In 2014, Xu Yitang, a Beijing native who had been studying Peking Opera since childhood, went with friends for a birthday celebration to Beijing Zoo. Little did he know that a chance encounter at the aquarium there would excite a lifelong passion. As Xu Yitang stared at corals bathed in tank’s light, a sense of wonder crowded into his mind. Lost in the beauty and mystery of the creatures, he spent the entire afternoon in front of it. After that, he began to frequent the local market to learn about coral farming from merchants who sell ornamental plants, fish and corals. He also searched for information on relevant forums online. Before long, he had set up a small fish tank at home and started cultivating a coral.
Nowadays, Xu Yitang who has moved to the tropical island of South China’s Hainan province, works for a Sanya-based tropical biological laboratory belonging to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Each day, he spends several hours diving deep under the waves to observe and document the growth and development of the creatures that captured his heart all those years ago. Nicknamed “coral man”, he is actively engaged on such social media platforms as Sina Weibo, where he regularly shares visually beautiful photos and entertaining videos of corals. He aims to encourage individuals to take action in protecting coral reefs and the oceans as a whole from the destructive impact of climate change and human activities.
Unfortunately, with the strengthening of the greenhouse effect, rising sea temperatures have led to coral bleaching (白化) and decay. A coral reef’s beautiful colors come from the symbiotic algae (共生藻类) zooxanthellae that provide more than 90 percent of the energy through photosynthesis (光合作用). Coral bleaching occurs when coral expels the algae and dies due to the lack of nutrients.
In the laboratory, he would film educational videos to raise awareness and knowledge about corals, so that people can learn how to protect them effectively.

Giant stars may be the ultimate example of “Live fast; die young”. Unlike our own sun, which will shine for billions of years, more huge stars can burn through their fuel in only a few million years before dropping off their outer parts and exploding.
This week NASA published a rare image from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) of one such giant—a Wolf-Rayet star in the final stages of its life. Named WR 124, it’s found in Sagitta and lies about 15, 000 light-years away from Earth. The dying star is at least 30times the mass of our sun but is contracting itself quickly as it sends off hot gas into the cold space.
“We’ve caught it early, ” explains Anthony Moffat, a retired astrophysicist, who previously observed WR 124 using the Hubble Space Telescope and was not involved in the recent JWST measurements. Moffat has studied Wolf-Rayet stars for decades. “This is the youngest one I know of, ” he says. The colorful cloud in the image is only a few thousand years old. “Now the nebula is hugging the star, ” he says. But as time flies by, it will bloom outward in expanding shells or rings of gas and dust.
Astrophysicists created the grand image by combining data from two of JWST’s instruments, the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) and the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI). The Hubble Space Telescope, which mostly gathers light at optical (视觉) wavelengths, had captured images of WR 124 before, but JWST’s observations show the star’s disappearance in detail.
“Personally, the most exciting part of this image is that we are capturing a rare event—that is, a Wolf-Rayet star—with a level of detail that can only be achieved with JWST. ” says Macarena Garcia Marin, an astrophysicist at the European Space Agency, who works with MIRL
8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A. To lead in the topic of the text. B. To present a common problem.
C. To make the article interesting. D. To introduce a theory.
9. What can we know about WR 124 according to NASA
A. It is 10, 000 light-years away from Earth. B. It takes in cold gas from the space.
C. It is 30 times the size of the Earth. D. It is in the last period of its life.
10. What is Marin’s attitude toward the image
A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Satisfied. D. Critical.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Stars actually will explode rapidly. B. Giant stars will shine for billions of years.
C. NASA has a great effect on studying stars. D. Rare dying star was revealed in new JWST image.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. D

