When she was just 9 years old, Hilde Lysiak became famous across the United States for reporting on different news stories.
Hilde Lysiak’s father was a reporter for New York Daily News. When she was young, he often took her to work with him, so she developed a strong interest in news reporting.
At age 8, Hilde Lysiak started her own newspaper, called Orange Street News (OSN). Her family lived on Orange Street at the time. Hilde Lysiak wanted to cover stories important to everyone in her town. Following the rules her father had taught her, she researched and reported stories in her monthly newspaper. She also set up her own website and reported on YouTube.
OSN suddenly became famous when a murder happened in town, and 9-year-old Hilde was the first person to report it. Soon, news organizations around the country were writing and reporting stories about Hilde. However, not everyone was happy about Hilde’s efforts. Some people criticized (批评) her parents for allowing her to report on something as unpleasant as a murder. Others criticized Hilde for “pretending to be a reporter”. Hilde was upset about the complaints (埋怨). She responded with a YouTube video, “I never began my newspaper so that people would think I was cute,” she said. “I want to be taken seriously. I am sure other kids do, too.”
That wasn’t the first time Hilde had found it hard for people to take her seriously, which was mainly because of her age. But she never let that stop her. Hilde continued reporting.

A new study published on Monday in an American Heart Association journal Hypertension, examined 360,000 participants who provided blood, saliva (唾液)and urine samples, as well as detailed information about their lifestyles. Researchers found that adults who napped (打盹) often were more likely to develop high blood pressure and have a stroke (中风). But that doesn’t mean napping causes these health issues-instead, napping may be due to unhealthy behaviors. The researchers found that a high percentage of frequent nappers reported cigarette smoking, daily drinking, sleeplessness and other factors that could cause health-related issues.
Dr. Margaret Blattner, a clinical instructor, from the department of neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, tells PEOPLE that frequent or long daytime naps can have a bad effect on healthy nighttime sleep. Napping during the day may make it harder to fall asleep at night or cause nighttime sleep to become fragmented (支离破碎的) and missing out on nighttime sleep can cause severe daytime sleepiness.
“Often, naps continuing long are less beneficial than more brief daytime naps; people often wake up unrefreshed after a long nap,” she adds. “Additionally, long daytime naps take away time from other healthy things that people enjoy during the day: spending time with family, enjoying hobbies, and exercise.” When napping during the day becomes unpredictable, uncontrollable, or stops an individual from finishing what they need or want to do, it could show a possible sleep disorder.
Blattner believes that taking naps can also be beneficial. “Napping is not always a cause for concern. Taking a nap can be refreshing and enjoyable,” she says. “The key is, are you missing out on things that you enjoy because you are too sleepy to stay awake-that can indicate a problem-or does the nap help you get more out of your day ”
“Taking a brief nap can feel refreshed, reduce stress, and improve focus. Early afternoon is a good time to nap, as this agrees with a physical circle drop in energy,” Blattner continues. “However, napping too late into the afternoon or evening may have a bad effect on nighttime sleep quality and make it harder to fall asleep.”
8. According to paragraph 1, adults who napped often could ________.
A. get angry more easily B. become fatter and fatter
C. develop high blood pressure D. have a better sleep at night
9. What does Dr. Margaret Blattner intend to express in paragraph 2
A. Methods of having a good sleep at night.
B. Causes of frequent or long daytime naps.
C. Importance of having a good sleep at night.
D. Bad results of frequent or long daytime naps.
10. How can people benefit from taking a brief nap
①Reducing stress ②Feeling refreshed ③Having a better appetite ④Improving concentration ⑤Keeping proper body weight
A. ③④⑤ B. ①②④ C. ①③⑤ D. ②③④
11. Where can you most probably find the text
A. In a science magazine. B. In a literature magazine.
C. In a sports magazine. D. In a fashion magazine.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. A

【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Taking a brief nap can feel refreshed, reduce stress, and improve focus.(短暂的小睡可以让人感到神清气爽、减轻压力并提高注意力。)”可知,短暂的小睡可以让人感到神清气爽、减轻压力并提高注意力。故选B。

