课时作业(一) Unit 10 Part A Topic Talk
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
In the future, when robots can be used both in homes and in other areas, they could improve the living standards of people. Many people burn their energy on their day to day tasks like cooking, cleaning after work, etc. When robots can complete such jobs, people can spend more time with their family and friends. Experts say that many major problems in the modern world are caused by miscommunication. When people have more time, they can talk freely to solve such issues and eventually create a happy society.
Robots can be used on certain jobs to avoid accidents caused by careless behaviour of some people. When robots are used on such work, it does not risk any human life due to accidents at the workplace. Human resources can be efficiently used by performing tasks which demand human skills like critical thinking and problem solving. Robots can be used on low end jobs like moving heavy things and heavy weightlifting.
While some people talk about how useful robots can be to humans, others voice their concerns about reduction in human value and the creation of a lazy society due to heavy dependency on robots. When robots become cheaper to produce, employers may prefer to use more robots than humans. As the technology constantly improves the abilities of robots,it could weaken the value of humans. Many people may rely on robots heavily. Some may even develop the habit of using robots on tasks that they can easily do. This could create a lazy society.
As an aging society, Japan sees it as a must to build robots that take care of elderly people in their homes, because without them, the nation's health care system can't cope. There will simply be too many elderly people to care for as the nation faces a decreasing birth rate, an aging population, and the loosening of family ties. However, many of Japan's elderly people would prefer human helpers rather than robots. Above all,Japan wants, if not “needs”, its dreams of robots in the home to come true because its immigration (移民) policy is anti immigration.
In conclusion, robots can be used on anything that can eventually improve humans' living standards but we can't depend on them too much. Robots can be used to help humans live in harmony and form a happy society.

A team of engineers at Harvard University created the first robotic fly. Designed to do what a fly does naturally, the tiny machine is the size of a fat housefly. Its mini wings allow it to stay in the air and perform controlled flight tasks.
“The added difficulty with a project like this is that actually none of its components is off the shelf and so we have to develop them all on our own,” said Robert Wood, a Harvard engineering professor.
They engineered a series of systems to start and drive the robotic fly. “The seemingly simple system which just moves the wings has lots of interdependence (互相依赖) of the individual components, each of which individually has to perform well, but then has to be matched well to everything it's connected to,” said Wood.
While this first robotic flyer is linked to a small, off board power source, the goal is eventually to equip it with a built in power source, so that it might someday perform data gathering work at rescue sites, in farmers' fields or on the battlefield. “Basically it should be able to take off, land and fly around,” he said.
Wood says the design offers a new way to study flight mechanics and control at insect scale. Yet, the power, sensing and computation technologies on board could have much broader applications. “You can start thinking about using them to answer open scientific questions, you know, to study biology in ways that would be difficult with the animals, but using these robots instead,” he said. “So there are a lot of technologies and open interesting scientific questions that are really what drives us on a day to day basis.”
5.What is the typical characteristic of the robotic fly
A.It's automatic.
B.It's very small.
C.It's controllable.
D.It's quite powerful.

An online supermarket company—Ocado in the UK has recently displayed a robotic hand that can pick fruits and vegetables!
When an embryo is in the womb (子宫), the very first sense it develops is touch. The sense of touch is also the one that lasts longest—as we get older and our vision and hearing begin to weaken, touch still remains. Humans use their touch to protect themselves, to create emotional relationships with other people and to experience pleasure. Can you imagine the life without it
The sense of touch comes from a network of nerve endings (神经末梢) and special touch receptors on the surface of the skin. While there are different kinds of touch receptors, they help us judge pressure, texture and vibrations. They are located in our fingertips, palms, soles of our feet, face, lips and tongue.
When we touch something, the mechanoreceptors feel the touch and through a network of nerves send signals to the brain. This informs the brain about the location of the touch, the amount of force used, and the speed at which it was used.
Several different techniques have been tried in the past few years to create such a robotic hand—using three fingers. But this latest design by SoMa copies the human hand. It is made up of flexible materials which grasp the thing based on its size and shape. Then air pressure is used to control the movement of the robotic fingers to pick objects safely and without causing damage.
The next step would be for the robot to judge how ripe the fruits and vegetables are, and apply pressure accordingly. Members of the research team are currently working on adding computerized vision to the robots, so that they can see what they are grasping.
Does all this mean robots can replace people According to Ocado, they help improve productivity by removing some of the repetitive tasks done by humans.
1.What is focused on in the second paragraph
A.The origin of touch.
B.The importance of touch.
C.The development of touch.
D.The process of transporting touch.
2.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A.The brain. B.The touch.
C.The nerve. D.The signal.
3.What is the typical feature of the latest robots
A.They can see what they're grasping.
B.They can take the place of people in work places.
C.They can tell whether the fruits and vegetables are ripe.
D.They can hold things according to their outer features.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.A Sense of Touch for Robots
B.A Robotic Hand for Classifying Fruits
C.A Robotic Hand with a Gentle Touch
D.A Robot Made of Flexible Materials