“In a close cooperation between several first-class chemists, physicists, and biologists, we have developed a very efficient water filter (净水器). It does not need any energy source but sunlight,” said Forró. “Thus our device can supply clean drinking water even at remote places.” The small, adaptable flat-bodied device was designed at Switzerland’s EPFL research institute, by a team led by Prof. Laszl6 Forró.
Water enters via a tube (管子) in the top, flows through a multilayer composite (复合的) material sandwiched between two sheets of glass, and exits through a tube in the bottom. The composite material is made up of titanium dioxide nanowires (TDN,二氧化钛纳米线) interwoven with carbon nanotubes. When the filter is exposed to sunlight, the UV light (紫外线) causes the composite to produce a group of molecules (分子) known as reactive oxygen species. These molecules are highly effective at killing harmful bacteria and viruses. Its potential challenge when working outdoors is rainy or cloudy days.
The filter has already been successfully tested on water containing E. coli bacteria, with results indicating that it should also have no problem ridding of other harmful bacteria. In fact, it is believed that the technology may also prove effective at ridding of micro-pollutants such as pesticides (杀虫剂) and drug remains. It should be noted that when activated by UV light, titanium dioxide nanowires on their own are capable of killing harmful viruses and bacteria. For that matter, even UV light alone can purify water, if the water is left sitting in the sunlight in a transparent container.
However, Prof. Forró told us that his team’s filter is much more effective — this is due in part to the carbon nanotubes’ ability to absorb heat from the sunlight, making the purification process faster. The present small-scale model can treat 2 liters (0.5 gal) of water per day, although that figure would rise considerably if the technology were to be scaled up.
12 Why can the new filter work at remote areas
A. It is small and flat-shaped.
B. It can be powered by sunlight.
C. It’s designed by famous scientists.
D. It can be efficient in cleaning water.
13. Which aspects of filter does paragraph 2 mainly focus on
A. Appearance and possible effects.
B. Working conditions.
C. Structure and working process.
D. Strengths and weaknesses.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. The filter can kill all kinds of bacteria of the water.
B. The filter is able to get rid of a lot of drugs in the water.
C. TDN can kill viruses without being activated by UV light.
D. UV light is able to purify the water in transparent containers.
15. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage
A. To state a new function of UV light.
B. To introduce a solar-driven water filter.
C. To inform the discovery of a new material.
D. To stress the effectiveness of a water filter.
【答案】12 B 13. C 14. D 15. B

Grandma Goodie, warm-hearted and caring, goes to see her granddaughters every Sunday afternoon. Every visit starts with the same steps. First, she rings the doorbell. Then Vera and Gina run to open the door excitedly. Every time, Grandma Goodie brings wonderful gifts. Sometimes they are toys. Sometimes they are candies. After receiving the gifts, the whole room is full of the laughter and screams of the two.
One Sunday, Grandma rang the doorbell. Vera and Gina, who had been waiting since lunch, hurried down the stairs to open the door. “Darling, look what I have brought to you,” Grandma said. She pulled out a pack of cards and they couldn’t wait to rush into their room and began to play the cards cheerfully. They enjoyed themselves so much that the whole afternoon had passed before they realized it.
At the end of the day, Grandma kissed everyone and said her goodbyes. As she drove away, Vera and Gina heard their parents say that they would hold a birthday party for Grandma next Sunday. “Grandma has a birthday ” they thought, looking at each other in surprise. Both felt a little confused, “Grown-ups have birthdays ”
“We have to get her a present,” Gina decided. “But what ” asked Vera, “Grandma Goodie undoubtedly has everything!’’
They spent all week thinking, but nothing came into their mind.
On Sunday afternoon, the doorbell rang. Just as what usually happened, Grandma Goodie brought them beloved amazing gifts, which were some candies with good-looking covers. They extended their sincere gratitude to Grandma Goodie and quickly went back to their room to think about the gift for Grandma.
All through the dinner, the kids were silent. “What’s wrong with you What makes you two so down and quiet ” asked Grandma.
“Grandma, we really wanted to give you something special for your birthday,” Gina said. “But nothing we thought of would do,” added Vera. Grandma Goodie smiled and held the kids in her arms. Then she said, “Oh, kids, don’t you know you two are the best gifts I could ever ask for ”

Here is the gift for you.” Meanwhile, Vera showed Grandma the picture drawn by Gina and decorated by herself, two hands holding over her head. “Grandma, your best gift is here!
4. What changed Xu Yitang’s career choice
A. Frequenting the local market.
B. Setting up a small fish tank at home.
C. Having an encounter at the aquarium.
D. Observing coral growth and development.
5. What can we infer from paragraph 2

C. Xu spends few hours on his work every day.
D. Xu shares his videos for corals through social media platforms.
6. What caused coral bleaching
A Rising sea temperatures. B. Lots of nutrients in the water.
C. Coral farming practices. D. Lack of sunlight in deep waters.
7. How does he feel about his job now
A. Critical. B. Indifferent. C. Objective. D. Enthusiastic.

The Hubble Space Telescope, which mostly gathers light at optical (视觉的) wavelengths, had captured images of WR 124 before, but JWST’s observations show the star’s disappearance in detail.
“Personally the most exciting part of this image is that we are capturing a rare event—that is, a Wolf-Rayet star—with a level of detail that can only be achieved with JWST.

12. Why can the new filter work at remote areas
