When I was younger, I had been a top student with a strong desire to attend a top university. But things started to go downhill for me in high school after my parents divorced. Torn between wanting to be with my mother, who moved to Canada alone with no support, and with my beloved aging grandfather in Pakistan, I moved back and forth, struggling with my studies. I barely graduated from high school and entered an ordinary college, feeling that I had already failed.
I got discouraged, and began to suffer from severe depression. The death of my grandfather was the final straw. With no real hope for the future, I dropped out and returned to my mother and sisters in Canada.
Then I was riding with a trucking company to help support my mother and sisters. During those long hours on the road, my grandfather’s last words came back to me: “Please accept the challenges of life and work harder. It is now or never. I hope you will never disappoint us.” With his words ringing in my ears, I discovered a newfound resolve. My path suddenly became clear: I had to finish what I had started and go back to school.
To get back on track, I needed to take a full course load while continuing to work enough part-time hours to help pay the bills. After graduating from high school again, I began university engineering cooperation program, in which I worked as a paid intern (实习生) every other term, allowing me to keep my student loans in check. At the same time, I tried my best to focus on my studies. After completing my university, I went on to a master’s and now a PhD, wining several research awards along the way.
My path to this point has made one thing clear: Never fear failure. I hope I have made my grandfather proud.

Starting this fall, primary and middle school students in China will have at least one weekly course on labor education, according to a new curriculum standard released by the Ministry of Education (MOE).
Labor education ranges from household chores to on-campus labor and community volunteer services, generally 3 types according to the new standards: the first refers to everyday chores, including cleaning, organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances (家电); next is productive labor, including agriculture, making traditional handicrafts (手工艺品), and applying new technologies such as 3D printing; the third type is service work, including volunteer work. The new curriculum also calls for a week of extra-curricular and off-campus activities designed for labor education once every school year.
A recent study showed that primary and middle school students in China only spend an average of 12 minutes a day on chores, compared to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France. Many countries start students’ labor education at a young age. Finland begins to develop students’ life skills in primary school. Spinning, woodworking, cooking and other craftsmanship classes are offered. In Germany, pupils have two labor classes per week. Electronics, office technology, sewing, housekeeping, and career guidance are all taught there.
Adding labor education was out of concern that the country’s youngsters do too little housework and look down on manual labor (体力劳动) jobs. Due to great academic pressure, schools tend to put their academic curricula on the top, and parents sometimes see household chores as distractions. But, according to the MOE, labor education must be strengthened to help students develop social values, an interest in labor and finally an all-around development.
8. What is the purpose of adding labor education

A. They start labor education in the middle school.
B. There are a wide variety of labor education courses.
C. It is viewed more important than academic learning.
D. Students spend more than 30 minutes on housework daily.
11. What do we know about labor education in China
A. A week of extracurricular activities is a must every term.
B. Students decide whether to take the courses on their own.
C. Specially-designed courses have been applied for many years.
D. The school has to recognize the importance of labor education.

Imagine a warm spring day 66 million years ago. These could have been the very last moments of the dinosaur era when a city-sized asteroid struck Earth, killing off three quarters of all species on the planet. According to a study published in Nature on Feb 23,the asteroid hit in springtime.
Scientists have long been confused over the time of year the asteroid hit, and how some animals managed to survive while dinosaurs didn’t, according to USA Today.
Researchers in 20l9 discovered fossilized fishes in North Dakota that died shortly after the asteroid hit Earth. They examined the fossils with a particle accelerator and found out there was seasonal growth on the bone. All fish bone cell densities and volumes can indicate the season. Because the accelerator also could capture the sizes, researchers were able to determine when in the year the asteroid hit, Dennis Voeten told USA Today.
“I think spring puts a large group of the late Cretaceous biota in a very unprotected spot because they were out and about looking for food, tending to offspring after the winter,” Melanie During, the main author of the study.
In the Southern Hemisphere, it was autumn. Therefore, life in the Southern Hemisphere was a lot more prepared for this event.
It is unclear whether small animals in the Northern Hemisphere actually did worse than those in the south. There is evidence that Northern Hemisphere turtles were wiped out in the asteroid strike, after which their habitats were later repopulated by turtles from the south, Voeten told The Guardian.
Nothing much larger than a house cat survived the asteroid impact and many species would have been killed whenever it hit, Daniel Field, a professor at the University of Cambridge, told The Guardian.
12. Which probably helps find the time of year the asteroid hit
A. The types of fossilized fishes. B. The location of fossilized fishes.
C. The number of fish fossils in the area. D. The volume and density of the fish bone cells.
13. What causes the species’ extinction when the asteroid hit in Melanie During’s opinion
A. The season of the hit. B. The size of asteroid.
C The group size of species. D. The body shape of animals.
14. Which would Daniel Field most probably agree with
A. Chances of survival depended on it where the species lived at the time.
B. Many species could have survived the asteroid strike but for the season.
C. Many species had little chance to survive even if it was a different season.
D. Animals from the Southern Hemisphere were less affected by asteroid strikes.
15 What can be the best title for the text
A. The Science behind the Asteroid B. Occurrence of the Natural Disaster
C. The Effect of Dinosaurs’ Extinction D. New Research on the Asteroid Strike
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. D
【解析】

