Just as with any other subject, people who learn sign language are learning a new skill and using their brains to do this, thus expanding their minds in a new field.
A research has been carried out which proves that deaf children who learn sign language at an early age are more likely to do well academically. This is partly due to their increased ability to communicate with those around them. However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complicated language system, just as the English which is used in this article. Thus, children who learn sign language have already learn about the way language works and is made up, which will help in future studies especially if they decide to learn to speak English, or any other spoken language.
A deaf child who can use sign language develops a sense of identity. This will lead to a happier and more confident child because they know their place in the world is secure.
Again, for non-deaf children and adults who learn sign language, the academic advantages spread into social and cultural ones. Learning a language gives rise to greater confidence for those people, as they are able to communicate with someone whose peers may struggle to do so. And the skills of language learning are easily transferable into learning other languages but also into other academic pursuits.
There can be no doubt that learning sigh languages is a useful attempt for anyone — whether they are deaf or non-deaf. The social and cultural advantages should not be taken lightly. And, especially with children, learning a language which helps people with a disadvantage may encourage them in the future to do more volunteering and other such work. They can be taught to hug all people regardless of their differences.
24. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. Academic advantages of deaf kids learning sign language.
B. Causes of deaf children learning sign language.
C. Approaches to helping deaf children recover.
D. Difficulties that deaf children meet in their language study.
25. Why does learning sign language make a deaf child happier
A. It makes a deaf child more humorous.
B. It provides a deaf child with a life without danger.
C. It helps a deaf child perform well in building up their body.
D. It gives a deaf child a sense of belonging.
26. What will a child learning sign language be like in the future
A. Extremely intelligent. B. Slightly imperfect.
C. Socially responsible. D. Financially successful.
27. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To discuss the different purposes for people to learn sign language.
B. To show it is important for both deaf children and non-deaf children to learn sign language.
C. To call on non-deaf children to learn sign language.
D. To attract deaf children to communicate with non-deaf children.
C
Agriculture may feed the world, but it is also contributing to environmental problems. Agriculture production uses about 70% of the Earth’s fresh water and makes up about a third of greenhouse gas emissions. But it doesn’t have to. Farming is moving inside, and farmers aren’t exactly what they used to be.
Take for example Grover and Phil, two robots, or farmers of the future, working at Iron Ox, a farm tech company in Silicon Valley, planning to set up farms around the country in order to grow crops closer to consumers in a greener way. “We have different robots that are looking after the plants. They can check and scan them for issues, and change the amount of nutrients plants get and the amount of water they get, explained Brandon Alexander, CEO of Iron Ox.
Iron Ox’s method is very different from what Alexander calls the “spray (喷洒) and pray” applying to agriculture on a Texas farm, where he grew up and more chemicals create more quantity at the expense of quality. “Besides, a lot of the water in field farming gets just washed out and never actually reaches the plants. And when 70% of your fresh water is going into farming, only 10% of that actually reaches the plants. It’s just generating a lot of waste,” he said. However, the indoor farming allows farmers to grow any crop at any time, regardless of climate change. It also uses hydroponics (无土栽培), growing crops without soil so water goes directly to the roots.
“In the indoor farming industry today, even with all the investments into it, these investments are a drop in the bucket in spite of the great potential of this new industry,” he added.
Iron Ox is now magnifying its business in more states. Alexander says the company will produce about 100 times more produce over the next 18 months than it’s currently producing to satisfy greater needs.
28. Which of the following may be Grover and Phil’s work
A. Producing nutrients for crops. B. Watering plants scientifically.
C. Curing plants of their diseases. D. Delivering produce to consumers.
29. What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A. Chemicals contribute a lot to the quality of crops.
B. Hydroponics is impractical in growing crops now.
C. Indoor farming has advantages over traditional one.
D. It takes much more time for crops to grow indoors.
30. What does Alexander say about indoor farming in Paragraph 4
A. Its investments are far from enough. B. It causes a waste of more water.
C. It needs buckets to grow crops. D. It is unlikely to attract investments.
31. What does the underlined word “magnifying” in the last paragraph mean
A. Changing. B. Reducing. C. Quitting. D. Expanding.
D
Watching the behavior and body language of zoo animals could be the key to understanding and improving their welfare, new research suggests.
The new review, by the University of Exeter and the University of Winchester, says closer observation of animal behaviors — a method called Qualitative Behavioral Assessment, developed in farming — could show even more about animals’ state of mind.
An animal’s positioning of its body, facial movements and activity levels are among the things that might tell whether it is excited, calm, interested, nervous, relaxed, etc.
“Zookeepers are knowledgeable about their animals, and they will often recognise an animal’s state of mind by its behavior and body language,” said Dr. Paul Rose, of the University of Exeter.
“What we are suggesting is a more scientific method of this, carried out over time.”
“Certain behaviors will show certain moods in an animal, and we should build our knowledge of this for different animals that live in zoos. For example, lions have a lot of facial expressions, and research on these expressions could help zoos understand the animals’ state of mind. This information could then be used to improve welfare by changing diets, feeding times or any number of other aspects of the way animals are kept.”
Dr. Rose carries out much of his research at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and is now examining how the swans there might show their state of mind through their behavioral expression.
“We’re looking at how much time they spend exploring their habitat, which could show what they’re feeling,” he said. “When they’re unsure, they appear to move less and be more careful, and draw their feathers close to their bodies.
The study suggests research opportunities for Qualitative Behavioral Assessment and practices that could be used by zoos. “Animal welfare in zoos has improved greatly in the last 10 or 20 years, and this method gives zoos another way to recognise and improve the welfare of animals,” Dr. Rose said.
32. What do the university researchers suggest
A. Closer observation of zoo animals’ behaviors.
B. More studies on the welfare of zoo animals.
C. More attention to farm animals’ body language.
D. Greater improvements of farm animals’ welfare.
33. Why does the author mention lions
A. Because he wants to show the uncertainty of animal body language.
B. Because he wants to show body language differs in different animals.
C. Because he wants to show lions change their expressions easily.
D. Because he wants to show lions are treated badly in zoos.
34. What has Dr. Rose found about the swans
A. They have more facial expressions than lions.
B. They appear confident most of the time.
C. They spend little time in their habitat.
D. They move little in fearful situations.
35. What does Dr. Rose express in the last paragraph
A. Animal welfare in zoos is worrying.
B. Farm animals enjoy greater welfare than zoo animals.
C. Qualitative Behavioral Assessment is purposeful.
D. Zoos do a good job in recognising animal body language.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
There are two kinds of garlic, a kind of vegetable — hardnecks and softnecks. Plant hardneck varieties in northern areas six to eight weeks before a hard frost (霜). 36 They do not last as long in storage. 37 Their heads contain several rows of smaller cloves (蒜瓣). They are usually the kind shoppers find in supermarkets.
Do not plant the garlic you find in the supermarket. 38 It also may not be the kind best for your growing conditions.
Separate the head into individual cloves. Do not remove the outer part of thin skin. Cover them with soil, press them down and water well. If the temperature falls below four degrees Celsius, add a thick cover of straw (稻草) to the garden bed. 39
It is fine for the garlic plants to send out green growth, during autumn and early winter, even in northern climates. Do not worry about possible damage to this growth in cold weather.
Remove the straw cover in spring. Put a little fertilizer between each row 5 to 10 centimeters from the stems. Keep the bed free of weeds.
40 Finally, remember to store garlic heads in a cool, dry spot. Do not wash them.
A. Carefully dig the hole and move off the soil. B. Water the straw to settle it into place. C. Softneck varieties are better for growing in warmer climates. D. Your garlic will be ready for harvest in mid-to-late summer when half of the plant has turned yellow. E. Their heads have a single row of large divisions, formed around an underground stem (茎). F. Growers may have made a chemical on it to stop it from growing while at the store or in your home. G. Plant only garlic seeds from the healthiest heads saved from last year’s harvest.

