Down House, home of Charles Darwin:
Fun fact
Charles Darwin, his wife, Emma, and their children lived at Down House for 40 years from 1838. Several rooms appear as if the family still live here: with croquet sets thrown into an under-stairs cupboard, a half-played game of backgammon on a side table and Emma’s knitting(毛 线 ) left on a chair in the drawing room. Upstairs, an exhibition showcases Darwin’s voyage aboard HMS Beagle, including a reconstruction of his cabin. Outside, visitors can explore the sheltered gardens which Darwin used as an open-air laboratory, and the greenhouse in which he planted rare
plants and devised botanical experiments.
No room at Down House escaped Darwin’s experiments. In the drawing room he
once placed a jar of earthworms on the grand piano to see whether they could hear.
Getting there
A 15-minute drive from the A21/Farnborough. Free parking. The R8 bus from Orpington stops nearby (except Sundays) or the 146 bus from Bromley North and South terminates ( 终 点 站 ) in Downe village, half a mile from the property. The
nearest railway stations are Chelsfield or Orpington, about four miles away.
Value for money
It’s £12 (adult), £7.20 (child), or £31.30 (family with 2 adults). Under 5s go
free.
Opening hours
Open daily 10am-6pm from 30 March to 30 September; daily 10 a.m. — 5 p.m.
between 1 to 31 October. Opening times vary through the winter (check website for

After years of observing human nature, I have decided that two qualities make a difference between men of great achievement and men of average performance — curiosity and discontent. I have never known an outstanding man who lacked either.
And I have never known an average man who had both.
Together, these deep human urges (驱策力) count for much more than ambition. Galileo was not merely ambitious when he dropped objects of varying weights from the Leaning Tower at Pisa and timed their fall to the ground. Like Galileo, all the great
names in history were curious and asked in discontent, “Why Why Why ”
Fortunately, curiosity and discontent don’t have to be learned. We are born with them and need only to recapture them. “The great man,” said Mencius, “is he who does not lose his child’s heart.” Yet most of us do lose it. We stop asking questions. We stop challenging custom. We just follow the crowd. And the crowd desires only the
calm and restful average.
Most of us meet new people, and new ideas, with hesitation. But once having met and liked them, we think how terrible it would have been, had we missed the chance. We will probably have to force ourselves to waken our curiosity and discontent and
keep them awake.
How should you start Modestly, so as not to become discouraged. I think of one friend who couldn’t arrange flowers to satisfy herself. She was curious about how the
experts did it.

The way to begin is to answer your own excuses. You haven’t any special ability Most people don’t; there are only a few geniuses. You haven’t any time That’s good,
because it’s always the people with no time who get things done. Harriet Stowe,
mother of six, wrote parts of Uncle Tom Cabin while cooking. You’re too old
Remember that Thomas Costain was 57 when he published his first novel, and that
Grandma Moses showed her first pictures when she was 78.
However you start, remember there is no better time to start than right now, for
you’ll never be more alive than you are at this moment.
24.In writing Paragraph 1, the author aims to .
A.present an argument B.make a comparison

B.Trial and error leads to the finding of truth.

26.What can you do to recapture curiosity and discontent
A.Observe the unknown around you. B.Develop a questioning mind.
C.Lead a life of adventure. D.Follow the fashion.
27.What can we learn from the last two paragraphs
A.Gaining success helps you become an expert.
B.The genius tends to get things done creatively.
C.Lack of talent and time is no reason for taking no action.
D.You should remain modest when approaching perfection.

