While temperatures continue to climb, visitors are still coming to see Death Valley National Park on the California-Nevada border. The park is known as the hottest place on Earth. This past weekend, the temperatures climbed to 53.33℃. Most visitors at this time of year make it only a short distance to any area in the park before returning to the cool air in their vehicles.
Early information from the park service shows that across the nation’s 424 national parks, at least four people have died this year from heat-related causes. That includes a 65-year-old man from San Diego who was found dead at Death Valley earlier this month.
Death Valley National Park suggests visitors be careful and not have expectations of rescue. While park rangers (护林员) drive on park roads and can aid tourists in need, it is unsure that lost visitors will get help in time.
Physical activity can make the heat feel even worse and leave people exhausted. Alessia Dempster, who was visiting from Edinburgh, Scotland, said, “It’s very hot especially when there’s a gentle wind. You would think maybe that would give you some slight relief from the heat, but it just really does feel like an air blow dryer just going back in your face.”
Death Valley is a narrow area that is below sea level and surrounded by high mountains, the park service’s website says. The dry air and small plant coverage let sunlight heat up the park surface. The heat then becomes trapped in the valley.
Still, several areas in Death Valley continue to draw tourists. Badwater Basin, made up of salt flats, is considered the lowest point in all of North America. The 183-meter Ubehebe Crater dates back over 2,000 years. And Zabriskie Point is a great sunrise viewing spot.
Josh Miller, a visitor from Indianapolis who has been to 20 national parks so far, shared that feeling. “It’s hot, but the scenery is awesome,” he said.
8. What do most visitors do in Death Valley
A. Cool themselves in time. B. Do lots of physical exercises.
C. Stay away from park rangers. D. Carry dryers with themselves.
9. Why does the author mention the 65-year-old man in paragraph 2
A. To encourage the elderly to travel more.
B. To express admiration for mountain climbers.
C. To advise people to tour Death Valley more often.
D. To show the danger of traveling in Death Valley.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about Death Valley
A. Its covering area. B. Its attractive spots.
C. The reason why it is so hot. D. The service of its park’s website.
11. What can be inferred about Death Valley from the last two paragraphs
A. It has a short history. B. It is worth visiting.
C. It draws fewer and fewer tourists. D. It is unsuitable for viewing sunrise.

Austrian-based food-tech startup Revo Foods announced this week that its 3D-printed vegan fish filet (素食鱼片) was heading to European grocery store shelves — a first for 3D-printed food. According to the company’s September 12 press release, the arrival of the “Filet” represents a key moment in sustainable food, with 3D-printed consumables ready for industrial mass production. Revo Foods Filet is likely to be just the first of many other such 3D-printed edible (可食用的) products to soon hit the market.
“Despite dramatic losses of coral reefs and increasing levels of poisons and micro plastic polluting fish, consumer demand for seafood has skyrocketed in recent decades,” the company announcement explains, “One promising solution to provide consumers with sustainable alternatives that do not contribute to overfishing is vegan seafood. The key to the success of these products lies in recreating a real taste that appeals to consumers.”
The composition of the Filet provides a meat-like texture (口感). 12 ingredients (成分) compose Revo’s Filet, such as pea proteins, plant oils and algae extracts. With its high protein and Ornega-3 contents, eating a Revo Filet is still very much like eating regular salmon. And thanks to its plant-based ingredients, the Filet has a three week shelf life, a significant improvement over regular salmon products.
“With the milestone of industrial-scale 3D food printing, we are entering a creative food revolution, an era where food is being made exactly according to the customers’ needs,” Revo Foods CEO Robin Simsa said via this week’s announcement.
While Revo’s products are currently only available for European markets, the company says it is actively working to expand its availability across the globe, with Simsa telling PopSci the company hopes to enter US markets around 2025.
12. What can we infer from the second paragraph
A. Revo’s Filet will be eco-friendly. B. Revo Foods is popular in Europe.
C. Edible fish have decreased sharply. D. Most people refuse to accept seafood.
13. What is special about Revo’s Filet
A. It is a kind of seafood. B. It has a longer shelf life.
C. It has the same taste as salmon. D. It has no food quality problems.
14. What is Simsa’s attitude to the future of 3D-printed food
A. Doubtful. B. Disappointed. C. Optimistic. D. Worried.
15. What is the text
A. A short story. B. A research paper.
C. An advertisement. D. A news report.

About a month ago, my husband and I found kindness in an unlikely place: standing in line at a Subway sandwich shop to pick up a quick dinner.
It was extremely busy on this particular night, and I noticed a dad behind us with his little girl, who looked to be around four. The man seemed as tired as my husband, but the little girl was cheerful and excited as she waited for her sandwich and cookie.
I watched as the man behind us got closer to the front of the line. He started to look worried. Right before we checked out, I heard the man say to the woman who had made his sandwiches that he was sorry to just leave his out because he didn’t have enough money to pay for them all. He looked very embarrassed. His little girl continued jumping around excitedly.
I quietly asked the cashier to add the man’s whole order to ours. I paid the $ 87.73, and we got out of there before the man behind us knew what had happened.
Like many others since COVID-19 hit, our family of five was living on one income. I was holding our debit card (借记卡) and knew that we only had $ 90.16 in our account. That was all we would have until payday three days later. But still, it felt great to be able to help that family, even though we would be out of money for a few days.
What happened next was amazing. My husband went back to that Subway the next week to pick up five sandwiches that I thought would cost $ 44.58. There was $ 47 in our account.
But it turned out that the dinner cost more than we had on the card. My husband told them to put his sandwich back because he couldn’t afford it. Then he paid for the four sandwiches and headed to our car.

【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. B

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. D

【13题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中“And thanks to its plant-based ingredients, the Filet has a three week shelf life, a significant improvement over regular salmon products. (由于其植物性成分,Filet保质期为三周,比普通三文鱼产品有了显著改善)”可知,由于其植物成分,素食鱼片拥有三周的保质期,比普通三文鱼产品的保质期更长。故选B项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。由倒数第二段中Simsa说的话“With the milestone of industrial-scale 3D food printing, we are entering a creative food revolution, an era where food is being made exactly according to the customers’ needs (随着工业规模3D食品打印的里程碑,我们正在进入一场创意食品革命,一个完全根据客户需求生产食品的时代)”和最后一段中“with Simsa telling PopSci the company hopes to enter US markets around 2025. (Simsa告诉PopSci,该公司希望在2025年左右进入美国市场)”可知,Simsa认为他们正在进入一场创意食品革命、完全根据客户需求生产食品的时代,以后公司在2025年左右还会进军美国市场,可得出他对公司的3D打印素食鱼片的未来是乐观的。故选C项。
【15题详解】

第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

As he opened the door, one of the female workers ran to him.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The two men nodded at one another and went on their way.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
As he opened the door, one of the female workers ran to him. When he was confusedly wondering what she was for, the worker handed him his sandwich. Without a word, she ran back into the store. With a grateful heart, he assumed that the lady had just given it to him. About two minutes later, he was getting ready to leave when he saw the same man and little girl from a week earlier. At that moment, my husband knew what had happened.
The two men nodded at one another and went on their way. Although they didn’t say a word to each other, gratitude took roots in their hearts. They made sure for the second time that they both left the store with dinner for their families. My husband told me what had happened on arriving home. I was touched and lost in thought. In a world where distance means safety, it’s refreshing and soul-lifting when someone does something kind for you, even if it’s only at a local Subway.
