In 1999, John Smyth, a high-school teacher decided it was time to retire. Together with his wife Helen, he set off on a journey around Australia. But when they returned, John found he missed the classroom, so he spent another eight years doing casual teaching.
Then he heard about a program known as Volunteers for Isolated Students’ Education (VISE), which pairs up energetic people with educational experience, usually retired teachers, with children whose schooling is largely done remotely, because they live too far away from towns and cities to attend regular schools. John grew up in the country and as a kid in the bush, he always dreamed of running with circus, but he didn’t even have much chance to see the circus in person. Therefore he was immediately interested in the program and got a travelling post as a teacher with Stardust Circus.
The lesson timetable was built around the kids performance schedules. “The eight-year-old I tutored was an awesome gymnast who was part of the teeterboard (跷跷板)act, ”he explains. “A big guy would jump on the other side, he would swing up in the air, do a couple of twirls(旋转) and land on his uncle’s shoulders. . . and his uncle was standing on the boy’s father’s shoulders!” The circus still includes some animal acts, including lions, monkeys, horses, goats and pigs. John and his wife Helen found it extraordinary enough to sink into sleep to the sound of lions roaring, but one day the lion-trainer, Matt, gave him a very special privilege, inviting him in to meet four 13-month-old lions in person. While it was understandably a little scary at first, for John it was a never-to-be-forgotten experience, which helped him realize his boyhood dream in his 75th year.
4. Why did John Smyth stay in the Stardust Circus
A. To run the circus.
B. To live far from towns.
C. To educate the children.
D. To conduct a program.
5. What can we learn from the passage
A. Teachers of the VISE program live too far away.
B. Children in the circus are taught at fixed time.
C. John instructed the gymnast’s performance of swinging in the air.
D. The couple enjoyed sleeping with the sound of lions roaring.
6. Which word best describes John’s experience of meeting the little lions
A. Scary. B. Upsetting. C. Boring. D. Memorable.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Working for a Living
B. Returning to School
C. Running with the Circus
D. Travelling with Animals
C
Not sleeping enough or getting a bad night’s sleep over and over makes it hard to control your appetite. And that sets you up for all sorts of health problems, including obesity (肥胖) , heart disease and high blood pressure.
The link between poor sleep and a greater body mass index(BMI) has been shown in study after study, but researchers typically relied on the memories of the participants to record how well they slept.
Sleep apps on fitness trackers smartphones and watches have changed all that. In a new study researchers tracked sleep quality for 120,000 people for up to two years.
The results showed sleep durations (持续时间) and patterns are highly variable between people. Despite that, the study found people with BMIs of 30 or above — which is considered obese by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-had slightly shorter sleep durations and more variable sleep patterns.
It didn’t take much less sleep to see the effect. People with BMIs over 30 only slept about 15 minutes less than those less weighty people.
There were some limitations to the study, naps(午睡) were not included, other health conditions could not be factored in, and people who use wearable tracking devices are typically younger, healthier and from a higher economic status than those who do not wear trackers.
“These are quite pricey devices, and they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The results would need to be validated (确认) by the appropriate FDA-approved devices, and because the study is likely on younger people who are more economically well off, it needs further study whether that really applies to older folks with poor sleep.” said Dasgupta, the associate program director.
However, Dasgupta added, a major plus for the study is that it did monitor people for over two years, and the results corroborated previous research and were “not surprising.”
While we cannot determine the direction of association from our study result, these findings provide further support to the idea that sleep patterns are associated with weight management and overall health.
8. How does the new study differ from previous studies
A. It lasts the longest time in history. B. It uses apps to record participants’ sleep.
C. It specially improves participants’ sleep quality. D. It relied on participants’ memory to record data.
9. What is Dasgupta’s attitude toward the new finding
A. Doubtful B. Shocked C. Cautious D. Dissatisfied
10. What does the underlined word “corroborated” probably mean in Paragraph 8
A. limit B. correct C. confirm D. combine
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. Sleep Quality Varies from Person to Person
B. Sleep Apps Are Widely Used to Monitor Sleep
C. Young People Are Paying More Attention to Obesity
D. Lack of Sleep May Be Possibly Connected with Obesity
D
It could have been anywhere, my first intentionally photo-free journey, but it just happened to be Ethiopia. Photographic equipment can be a great physical burden. It may weigh anything from a few hundred grams to several kilos, depending on how seriously one approaches the business of picture-taking. Yet the real burden of photography is mental, not physical; it is the feeling of needing to take photographs, that because you have a camera you must use it.
In the first few days of camera-less travel, there are certainly moments of frustration at letting one great photograph after another go past, but having no camera, and thus being unable to take photographs, surprisingly soon stops the urge to do so. Very quickly, scenes become appreciated for what they are, rather than for the photographs they would have made.
Climbing up the western wall of the Great Rift Valley, on the way to the capital, Addis Ababa, the road emerges from a tunnel onto open, grassy plains — a small piece of uncharacteristically undomesticated countryside, with an even more uncharacteristic population of wild animals. They looked magnificent in the tearing wind, and through binoculars (双筒望远镜) they could be absorbed at leisure — theirs and mine. And thus unseen, I watched them play, free from concerns as to how close I could risk going with my camera without losing the very moment I sought to capture.
Exciting though stalking (跟踪) wild creatures can be, the photographer must obviously stalk as much out of sight as possible, thus being denied any chance of actually watching them. The photographer’s mind is effectively stopped from experiencing any more than the photographic possibilities of the scene. At eye level, the camera not only creates a physical barrier but also isolates the photographer from the joyful reality of the subject, and from everywhere else around them too. Then comes the climax, the press of the button, the pull of the trigger (快门), before more stalking, more photographs and, inevitably, the stalking too far which frightens the animals to flight. The difference between looking in order to photograph and actually seeing what is there is never more distinct than when taking pictures of animals, to the extent that the two become almost mutually exclusive. There is time only for deciding the best way to take the photograph, before addressing more practical technicalities — how to keep the minibus’s wheel out of the shot of lions, or get enough depth of field so all the flamingos (火烈鸟) on the lake are in focus at once.
12. According to the first paragraph, what is the main problem that photographers face while travelling
A. Moving their heavy equipment about
B. Locating places to purchase batteries.
C. Trying to get the best possible shots.
D. Being under pressure to take photographs.
13. The writer suggests in the second paragraph that people who choose to leave their cameras at home ________.
A. conclude that the decision was unrealistic
B. rapidly lose the desire to take any photographs
C. come to consider previous trips as unsatisfactory
D. appreciate the excellence of other people’s photos
14. What does the writer suggest about the animals he sees
A. They were too far away to be usefully observed.
B. They were surprisingly unaffected by the closeness of humans.
C. They might have been enjoying the situation for more than he was.
D. They might have become alarmed by the presence of a photographer.
15. The writer questions the value of stalking animals because a photographer ________.
A. can cause the animals to behave aggressively towards people
B. may become too uncomfortable to take reasonable shots
C. may not be able to appreciate the situation fully
D. can easily become distracted from his task