Beijing No 4 Intermediate People’s Court said on Thursday that it concluded 77 cases of smuggling (走私) precious animal products from the beginning of 2015 to June this year, with about 40 percent of defendants (被告) given prison terms of three or more years. The products were found to be frequently made of body parts of some endangered wild animals such as elephants, turtles, bears and wolves, Wang Jing, vice-president of the court, told a news conference.
”Most of the defendants were migrant workers, students and tourists coming back to China,“ Wang said. ”Some aimed to sell the products for profits or send to friends and family members as gifts, while they wanted to use them to help with diseases.“
Wang explained that some of the defendants received heavier penalties (刑罚), such as a long-term imprisonment and a high fine, because the animal parts they smuggled were from animals listed on the national key protection of wildlife or related to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES). For example, a defendant surnamed Yan was sentenced to 10 years in prison, along with 200,000 yuan($27,968)in fines, for smuggling 393 fish bladder products, the court said. Yan was caught while arriving at the Beijing Capital International Airport from Mexico on March 21, 2018, and the suspected products were discovered by the customs staff members in Yan’s luggage, it said. The products were later identified as being made of drum fish in Gulf of California, and the fish is listed on the CITES, it said, adding that the products were worth of about 2.51 million yuan($351,000).
To effectively fight the crime, the court has issued a guideline on the smuggling of precious animal products to help judges accurately apply laws and unify (统一) the standards of relevant case hearings.
On Thursday, the court also disclosed four other smuggling cases, showing its determination and effort to protect precious animals by rule of law.
12. What did Wang Jing tell the news conference in paragraph 1
A. Who the products would be sold to. B. Where the wild animals came from.
C. What the products were made of. D. How the wild animals were caught.
13. How many years was the defendant surnamed Yan sentenced to in prison
A. Five years. B. Seven years. C. Ten years. D. Twelve years.
14. Which can replace the underlined word ”disclose“ in the last paragraph
A. Have some doubt about. B. Feel a little upset about.
C. Try to discover facts about. D. Give people information about.
15. What can be a suitable title for the news report
A. Beijing court handles 77 cases of smuggling animal products
B. Beijing court makes an effort to recognize wild animals products
C. Beijing court helps judges apply laws about smuggling animal products
D. Beijing court issues guideline on smuggling of precious animal products
【答案】12. C 13. C 14. D 15. A

Bus driver Charlie was out at 3 am to drive his bus around Torresdale Avenue near Cottman in the Tacony neighborhood when he saw a tiny girl waiting at the bus stop. It was Jill, a 4-year-old little girl.
It was the early hours of a rainy morning and Charlie was out to drive his SEPTA’s 56 bus on his regular route. As usual, he picked up his passengers one by one. Of course, he had no idea that he would pick up a special passenger at this time in the morning. Just as he was about to pass a stop near the Tacony neighborhood, a woman passenger told him about a little girl she had seen, all alone waiting at the bus stop. He stopped his bus and was amazed at what he had seen. Wearing her purple raincoat, sleeping clothes, and her boots, little Jill waspatiently waiting for the bus to stop so she could ride on it.
The bus driver could not believe his eyes. His passengers at the time were also surprised to see a tiny kid all alone in the rain at that moment. Seeing a child about the age of a preschooler at 3 am without any adult with her was surely a shock. Charlie was worried about her and then he had an idea. He had to do something to take the little girl safely back home.
He and the passengers on the bus tried to find out how this had happened. As it turned out, Jill even walked 5 blocks in the rain before she reached the bus stop where she was found. Without hesitation, Charlie called the local police and told them of the little girl.
As Jill sat on the bus, the passengers comforted her and made sure she was okay. As the little girl sat with the other passengers, she shared her mission (使命) that early morning. “All I want is a box of chocolates,” she said.

That wasn’t the first time Hilde had found it hard for people to take her seriously which was mainly because of her age. But she never let that stop her. Hilde continued reporting.
In 2019, Hilde wrote a book for young people, called Hilde Cracks the Case, which is based on stories that Hilde wrote. The book was then turned into a TV show called Home Before Dark. For now, Hilde says she has given up reporting. But her efforts have already inspired people around the world.

8. According to paragraph 1 adults who napped often could ________.

A. Beijing court handles 77 cases of smuggling animal products
