Disney began his career by being fired by a newspaper for not being creative enough. Later, his Mickey Mouse cartoons were rejected because they were considered to be “too scary for women”. Isabel Crook was born into a Canadian family in Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province in 1915.While her parents were engaged in setting up schools and education organizations in Southwest China, Isabel herself was more interested in anthropology (人类学) and the ethnic minorities in China. As a foreign girl born in an Asian country that was undergoing great changes, she had every reason to be curious about what was going on around her.
At the age of 23, Isabel graduated from a Canadian college with a master’s degree and began carrying out field research in Sichuan Province. In 1947, Isabel and her husband David Crook were warmly welcomed by the Communist Party of China (CPC) to observe and study the revolutionary land reform taking place in China. In 1948 the couple accepted the invitation from a CPC representative to teach at a newly-built foreign affairs school. The school was the forerunner (前身) of today’s Beijing Foreign Studies University(BFSU). As a teacher at BFSU she laid the foundation for foreign language education in China.
As two of the first three foreign teachers at the school, Isabel and her husband brought new Western teaching methods to the classroom. Michael Crook, Isabel’s second son, noted that since some students were extremely poor during the 1950s and 1960s, his parents were especially sensitive to their situation and did what they could to help them while protecting their self-esteem. For example, they would bring food such as eggs and bread for picnics and share them with students who brought steamed bread of corn.
According to the younger Crook, because of his parents’ belief in communism, they chose to use political texts as their teaching materials, such as works once admired by Karl Marx. Understanding that the students would become diplomats (外交官) representing China, his parents tried to help students gain knowledge in different fields to better prepare them for communicating with foreigners in English.
On December 15th 2018, Isabel got the award of “The Most Influential Foreign Expat during 40 Years of China’s Reform and Opening up” from the Chinese government. On September 17, 2019, Isabel was awarded the Friendship Medal — the highest honor in China for foreigners — for her lifetime of devotion to China.
4. What did Isabel independently do according to the text
A. She did field research.
B. She helped the poor students.
C. She was invited to teach English in China.
D. She introduced teaching methods of Western countries to China.
5. What can we infer from paragraph 2 and paragraph 3
A. Isabel and her husband were rich at that time.
B. In the 1950s, Isabel’s husband worked as a reporter in China.
C. Isabel made great contributions to China’s foreign language education.
D. Isabel and her husband taught students only in Western ways of teaching.
6. Why did the couple use political texts as teaching materials
A. They believed in communism.
B. They were crazy about Chinese politics.
C. They wanted to spread the spirits of Karl Marx.
D. They had to teach many subjects including politics.
7. Which of the following can best describe Isabel
A. Patient. B. Caring. C. Strict. D. Romantic.
C
Make Up Your Mind to Succeed
Kind-hearted parents have unknowingly left their children defenseless against failure. The generation born between 1980 and 2001 grew up playing sports where scores and performance were played down because “everyone’s a winner.” And their report cards sounded more positive (正面的) than ever before. As a result, Stanford University professor Carol Dweck, PhD, calls them “the overpraised generation.”
Dweck has been studying how people deal with failure for 40 years. Her research has led her to find out two clearly different mind-sets that have a great effect on how we react to it. Here’s how they work:
A fixed mind-set is grounded in the belief that talent is genetic - you’re a born artist, point guard, or numbers person. The fixed mind-set believes it’s sure to succeed without much effort and regards failure as personal shame. When things get difficult, it is quick to blame, lie, and even stay away from future difficulties.
On the other hand, a growth mind-set believes that no talent is entirely heaven-sent and that effort and learning make everything possible. Because the ego (自尊) isn’t on the line as much, the growth mind-set sees failure as a chance rather than shame. When faced with a difficulty, it is quick to rethink, change and try again. In fact, it enjoys this experience.
We are all born with growth mind-sets. (Otherwise, we wouldn’t be able to live in the world.) But parents, teachers, and instructors often push us into fixed mind-sets by encouraging certain actions and misdirecting praise. Dweck's book, Mind-set: The New Psychology of Success, and online instructional program explain this in depth. But she says there are many little things you can start doing today to make sure that your children, grandchildren and even you are never defeated by failure.
8. What does the author think about the generation born between 1980 and 2001 ________________.
A. They don’t do well at school.
B. They are often misunderstood.
C. They are eager to win in sports.
D. They are given too much praise.
9. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who______________.
A. doesn’t want to work hard
B. cares a lot about personal safety
C. cannot share his ideas with others
D. can succeed with the help of teachers
10. What does the growth mind-set believe ____________________ .
A. Admitting failure is shameful.
B. Talent comes with one’s birth.
C. Scores should be highly valued.
D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.
11. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study ______________.
A. Encourage them to learn from failures.
B. Prevent them from making mistakes.
C. Guide them in doing little things.
D. Help them grow with praise.
D
This year, people around the world are lining up to buy electric vehicles even as prices increase. Electric vehicle, EV, demand has stayed strong even as the average cost of lithiumion (锂离子) battery cells increased to an estimated $160 per kilowatt-hour in the first quarter from $105 last year. Costs rose due to supply issues, restrictions on Russian metals and investor speculation (投机).
For a smaller vehicle like the Hongguang Mini, the best-selling EV in China, the higher battery costs added almost $1,500, equal to 30 percent of the listed price. But gasoline and diesel fuel costs have also increased since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, and experts noted that environmental concerns are also pushing more buyers to choose EVs.
Manufacturers from Tesla to SAIC-GM-Wuling, which makes the Hongguang Mini, have passed higher costs on to consumers with price increases for EVs. More may be coming. Andy Palmer, chairman of Slovak EV battery maker InoBat, said, “rising costs will have to be passed onto carmakers.” But EV shoppers have so far not slowed down. Worldwide EV sales in the first quarter jumped nearly 120 percent, said the website EV-.
Venkat Srinivasan is director of the Center for Collaborative Energy Storage Science at the U.S. government’s Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. He said, “more and more people would buy EVs despite the cost of the battery and the vehicle.”
This increase in battery costs could be an unusual short-term change in a situation in which improving technology and growing production have pushed costs down for almost 30 years. Industry data showed that the $105 per kilowatt hour average cost in 2021 was down nearly 99 percent from over $7,500 in 1991.
Experts say battery costs could stay high for the next year or so, but then another large drop is likely as big investments by automakers and suppliers change the balance from shortage to surplus. “It’s like a bubble (泡沫) and for that bubble to settle down, it’s going to be at least the end of 2023,” said Prabhakar Patil, a former LG Chem executive.
The industry has long been awaiting the battery cell cost of $100 per kilowatt-hour, as a signal EVs were reaching a similar cost to fossil-fuel vehicles. But with gasoline prices high and consumer preferences changing, such cost considerations may no longer matter as much, experts say.
12. Why does the author mention Hongguang Mini
A. To present a fact. B. To give an example. C. To introduce a topic. D. To make an assumption.
13. What will possibly lead to the drop in battery costs in the future
A. More EV shops. B. Production growth. C. Sufficient supplies. D. Technology improvement.
14. What does the author think of the prospect of EVs
A. Promising. B. Unclear. C. Doubtful. D. Confusing.
15. What can be inferred from the text
A. At present demands for EVs beat supply. B. People concern price more when buying cars.
C. EVs sell much better than fossil-fuel vehicles. D. People prefer EV mainly because of conflict.

