Hangzhou, China — a grand opening ceremony full of Hangzhou characteristics amazed the world on Saturday, as President Xi Jinping announced the 19th Asian Games open.
The opening show helped to express the host’s warm hospitality and its wish to unite the world through sports. Following an opening performance about the autumn equinox (秋分), one of China’s 24 solar terms that celebrates the harvest season, over 50,000 audiences burst into cheers as Xi declared the opening of the Hangzhou Games, making the Zhejiang provincial capital the third Chinese city to host the continental sporting gala, following Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.
Wang Hao president of the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou Organizing Committee, said Hangzhou is honored to play host to such a grand event, which started on September 23rd. Raja Randhir Singh, the acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia, showed appreciation for the Chinese host’s meticulous (细心的) organization in his speech. “You have done a great job in preparing for the Asian Games. The one-year delay due to the pandemic was a pity, but your determination will bear fruit over the next 16 days and you will be rewarded with the most wonderful and successful Asian Games ever,” said Singh.
Supported by new technologies, the Hangzhou ceremony created many historic firsts. For the first time in China, organizers changed from a traditional fireworks show to a virtual display, projected (放映) onto a giant curtain screen the size of nine IMAX screens. For the first time in lighting the main cauldron, hundreds of millions of virtual sparks, each standing for a participant of the online torch relay, formed the shape of a human torchbearer (火炬手), who ran into the stadium (体育馆) to finish the task with the physical relay’s final bearer — Zhejiang native and Olympic champion swimmer, Wang Shun.
The technologies were not just used for the ceremony. During the whole period, zero-emission clean methanol (甲醇) was used for the torches. The electric vehicles were used to transport officials, athletes and the audiences. The devices in the stadiums were specially designed to save energy.

The Silk Road is arguably the most famous long-distance trade route of the ancient world. This passage connected Europe in the West with China in the East, and allowed the exchange of goods, technology, and ideas between the two civilizations. Although merchants could make huge profits travelling the road, it was not without risk.
The main Silk Road started in Chang’an (known today as Xi’an), the early Han capital. Travelers commencing their journey from this city could take a northern route that would take them across China’s northwestern provinces. After this, they would face the Gobi Desert, arguably the greatest danger of the Silk Road.
The Gobi Desert, the largest desert in Asia, consists mainly of rocky, hard earth. This feature made it easier for traders to travel across, compared to sandy deserts like the neighboring Taklamakan Desert. Like other deserts, the Gobi Desert is dry and hot, and therefore the biggest challenge travelers faced was obtaining enough water for themselves as well as for their camels.
So, rest stops were created along the route, allowing travelers to rest, eat and drink. These places also promoted the exchange of goods, and even ideas, amongst the travelers who stopped there. Usually, the rest stops were placed within a day’s journey of each other. In this way, travelers could avoid spending too much time in the desert, which would make them targets for robbers, another danger of the Silk Road.
Once through the Gobi Desert, travelers would continue their journey into Iran, Turkey, and finally Europe. While this part of the journey may have been less dangerous, it is not entirely without its perils (风险).
12. The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to _________.
A. making huge profits B. traveling the Silk Road
C. exchanging goods and ideas D. connecting different civilizations
13. Why was the Gobi Desert easier to cross than other deserts
A. The desert’s surface was easier to walk on.
B. Camels for transportation were easier to find.
C. It was smaller and could be crossed in less time.
D. There were more natural water sources available.
14. What can we guess about the rest stops in the Gobi Desert
A. Travelers were offered free accommodation.
B. They were located around the edges of the desert.
C. They were shared by travelers from different countries.
D. Exchanging goods and ideas there was entirely without risk.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. The origins of the Silk Road.
B. The benefits of the Silk Road.
C. The difficulties faced by Silk Road travelers.
D. The cultural exchanges among Silk Road travelers.

But one day Mike strongly wished to buy such food. He knew he couldn’t persuade his parents to give him money to buy it, so he was upset. At noon that day, his mom was having a nap in the bedroom while his dad was working out of the home. Mike suddenly found his mom’s wallet on the sofa in the living room. Usually, his mom would put the wallet close to her — not this time.
Mike found a good chance to get money. He thought he could secretly take some from his mom’s wallet without letting her discover it. Then, he slowly walked towards the wallet and opened it. There was lots of money. Mike took a few coins and walked out of the house, going directly to a store in his community.
He bought a bag of food that was very peppery and a bottle of iced Coca-cola. Instead of returning home, he hung around outside to enjoy the food and the drink in case his mom discovered it. When he opened the food bag, a strong, hot and sweet smell rushed into his nose. He tasted some: it was delicious. But it was too hot and his mouth seemed to be on fire. However, he didn’t take notice of it. Minutes later, he ate up the bag of junk food and finished the drink. Then he returned home. His mother was still sleeping.
In the afternoon that day, Mike began to feel uncomfortable and wanted to vomit. He felt pain in his stomach. At first, he could stand it.
B They were located around the edges of the desert.
C. They were shared by travelers from different countries.
D. Exchanging goods and ideas there was entirely without risk.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. The origins of the Silk Road.
B. The benefits of the Silk Road.
C. The difficulties faced by Silk Road travelers.
D. The cultural exchanges among Silk Road travelers.

be worth doing sth.
whether...or not固定搭配,意为“是否”,此处whether引导宾语从句,故填whether。
【45题详解】
考查冠词。句意:因此,如果你不确定,仍然想知道巧克力饮食是否真的有效,那么与你的营养师或医生预约是值得的。make an appointment固定搭配,意为“预约”,故填an。

【答案】Dear Smith,
I’m Zhang Ming, a Senior 1 student. Recently, I’ve been busy preparing for my final exam, but unfortunately I find it quite hard to concentrate on my study. So I’m writing to turn to you for help.
I’m encountering some problems which trouble me a lot. First of all, I have to spend so much time on my homework that I can hardly spare any time to take sports. In addition, with the high expectations from the teachers and my parents, I’m always under great stress, which makes it difficult for me to fall asleep every night. As a result, I can’t focus on what the teacher says in class.
Faced with the above problems, I’m anxious to get your help. Could you please offer me some advice on how to deal with these problems
Looking forward to your early reply.
Sincerely yours,
Zhang Ming

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Mike was a seven-year-old kid, his parents usually didn’t give him money because he liked to buy junk food. They knew such food would be harmful to kids’ body.
However, finally, he couldn’t bear it anymore and told his mom that he felt sick. But Mike didn’t tell his mom the truth that he had some hot junk food. Not knowing what was wrong with Mike, his mom was worried.
注意:

Mike realized he should admit what he had done.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】She hurried to drive him to the hospital. On the way, Mike threw up badly. Seeing this, his mom realized something. But at that time Mike was in pain, so she didn’t question him. When seeing a doctor, Mike honestly told the doctor what was wrong with him. After checking his body, the doctor comforted them, saying that they didn’t need to be worried. After getting some medicine, Mike returned home with his mom. Mike took the medicine, and then he felt better.
Mike realized he should admit what he had done. So he told his mom the truth. Hearing it, his mom didn’t seem angry. Instead, she patiently explained to Mike why his behavior was wrong. She told him, “You can ask for it if you really want to eat junk food. But you shouldn’t steal money. You should tell the truth.” That day, Mike learned a big lesson and understood the importance of being honest.
