Entry requirements
Your poetry can be laid out as you wish, as we understand that form often relates to the effect of a poem. However, please be sure to stick to a maximum of 3 pages per poem.
Submission guidelines
We accept works, written in English, from anywhere in the world. But we don’t accept works previously published elsewhere.
Writers over the age of thirteen are welcome to participate. Please note that if you’re aged 13-16 and your work is selected for publication, we’ll require a signature from a parent or a guardian.
Please include your name and contact information in your cover letter only and remove any identifying information from both the submitted work and the file name.
We edit every piece accepted for publication whether your work is selected for publication through our online blog or in our print magazine. For this cooperative process we’ll pair you with one of our senior editors. All our editors have been trained to help guide the development of each piece to reach its fullest potential in keeping with the author’s vision. This doesn’t mean we’ll take on a wild jumble of words and half-formed thoughts.
Notes
The contest reserves the right to NOT award a winner if the submissions don’t reach a publishable standard. In this case, the winner won’t be announced. Although this has rarely come to pass in our six-year publishing history, our top priority must remain with the quality of the work we publish.

James Warren rides the public bus a lot in his hometown of Denver. Then in January, Warren spotted a woman waiting for a bus. There was no seating at the stop—and no sidewalk—so she sat in the dirt. So he decided to build a bench.
“I just took some scrap wood and went to town,” Warren said. He then realized that one bench was far from enough. There are more than 9,000 bus stops in the Denver metro area, many of them without seating or shelter. Warren carves “Be kind” on each one—each made from scrap wood he finds in construction waste containers.
“I met some ladies the other day who were talking about how they used the benches every day,” Warren added. “It fills me up. It’s air in my tires.”
Warren said many people have hopped on his bench—making bandwagon, which has motivated him to build more. “I’ve had a lot of people reach out to me on Twitter,” he said. “Some people have wanted to come and help me.” Others saw Warren’s work in the local news and decided to take out their tools, too. People also started donating supplies. “That puts me over the moon,” Warren said.
Nica Cave, 26, a Denver mobility advocate, said, “The lack of infrastructure, shelter and seating at transit stops marginalizes(边缘化) those who rely on public transit. People like Warren are really encouraging me to see how people are willing to use their own time and resources to provide these much-needed services.” Cave added that she hopes the local government will see Warren’s benches and get involved.
That is precisely Warren’s goal. Warren—who is planning to organize a bench-building workshop—said his hope is that his benches make a difference in his community and even beyond. “My goal is to make people’s lives just a little bit better.” Warren said.
4. What do we know about Warren’s benches
A. They are carved with his name. B. They can be found at any bus stop.
C. They are specially designed for women. D. They are made of recycled materials.
5. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 mean
A. It is the source of my effort. B. My tires are almost flat.
C. I need to fill air into my tires. D. Praise is the best reward for me.
6. What made Warren feel happy
A. The good sales of the benches. B. The assistance from other people.
C. The comments on Twitter. D. The awards from the local government.
7. What is Warren’s true purpose of organizing the workshop
A. To earn more money to live a better life.
B. To set up his own bench-building workshop.
C. To encourage people to use more public transit.
D. To make people live a little bit better.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. B 7. D

There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chat bot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers the thread of your dialogue, using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses. It derives its answers from huge volumes of information on the Internet. ChatGPT is built on top of the OpenAI GPT-3 family of large language models and is fine-tuned (a method of transfer learning) using both supervised and reinforcement learning (监督和强化学习).
You can ask ChatGPT anything, like explaining physics, asking for birthday party ideas and getting programming help. Perhaps it’s not smart enough to replace all humans yet, but it can be creative, and its answers can sound downright authoritative. A few days after its launch, more than I million people were trying out ChatGPT. UBS analyst Lloyd Walmsley estimated in February 2023 that ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly users in January, accomplishing in 2 months what took TikTok about 9 months and Instagram two and a half years.
ChatGPT is free to use at the moment because it is still in its research phase. But when too many people hop onto the server, it overloads and can’t process your request. It just means you should try visiting the site at a later time when fewer people are trying to access it. If you want to skip the wait and have reliable access, there is an option for you. As of Feb. 1, 2023, OpenAI has aChatGPT pro plan, ChatGPT Plus, which allows users to have general access even during peak times. This service does come at a cost of $20/month.
However, ChatGPT can not replace Google. ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence robot that provides solutions to your questions, but Google is a search engine in which you can search for as much information as possible. ChatGPT has limited knowledge due to its programming but Google has unlimited knowledge which is updated every day.
8. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about ChatGPT
A. Its language model. B. Its working theory.
C. Its design inspiration. D. Its development process.
9. Why does the author list figures in paragraph 3
A. To show the popularity of ChatGPT.
B. To stress the high cost of inventing ChatGPT.
C. To present the creativity of artificial intelligence.
D. To prove the necessity of developing tools for chatting online.
10. What is ChatGPT Plus intended for
A. Providing solutions to any question.
B. Guiding users to experience free services.
C. Searching for a huge amount of information.
D. Giving users priority access during peak hours.
11. What is a limitation of ChatGPT compared with Google
A. It operates based on limited data.
B. It needs longer to provide solutions.
C. It can only update information at a fixed time.
D. It may provide replies unrelated to the questions.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. D 11. A

