Where will you go next Our editors and explorers pick some most exciting destinations for
the year ahead. Grab your bags and go!
Mostar, Bosnia
Partially destroyed during the Bosnian War (1992- 1995) , history-rich Mostar still bears scars of the past. Wander around and you ’ll pass newly renovated apartments next to buildings riddled with bullet holes. Local and International artists regularly decorate the abandoned structures with colorful murals. Mostar ’s most tangible image of peace is the 16th-century Stari Most, rebuilt in 2004. It connects the city ’s predominantly Christian Croat west side
with the mainly Muslim Bosniak east.
Tohoku, Japan
Less than three hours by train from Tokyo, home of the 2020 Summer Olympic Games, Tohoku features pristine forests, gorges and crater lakes, thousand-year-old temples and shrines, and venerable local festivals— yet less than 2 percent of international travelers come here. For skiers, Tohoku regularly records some of the planet ’s heaviest snowfalls,
and resorts such as Appi Kogen are exhilaratinglyuncrowded.
National Blue Trail, Hungary
Hungary is a dream hiking destination thanks to the country ’s National Blue Trail. It ’s part of the nearly 6, 500-mile European long-distance walking route E4, which begins in Spain and ends in Cyprus. So, while you could use the Blue Trail as a launchpad for an epic,
cross-Europe trek, Hungary ’s historic route is best experienced as a singular destination.
Zakouma National Park, Chad
Home to a rapidly growing African elephant population— some 559 in 2019 and a thousand expected by 2024-Zakouma National Park is an under-the-radar African safari destination. The park ’s location, in southeastern Chad, one of the world ’s least visited countries,
makes Zakouma a best-kept secret— one worth sharing to help ensure its continued success.

A. Mostar. B. National Blue Trail.
C. Tohoku. D. Zakouma National Park.

It has always been horrible for me to picture my life in old age. My recent visits to the
senior care center, however, relieved some of my fears and provided valuable food for thought.
Looking for meaningful ways to spend my weekends after my exams, I signed up for a program of arts and crafts for the elderly run by my schoolmates. I was informed that theRenci Nursing Home, where the program would be held, accommodated some of the less fortunate elderly in Singapore. Some background research gave me the impression that many of them suffered from physical problems and had little family support. As a result, I expected the atmosphere there to be discouraging. And, judging by the lack of interest in the painting activities, I truly sensed a feeling of aimlessness there. Given that we live in a society in which the relationships between the generations are weakening, perhaps the disappointing atmosphere in the home wasn’t surprising. The people were cutoff from the ties that make life
meaningful.
Is it safe to say then that our lives after retirement will likely feel aimless But after I spoke to a Portuguese-Chinese man, I thought that this wasn’t necessarily so. At the age of 90, he displayed a surprisingly strong sense of control over his life. His liveliness was exceptional among the elderly population in the home. He had spent his life either traveling around the world as a backpacker, or working hard in Singapore to save up for his trips. He had made it a rule to learn foreign languages, exercise and eat healthily- something he continued to do during
his stay in the nursing home.
While he spoke to me about how his time in London had shaped his view of cultural difference,I looked into his eyes. I knew that this was the kind of control over life that I wanted
for myself. I don’ t want to spend half of my time wandering about in foreign countries like he
did, but I do want to appreciate the richness that life has to offer.
24. Why did the author goto the Renci Nursery Home
A. It was run by his schoolmates. B. He meant to learn arts and crafts.

25. What did the author think of the nursing home before he entered it
A. It was filled with depression. B. It solved physical problems.
C. It was full of impressive activities. D. It connected different generations.
26. What mainly helped the author change his attitude toward old age
A. The efforts of the elderly. B. The view of cultural difference.
C. The liveliness of an oldman. D. The care of the nursing home.
27. What can we learn about the author
A. He was trying to call on people to care for the elderly.
B. He found what he wanted for his life--living by his own law.
C. He would travel by himself like a backpacker.
D. He made adequate preparations for his old age.

Audiences were wowed by the display of hip-hop culture at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, as a total of 45 breakers, or B-boys and
B-girls, showed off their impressive moves and skills on the dance floor.
After dozens of tough battles against top breakers around Asia, Chinese B-girl Liu Qingyi, known as “671”, claimed the historic first-ever women’s gold medal in breaking at Gongshu Canal Sports

This is the first time that breaking was included as a medal event at the continental sports gala. With DJs playing tunes and three MCs hosting the event on the stage, B-girls and B-boys needed to respond, or freestyle, to whatever music the DJs decided to play, not performing a prepared one.“I’m happy to win gold. It wasn’t an easy battle to win because I had many competitions and events before. I just got back to China after the world
championships. Now I’ve been taking part in the Asian Games,” said Liu Qingyi aged 17.
In the breaking final on Saturday, Liu impressed the audience with her wonderful and powerful moves, as well as her creative performance integrating traditional Chinese cultural elements (元素). “Chinese culture may sometimes seem a bit abstract (抽象的). But by integrating these cultural elements into our own breaking moves, we can better show Chinese
culture to the audience,” said Liu.
5
“I think I did a pretty good job today, because I’m competing in China and I have the support from the audience. I’m quite good at power moves and I’m making improvements in
other aspects,” said Liu after winning gold.