Because the accelerator also could capture the sizes, researchers were able to determine when in the year the asteroid hit, Dennis Voeten told USA Today.(所有鱼骨细胞的密度和体积都可以指示季节。
根据第四段““I think spring puts a large group of the late Cretaceous biota in a very unprotected spot because they were out and about looking for food, tending to offspring after the winter,” Melanie During, the main author of the study.(“我认为春天把一大批晚白垩纪生物群置于一个非常不受保护的地方,因为它们出去寻找食物,在冬天之后照顾后代,”该研究的主要作者Melanie During说)”可知,小行星撞击地球导致物种灭绝的原因是撞击的季节。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Nothing much larger than a house cat survived the asteroid impact and many species would have been killed whenever it hit, Daniel Field, a professor at the University of Cambridge, told The Guardian.(剑桥大学教授Daniel Field在接受《卫报》采访时表示,没有比家猫大得多的动物在小行星撞击中幸存下来,很多物种都可能在每次撞击中死亡)”可推知,Daniel Field 最有可能同意C选项“即使是不同的季节,许多物种也很少有机会生存”的观点。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Imagine a warm spring day 66 million years ago. These could have been the very last moments of the dinosaur era when a city-sized asteroid struck Earth, killing off three quarters of all species on the planet. The Person I Admire Most
Dear fellow students,
There are many respectable people around us. And the person I admire most is Mrs Wu, aged 30, my English teacher, who has been teaching English for 6 years.
Mrs Wu is kind and considerate towards us students just like our dear mother. Once, one of my classmates got injured accidentally and without hesitation Mrs Wu took him to hospital for medical treatment at once. What impresses me most is that she always tries new ways to make her classes lively and interesting. Also, she is very patient with us and always helps us find solutions to problems when we turn to her for help. With her help, our English has made rapid progress.
In my eyes, Mrs Wu is more than our teacher. She’s also our best friend. That’s why she deserves our respect.

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
I grew up in a poor family with a single mom addicted to drugs (吸毒上瘾). Often there was no money for food, and I was always hungry.
On my eighth birthday, some close family members were invited to go to a park to celebrate my birthday. No cake. No presents. Except for my aunt, she had an envelope in her hand.
Before everyone sang Happy Birthday, I saw a little boy, probably my age, and a woman, perhaps his mother, digging in the park dustbin (垃圾箱) for food. Both the mother and the son were in rags (衣衫褴褛) with their clothes dirty enough not to tell the color of the clothes.
The sight of them filled me with sympathy. I begged my mom to invite them to my party but my mother was not a fan of strangers. She said no.
I was attracted by them. I didn’t know others struggled like me, and it hurt my heart. I watched them as everyone sang. I watched them as my aunt handed me the envelope. I watched them as I opened it until I saw the content, a new 100-dollar bill. My mother was angry be-cause my aunt gave me such a large amount of money. Maybe she thought my aunt trusted me more than her with cash.
We were poor and lived a hard life. But I had never dug in a dustbin for food. Again, I couldn’t help watching the mother and the son searching for food.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答案卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
I was watching them when I remembered my previous (以前的) life. Once I had a happy family with more than enough to eat and wear.

Paragraph 2:
My memories of the past were interrupted by my aunt’s voice. My aunt kept talking over my mother, telling me that I could do ANYTHING I wanted with that money. So I did.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I was watching them when I remembered my previous (以前的) life. Once I had a happy family with more than enough to eat and wear. My father was a train driver, who could earn enough to support my family, with my mother nursing me at home. Each time my father returned home, he used to wave his arms and hugged me, kissing and tickling (咯吱) me. After dinner, he carried me on his shoulders for a walk with my mother. But unfortunately, one day he felt sick and was diagnosed (诊断) with a serious disease, causing his death. My father’s death was a big blow to me and my mother. Worse still, my mother developed the bad habit of taking drugs to get rid of sadness, which caused our life to become more and more difficult. Without my aunt’s help and support, I didn’t know what my life would be like.
My memories of the past were interrupted by aunt’s voice. My aunt kept talking over my mother, telling me that I could do ANYTHING I wanted with that money. So I did. I walked to the boy and his mother. I opened my mouth, saying, “Today is my birthday. My only present is 100 dollars. I’d like to give it to you. You can buy whatever you need most.” With these words, I handed the money to the boy. There were so many tears and thanks. My aunt and I understood how powerful it was to give the only present to others who needed the present more than I did. Now I didn’t have a present, but I was happy, for it was my most unforgettable birthday.

A. To enrich the students’ off-campus life.
B. To improve the students’ performance on learning.
C. To help students achieve an all-around development.
D. To follow the education mode of some western countries.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The history of labor education.
B. The content of labor education.
C. The significance of labor education.
D. The future development of labor education.
10 What does labor education in Finland and Germany have in common

C. The group size of species. D. The body shape of animals.
14. Which would Daniel Field most probably agree with
A. Chances of survival depended on it where the species lived at the time.

Paragraph 2:
My memories of the past were interrupted by my aunt’s voice. My aunt kept talking over my mother, telling me that I could do ANYTHING I wanted with that money. So I did.