Every Sunday at 2 p.m., Marisela Godinez, the owner of El Mesón Tequilería, a Mexican restaurant in Austin, Texas, used to fill a 12-gallon bucket, plus another half-bucket, with leftover food from the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat brunch buffet. “We threw out a lot of food,” she said.
But a few months ago Ms. Godinez signed up to use an app called Too Good To Go. Now, 10 customers pick up “surprise bags” of her leftovers for $5.99 each, and she sends far fewer leftovers to the landfill.
Too Good To Go has tried to gamify (游戏化) buying leftover food. In the United States, customers in 12 cities can browse restaurants and stores, then reserve “surprise bags” that typically cost about $4 to $6 and contain food that would have been originally priced at roughly three times that amount. The bags can be picked up at a certain time window.
Around the country, apps that connect customers to businesses with leftover food have begun to spread. The concept is simple: Restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of food every day. Rather than trash it, apps like Too Good To Go and Flashfood help businesses sell it at a reduced price. They claim that the businesses and buyers are helping the environment because the food would otherwise become food waste, a big contributor to climate change.
Food production itself is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for between a quarter and a third of global emissions. Each step of the process — growing, harvesting, moving, processing, packaging, storing and preparing food — releases carbon dioxide, methane(甲烷) and other planet-warming gases. When the food is wasted, so are all those emissions. In addition, once unused food reaches landfills, it breaks down and releases more methane.
According to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, at least a few items for sale there aren’t necessarily what buyers might think of as “food waste.” A beverage (饮料) company owner George White said he not only used the app to sell discontinued products, but also sold new flavors there in hopes of attracting new customers.
12. Why did Ms. Godinez use Too Good To Go
A. To advertise her delicate dishes. B. To reduce customers’ complaints.
C. To provide a range of recipes. D. To avoid wasting leftover buffet.
13. What can Too Good To Go’s users do
A. They can watch the live stream. B. They can order whatever they want.
C. They can pick a “surprise” food bargain. D. They can deliver less trash to landfill.
14. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about
A. The steps of processing food contribute much to the planet.
B. Food production is closely related to green gas emission.
C. Global warming will be worsened by using the app.
D. Unused food will take years to break down.
15. What can be inferred from George White’s words
A. He is taking advantage of the app to make more profits.
B. He doesn’t think selling food waste on the app is necessary.
C. He thinks the app is an environmentally-friendly game.
D. He can’t help picking a lot of “surprise bags” himself.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. B 15. A

【14题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第五段“Food production itself is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for between a quarter and a third of global emissions. 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要围绕如何管理时间而展开。
【16题详解】
由上文“How much time does it take you to sleep, eat and commute every day (你每天花多少时间睡觉、吃饭和通勤?)”可知,设空处所填的句子应该是回答前句,连接后句给出事实的结果。而F项These basic activities take up an enormous part of your day.(这些基本活动占据了你一天中很大一部分时间。)符合语境,其中These basic activities和上文sleep, eat and commute 对应。 故选F项。
【17题详解】

【18题详解】
由下文“This is about the skill of organization. It refers to arranging your personal space at home. So when doing your homework, you are in a tidy place, free from distractions. This includes putting away your mobile phone until you have finished everything that needs to be done.(这是关于组织的技巧。它指的是在家里安排你的个人空间。所以,当你做作业时,你在一个整洁的地方,没有分心的事情。这包括把你的手机收起来,直到你完成了所有需要做的事情。)”可知,这段主要讲怎样创造对自己有利的条件。而A项Create favourable conditions.(创造有利条件。)符合语境,其中“arranging”,“a tidy place”,“free from distractions”和“putting away”,与A项“Create favourable conditions”相呼应。故选A项。

