Benny’s story is one of coming from the poor streets to a life of pets. The little cat was found on the streets after he was discarded out of a truck. He was saved and brought to the Wood County Humane Society, where he was able to recover from his injuries.
Benny was adopted (收养) by Anna Burwell, the adult services manager for Swanton Public Library and she started to bring him to work. Benny lives a good life at the library and takes on the role of protector. Of course, he goes home for the night and does not actually live in the library.
Benny spends his days making his way around the library, walking through the empty bottom shelves and driving the children into Storytime. In just a few weeks, he has made a perfect impression on the community.
Now, the library is considering using Benny as a treatment cat. That’s because he is a good listener and makes the children feel comfortable.
Library cats have been in the library for a long time. In fact, cats were kept in libraries during the Middle Ages to keep mice from eating the books. And they have been an important part of library life around the world ever since.
In 1745, cats were invited into the royal (皇家的) palace by Russian Empress Elisabeth to control mice in the library. The descendants (后代) of these cats still live in what is now the Hermitage Museum.
The most famous library cat was Dewey Readmore, who lived in the Spencer Public Library in lowa. He was discovered in the library’s drop box when he was only 8 weeks old in 1988 and lived there for almost 20 years.

A. It is a tradition. B. It is a must to kill mice.

Every year around August millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students. There is a simple solution to this problem; school uniforms (校服).
I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers (同龄人).
From sixth grade until I graduated from senior high school, I attended a school that required students to wear uniforms. The uniform was very simple: dark brown shoes, green-brown pants, and a white shirt. The uniform left little room for any kind of self-expression, especially through clothes.
However, I learned how to stand out by expressing myself through my personality, art, and sports. I did not know I could draw until the sixth grade. I also would never have learned of my musical abilities if it hadn’t been for my desire to find ways to express myself. Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.
Uniforms also contribute to a much safer learning environment. I remember a particular event that happened in my junior high school. A man ran away from prison and wanted to hide in the gym of our school. Luckily, cameras all over the school quickly found the stranger before any danger could ever happen as he was out of place. School officials kept the man locked inside our gym until the police came to take him back to prison.
Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class (经济阶层). In closing, wearing uniforms is good for both schools and students.
8. How does the author introduce the topic
A. By explaining a basic rule.
B. By challenging others’ views.
C. By describing a common problem.
D. By sharing his parents’ experience.
9. Which of the following could the author agree with
A. Uniforms should be more modern.
B. Uniforms can help shape better students.
C. Uniforms are popular with students.
D. Uniforms are bad for self-development.
10. What do the underlined words “out of place” in Paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Dressing differently. B. Standing straight.
C. Running fast. D. Breathing heavily.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To record his high school life.
B. To show his supportive view towards uniforms.
C. To ask students to like what they wear.
D. To introduce high school uniforms.
D
What you do after studying could have a big effect on how well you learn and remember. Today on Education Tips, we will explore two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.
When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after your study may help you remember what you have studied.
The basic idea is this: by stopping your activity after the study, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you are playing computer games.
While this might sound unusual to you, many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning—what is called “wakeful rest”.
A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember information they learned after doing wakeful rest.
If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do. Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. It is really that easy!
Besides wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS) notes that sleep helps people to learn in two ways. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention well and therefore cannot learn well”. It also says, “Sleep itself helps us to memorize and that memorizing is very important for learning new information.”
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) suggests that adults between the ages of 20 and 64 get between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per day. Teenagers may need a little bit more, and people over the age of 65 may need a little less.
Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it—a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
12. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The importance of sleep. B. The good ways to get a rest.
C. The reason for having a rest. D. The types of resting activities.
13. Which activity might be recommended shortly after studying
A. Reading a newspaper. B. Playing a video game.
C. Sitting there doing nothing. D. Having a nice sleep at night.
14. How long should teenagers sleep each day according to NSF
A. Less than 7 hours. B. Just 7 hours.
C. No more than 9 hours. D. Around 9 hours.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Low-cost Tips on Working B. Good Things to Do After Your Study
C. Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep D. How Long Should We Rest After Learning