“Ready to pick lychees (荔枝), Hannah ” Daddy asks as we pull into my grandmothers driveway.
“Ready.” I smile and get out of the car.
Daddy closes his car door. He walks to the lychee tree in my grandmother’s front yard. “Hello, Family Tree,” Daddy says.
There Daddy goes, treating that tree like it’s a person. I’m smiling at Daddy when the door opens and my grandmother shows up. Grandma used to live in China, in a province called Guangdong. That’s where she learned to grow lychees.
“Hungry for lychees. Hannah ” Grandma asks.
I shake my head. I don’t want them. Lychees look different from all the fruits I like.
I laugh happily as Daddy climbs up the tree. The lychees are many and most are up high. After Grandma passes Daddy the cutter, he cuts the end of a branch heavy with fruit.
“Daddy! Why are you cutting the tree you love ”
Daddy smiles. “Don’t worry. Cutting the ends of branches doesn’t hurt Family Tree. It makes her stronger.”
He cuts down more branches, and Grandma and I pick their fruit. Each lychee looks strange to me. Grandma eats a lychee. With a smile, I drop my lychees into the boxes we will take to relatives. Grandma shares with everyone in our family.
“Are you almost done ” I ask Daddy.
“Not yet,” Daddy says. The branch he stands on seems not to support him.
“Isn’t it dangerous up there ”
“Nonsense.” Daddy picks a lychee. “You won’t hurt me, will you, Family Tree ”
There Daddy goes again.
“Plunk (扑通一声)!” say the lychees when they hit the bottom of a box. Then I hear a loud sound of a branch breaking into pieces. Grandma starts shouting, and I walk around to face the tree. There’s Daddy on the ground again. Near his feet is a broken branch!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