(你应该根据活动的紧迫性和重要性对其进行分类。)”以及后句“Then you can focus on your objective and stick to it.(然后你可以专注于你的目标并坚持下去。)”可知,设空处所填内容应为将活动进行分类的好处,所以D项This classification will help determine your priority.(此分类将有助于确定您的优先级。)符合语境。其中This classification 与上文classify对应。故选D项。
【20题详解】
由上文“Once you start taking little steps every day to plan, organize and prioritize the activities you intend to devote your energy, skills and talents to, you can spare more time to stay with family and friends, pursue a hobby or work on personal development. (一旦你开始每天采取一些小步骤来计划、组织和优先安排你打算投入精力、技能和才能的活动,你就可以腾出更多的时间与家人和朋友呆在一起,追求爱好或致力于个人发展。)”可知,这里主要讲一旦提前规划、创造环境并对所做事情进行优化排序,人们将收获时间管理带来的好处。所以G项You will end up reaping (收获) the rewards of time management.(你最终会收获时间管理的回报。)符合语境,对上文有总结作用。故选G项。

I’m sorry to hear that you are having some health problems due to your unhealthy eating habits. Now I’m writing to share my experience and my suggestions.
When I’m in junior high school, I used to eat large amounts of unhealthy food, which led to my poor health. I had to change my eating habits and gradually I regained my health. So in my opinion, I suggest you improve your eating habits. To start with, you should cut out junk food, as it does great harm to your body. Secondly, cut down on food rich in fat and sugar and eat more food with higher quantities of protein and fibre. Furthermore, it’s better to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables, which provide you with enough vitamins and help you fight diseases.
I hope my suggestions will be helpful and you’ll keep fit as soon as possible. Best wishes!

57. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When a tornado touched down in a small town nearby, many families were left completely ruined. One Sunday, a particular picture especially touched me. A young woman stood in front of an entirely ruined home.A young boy, seven or eight years old, stood at her side, eyes downcast. Clutching (紧握) at her skirt was a tiny girl who stared into the camera, eyes wide with confusion and fear. The article that went with the picture gave the clothing sizes of each family member. With growing interest, I noticed that their sizes closely matched ours. This would be a good opportunity to teach my children to help those less fortunate than themselves. I taped the picture of the young family to our refrigerator, explaining their difficulty to my seven-year-old twins, Brad and Brett, and to three-year-old Meghan.
“These poor people now have nothing,” I said. “We’ll share what we have with them.”
I brought three large boxes and placed them on the living room floor, encouraging the boys to go through their toys and donate some of their less favourite things. Meghan watched seriously, as the boys and I filled one of the boxes with canned goods and foods that they no longer needed.
Meghan walked up to Lucy, her much-loved doll, and hugged it tightly to her chest. She stopped in front of the box, gave her doll a final kiss, and then laid her gently on top of the other toys.
“Oh, honey,” I said. “You don’t have to give Lucy. You love her so much.”
Meghan nodded seriously, “Lucy makes me happy, Mommy. Maybe she’ll make another little girl happy, too.”
注意:1.续写词数应为90左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
The boys had watched, open-mouthed, when their sister placed her favourite doll in the box.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】The boys had watched, open-mouthed, when their sister placed her favourite doll in the box. Inspired by their sister, the boys immediately went to their rooms and came back to the living room, carrying their favourite toys and saying gently, “Mum, we also hope our favourite toys can make the boy happy.” All of a sudden, I realized that the boys had understood what little Meghan meant. I was so touched that I pulled all three of them into my arms, tears in my eyes. Then it occurred to me that I should replace the old coat I had put in the box with a new one I loved. That day, my little Meghan taught us a good lesson that the true spirit of donating is to give with our heart and love.

There’s a new AI bot: ChatGPT, and you’d better pay attention, even if you aren’t into artificial intelligence. The tool is an AI chat bot system that OpenAI released in November 2022 to show off and test what a very large, powerful AI system can achieve.
ChatGPT remembers the thread of your dialogue using previous questions and answers to inform its next responses.
10. What is ChatGPT Plus intended for
A Providing solutions to any question.
D

第二节 读后续写(满分15分)
注意:1.续写词数应为90左右;
2.请按如下格式作答。
The boys had watched, open-mouthed, when their sister placed her favourite doll in the box.