Different ways have been applied to dealing with waste paper, specifically used newspapers. Some people put them in the recycling area, while others keep them as wrappers ( 包 装 纸 ). While these are both good measures, a Japanese publishing
company had a better idea for their end use.
The Mainichi Newspapers Co., Ltd. invented the “Green Newspaper” , which allows people to grow plants with it. This unique newspaper was published on Greenery Day, which is focused on environmental news and made of green paper with seeds placed into it. What makes it even more special is the ink (油墨) used to print
5
words and photos, which is made from plants. The publisher advises readers to tear the used newspaper into small pieces and plant them in a container with soil. They should water them, like they would do for any plant. Within a few weeks, the seeds will grow
into plants.
This brilliant concept was invented by Dentsu Inc., one of Japan’s most famous advertising companies, which works with the publishing company on the initiative (倡 议). The publisher’s belief is environmental sustainability ( 持续性). As its mission statement says, “The Mainichi doesn’t take action only through information, but also by solving global issues.” With joint efforts, this initiative has reached the corners of Japan and sold around millions of copies daily. Other such initiatives producing
plantable paper are also seen in India and the US.
About 95 million trees are lost for producing newspapers every year. The Internet, the number of whose users stands for 62.5 percent of the population worldwide, has influenced how people read news and the print readership has dropped greatly. However, the reinvention and reimagination of this newspaper will bring about a
change in the publishing industry as well as having an environmental influence.
28. Why was the Green Newspaper invented
A. To get newspapers cheaper. B. To make the most of waste paper.
C. To improve the printing. D. To advertise the publishing company.
29. What can be learned about the “Green Newspaper”
A. It uses high-tech materials.
B. It provides energy for seeds.
C. It’s printed with plant-based ink.
D. It’s published to celebrate Greenery Day.
30. What message does the publisher’s mission statement convey
A. It’s easier said than done. B. Everything comes to one who waits.
C. Many hands make light work. D. Actions speak louder than words.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph
A. About 59 million trees are lost for producing newspapers.
B. The Internet has changed the way people read news totally.
C. The popularity of the Internet leads to the fall of the print readership.
D. The “Green Newspaper” will encourage more people to protect the environment.

People who sleep fewer than six hours a night are more likely to die early, researchers in University of Warwick have found in a recent study. They discovered that people who slept for less than six hours each night were 12% more likely to die
before the age of 65 than those who slept the recommended six to eight hours a night
The researchers pointed out that previous studies had shown that the lack of sleep was associated with problems like heart disease and high blood pressure. However, the researchers also found that sleeping too much was linked to an early death. Those who slept for more than nine hours a night were 30% more likely to die early, as an article in the latest Sleep suggested. That directly contradicts another passage in the same journal last month suggesting that people who slept for ten hours or longer a night were more likely to live to 100. This was thought to be because people who lived into
extreme old age were healthier and therefore slept better.
However, the authors of the latest research contradicted this and suggested that long sleep was a sign of underlying illnesses such as depression and low levels of physical activity. Professor Francesco Cappuccio at the University of Warwick said: “While short sleep may represent a cause of ill-health, long sleep is believed to
represent more an indicator of ill – health.”
He also mentioned: Modern society has seen a gradual reduction in the average amount of sleep people take, and this pattern is more common among full-time workers suggesting that it may be due to social pressures for longer working hours. On the other hand, the worsening of our health is often accompanied by an extension of
our sleeping time.”
Consistently sleeping six to eight hours per night may be good for health. However, whether to achieve the goal depends on various factors such as the environment as well as measures of public health aimed at favourable changes of the s working
environments Professor Francesco Cappuccio added.
32.What did researchers in University of Warwick find
A.Six to eight hours ’ sleep can be appropriate for people.
B.People at an old age are healthier because they sleep longer.
C.People who sleep fewer than 6 hours each night die before 65.
D.Sleeping for more than 9 hours a night does good to one’s health.
7
33.What is Professor Francesco Cappuccio most likely to agree with
A.How long we sleep depends on our education
B.Our health becomes worse because we sleep less
C.Modern people sleep less because they work longer
D.Long sleep is what causes our health problems
34.What did the researcher think may help people have proper sleep
A.Social pressure B.Extension of sleeping time.
C.Longer working hours D.Changes of working environments.
35.What can be the best title for this passage
A.Time to Sleep early B.How Long Should We Sleep
C.The Importance of Sleep D.Longer Sleep Makes Better Health

How deep can a person dive underwater without any 56 (breathe) equipment As one of the world’s top female freedivers, China’s Xu Tongtong’s
answer is beyond the limit.
Freediving is gaining 57 (popular) across the world. Divers rely only on their lung capacity to plunge as far as they can-either in open water in so-called “depth”
events or in the swimming pool, 58 (simple) called “pool” events.
This year, the 35-year-old Xu 59 (dive) 100 meters underwater successfully in both constant weight (CWT) and constant weight bifin (CWTB) contests, becoming only the third female freediver on the planet 60 (reach) this depth. “When I dived 100 meters and grabbed the depth tag, I knew I had done it and 61 (swim) back to the surface with a smile,” Xu joyfully recalled of her 62 (history) feat (壮举).

