Vanuatu is an island nation in the South Pacific. It is one of the smallest countries in the world. But for those who are interested in adventure and sport, there is a lot to do. Vanuatu’s islands offer visitors two of the most exciting and dangerous activities in the world: volcano (火山) surfing and land diving.
Volcano Surfing
On Tanna Island, Mount Yasur rises 300 meters into the sky. Yasur is an active volcano, and it erupts (喷发) almost every day, sometimes several times a day. For centuries, people have climbed this mountain to visit the top. Recently, people have also started climbing Yasur to surf the volcano. In some ways, volcano surfing is like surfing in the sea, but in other ways it is very different.
Land Diving
Most people are familiar with bungee jumping, but do you know bungee jumping started on Pentecost Island in Vanuatu and is almost fifteen centuries old The activity, first called land diving, is part of a religious ceremony (仪式). A man ties tree vines (树藤) to his legs. He then jumps head-first from a high tower to touch the earth with the top of his head — without breaking the vine. Every spring, island natives (men only) still take part in this amazing activity.
21. According to the passage, Mount Yasur ________.
A. is no longer active B. is on Pentecost Island
C. erupts almost every day D. rises 800 meters into the sky

In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted (编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.
“I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath,” I said
My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, she settled on the sofa and dialed. For a while, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert ” My mother grasped one of my hands and gave it a slight squeeze. “I’m the only person she talked to today.”
It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines that ensured housebound seniors remained connected to the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.
24. What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors
A. To care about their life. B. To know what they eat for dinner.
C. To make them feel less lonely. D. To teach them how to make desserts.
25. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. They will talk all the time on the phone.
B. They will blame others’ wrong doings.
C. They will be tired of listening to others.
D. They will make you feel really satisfied.
26. What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. The author started to telephone seniors as her mother.
B. The author realized the value of her mother’s efforts.
C. The author’s mother preferred to live alone.
D. The author’s mother remained connected to the world.
27. What is the suitable title for the passage
A. Call your parents often B. Mother’s evenings
C. Mother’s new project D. Nightly calls, lifeline calls
C

What is the Best Way to Learn a Language
There is no “best” way to learn a language, because everyone learns slightly differently. 36 Here are some of the most frequent recommendations.
◆Watch foreign language TV and movies
Not everyone has the opportunity to be exposed to the environment where the native language is spoken or to speak to native speakers. TV and movies offer a good chance to hear native speakers use the language. 37 Watching their movies and TV shows helps you better understand their culture.
◆Get out of your comfort zone
This is a lesson for life, not just for learning a language! Get out there and do something that scares you Talk to a foreigner in their language. 38 Write someone a message in their language. Whatever that zone is where you feel safe and relaxed and easy, get out of that zone because you can learn nothing from it. Push yourself and you’ll see that it’s not so bad in this world.
◆ 39
Don’t think of language as a tool, think of it as a musical instrument. When you learn three chords on guitar, you can play hundreds of songs. Words are the same. For example, take the word “real”, and look at its different forms: real, really, realise, realistic, realism, realist, unreal…
◆Make mistakes, it’s fine, it’s even great
Shyness and fear of making mistakes is common. However, nobody cares if you make mistakes. When you speak a foreign language, everyone knows it’s not your mother tongue and they’re already impressed that you’re speaking it at all. 40
A. Avoid making mistakes
B. TV and movies solve that problem easily
C. Don’t just memorize words, play with them
D. Order food from a French restaurant in French
E. Talk, make mistakes, fall down, get back up, that’s life
F. Besides, learning a language is a doorway into another culture
G. However, some methods appear to be more effective than others

People often have a tough time dealing with their feelings of disappointment. That is when you should give them time and understanding and he or she just might come around before long.
I remember talking with my friend Avery about the coming school play Alices Adventure in Wonderland, which we both applied for. Avery had a talent for acting and she was anxious for playing Alice while for me I didn’t care what part I played as long as I would be in. However, when character list was posted, we were surprised to find that I got the part of Alice and Avery was chosen to act the rabbit. I guessed it was because I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition (试演). But that situation really didn’t occur to me.
Then I asked Avery, “Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines ” “You mean, practice your lines ” Avery replied, not even looking at me. “No, thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.” I continued to ask if it would be OK for next week but her answer was negative and full of anger.
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me on getting the lead role, they asked how I felt. “Well, I can’t understand.” I said and told them about Avery’s reaction and I believed that she pretty much threw away our friendship.
“Hmm,” said my dad. “Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend ” “Dad’s right,” added my mom. “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious (羡慕的) and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. She’ll come around.”
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. I practised my lines but I knew I needed some help since my voice was not expressive enough. Day by day, Avery’s attitude seemed softened. As the rehearsal (彩排) day was near, I made a decision.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节
One day after school in the rehearsal room, I approached Avery. “Hey, Avery,” I said. “I was wondering if you could help me with my lines. I know you’re busy, but I really need your help.” Avery looked up at me and smiled. “Sure, I’d be happy to help.” We spent the next hour going over my lines and she gave me some great advice on how to make my performance more expressive. I was so grateful for her help and I could tell that she was happy to be able to help me.
Then came the big day. We both performed our parts perfectly and the audience was thrilled. After the show, Avery and I hugged each other and thanked each other for our help. I was so glad that I had given her time and understanding, and that she had come around. From then on, we were even better friends than before.
