When Marybeth Hearn was 10 years old, she asked her parents to let her train a dog to become a guide dog. It turned into a lifelong thing. Over more than fifty years, Hearn has raised 56 dogs to help visually impaired (视力受损的) people. But her influence doesn’t end there — the longtime high school teacher has encouraged several of her family members and some of her students to train many more.
When she looked to her parents for support years ago, things were different from what she expected. Her mom didn’t like dogs, and her dad doubted she would be able to find any money to pay for the cost of the training. However, Hearn presented the project at a Lions Club and raised $2, 500. So on a sunny summer day in 1962, the family drove home with a black Lab named Letta, the first of a long series of dog trainees.
Two sons and a granddaughter have followed in Hearn’s footsteps, but her greatest influence has come from guiding student trainers, who since 1992 have worked through a school club with 170 dogs that ended up in different service posts. They spend 14 months with each dog teaching them skills. The dogs live full-time with the students, attending their classes and field trips to become socialized.
The dogs then go to trainers employed by Guide Dogs for the Blind, an organization that partners with the program, before graduating and being paired with two-legged companions. Those that aren’t up to the difficult task of helping the blind can become other kinds of service animals. Often students attend the graduations and help pass the dogs on.
“I love seeing the look on kids’ faces ... when they get to see that dog again after three or four months and the dog remembers them,” Hearn said. “It’s a great feeling.”
4. What has Hearn done since she was a child
A. She has collected money for the blind.
B. She has trained dogs to help the blind.
C. She has petted and cared for many homeless dogs.
D. She has provided the blind with education for free.
5. What was the attitude of Hearn’s dad towards her plan
A. Mad. B. Uncaring. C. Unacceptable. D. Supportive.
6. If a dog fails to help the blind after graduation, it will _____.
A. continue to be trained
B. be taken away as a pet
C. live full-time with Hearn’s students
D. become another kind of service animal
7. Which of the following can best describe Hearn
A. Honest and hard-working.
B. Strong-minded and caring.
C. Outgoing and careful.
D. Strict and creative.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. D 7. B

Picture this: two new kids show up at school one day. One is dressed in sport trousers and a dirty T-shirt. The other looks like someone out of a fashion magazine. Which one is more likely to make friends on their first day
Everybody knows the saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover”. But let’s not pretend that style isn’t important. Other people pay attention to how you look. They are much more likely to like you if you are well-dressed. What’s more, when we look good, we feel more confident in ourselves.
You may think you have to wear a school uniform. That’s true, but there are still plenty of chances for you to show your style.
Put on your favourite dress and you will feel more outgoing and energetic. Wear something you don’t like, and see how much you feel like talking to someone you are fond of. Put on a nice suit like one that celebrities might wear and watch your posture change. Roll out of bed in yesterday’s dirty clothes and you will never feel like a winner. What you wear on the outside reflects the way you feel on the inside. Good style can even put you in a better mood.
That’s why it’s important to find a style that fits your personality. Different people look good in different things. It’s important to understand that style doesn’t mean just one thing. Some people may wear elegant dresses, while others like a more casual style. Some guys may feel comfortable in a suit, while others may just want to relax in jeans and a T-shirt. What is your style