That is 63 I fell in love with freediving,” she told Xinhua in a recent exclusive interview. The biggest attraction of freediving lies 64 facing up to and overcoming our fears. The training is a process of constantly knowing oneself, said Xu. After three months of training and competing this year in Panglao, Xu decided to stay on the island to continue her training and coaching,

It was Christmas Eve. The small local train was almost empty. It was snowing very
hard outside. Suddenly the train stopped and everyone wondered what was wrong.
Then the train conductor walked through the train. “I am very sorry,” he said to everyone. “The snow is too bad. We can’t go forward and we can’t go back. We have to stay here until the snow stops. And then someone will come and move the snow off
the train tracks.”
“How long will we be here ” asked Melanie. “We have to get to Leeds by8: 30 pm
to catch our train to Manchester.”
“I don’t know,” said the conductor. “But it is7: 30 pm now. I’m sorry. I don’t think
we will get to Leeds in time.”
11
Melanie wanted to cry. When she married Craig in July, they moved to a small village in the Yorkshire Dales. She loved Craig very much, but life in the village was very quiet. She had not made any friends and she missed her family. She had not seen
them since the wedding. She wanted to be with her family at Christmas.
Craig put his arms around Melanie. “It will be OK,” he said. “You will see your family tomorrow. ”The conductor was talking to a family with two children at the back of the railway carriage. The children were crying loudly. “But we have to be at Grandma and Grandad’s ! We wrote letters to Santa. We told him we would be in Leeds on Christmas night! He won’t know where to find us. We won’t get any
presents!”
Everyone was very unhappy. Everyone was talking loudly. They were shouting at
the train conductor.
Then an old man stood up and said, “Everyone! Please calm down. I used to work on this railway line and know this kind of weather very well. I think we will be here until tomorrow morning, or maybe longer. So we must make our own Christmas Eve

Dear Sir /Madam,
I’m Li Hua, an exchange student from China. Learning that volunteers are wanted
for a classical Chinese music concern to be held in a local concert hall, I feel delighted
and decide to apply for the position.
Frankly speaking, it is the intention of improving myself and helping visitors know
more about the unique Chinese art form that drives me to seize this golden
opportunity.
When it comes to my strengths, not only do I have a good command of English, I
am also outgoing and ready to help others, which I think can make me qualified as a
volunteer. What’s more, having served a local concert hall in China for nearly two
years, I have rich experience in organization and presentation, contributing to my
confidence of doing the job well.
I’d appreciate it if you could take me into consideration. Looking forward to your
reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

W: In Florida.
M: What You were having a vacation while the rest of us were studying on campus in
the cold February
W: Not exactly. I spent most of my time underwater.

W: I was on a special field trip. I went with my biology class.
M: So you went diving. It must be great fun!
W: You might say so. The sea is full of strange fascinating things. I was able to see
different plants and animals under the sea.
M: How wonderful it is!If I’d been in Florida in February, I’d rather spend my time

M: I bought this power-saving refrigerator here last month. But it turned out to waste
more electricity. I need to return it unless you can give me a reasonable explanation.
W: I’m sorry, sir. Please allow us to check it first.
M: No problem. I spent a large amount of money on it, and I must say I’m really
disappointed.

W: Sir, are you sure you were using it according to the instructions
M: Not really. Why ask
W: Because the power-saving function is not automatic. You see, there’s a small
button here. You need to press it to enable the power-saving function. Now, do you
still insist on returning it or would you like to give it another try
M: Oh, this is embarrassing. I was being stupid without reading the instructions. I’ll
keep it.

In 2014, Amazon released the world’s first voice-controlled “smart assistant”, called
the Echo. It performed a variety of functions, including setting alarms, creating to-do
lists, and providing real-time information such as weather, traffic and other news. Two
years later, Google came out with the $180 Google Home. In 2017, the toy company
Mattel came out with Aristotle, their idea of a personal assistant, aimed at kids. If you
are in the market for one of these smart assistants, there are a number of things to
consider. For instance, Google Home can answer a wide variety of questions and has a
music library of 35 million songs. It also has many functions that work well with the
TV, and is $50 cheaper than Amazon Echo. Echo can all be operated just by voice
command. It has a music library of 2 million songs. Mattel’s Aristotle can do most of
what the other two can, but is meant to be more of a personal companion to children. It
can be used as a baby camera in your child’s early years, and still be useful until
around middle school. It plays interactive games with them, reads to them, and serves
as an instructional resource as the children grow up. In summary, all three have their
benefits.