Effective communication can make you an effective leader and success can come much more easily. It is very important to be a confident and efficient communicator so that others can understand you. However, in order to become an effective communicator, you need to be an effective listener first.
To be a good listener, you need effective listening skills, which will help you.
Understand other peoples' point of view. However, most people generally overlook the skill of listening. Actually, communication is never a complete process if you are only a good speaker without being a good listener. You may be very good at expressing your thoughts effectively. But if you are not good at understanding other people's point of view, it will never be considered effective communication.
Usually, speaking is considered an active process and listening is claimed to be a passive process. Listening, however, is undoubtedly an active process, too. It doesn't just mean sitting in front of someone and staring at their eyes. In order to understand someone better, you need to analyze their thoughts and words. Additionally, you need to show that you are listening. For instance, you can say "I see," "go on" or just nod your head. Of course, in the case of disagreement, you do not necessarily have to do that. You can also ask questions if you have problems understanding that person's perspective. Asking questions will not only improve your listening habits but also make the other person realize that they are being heard.
Too often, we attach great importance to the skill of speaking; however, most of us do not value the skill of listening very highly. Now is the time for you to break the old stereotype (刻板印象)and follow the new trend, which is a contributing factor to effective communication.

6. Which word best describes John’s experience of meeting the little lions
A. Scary. B. Upsetting. C. Boring. D. Memorable.
7. What is the best title for the text

Sleep apps on fitness trackers, smartphones and watches have changed all that.
There were some limitations to the study naps(午睡) were not included, other health conditions could not be factored in, and people who use wearable tracking devices are typically younger, healthier and from a higher economic status than those who do not wear trackers.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. D

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Sleep apps on fitness trackers, smartphones and watches have changed all that. In a new study researchers tracked sleep quality for 120,000 people for up to two years.(健身追踪器、智能手机和手表上的睡眠应用改变了这一切。在一项新的研究中,研究人员对12万人的睡眠质量进行了长达两年的跟踪调查)”可知,新研究的不同在于研究人员使用睡眠应用程序来进行记录。故选B。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第七段““These are quite pricey devices, and they are not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. The results would need to be validated (确认) by the appropriate FDA-approved devices, and because the study is likely on younger people who are more economically well off, it needs further study whether that really applies to older folks with poor sleep.” said Dasgupta, the associate program director.(“这些都是相当昂贵的设备,而且它们没有得到美国食品和药物管理局的批准。研究结果需要得到FDA批准的适当设备的验证,而且由于这项研究可能是针对经济状况较好的年轻人,因此还需要进一步研究,这是否真的适用于睡眠质量差的老年人。项目副主任达斯古普塔说)”可知,达斯古普塔认为这次研究有一些局限性,因此是否符合老年人的情况还有待进一步观察。由此推知,他的态度是谨慎的。故选C。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“The link between poor sleep and a greater body mass index(BMI) has been shown in study after study, but researchers typically relied on the memories of the participants to record how well they slept.(一项又一项的研究表明,睡眠质量差和身体质量指数(BMI)较高之间存在联系,但研究人员通常依靠参与者的记忆来记录他们的睡眠质量)”可知,以前的研究已经证明了睡眠不足和体重之间存在着联系,再根据划线词后文“previous research and were “not surprising.””推断这次的研究结果和之前的研究结果是一致的,进一步证实了以前的研究结果。故划线词意思是“证实”。故选C。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段“The results showed sleep durations (持续时间) and patterns are highly variable between people. Despite that, the study found people with BMIs of 30 or above — which is considered obese by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-had slightly shorter sleep durations and more variable sleep patterns.(结果显示,人与人之间的睡眠持续时间和模式差异很大。尽管如此,研究发现,BMI指数在30或以上的人——美国疾病控制与预防中心认为这是肥胖——睡眠时间略短,睡眠模式更多变)”和最后一段“While we cannot determine the direction of association from our study result, these findings provide further support to the idea that sleep patterns are associated with weight management and overall health.(虽然我们不能从我们的研究结果中确定关联的方向,但这些发现为睡眠模式与体重管理和整体健康相关的观点提供了进一步的支持)”可知,文章主要介绍新的研究再一次证实睡眠问题和肥胖以及其他疾病有关。故D项“睡眠不足可能与肥胖有关”最符合文章标题。故选D。

A. conclude that the decision was unrealistic
B. rapidly lose the desire to take any photographs
C. come to consider previous trips as unsatisfactory
D. appreciate the excellence of other people’s photos