Plastic straws (吸管) have been a major problem in global discussions of environmental damage. Maybe because of their small size, the production cost of straws is low. In many countries, straws are offered freely after buying soft drinks. Therefore, plastic straws are one of the most used plastics and pollutants in the world.
The plastic straw is light and small. Due to their small size, plastic straws are often eaten by sea animals. Environmentalists have shown that the death of many sea animals is caused by eating plastic straws. The other damaging characteristic of plastic straws is that they are made of materials which cannot degrade. That means the materials cannot be changed into small harmless (无害的) ones.
The most effective way of dealing with the environmental pollution caused by plastic straws is the reuse or banning (禁止) the use of plastic straws. Being plastics, the straws can be made new items. Many organizations around the world change used straws into new products. In Africa, local communities collect used plastic straws and use them to make mats and bags. Another way of dealing with environmental pollution caused by plastic straws is placing a ban on their production and use. Experts advise governments to ban using plastic straws to save the environment. A few countries in the world such as Rwanda, Macedonia, China, Kenya have already banned the use of plastic bags and are expected to include plastic straws and bottles. But it will be a long way to do this effectively.
There are few environmentally friendly and biodegradable productions to take the place of plastic straws. These productions include paper straws, bamboo straws. However, such straws are usually expensive as their production cost is high. It’s still a question whether they can entirely take the place of plastic straws.
12. Why can people be free to use plastic straws
A. They are very cheap. B. They are light and small.
C. They are dangerous. D. They are easy to use.
13. What does the underlined word “due to” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Cut up. B. Because of. C. Go on. D. Break out.
14. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. It’s not difficult to ban using plastic straws.
B. Many countries have stopped using plastic straws.
C. Experts advise people to stop producing plastic straws.
D. Some Africans change plastic straws into new products.
15. What does the author think of environmentally friendly straws
A. It is a must to use them.
B. It’s not easy to reuse them.
C. There are still some problems to be solved.
D. There are some other kinds of cheaper straws.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. D 15. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了塑料吸管对环境的危害、解决方法和可能的环保型替代产品。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。由第一段中的“Maybe because of their small size, the production cost of straws is low. In many countries, straws are offered freely after buying soft drinks.(也许是因为它们的体积小,塑料吸管的生产成本很低。在许多国家,塑料吸管是在购买饮料后免费提供的)”,可知因为塑料吸管的生产成本很低、很便宜,所以人们才可以免费使用塑料吸管。故选A项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。由第二段中的“The plastic straw is light and small.(塑料吸管又轻又小)”以及后文“Environmentalists have shown that the death of many sea animals is caused by eating plastic straws.(环保人士指出,许多海洋动物的死亡是由于食用塑料吸管造成的)”可知,由于塑料吸管体积小,它们经常被海洋动物吃掉,导致许多海洋动物的死亡,所以推知“due to”是“由于,因为”之意,和B项意思相近。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中的“Being plastics, the straws can be made new items. Many organizations around the world change used straws into new products. In Africa, local communities collect used plastic straws and use them to make mats and bags.(作为塑料,吸管可以制成新的物品。世界上许多组织都把吸管用在新产品上。在非洲,当地社区收集废旧塑料吸管,并用它们制作垫子和袋子)”可知塑料吸管可以制成新物品,而在非洲,人们用废旧塑料吸管制作成新产品,如垫子和袋子。故选D项。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。由最后一段“There are few environmentally friendly and biodegradable productions to take the place of plastic straws. These productions include paper straws, bamboo straws. However, such straws are usually expensive as their production cost is high. It’s still a question whether they can entirely take the place of plastic straws.(很少有环保和生物降解的产品取代塑料吸管。这些产品包括纸吸管、竹管。然而,由于生产成本高,这种吸管通常很贵。它们是否能完全取代塑料吸管,这仍是一个问题)”可知作者认为环保吸管目前仍存在一些问题,比如替代品很少和生产成本高,所以在这些问题未解决前,能否能完全取代塑料吸管,这仍是一个问题。故选C项。

“We’ll stop by the supermarket and buy some snacks and fruits. Now hurry and eat and then we’ll go. It’s going to be a lovely day. Grandma is coming with us. She’ll be here any minute.”
Alan ate his breakfast and then ran into his room to get his shoes. The problem was that he could only find one of them. He looked under his bed, but all he could see were dirty pants. He moved some of his toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find his shoe. After he had checked everywhere in his room, he ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it ” he asked.
His mom thought about how many times she’d told Alan to clean his room up. She said something to Alan’s grandma in a low voice. Then, she said to Alan,“You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take your brother Alex to the Lego Land. Grandma will stay at home with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the Lego Land,” Alan cried. “I’m sorry, Alan. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you did not do it. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not cleaning your room. You will stay home.”
Alan ran into his bedroom, crying. His mom came to the door and said, “Alan, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told Grandma not to give you any sweets until you make your room clean and tidy.” She went out with Alex and the brothers’ dad. After a minute, they drove away.

8. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph
A. By telling a story. B. By listing some facts.
C. By giving a definition. D. By raising a question.

A. We often pretend that style is important.
B. We shouldn’t overlook the significance of style.
C. We must stress that style is the most important thing.
D. We don’t know style matters.
10. Which of the following statements is NOT a benefit of good style
A. Making people feel more confident.
B. Helping people be more outgoing and energetic.
C. Making people have a good mood.
D. Helping people win more games.
11. Where can you probably read this passage
A. In a storybook. B. In a survey report.
C. In a personal diary. D. In a school magazine.

12 Why can people be free to use plastic straws
A. They are very cheap. B. They are light and small.
C They are dangerous. D. They are easy to use.
13. What does the underlined word “due to” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Cut up. B. Because of. C. Go on. D. Break out.
