Through some efforts, rescuers cleaned up the ruins which blocked her. Under her body lay her baby, who was covered by a small red quilt (棉被). He was about 3 or 4 months’ old. Since well protected by his mother’s body, he was safe. He was in a deep sleep when the rescuer carried him out, and his lovely and peaceful face warmed everyone around him. The doctor, along with the rescuing team, took the baby out of the quilt to check if the baby was all right, and he found there was a mobile phone in the quilt. The doctor looked at the screen, a written message was already there: “My dear baby if you could live, don’t forget how much I love you.” As a doctor, he experienced much of this type of separation; but at this moment, he cried. Many people just see crows (乌鸦) as a natural clean-up crew-eating insects, dead animals or food in trash cans. But researchers have found that crows are not only playful but also social and intelligent. They use tools to solve problems, and they remember faces for years and copy sounds they hear.
“Crows are always testing their environment,” said John Marzluff, University of Washington professor of wildlife science. “Anything that looks possibly edible, they will taste it.” This trait (特点) has led to interesting scientific findings. Some crows use sticks to gain hard-to-get treats. In other experiments, they learned to drop stones into narrow containers to raise water to a level where they can drink it or reach a floating treat inside
Crows are social, living in large extended families of more than a dozen munication is key to their survival. Many calls are used-each having a different message. For example, they have separate warning calls for cats, dogs and people. Some crows even imitate the sounds of other animals and people.
Marzluff did several experiments to determine whether wild crows remember human faces. In one, researchers wearing masks caught seven crows around the campus and banded them. After setting them free, researchers found that regular passers-by got no reaction, but as soon as anyone wearing the same mask passed by, the crows made loud warning calls-even years later. Never be mean to a crow. They not only remember faces but teach their offspring who to beware of (当心). They also remember those who were kind to them and pass that information along, too, often bringing gifts of rocks or other small objects as a thank-you.

Brooke wanted a toy and some sugar cookies. So the 6-year-old asked Alexa to get them. Alexa wasn’t her mom or babysitter. It was a voice-activated (声控的) home helper powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Alexa comes with the Amazon Echo device (回波装置). And it made Brooke’s wishes come true. After being reported on TV, Alexa devices in many listeners’ homes woke up and tried to order toys!
Alexa isn’t the only AI willing to order up treats for you. Apple Homepod has Siri, Google Home has its Assistant, and the upcoming (即将来临的) Galaxy Home device will have Bixby. People who own these devices use them mainly for listening to music, checking the weather, and setting timers. According to a report from The Information, people don’t often do voice shopping. They do it mainly to order simple things like paper towels. But many experts predict a boom (繁荣) in voice shopping in the near future.
Convenience is the main benefit of voice shopping. You can shout out an order as soon as you think of it, even if you’re cooking or driving. Besides, people who are unable to use a keyboard or mouse can shop without help.
But voice shopping has its disadvantages. Unwanted things aren’t the biggest problem. It’s usually very easy to cancel an order or return items. The surprising thing is that these assistants are always listening. They have to be able to respond when you want them. So they listen for “Alexa” or “OK Google” or another command. When they hear it, they start recording the conversation. Some have worried about what happens to these recordings. Should companies be allowed to use them to lean about people’s shopping habits What if someone hacks (非法侵入) the device What if someone hacks smart TVs to turn them into spies that listen all the time
32. What is Alexa
A. A TV reporter. B. A friend of Brooke.
C. A kind of device. D. A cookie maker.
33. What can you learn from Paragraph 2
A. Alexa is the best Al device
B. Voice shopping may have a bright future.
C. People use Bixby mainly for listening to music.
D. People buy various things through voice shopping.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards Alexa devices
A. Optimistic. B. Doubtful. C. Objective. D. Negative.
35. What column (专栏) may the passage be taken from in the newspaper
A. Education. B. Business. C. Entertainment. D. Technology.

When Thanksgiving Day was approaching, my primary school decided to celebrate it by presenting shows like dancing and singing that all students could join in. Parents would also be invited to watch.
One afternoon, the schoolmaster called me into his office. He said with a smile, “Nancie, could you write a poem for the festival and read it during the coming event ” “Sure!” Excitedly, I had loved poetry since my fifth grade. I was fascinated by poems for it is an amazing thing to convey feelings through them. When my first poem was published, I was known to my friends and teachers as the class poet.
I left the schoolmaster’s office that afternoon, feeling quite happy. Then for weeks, I worked for my poem, carefully designing the content, structure and sound. I practiced reciting it aloud every day.
When the evening for the event finally came, I was ready. Well, I was ready until I looked around and realized how many people there were in the school hall. How could I present my poem in front of more than 400 people I was just a seventh-grader! No one would take my work seriously What was worse, I had never spoken in front of a huge crowd before. I sat in my chair, hoping I could disappear. Maybe they would forget I was supposed to read.
“Hey, Nancie, I saw your name in the program. Good luck!” my little brother’s voice rose as he took his seat a few rows down with his class. I nodded, struggling to keep calm. I knew my parents were somewhere in the hall. Before long, the lights faded, the crowd quieted, and the schoolmaster took the stage to introduce the list of the shows. Mine was at the end of the list. So I had to sit through an hour of absolute anxiety.
It wasn’t until the students from the fourth grade were singing that my teacher brought me downstairs next to the stage. My mind was blank. Then suddenly, I was on stage with the bright white lights blinding my view of the audience. When I walked to the microphone in the center of the stage, I somehow tripped over (绊倒) something. And I stupidly fell down. All of the kids burst into laughter.

第四部分 写作
第一节 I Tasted a sense of success
Last month, my English teacher told us about an English speech competition. Encouraged by my teacher and classmates, I signed up for it. I made full use of my spare time to write and practice the speech until I was confident enough to take the stage. In the competition, I spoke fluently and confidently before a large audience and five judges, and I won first place. This experience gave me a chance to taste a sense of success and built up my confidence in public speaking.
第二节
Para 1: I was about to run away when my teacher came up to me. He joked I fell due to my eagerness to bow to the audience. His humor helped remove the embarrassment. Then he motivated the audience to give me encouragement. Feeling less nervous, I took the microphone and cleared my voice before reading the title. Surprisingly, my voice sounded clear and loud. The hall silenced. I continued reading, with words coming out in the right order and lines flowing together appropriately
Para 2: When I finished my reading, the hall was silent at first. I swallowed hard. Maybe no one loved my poem. Then out of the silence there was clapping and cheering. I dared to look for my parents in the sea of faces, and found my mother wiping away tears and my father smiling. With a light-headed feeling and a happy smile, I bowed slightly and walked off the stage. I greeted each person I met when going back to my seat, with relief and gratefulness spreading warmly through my body.
