The Wampanoag language was not dead. To call it dead would be an insult to the ancestors who left it for future generations as a way to communicate and a way to teach. But it was “unspoken” until linguist Jessie “Little Doe” Bair d brought it back. Her project’s Wampanoag dictionary holds more than 11,000 entries.
Words on paper are not a language. A language lives through the people who speak it. So Baird founded the W pan ak Language Reclamation Project. She teaches community classes and family camps. Kids in grade school and high school have the opportunity to learn the language.
The Wampanoags have lived for 12,000 years in Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island. When the Pilgrims met the first Indigenous people, those were the Wampanoags. The English settlers brought disease that killed about two-thirds of the Wampanoags. There once were 69 tribes in the nation; now there are three. Baird is a citizen of the Mashpee tribe. Her ancestors left a key to their language. They translated the King James Bible into Wampanoag. They left hundreds of document s in their written alphabet(字母表).
Baird describes a vision she had where her ancestors helped her see it was time to bring the language home. She began her research, which led her to a graduate degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT), where she learned from and worked with other linguists. In 2010, she was named a MacArthur Foundation Fellow, earning a “genius grant” to further her work.
“It’s incredibly difficult to reclaim a language, even more so when there are no speakers alive, and even more so when you’re driving 90 minutes a day, each way, to attend graduate school, with four small children at home.”
“I might have been afraid to do the work had I known that,” Baird says with a laugh now. “But I didn’t, and so here we are.”
24. What is the situation of the Wampanoag language
A. It has entirely gone by now. B. It is a compulsory course in schools.
C. It is being brought back to life. D. It has got well-recognized in the USA.
25. What may cause the downfall of Wampanoag
A. The wide use of English in the new land.
B. The sharp reduced population of Wampanoag.
C. The economic devopment of Wampanoag.
D. The shortage of reference books on the language.
26. What’s the key element of saving the Wampanoag language
A. The materials ancestors left lay the foundation.
B. The local linguists lend a timely hand.
C. Children are asked to learn the language.
D. The government gives the financial support.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Jessie Baird
A. Independent and adaptable. B. Considerate and ambitious.
C. Intelligent and kind-hearted. D. Determined and responsible.

