After I made it to the city center, I started to feel it might be easy for a foreigner to deal with the great size of Beijing. With growing confidence, I decided to take the subway to the hotel, not realizing that the network didn’t go that far. Impressed with the cleanliness of the station, I bought a ticket and boarded the first subway that came along.
After a few minutes I asked in English a young man seated next to me where I should get off closest to the Friendship Hotel. Wearing a smart business suit and tie he would surely speak English, wouldn’t he Unfortunately, he couldn’t understand me but seemed very friendly. I showed him the room card with all the information of the Friendship Hotel in Chinese characters (汉字). He looked at it, and then his eyes moved quickly to the carriage (车厢) subway map. Next, he raised three fingers of his right hand.
In Australia, raising fingers at someone is not usually nice, but this man wasn’t smiling. At the next station he showed me two fingers. Now in Australia, that’s really rude, but I got the message. When we stopped at the third station, he didn’t just point to the door, but got up, took me out of the train, and led me to the top of the stairs, and out onto the street. Then he stopped a taxi and told the driver where to take me.
All this came from a man who couldn’t speak my language, and I couldn’t speak his. I was now speechless, especially when he refused my offer of money. I felt a little embarrassed having even thought he would accept a tip.
This experience made it clear I had to learn some Chinese quickly or my adventures might start turning into misadventures.

It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on I think better that way.” But is that really true Does music help concentrate
Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration. In one small study, 133 students performed reading tasks while listening to either light music, hip hop, or no music at all. Students who performed the reading tasks in silence scored the highest. Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting and had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.
Volume (音量) plays a more important role than the type of music. The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration. The type of music didn’t matter. Data from the study showed once again that silence was the best environment to improve concentration.
However, music has a positive effect on work performance. Studies have showed that listening to music leads to positive changes in mood, as well as creativity. In fact, in music-listening cultures, which students are certainly part of, there’s actually a change in mood when the music is taken away.
It’s hard to convince my students that music doesn’t help with their concentration. Taj, a senior told me, “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read. However, when I write, I feel like music helps me concentrate deeply. I don’t have writer’s block. It’s easy for me to put my words on paper.”
“Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me. “You could actually be singing along with what you’re listening to and doing well in math.”
8. Which word can be used to replace the underlined word “distracting” in paragraph 2
A. Worrying. B. Exciting. C. Interesting. D. Relaxing.
9. What can we learn from the small study
A. Students do well in reading tasks while listening to music.
B. Music can’t improve people’s mood and creativity.
C. Different types of music lead to different performances.
D. The volume of music affects concentration.
10. What do Taj and Danela have in common
A. They believe music doesn’t help concentrate.
B. They use music to help with their paper-writing.
C. They can’t focus on reading while listening to music.
D. They don’t listen to music while doing math problems.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Should Students Listen to Music B. Does Music Help Concentration
C. Is Music Related to Reading D. Can Music Change Mood
D
Thirteen years ago, the Planet Earth wildlife documentary took us all on an amazing journey. We went from deep rainforests to the bottom of the ocean. Now a new one ,Our Planet, will let us see different animals and the influence of humans on the natural world. The documentary covers 50 countries and areas. It took more than four years to produce it.
With the latest 4K video technology, the show allows people a wonderful new look at nature. "People are given a chance to better get themselves into the lives of the animals” said Fothergill, one of the show s producers.
Besides showing Earth’s beauty, the documentary also talks about the planet's climate conditions. "Our Planet is here to say,' The planet is dying, and we're killing it.’" Fothergill said. In one sad scene, hundreds of walruses(海象),half-blind when out of the water, fall down a rock and suffer a painful death on the beach below. It shows how the climate conditions have influenced their natural habitat and explains why they've been forced to find the safe place on the rocks.
But the documentary is not all about sadness. It also talks about success stories, such as the ones of tigers. These animals are saved and live happily thanks to international agreements on environmental protection.
Asking more people to take action in protecting our planet is the final goal of the new documentary. What we do in the next 20 years will decide the future of all life on Earth.