第二节(满分25分)
参考范文:
Daddy says, “The branch broke so slowly and lowered me softly down.” He points to where the low-hanging branch used to connect to the tree and laughs uneasily. Grandma is worried. Daddy gives a thumbs-up. “I’m good.” He hands me a lychee. “A special gift from Family Tree.” I’m nervous to taste the lychee, but I don’t want to make Daddy sad. I take the lychee’s ugly skin off and look at the soft fruit before I eat. Then I try it. The lychee sure tastes sweet.
Daddy leans against the tree and asks, “Do you like it now that you’ve tasted it ” Instead of answering, I take another lychee from a box. This time, Daddy laughs at me. “Family Tree’s got a few surprises up in her branches, but she always grows good lychees.” I smile as I eat my second lychee. Then I touch our tree sofly like Daddy does as if I finally understand the meaning of family. “Delicious lychees, Family Tree.”

W: I see. So the one in the morning. OK. How many people
M: Well, three of us, me and my two daughters.
W: 10 for adults and 5 for children. How old are your daughters

W: Did you get the balloons from the store
M: No, there was none left. It must be everyone’s 50th birthday this week.
W: Well, at least we have the cake. It’s going to be here by 3:00 p.m. When is Greg getting here
M: Laura is taking him to the cinema. I think it finishes at 5:00 p.m., so I can’t imagine they’ll be back any earlier than 6:00 p.m..
W: I’ve just realized we have 20 people coming but there are only 12 chairs.
M: People can stand.
W: Dad, most of them are over 60.
M: We didn’t have this much trouble when Laura was getting married. Fine, I’ll go borrow some from the neighbors.
W: You can ask Mrs. Wilson. She had those garden chairs for her son’s 12th birthday. Hopefully, she kept them.
M: If not, some of us will just have to sit on the floor. Honestly, I don’t remember this ever being so stressful.
W: Why don’t you sit down and relax for five minutes with a cup of tea I’ll go and speak to Mrs. Wilson.
M: OK, I’m glad you are here. Tell Mrs. Wilson thanks. We’ll send her some cakes later.

(Text 10)
Hello, I’m Harry. I’m here to talk about my work as a pilot for Emperor Airlines. Its headquarters are here in Texas and I moved here from California to take up the role last year. My love of flying started in childhood. My dad was a pilot so I traveled on planes from an early age. Later, I studied aeronautics at college in Ohio. I also joined a flying club to get a feel of flying a plane, which confirmed my flying career. After graduation, I got an opportunity with Emperor Airlines in California. It was a lengthy process with lots of training for trainee pilots. We learnt to tell the flight routes, work out the required fuel and so on. We were also trained to deal with emergencies. For example, we needed to make an emergency landing because of the sudden breakdown of an engine. That was the most difficult part of the training for me. Then I started at the bottom as a First Officer. Now I rank as a Senior First officer. I like the view — my office window changes every day! And with the variety of passengers and crew I get to meet. Although I don’t come into as much contact with passengers as the flight crew, there’s never a boring moment.