As newer, more advanced technologies come out, huge amounts of electronics (电子产 品) are thrown away, instead of being reused. These goods often end up in landfills, where the chemicals inside them may be a danger to the environment. Electronics can contain harmful materials. If these materials get into the ground or water, the pollution can cause serious problems. Most electronics require metals. These metals must be mined from the
Earth. Often the mining process creates serious pollution.
6
A group known as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Forum is trying to make people more aware of the problems of e-waste. Recently, the WEEE Forum asked researchers from the United Nations (UN) to study a kind of e-waste that’s often not noticed because people don’t consider the goods to be electronics. The WEEE Forum calls this kind
“unable-to-be-seen” e-waste.
The UN study shows that about 1/6 of all e-waste is “unable-to-be-seen”. Though it’s “unable-to-be-seen”, it’s certainly not a small amount. The “unable-to-be-seen” e-waste weighs about 9 billion kilograms. The WEEE Forum says that if this e-waste were put into 40-ton trucks and the trucks were then lined up, the line of trucks would be about 5,630
kilometers long.
The surprising kind leading the “unable-to-be-seen” e-waste group was toys. Worldwide, roughly 7.3 billion electronic toys are thrown away each year. These include goods like car racing sets, electric trains, and musical toys. They also include toys with electronic parts, like dolls that speak or games with electronic timers. In all, toys make up about 35% of “unable-to-be-seen” e-waste. But the problem is far larger than just toys. The report also shows that other everyday goods like home alarms, smoke alarms, power tools, and computer
cables (电缆) are also big sources of “unable-to-be-seen” e-waste.
The WEEE Forum is hoping that as more people and governments become aware of
e-waste, they will make a much greater effort to make sure electronics get reused.
32. What is paragraph 1 mainly about
A. The amount of electronics. B. The development of electronics.
C. The ways of reusing electronics. D. The pollution of electronics.
33. What causes some e-waste often unnoticed
A. People’s interest in electronics’ character.
B. People’s impression on electronics’ package.
C. People’s misunderstanding of electronics.
D. People’s struggle to adapt to electronics.
34. How does the author support his viewpoint in paragraph 3
A. By showing numbers. B. By providing examples.
7
C. By making a summary. D. By making a comparison,
35. Which of the following is the WEEE Forum’s solution to e-waste
A. Designing advanced electronics. B. Making electronics get reused.
C. Stopping giving away electronics. D. Reducing electronics’ production.

best friend, for a sleepover would take my mind off Drew. So far, that wasn’tworking.
Later in my room, Kendall and I were doing our nails when Drew came in, with a bowl of
popcorn in his hands. “Does anyone want popcorn ” asked Drew.
“Mom doesn’t like food in here, and you got into my room without asking!” I said angrily.
“Time to leave, Drew,” I pointed to the door.
I decided an ice cream would cool me down. In the kitchen, Kendall and I had hardly
11
started eating when I heard Drew hurrying down the stairs. “Hey, who wants to have a pillow
fight ” he asked.
“I do!“ cried Kendall, sticking her ice cream in the freezer. She and Drew ran upstairs,
leaving me alone with my bad attitude.
I wasn’t about to follow them like a puppy. There was something I had to do. I took the cream and slipped into Drew’s room. I found his slippers, and stuck the cream inside them.
Satisfied, I grabbed a pillow, ready to fight him.
I ran into my room and hit Drew with the pillow. He countered with a blow to my legs. Kendall threw her pillow into his side. Before long, we were all laughing. I lifted my pillow over my head to give Drew a final blow. But I missed. It crashed into the popcorn bowl left on

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分40分)
Dear Sir,
I am Li Hua, a student studying in London, who is more than thrilled to be informed of the message that there will be a Chinese painting exhibition in your local art gallery. I am writing to apply for being a volunteer.
As a student from China, I have been keen on Chinese paintings. As you know, China has a growing influence on today's world. In the meanwhile, more attention is paid to the study of the traditional culture in Chinese high schools. So I have got the hang of the knowledge of Chinese paintings. By the way, I can also do well in communicating with others in oral English.
I would extremely appreciate it if I have a chance to receive your approval.
Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
续写:
Paragraph 1:
I froze, not knowing what to say. Silence swallowed the whole room. My heart beating wildly, I tried to come up with some reasonable explanations but in vain. “I am sorry,” I said. Then Drew spoke up, “It’s all my fault. The pillow fight was my idea, and I brought in the popcorn. I’ll clean it up.” I couldn’t believe what I had heard. I should have been grateful to him. Instead, I was suspicious. A random act of kindness That wasn’t like Drew.
Paragraph 2:
I cornered Drew to tell me why he took the fall (承担责任). “It was my fault, and I didn’t want you to get in trouble. Besides, shouldn’t brothers and sisters stick up for each other ”He shrugged. I suddenly realized that he was just trying — in his own way — to be my brother. Maybe even my friend. I didn’t know if it would last, but for now, my headache was gone. We invited Drew to watch a movie in the living room. He agreed and went to get his slippers. Then I remembered, “Drew, wait!”

Text 10
W: Hi, everyone! Welcome to Mount Raven, the most popular ski place in the state.
I’m Jessie Williams, and this is our weekend weather report. This morning we’re seeing sun with cloudy periods as well as a few hours of light snowfall. Right now I am at the top of Mount Raven where the temperature is plus two and expected to rise to about six degrees by noon. Overnight temperature will probably drop to at least minus seven. Tomorrow’s forecast. With the wind chill factor, that could put us at a record low of minus twenty. Conditions are perfect for skiing this weekend, but if you’re determined to head out to the slopes tomorrow, please remember to put on warm clothes to protect yourself from the cold, especially exposed areas like your ears, cheeks and hands. Now, we have to go back to the newsroom for a look at what’s happening in sports. Have a splendid weekend!