There are many things in senior middle school that I still remember clearly. I studied three years in a country school, which is faraway. However, it has a good environment and strict but kind teachers, so I loved the school and all my teachers very much. One Friday, just as we began to read books in reading class at our desks, our teacher, Mrs. Hill, said that she needed to be out of the classroom for a few minutes. She asked the class to read in silence while she was gone. And she said that those who didn’t read books in silence would have to answer to her when she returned. It was well-known that Mrs. Hill was strict. So we had to be on our best behavior.
But that Friday, Mrs. Hill hadn’t been gone for ten seconds before some students in the classroom started to talk. From one corner of the classroom I heard Josh ask Nick, “Can I trade my candies for your toy ” At the other end of the room I heard Samantha tell Kayla, “Let’s sit together on the bus for the museum field trip tomorrow.” And so it went all around me, until about half of the students talked with each other.
After a while, I, too, forgot about Mrs. Hill’s instructions. I turned back and asked my friend Liza, “Can I borrow your storybook and keep it for a day ” As soon as the words were out of my mouth, Mrs. Hill walked into the classroom. The whole class returned to silence immediately. And we were full of fear.
Mrs. Hill slowly looked around the classroom and said, “If you were talking while I was gone, then please stand up.” The guilt (内疚) suddenly weighed heavily on me. “I shouldn’t have talked while she was not in the classroom. And now I should be honest and admit my mistake bravely. This is what my parents have always told me, “I thought. Then, I summoned up (鼓起) my courage to stand up, worrying about the punishment that waited for me. Then I looked around.

The custom of library cats is still very much alive and well, as Benny is the newest model of the Swanton Library.

Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. A 11. B

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“There is a simple solution to this problem: school uniforms. (这个问题有一个简单的解决办法:校服)”可知,作者用“this problem”引出了文章主题。根据第一段中“Every year around August, millions of teens take their parents to stores to buy new clothes for the start of the school year. Not every parent can afford this, and some teens are forced to go to school in the same clothes they wore last year. The obvious differences in clothes cause differences among students.(每年8月左右,数百万青少年带着父母去商店为新学年的开始购买新衣服。不是每个家长都能负担得起,一些青少年被迫穿和去年一样的衣服去上学。服装上的明显差异造成了学生之间的差异)”可知,这是一个普遍问题,所以作者是通过描写一个普遍问题而引出主题。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“I know from personal experience and surveys that wearing uniforms creates a sense of equality among peers (同龄人).(我从个人经历和调查中了解到,穿制服会在同龄人之间产生一种平等感)”和第四段“ Uniforms taught me that I was myself, except what I wore.(校服让我知道我就是我自己,除了我的穿着)”、第五段“Uniforms also help to a much safer learning environment. (校服还有助于营造更安全的学习环境)”和最后一段“Uniforms help provide a better educational experience for all students no matter what race, culture, or economic class (经济阶层).(校服有助于为所有学生提供更好的教育体验,无论什么种族、文化或经济阶层)”可推断,作者认为校服对学生有很大好处,能够帮助塑造更好的学生。故选B。

C No more than 9 hours. D. Around 9 hours.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Low-cost Tips on Working B. Good Things to Do After Your Study
C. Why Do We Need to Have a Good Sleep D. How Long Should We Rest After Learning
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. B

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】One possible version:
To my surprise, no one followed me. I lowered my head alone and was filled with fear. After looking around for a while, Mrs. Hill walked towards me. Strangely, she asked in a soft voice, “Why did you dare to stand up ” I said I wanted to be honest and that I realized what I had done was wrong. Unexpectedly, Mrs. Hill was quite amazed by my answer and praised me for that. Then she returned to the front of the classroom and explained why we should be honest.
With Mrs. Hill’s encouragement, another student stood up. Then more students followed until about half of the students stood up. Seeing it, Mrs. Hill praised us for our courage. Then, she asked us to sit down. We continued reading books. After we finished, Mrs. Hill reminded us to remember that everyone should be responsible for his behavior. We all agreed with her. And I was happy that in a way I set a good example to my classmates.