A. To explain what our goal is in the future.
B. To call for more people to protect our planet.

The early April wind was colder than I expected as I walked anxiously toward the Holiday Inn at Union Square in San Francisco. With every step I took, I heard my mother’s words, “Johnny, I am all packed and looking forward to seeing you!”
After five years of trying to get a visa to the United States to visit me, she finally succeeded on the third attempt. The long and boring process, while at times heartbreaking, could not prevent my mom from her desire to make the trip. Despite being only five feet, three inches tall, Mom had always been the pillar (支柱) of our family. Her solution to the visa challenge proved once again that no barrier was a match for Mom’s strong determination and love for her family — in this case, me!
Although excited, I was extremely nervous. Mom and I had not seen each other in more than eight years, since I left Malaysia at eighteen to attend college in the U.S. Due to a fault, my application for permanent residency was put on hold. In spite of being gainfully employed and a homeowner, I could not leave the country until my paperwork was resolved.
In the beginning, our only source of communication was through letters. Later, it became lengthy phone conversations. Much had happened during the eight years while I was absent.
During the months before her U.S. trip, I tried to help my mom prepare what she needed to pack. I planned for her to stay with me for four months, during which time we would be traveling throughout the United States. Her reply was always, “Don’t worry about me. I know what I need. How about you What would you like me to bring you from Malaysia ” My answer never changed. All I wanted was a couple of bags of authentic curry and chili (辣椒) powder from our hometown of Melaka, as I was running low on these treasured spices.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When the day finally came, I waited patiently for her in front of the hotel.

【答案】8 B 9. D 10. C 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要就听音乐是否有助于集中注意力进行了讨论。
【8题详解】
词句猜测题。 根据第二段第一句“Research offers little to back up the idea that listening to music improves concentration.(研究几乎没有提供什么支持听音乐可以提高注意力的观点)”可知,本段主要讨论听音乐是否能提高注意力,结合画线单词上文和下文“Music with a higher intensity (强度) like hip hop was more distracting had a greater negative effect on task performance and concentration.(高强度的音乐,如嘻哈音乐更distracting,对任务表现和注意力有更大的负面影响)”可知,高强度的音乐,如嘻哈音乐是不能提高注意力的,是使人分心的,即使人很兴奋无法集中精力,由此可知,划线单词“distracting”的意思是“使人分心的”,和B选项“Worrying(令人兴奋的)”意思相近,故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第三段中的“The study found that the louder the music, the worse the performance in concentration.(研究发现,音乐越响,注意力越差)”可知,音量会影响注意力,故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。 根据倒数第二段中的“Taj, a senior told me “I wouldn’t be able to concentrate if I were listening to music and trying to read.(Taj,一个高年级学生,他告诉我,“如果我听音乐并试图阅读,我会不能集中注意力”)”和最后一段中的““Maybe not with reading, but when it comes to math, listening to music certainly helps,” Danela told me.(Danela告诉我:“听音乐也许对阅读没有好处,但是当涉及到数学时,听音乐肯定有帮助。”)”可知,Taj和Danela的共同之处在于,他们在听音乐时,无法集中精力阅读,故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。 通读全文,尤其是第一段“It is difficult for a teacher to decide whether to allow students to listen to music in the classroom. Every time students need to write an essay or work on a problem, they say, “Can I put my headphones on I think better that way.” But is that really true Does music help concentrate (老师很难决定是否允许学生在教室里听音乐。每次学生需要写文章或解决问题时,他们都会说:“我能戴上耳机吗?”我觉得这样更好。”但这是真的吗?音乐有助于集中注意力吗?)”可知,文章主要就听音乐是否有助于集中注意力进行了讨论,所以B项“Does Music Help Concentration (音乐有助于集中注意力吗?)”适合做文章的标题,故选B。

【答案】 When the day finally came, I waited patiently for her in front of the hotel. I was so excited that I could hardly contain myself. When I saw her walking towards me, I ran to her and hugged her tightly. She was wearing a bright yellow dress and a big smile on her face. We both had tears in our eyes as we embraced each other.
It was late afternoon by the time we reached my house in Baton Rouge. After settling in, we went to the kitchen to prepare dinner. I was excited to see that mom had brought the curry and chili powder from Malaysia. We cooked a delicious Malaysian meal together, and it was the best meal I had ever tasted. We talked and laughed until late into the night, catching up on all the years we had been apart. It was a moment I will never forget.