There in every postcard-perfect picture of Greece, a bright red, green and blue boat can be seen in the sea transporting tourists to an unknown beach. Petros Tzevelekos, a fisherman from Greece, sits on a bench in front of the pier(突堤)in North Evia with a sad expression. Just a few years ago, his own kaiki was tied there. Every day, before dawn, he would climb aboard the boat to go fishing to make his living.
These handmade wooden masterpieces have witnessed the country’s long seafaring tradition for centuries, which is an important part of Greek heritage. Sadly, however, Petros Tzevelekos cannot do it anymore, because his beloved kaiki was smashed to pieces in front of his eyes. Tzevelekos’ beloved boat was one of the about 13,000 boats which have been destroyed since 1994, after a European Union directive called for the destruction of the small wooden fishing boats. Hundreds of Greece’s beautiful vessels have ended up in scraps in landfills. In addition to the great damage to the many Greeks who make a living by fishing, the directive also threatens the centuries-long traditional craft of boat-building. It led to the extinction of related boat-building professions which for decades fed and educated Greek families on remote islands and at coastal villages.
This is the same country that has Nobel Prize(1979)winning poet Odysseas Elytis, who summed up all that Greece was in five verses(诗句):
If you take Greece apart,
In the end you will be left with
an olive tree, a vineyard and a boat...
which means that with these items
you can rebuild Greece...
In 2018, the Save Kaiki Campaign was launched in Greece as an effort to stop the destruction of these treasures. I can only remind that what made Greece the highly sought-after destination it is today was its fishing villages on the islands and the kaiki on the sea.
28. Why does the author mention the Greek fisherman in the first paragraph
A. To display the Greeks’ daily life. B. To introduce the topic of the text.
C. To support his conclusion. D. To show the beautiful scenery of Greece.
29. What’s the author’s attitude to the EU’s decision
A. Disapproving. B. Supportive. C. Positive. D. Unknown.
30. What does Odysseas’ poem indicate
A. The main industry of Greece. B. The natural scenery of Greece.
C. The status of the boat in Greece. D. The rapid development of Greece.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Greece’s Postcards Win Tourists’ Favor
B. Greek Traditional Boats Catch World Attention
C. Old Fishing Boats Bring Life Back to Greek Villages
D. Time to Save Greece’s Handmade Wooden Boats
D
This winter, the U. S. state of California received unusually large amounts of rain and snow. Now, people worry that some areas will flood as the snow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains melts.
Ron Caetano is preparing to leave in case his community, called the Island District, floods. More than 100 years ago, the Island District area was under a large lake named Tulare Lake. At one time, Tulare Lake was the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi River. But reservoirs(水库)and watering systems for agriculture caused it to disappear. However, in very rainy years, farmland can still get covered with water.
Experts say reservoirs near the area will likely receive three times more water than they can hold this year. That means officials must increase the amount of water they release(释放)from the reservoirs. If too much water is released, the area might flood.
The Island District has organized a community network to help prepare for floods. People are placing sandbags close to elderly neighbors’ houses to block possible flooding. And they are looking at reports from water officials, county officials, and from each other.
California has had very dry weather in recent years. Both cities and farm communities acclaimed this year’s winter rains. If the weather gets warmer slowly, the snow will not melt quickly and there may be little or no flooding. But if the weather gets hot quickly, that will bring trouble from too much melting snow.
Officials announced plans to close parts of Yosemite National Park because of threats of flooding. The park is about 270 kilometers east of San Francisco in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Nicholas Pinter is with the University of California, Davis Center for Watershed Sciences. He said the lake’s size has always changed because of California’s weather. He described the surrounding area this way. “It has been an engineering problem all along,” he said. “This is a bathtub(浴缸)with no way out.”
32. What made Tulare Lake disappear
A. Lack of rainfall. B. Natural disasters.
C. Climate warming. D. Human behaviors.
33. What does the underlined word “acclaimed” mean in Paragraph 5
A. Feared. B. Prevented. C. Welcomed. D. Stored.
34. What might people of California hope to happen
A. The weather will gradually get warm. B. The government can help them escape.
C. There will be more hot days. D. Officials won’t let off water.
35. What can we infer from Nicholas Pinter’s words
A. It is easy to keep the snow water. B. It is difficult to deal with the flood.
C. The surrounding area is unfit to live. D. The lake is already overflowing.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
You’ve probably heard countless times how exercise is “good for you”. 36 Exercise benefits every part of the body, including the mind.
Exercising regularly can help prevent weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure. 37 Also, when you exercise, your body makes chemicals that help you feel good. Exercise lowers your chances of depression and decreases feelings of anxiety. Plus, exercise can give you a sense of accomplishment after you achieve a goal.
Considering all the health benefits of being physically active, it’s easy to see why doing exercise is wise. And the great thing is that it’s never too late to start. 38 Taking a short bike ride, walking the dog and raking(用耙子拢)leaves are all great exercise.
39 One of the biggest reasons people drop an exercise program is a lack of interest. If what you’re doing isn’t fun, it’s hard to keep it up. But there are many different sports and activities you can try and see which one inspires you. If you need a little more motivation, take a class, join a team or find an exercise buddy to help keep you on track.
Everyone can benefit from moving more and sitting less, even those with disabilities or medical problems. 40
A. If you have a health problem or other concerns, talk to your doctor before beginning an exercise plan. B. Exercises like jumping or lifting weights can help keep your bones strong. C. Even small things can count as exercise. D. Strengthening the heart, muscles and bones isn’t the only important goal of exercise. E. However, sometimes you may find it hard to keep exercising regularly. F. Sports and activities that encourage flexibility are easy to find. G. Do you know that it can improve your mood too

