to get。
【38题详解】
考查介词。“a pack of”意为“一群……”。故填of。
先行词为masters(主人),且从句缺主语。
由“on the last day of our week-long stay”可知,句子时态为一般过去时,用被动语态。主语为we,故填were invited。

Christmas Day was coming. I was just a kid then, and my big sister told me there was no Santa Claus. I fled to my Grandma because she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told me the truth. Grandma was home, and I told her everything. “No Santa Claus ” She shouted. “Ridiculous! Don’t believe it. “Now, put on your coat, and let’s go.”
“Go where, Grandma ” I asked. “Where” turned out to be Kerby’s General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. “Take this money, and buy something for someone who needs it. I’ll wait for you in the car.” Then she turned and walked out of Kerby’s.
I was only eight years old. I’d often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people competing to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, holding that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy and who to buy it for. I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker, who was a kid with bad breath and messy hair. He sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock’s grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn’t have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for break during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn’t have a cough, and he didn’t have a coat. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I chose a red one, which looked really warm, and he would like that.
“Is this a Christmas present for someone ” the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid ten dollars down. “Yes.”
The nice lady smiled at me, put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap (包裹) the coat in Christmas paper.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap (包裹) the coat in Christmas paper. She wrote “To Bobby, from Santa Claus” on it, after which she drove me over to Bobby’s house, explaining I was officially one of the Santa’s helpers. Grandma parked down the street from Bobby’s house, and I took a deep breath, dashing for his front door. Seeing no other people notice us, I put the Christmas present down, pounded on his doorbell and then I hid in the car with my grandma.
Paragraph2:
Grandma and I waited breathlessly for Bobby Decker’s front door to open. Finally, it opened. Out went Bobby Decker. Seeing the coat in the bag, he glanced around and looked quite astonished. Seconds later, he called his mother to go out for a check. Hearing them say “Thanks” to Santa Clause, I felt very proud of what I had done. At that moment, I even made up my mind to be Santa’s helper forever. It was on that night that I realized the truth that a person who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas present under the tree.

A. He makes videos for the bar.
B. He’s fond of the food at the bar.
C. He interviews customers at the bar.

11. What is the text mainly about
A. The trend of having meals alone.
B. The importance of self-reflection.
C. The stress from working overtime.
D. The advantage of wireless technology.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
