"Everything happens for the best," my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. "If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment."
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭便车)to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station-and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person. "Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that'll give you a chance," she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. "Everything happens for the best," Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over(沸溢,发怒). I asked aloud, "How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station " I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, "What was that you said about sports Do you know anything about football " Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday’s game!
On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: "If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment".

The European Patent Office (EPO) on 4th July 2023 announced that Maasai inventor, Richard Turere, won first place in the Young Inventor Prize at the European Inventor Award 2023.
Turere invented the Lion Lights system at age 11. As a young Maasai boy, Turere was entrusted with the vital responsibility of protecting his family’s cattle from predators (捕食者). He recognised the need for a solution to prevent lions and other predators from attacking livestock (牲畜), which led him to develop the innovative light system that has since gained global recognition.
Lion population in Africa is estimated to have declined by 43% in the past 20 years. Many lions are killed to stop them from eating precious livestock, significantly impacting the lion population, the area’s biodiversity and tourism. Known as Lion Lights, Turere’s invention is based on a simple concept: visually reproducing the human presence that keeps lions away. With changing sequences (序列) of flashing lights which are fixed on fences, the lions cannot become comfortable with the patterns and are discouraged from hunting livestock.
As word of Turere’s technology and its success spread, other community members began requesting the system for their properties, and now over 2,000 homes in Kenya use Lion Lights. The system typically runs on solar energy but can also be coupled with wind power when the weather is cloudy or there is little sun.
In 2013, Turere founded the Lion Lights organization, which now cooperates with more than 50 young people in his native village. Turere’s commitment and resourcefulness have attracted international attention. His invention has been adopted in several other countries. “I want this story to inspire the young kids so that they too can do something.
8. What motivates Turere to invent Lion Lights
A. To win an award. B. To protect livestock.
C. To maintain lion population. D. To shoulder family responsibility.
9. How does the Lion Lights system work
A. It controls electric fences to trap lions.
B. It operates on a single energy source.
C. It patterns the human existence using lights.
D. It uses strong flashing lights to scare lions away.
10. Which of the following best describes Turere
A. Creative and devoted. B. Intelligent and modest.
C. Brave and disciplined. D. Ambitious and outgoing.
11. In which column can the text be found in a newspaper
A. Profiles. B. Entertainment. C. Health. D. Adventure.

Far below every town and city lies an invisible network of pipes crucial to the lives of their residents. Once water disappears down a pipe or toilet, it’s out of sight, out of mind. The water flows into containers that carry rainwater, wastewater and solid waste away. There are three main types of sewers (下水道): sanitary sewers, storm sewers and combined sewers. Among them, sanitary sewers function as a city’s veins (静脉). Water containing human and industrial waste is collected in sanitary sewers and carried to wastewater treatment plants. There, the solid waste is separated from the water, which is then purified before being released back into the environment. It will be reused for industrial, agricultural or environmental purposes. Furthermore, the gas from water treatment can be used to produce energy. They not only contribute to a healthy environment and good quality of life, but also achieve the goal of sustainable development.
While wastewater collection and treatment are critical to the health of urban residents storm sewers also play an important role. In urban areas, green has given way to concrete. As a consequence, there has been a loss of the land’s natural water retention as concrete cannot take in rainwater. When an extreme weather event causes heavy rain, storm sewers must cope with the water, so it does not flood the city. However, storm sewers are only part of the solution to water management and flood prevention.
To reduce flooding, an integrated urban management plan has been adopted, where all the factors — storm sewers, land planning and economic development — are considered together. Engineering innovations, additional facilities and increased green space requirements in new development projects have improved water retention in cities.
Sewers help improve urban public health, prevent urban flooding and boost environmental protection. Together they protect vital water resources and maintain the safety of people and property.
12. What’s the function of sanitary sewers
A. Cleaning dirty water. B. Collecting solid waste.
C. Delivering used water. D. Producing useful gas.
13. What does the underlined word “retention” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Absorption. B. Treatment. C. Purification. D. Distribution.
14. What’s the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 4
A. To explain a complicated theory. B. To provide supporting facts.
C. To raise improved suggestions. D. To describe a recent phenomenon.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Urban Unseen Network B. Modern City’s Management
C. Extreme Weather’s Solution D. Wastewater’s Potential Threat