Peter had been saving money for a very long time. He was struggling so much that all he wished was to go abroad and make more money. So when he reached the required amount he needed for the expenses, he travelled to a foreign country to make a good living.
Upon getting there, Peter worked very hard and finally built his own business. After years of hard work, he became a millionaire. He called his family and informed them that they would not have to worry about money any more for he would be sending them enough and everyone would be happy.
He couldn’t have been proven more wrong!
Five years later, as the business grew, Peter had no time to stay at home and was always busy running his business and attending meetings.
He missed his family. He hadn’t seen them in four years. Every year he promised himself that he would go and visit them but that promise was broken at every attempt to accomplish it for one business reason or another. But his family were understanding and never complained. Peter had thought that money would make his life good but now that he had more money than he ever imagined, he was not happy. He was tired of trying to pretend that he was happy with his projects and work.
Sometimes he wanted to leave the country and the business and go back to his old life, but the thought of not being able to survive if he left his business stopped him.
When he met his family a few years later it was only for a few days. His family wanted him to stay longer but he didn’t. At the same time, he was given the most difficult and challenging task during his career whose completion would not only improve his image but also result in him earning millions of dollars. This work kept him quite engaged that he gave his mind wholly to the task. His hard work resulted in great profit and he was more successful than ever before.

This author struggled to write a novel that publishing companies would call “pure rubbish” several times — 27 to be exact. The man just wouldn’t quit, though. One fateful night, he ran into an old friend who was a children’s literature editor. The friend agreed to publish Geisel’s work. Better known today as Dr. Seuss, Geisel was never again called a failure after his first book became a hit.

C. Isabel made great contributions to China’s foreign language education.
D. Isabel and her husband taught students only in Western ways of teaching.
6. Why did the couple use political texts as teaching materials

C. They are eager to win in sports.
D. They are given too much praise.
9. A fixed mind-set person is probably one who______________.
A. doesn’t want to work hard
B. cares a lot about personal safety
C. cannot share his ideas with others
D. can succeed with the help of teachers
10. What does the growth mind-set believe ____________________ .
A. Admitting failure is shameful.
B. Talent comes with one’s birth.
C. Scores should be highly valued.
D. Getting over difficulties is enjoyable.
11. What should parents do for their children based on Dweck’s study ______________.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. B 15. A

When he met his family a few years later, it was only for a few days.

【答案】Para 1:
To celebrate his success, he threw a big party. Lots of people came to congratulate him. Watching his colleagues and their families celebrating his success, he felt so alone. Then someone asked him about his family, which left him missing his family more. After the party, he booked the next flight available to his beloved homeland and flew home the next day. Back home in his old house, he enjoyed the quality time with his family so much, chatting, playing games and even going fishing with them. He felt so much happier than when he was abroad making big money.
Para 2:
He finally knew that money couldn't give him happiness but the support of his loved ones would. He stopped devoting all his time to his business for he knew he had wasted so many years running after something that was not worth leaving his family behind. He decided to move back to his hometown so that he could spend more time showering his family with love and giving them the attention they deserved.
