A
What will our world really be like 20 years from now What does the future hold for the food we eat, the technology we use and the homes we live in It would be beyond imagination--food pills, flying cars and bases on the moon--but the reality will probably be less exciting. The world in 2040 will probably be much like it is today, but smarter.
The future of food
The next major food change will be vertical farming (垂直农业) in which we grow food in AI-controlled vertical buildings rather than horizontal land. We could be eating insects in 2040. Insects are rich in proteins, low in fat and a good source of calcium.
The future of love
The Internet has forever changed the way people meet and fall in love. Online dating and location-based services have opened up possibilities that allow people to look beyond their friends, friends of friends, and co-workers.
The future of technology
We’re heading into a future where improved battery technology will make better electric cars, personal flying machines, and private space tourism possible.
The future of work
Rather than humans working with machines, robots are likely to reduce some jobs. Taxi drivers will be replaced by self-driving cars, for example. Clearly, there will also be new jobs created: the computer engineer, mechanics who fix the self-driving taxis, programmers, space tour guides and vertical farmers. Technology will continue to disturb businesses and get rid of some jobs, creating new professions we can’t yet imagine.
The future of health
Hospitals are the costliest part in the health system, Prevention will become the center of attention as we gain greater control of our health information.
1. What is the food in 2040 like
A. People will not eat pork or beef then.
B. Insects will become the main food then.
C. The food will mainly exist in the form of pills.
D. Part of the food will come from vertical farming.
2. What can we learn from Paragraph 5
A. New professions will appear. B. Boring jobs will be abandoned.
C. Most jobs will be done by robots. D. Humans will work with machines.
3. What will be the focus of health in the future

Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine (缝纫机). Technically, it’s embroidering (绣), not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor (裁缝) and he became one too, but he didn’t let the artist in him die. He started “painting” with a needle and thread, but instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool — the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It’s easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
“You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched (缝合) the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it,” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look.”
Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4X2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh which took the artist over a year to finish, Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.
4. Why do Arun’s paintings leave a deep impression on people
A. They have rich contents. B. They take many years to finish.
C. They give people a sense of satisfaction. D. They are finished with a sewing machine.
5. What made Arun give up his former plans
A. His father’s sudden death. B. His father’s serious illness.
C. His love for sewing machines. D. His position in his family business.
6. What should Arun do when he paints
A. Keep stitching the cloth without disturbance.
B. Stitch the cloth again when making a mistake.
C. Be very careful to make sure paintings look neat.
D. Make sure the cloth he uses is very strong.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Arun’s Wonderful Life Journey. B. Arun’s Most Impressive Works
C. Constant Effort Needed to Succeed D. The World’s Only Sewing Machine Painter
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. D

【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段““You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched (缝合) the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it,” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look.”(“你需要非常小心,因为一旦你缝好了,你就没有办法修复它了。”Arun说,“这一切都是在一个单层中完成的,让这幅画看起来很整洁。”)”可知,Arun 说到因为不能返工,因此缝布料的时候需要非常小心,而且不能缝得太多,只能缝单独的一层来确保画看起来整洁,由此可知,Arun在绘制的时候应该是非常小心确保绘画看起来整洁。故选C项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据首段中的“Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine(缝纫机). Technically, it’s embroidering (绣), not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes.(Arun Kumar Bajaj有一项非常不寻常的技能——他可以用缝纫机画画(缝纫)。

The little bird perched (栖息) itself on the tree branch outside Vanessa’s bedroom window. It sang an energetic song as the first pale yellow rays of sunshine emerged from the horizon.
“Oh, what is that noise ” Vanessa complained to herself, pulling her bed sheet over her head in an attempt to block the sound from outside. It was no use, and she knew it because the loud birdsong signalled the coming of the day. A few moments later, Vanessa’s mom knocked on her door, and then came in with a smile. “Time to get up, Sleepyhead,” she whispered. “The early bird catches the worm, you know.”
“Ugh, what does that even mean ” asked Vanessa, with a pillow covering her face. “It’s just an expression, honey,” her mom replied. She gave Vanessa a kiss on the cheek and urged her to get out of bed. Vanessa rolled over and slept for a few more minutes.
Vanessa walked slowly downstairs, had breakfast slowly and missed her bus. When she finally got to school, she had to get a late pass. She missed the first part of math class, so she didn’t understand the lesson and had to get extra help. Her teacher gave her extra homework to make sure she knew it. This day was no fun.
The next morning, Vanessa was woken up by the same birdsong. Instead of ignoring it, Vanessa walked over to the window and opened the curtains. Soft light filled the room. “Well, hello there, little fellow,” she said when she saw the pretty bird outside, still singing happily. Suddenly, the bird flew down to land on the fresh grass. As she watched, the bird picked up a worm for breakfast. Vanessa seemed to instantly understand what her mother meant when she said “the early bird catches the worm”.

【答案】One possible version:
She raced through breakfast and caught the bus. She was one of the first kids to enter her classroom. Her teacher reminded her that there were only a few spots left in the Robotics Club, and if she was interested, she needed to sign up right away. Vanessa was very interested! She wrote her name down in one of the last spaces happily and smiled to herself.
At lunchtime, Vanessa finished her lunch early and had time to go to the library. The librarian was stacking some new books that had just arrived. One of them was the sequel to a great story Vanessa had just finished. She was the first one to check it out! Later, when the gym teacher asked for volunteers, Vanessa put her hand up immediately and was chosen to be the captain of the softball team. “Wow, it sounds like you had a great day, Vanessa,” her mom said later when Vanessa told her all about it at dinnertime. “Yes. Just call me the early bird,” said Vanessa, with a satisfied smile.

Chinese Culture Shown to the World with Love Li Ziqi, a short video blogger specializing in traditional Chinese cooking and handicrafts has gained worldwide popularity.
Li has about 20 million followers on Sina Weibo, China's equivalent to Twitter, plus 7 million followers on overseas social media networks. Many foreigners say they have got to know traditional Chinese food culture via her channel.
It is the spirit of craftsmanship(技艺) behind her works that makes Li's video clips attractive. She strictly follows the authentic traditional steps and procedures in making traditional Chinese food and handicrafts, such as peach flower wine and silk, and goes to great lengths to ensure her videos are accurate. Sometimes she spends several months producing one of her videos.
Li has been inheriting(继承) traditional Chinese culture in a rather creative way. A closer look at her videos will show that they are never with any "analysis" that makes people feel bored. They just show the audience each and every detail of traditional Chinese culture so that the latter knows how Chinese live their beautiful and elegant lives. It is that universal appeal that makes her works so attractive. Thanks to Li's efforts, many intangible cultural heritages that only existed in memories and written records now appear before our eyes. Via her short videos, Li presents the image of a beautiful and friendly China.