I was in 7th grade when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was very sudden and unexpected for our family and obviously I was beaten. I tried my best to balance my first year of middle school and my home life, even if I knew this was impossible. I hated coming home from school every day for fear of what I would see when I got home. I hated seeing my mom sick all the time; she was not herself and all I wanted was for her to stop treatment and get better. Luckily, I had lots of support from my family, friends, and teachers during this hard time to help get me through it.
At the beginning of the year I was determined to stay on track with my homework and studying and get through my first year at middle school successfully. Slowly, I started to become more distracted while at home with taking care of my mom, cleaning the house and helping my grandma cook our meals. While I was at school, I could escape and put my mom’s sickness in the back of my mind while I hung out with my friends and enjoyed playing. I noticed that my quiz and test grades were increasingly getting worse, but I never brought this to the attention of my mom because I did not want to worry her. Eventually, all of my grades were lower than C’s.
I knew that I was not doing well at school, and I needed to get my grades back up. I knew that a lot of my teachers were cutting me some unimportant work because they knew what was happening at home. Ms. Zazoski, my English teacher was the most supportive teacher that I have ever had and I am so glad that I was in her class that year.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One day my teacher had me stay after school to have a talk with her.

While wastewater collection and treatment are critical to the health of urban residents, storm sewers also play an important role.

【37题详解】
考查主语从句。___2___ impressed me most作句子主语,是一个主语从句,引导词在从句中作主语,指给我印象最深的事,所以填what。
【38题详解】
考查固定句型。can’t help doing sth. “情不自禁地做某事”,是固定句型,所以填taking。
【39题详解】
考查名词。作be filled with的宾语,用名词,所以填warmth。

III.由whether或if引导的主语从句
whether与if皆可引导主语从句,但放在句首常用whether.
IV.由whoever, whatever等引导的主语从句
whoever = the person who或anyone who.who也可以引导主语从句,但只表示"谁",如:Who will win is not important. anyone与the person皆不能引导从句.
V.由it作形式主语引起的主语从句
that从句作主语时,常用it作形式主语,而把that引导的主语从句放到句后.在下列情况下,一般使用形式主语it,将主语从句放在句尾.
1)谓语是seem, appear, be (im)possible, be a pity, be a wonder, be likely等.如:
It seemed certain that this would win the prize.
2)在It is known... ; It is said... ; It is hoped... ; It is believed...等句型中.如:
It is said that our school football team won
3)主语从句也可以用it作形式主语,以wh-连接的句子作真实主语,放到句子后面.如:
It is still a question when we shall have our sports meet
注意:1)有时在"It is necessary(important, suggested等)+ that从句"结构中, that从句常用"should +动词原形"形式来表示虚拟语气,其中should常可省去.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
One day my teacher had me stay after school to have a talk with her. As I stepped up to her huge wooden desk, I could feel myself getting more and more nervous, surely knowing that she would have a talk with me about getting my grades up. Looking up, smiling, Ms. Zazoski started speaking empathetically. “This isn’t the end of the world. I know what you are going through at home, and if you need any support, I am here for you, always.” she said, in the most kind tone. “Thank you so much.” I said as she hugged me, warmth and love like my mother melting in my whole body.
That was the motivation that I needed to improve my grades. Walking out of her office, I was extremely relieved, as though a 1000 pound weight was lifted off my shoulders. It warmed my heart to know that even with obstacles in my way, there is always support nearby to help you through. I talked to all of my teachers and got all the missing work. By far, my 7th grade English teacher was the sweetest and most understanding woman that I had ever met; and now I am no longer afraid to ask for help or support.