Scientists have created the world's first living, self healing robots using stem cells (干细胞) from frogs. Named xenobots after the African clawed frog from which they take their stem cells, the “machines” are less than a millimeter wide—small enough to travel inside human bodies. They can walk and swim, survive for weeks without food, and work together in groups. “These are entirely new life forms,” said the University of Vermont, which conducted the research with Tufts University's Allen Discovery Center.
The researchers removed living stem cells from frog embryos (胚胎), and left them to hatch. Then, the cells were cut and reshaped into specific “body forms” designed by a supercomputer—forms “never seen in nature”, according to a news release from the University of Vermont.
Xenobots even have regenerative abilities. When the scientists sliced into one robot, it healed by itself and kept moving. They don't look like traditional robots—they have no shiny clothing or robotic arms. Instead, they look more like a tiny drop of moving pink flesh. The researchers say this is deliberate—this “biological machine” can achieve things which typical robots of steel and plastic cannot. “Traditional robots degrade over time and can produce harmful ecological and health side effects,” researchers said in the study. “As biological machines, xenobots are more environmentally friendly and safer for human health.”
According to the researchers, these robots could be used to clean up radioactive waste, collect microplastics in the oceans, or even carry medicine inside human bodies. Aside from these immediate practical tasks, they could also help researchers to learn more about cell biology—opening the doors to future advancement in human health and longevity. This sounds like something from a sci fi movie. Some people even voiced their concern that humans might be taken control of by those xenobots. However, the researchers in the study say there is no need for alarm. They can't reproduce or evolve (进化).
5.What is this passage mainly about
A.The advantages of a medical robot.
B.The application of robots in biology.
C.The general introduction of a living robot.
D.The medical value of African clawed frogs.

A.They can do everything that traditional robots can.
B.They can break up steel and plastic while degrading.
C.They are able to cure people of all kinds of diseases.
D.They are harmless to the environment and human health.
8.What is the researchers' attitude to the development of xenobots
A.Doubtful. B.Positive.
C.Cautious. D.Casual.

Amazon. comInc. has plans to drop off packages directly into shoppers' houses. The world's largest online retailer has announced Amazon Key, a lock and camera system that users control remotely to let delivery associates (伙伴) put goods into their houses. Customers can create temporary passwords (密码) for friends and other service professionals to enter as well.
The smart lock may help Amazon get sales from shoppers who cannot make it home to receive an order and don't want the package stolen from their doorstep. It also signals Amazon's determination to win the market of home security devices, where Alphabet Inc.'s Nest Labs competes.
“This is not an experiment for us,” said Peter Larsen, Amazon vice president of delivery technology, in an interview. “This is a key part of the Amazon shopping experience from this point forward.”
Members of Amazon's shopping club Prime can pay $249.99 and up for a cloud controlled camera and lock that the company offers to install. Delivery associates are told to ring a doorbell or knock when they arrive at someone's house. If no one greets them, they press “unlock” in a mobile app, and Amazon checks its systems in an instant to make sure the right associate and package are present. The camera then streams video to the customer who remotely can watch the in home delivery take place. The associate cannot continue with other trips until the house is again locked.
It is unclear if such protections will persuade customers that the service is safe to use. Larsen said stealing was “not something that happens in practice”, based on early tests of the Amazon Key program. He added that if a problem arises, “Yon can call customer service and Amazon will work with you to make sure it's right, reimbursing (赔偿) you for any loss or damage in some cases.”
9.What can we learn about the Amazon Key
A.It has a limited use.
B.It can prevent stealing in reality.
C.It has been accepted by customers.

I don't think I can recall a time when I wasn't aware of the beauty of the ocean. Growing up in Australia, I had the good fortune of having the sea at my side. The first time I went to Halfmoon Bay, I suddenly had the feeling of not being able to feel the ground with my feet anymore.
For my 10th birthday, my sister and I were taken out to the Great Barrier Reef. There were fish in different colors, caves and layers of coral. They made such an impression on me. When I learned that only 1 percent of Australia's Coral Sea was protected, I was shocked. Australian marine (海洋的) life is particularly important because the reefs have more marine species than any other country on earth. But sadly, only 45% of the world's reefs are considered healthy.
This statistic is depressing, so it's important for us to do everything to protect them, The hope that the Coral Sea remains a complete eco system has led me to take action. I've become involved with the Protect Our Coral Sea activity, which aims to create the largest marine park in the world. It would serve as a place where the ocean's species will all have a safe place forever.
Together, Angus and I created a little video and we hope it will inspire people to be a part of the movement. Angus also shares many beautiful childhood memories of the ocean as a young boy, who grew up sailing, admiring the beauty of the ocean, and trying to find the secrets of ocean species.

Koalas are pictured everywhere in Australia—on cleaning products, on boxes of chocolate, on sports team shirts. Yet the animals live only in pockets along the east coast.
They once inhabited the entire coastline. The koala population dropped after farmers cut down many of the forests where koalas lived, and hunters killed the animals for their fur.
“By the early 1900s, koalas were basically shot out of south Australia,” says ecologist Bill Ellis, who studies the relationships among living things and their environments.
I recently joined Ellis and his team in a forest on St Bees Island, 19 miles off the northeastern coast of Australia, with eight other volunteers. The island is a natural laboratory, yielding findings that may help protect koalas elsewhere on the continent.
The volunteers searched the island for koalas in the blue gum trees. When we found a koala,we gathered information about the trees in the area.
Blue gum is a species of the eucalyptus tree (桉树) in which the funny leaf eaters spend most of their time. Eucalyptus trees are native to Australia, and their leaves are the main food source for koalas. Although koalas can walk on the ground, they are better suited for life in the canopy, the high cover of branches and leaves in a forest.
What has Ellis' research told him so far The population of St Bees seems to be healthy. Yet Ellis wonders whether the koalas might be heading for hard times. The island is overrun with wild goats, and Ellis thinks the goats are eating the small blue gum trees.
Without those trees, the koalas will run out of food in the future. Ellis hopes more research will help him understand how to protect the blue gum trees—and the koalas that depend on them. “I think that's what everyone is trying to do—to make a difference,” Ellis says.
5.What can we know from the first paragraph
A.Koalas' pictures can be found everywhere in the world.

7.What will Ellis most probably start to do next
A.To keep the population of St Bees healthy.
B.To kill all the goats on the island.

D.To protect blue gum trees for koalas.