When I worked as a nurse, I was on day duty while my workmates were on night duty. On one shift, I sensed something strange just before going off duty at 11 am. I put down the tray(托盘)on the table and suddenly it fell off the table. At first, I didn’t care as I thought I had accidentally knocked it over, but then I felt the whole building shaking and heard patients were screaming and running madly.
At that moment, I realized that an earthquake was happening. My first thought was to rescue my patient and protect myself. I quickly caught hold of a nearby patient, who was terribly frightened and pushed her under a bed. And then, I got under another bed myself. As soon as the earthquake stopped, I decided to try and get the patient safely outside. I carried her out and helped her down to the grassland, where several other people had gathered.
As I was afraid that my other workmates were in danger, I went back inside the building again. When I met Lucy, our head nurse, I found her patient couldn’t walk. We made a seat for the patient by linking our hands and arms, and carried her outside together. We went back through the building to check if anyone was left behind in our sickroom.
Just then, we saw that a man doctor was calling for volunteers to go down to other sickrooms with him to help more patients and medical workers. So we followed him together. The doctor went ahead of us and found one of the nurses partially covered with broken stones, luckily still alive. Suddenly, the aftershock struck and the doctor ordered us to leave. The brave doctor intended to stay alone and risk his own life to save the nurse.

参考范文:
Dear Eric,
You wrote that you are interested in Chinese idioms but you have some difficulties in learning Chinese idioms. I’d like to share some suggestions with you on how to learn Chinese idioms.
The best way of learning idioms is through reading. Only by reading more and accumulating more can you master them to the fullest. At the same time, having a Chinese idiom dictionary can also be a good choice, so that you can refer to it when you come across the idioms you don’t understand. What’s more, there is always a story behind the idiom. Therefore, you can search it on the Internet, which will make your idiom learning more interesting and efficient.
Hope my suggestions are helpful.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
参考范文:
But no one was willing to leave. We immediately took quick action to begin the rescue. We first encouraged her to keep calm and build up confidence. We gently removed the blocks one by one. Then we gently lifted her out. She was bleeding from several injuries in her body. During our rescue, there were several small earthquakes occurring and the building shook violently. Without delay, we wheeled her to the treatment room and treated her wounds as quickly as possible. Then we took her downstairs to safety.
My next task was to settle and care for the sick on the ground. I was relieved that the patients and the doctors and nurses had safely escaped from the building. However, because the patients were too weak to stand for long periods of time, I went back to the sickroom to get some quilts and spread them on the grass for the patients to rest on them. I then helped rescue workers set up tents and create a rescue center, and thus the patients recovered their normal treatment.

W: OK, I suppose you’re right. What food should we have
M: Oh, I’ll make some pizzas, and I’m sure Grandma will make a birthday cake.
W: Yes, I’m sure she will. I’ll make some salad then. What do you think I should get him
M: Let me think. No scarves or hats—I’m giving him a scarf and Grandpa just bought a hat last month. What about a book He reads a lot.
W: OK, good idea. Oh, what day should we plan to have the party
M: Well, his birthday’s on Thursday, so we could do it on Friday—no, Saturday. Saturday is the best day for a party.

W: Dan, I’d like to have a word with you.
M: Sure, M s. Martha.
W: I know you’ve missed some classes recently. I’m getting concerned. I don’t want you to fall behind, Dan.
M: I’m sorry, Ms. Martha, but the truth is that I’ve never been good at history. To be honest, I failed almost all my history tests.
W: That’s OK, Dan. Sometimes you need to go back to basics. Once you develop some tricks for memorizing people, places and dates, history is as easy as ABC.
M: Thanks, Ms. Martha. I am planning to read up on some history in my spare time.
W: I’m glad you are taking your studies seriously. If you are interested, you can also sign up for a history club.
M: Thanks for your suggestion, Ms. Martha. I’m hoping I can sail through your class in the near future.
