·Wilderness Survival badge—learn about water and land survival through designed tasks and their search and rescue of “downed” pilot.
With all the programs, teamwork is key as trainees learn the importance of leadership and being part of a bigger task.
All this fun is available for ages 9 to 18. Families can enjoy the experience together, with programs for families with children as young as 7. Stay an hour or a week—there is something here for everyone!

Timothy Harrison of Center Point, Alabama planned to attend his high school graduation. He'd even cleared it with his boss to take time off. But when the day arrived, Harrison found himself stuck. The event was being held an hour away from home. With his family members working and no one able to drive him there, much to the surprise of his manager, Cedric Hampton, Harrison showed up for his regular 7 a.m, shift at the local Walffle House.
Once Hampton heard Harrison's story—not only did he have no idea how to get to the graduation, but he'd missed out on picking up his ticket, cap, and graduation gown (礼服)—the quick thinking manager immediately asked his Waffle House staff to take action.
“I could see in his eyes that he really wanted to go, and I was going to get him there no matter what,” Hampton said. “No kid should miss their high school graduation.” After being driven to school to get his cap and gown, back at the Waffle House, the excited senior was dressed in a brand new ensemble (全套服装) picked up and paid for by his co workers.
Harrison was now properly dressed, but they still had to get him to the three o'clock graduation on time. It was a close call, but thanks to Hampton, the soon to be graduate just made it. While his co workers weren't able to accompany the young man inside, they couldn't have been prouder of him. Harrison, who's only been at his job a little over a month, is grateful to Hampton for stepping in, stepping up, and being willing to go the extra mile for him. “As the saying goes, ‘It takes a village to raise a child,’” Hampton told WBRC. “I'm just happy to be a part of that village.”
Once news of the day's events spread, Harrison's village got a whole lot bigger. Since the story aired on WBRC, he was offered a full scholarship at Birmingham's Lawson State Community College.
24.Why was Hampton surprised when Harrison showed up for work at 7 a.m.
A.Harrison was accompanied by his parents. B.Harrison had asked for leave the day before.
C.Harrison forgot his graduation. D.Harrison had arrived too early.

A.They bought him some clothes. B.They took care of Harrison's customers.
C.They picked him up from the graduation. D.They helped him select a cap and gown.
26.What did Hampton tell WBRC
A.He drove miles that day. B.He was glad to do his bit.
C.He found it hard to raise a child. D.He would bring his village to a new level.
27.What can be inferred about Harrison from the last paragraph
A.He will move to a bigger village. B.He keeps track of the local news.
C.He was even luckier after the graduation. D.He made an effort to get his story aired.

A 2020 study in the journal Science concluded that marine heat waves have increased more than 20 fold as a result of climate warming. The authors found that in the first decade after satellites began recording ocean temperatures (i.e., after 1981), there were 27 large marine heat waves, with an average duration of 32 days and an average peak temperature anomaly of 8.5?; in the 2010s, there were 172, which lasted 48 days on average with an average peak temperature almost 10? above normal.
Much remains unclear about marine heat waves. For example, explains Nicholas Bond, research scientist at the University of Washington and Washington's state climatologist, there is the question of why so many persist for weeks or months. “There must be something else going on that helps maintain them,” he says. He notes that one explanation is that as the ocean surface warms, it radiates heat into the atmosphere that prevents cloud cover from forming, exposing the seawater to increased sunlight and further warming.
However, enough is known about marine heat waves for scientists to be gravely concerned about their potential impacts. Of special note is the fact that those impacts can last long after the heat waves have disappeared. After three years of the Blob, the waters of the northeastern Pacific began to cool in 2016; but years later, scientists are still determining the extent to which the region's ecosystem is likely to return fully to its pre Blob status. Similarly, notes Scannell, who is a data scientist with Jupiter Intelligence, Inc., following the 2010 11 Western Australia event, “lots of kelp (巨藻) forests died, and it takes literally decades for those ecosystems to bounce back”.
Eric Oliver, a scientist from Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, expressed his own opinion about the potential impact of the heat waves in tropical waters. “I think that's really a tough issue,” he says. Life in the tropics, he notes, is adapted to “quite a narrow range of temperatures. So that's where things can get really messy. We can have complete shifts in tropical systems.”
28.What can we infer from the figures listed in Para. 1
A.The problem of marine heat waves is becoming worse.
B.The satellites enable scientists to record ocean temperature precisely.
C.Climate change is the main cause of the marine heat waves.
D.Marine heat waves have been found by scientists for about 30 years.
29.What does the 2nd paragraph mainly talk about
A.Various factors that lead to marine heat waves.
B.The possible impacts of a warm ocean surface.
C.The possible reason why marine heat waves last long.
D.Scientists' efforts in exploring the causes of heat waves.
30.What do we know about the impact of the marine heat waves
A.The impact will disappear shortly after the sea water cools.
B.It takes long before the ecosystem makes a complete recovery.
C.Scientists have known enough to restore the impact.
D.The northeastern Pacific and Western Australia are the worst cases.
31.What is Eric Oliver's attitude towards the heat waves in tropic waters
A.Concerned. B.Indifferent. C.Doubtful. D.Optimistic.

“Whenever there is a reason to be stressed, your nervous system sends hormones (激素) throughout your body,” says Marta Zaraska, author of the new book “Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100”.
Those stress hormones are produced to tell you to face dangers, Zaraska says. But over time, humans' stressors, or stress points, have changed considerably. The hormones are now “constantly activated” by stress points from busy modern life such as finances, work, or school, she says. That means the hormones are constantly flooding the body, putting us in a never ending fight or flight state.
There are detrimental effects from the endless production of stress hormones, such as a higher risk of diabetes (糖尿病) or heart disease, Zaraska says. But at the same time, so called “social hormones” can also be activated when we're socially connected to other people. Those also have key impacts on our health.
One example is the Roseto effect. In the early 1960s, a community in Roseto, Pennsylvania, hand a death rate that was about 35% lower than the general U.S. population. Roseto residents weren't particularly healthy people—many had bad eating habits. There was also nothing unusual about their genes (基因). But their close contact with each other proved valuable. At the time, no one was dying from heart attacks in Roseto, Zaraska says. This attracted scientists and they started to study the population.
Researchers found the Roseto community—built on 22 community organizations for only 2,000 residents and principles of volunteering, taking care of public space and caring for each other—actually had amazing health benefits.
But researchers also predicted that if Roseto residents lost their communal touch, their overall health would fail. “Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened generations later in the 1970s and so on,” Zaraska says. “And when people started working longer hours, they stopped being so connected to their community and their health also just went back to the American average.”
“The best state is when you are socially connected, optimistic, and you eat healthily and exercise,” Zaraska says.
32.What does Zaraska tell us about stress hormones
A.They help people better adapt to busy modern life.
B.They have become less effective than before.
C.They aim to remind people of dangers.
D.They are difficult to produce.
33.What does the underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 3 mean
A.Overall. B.Harmful. C.Unclear. D.Immediate.
34.What was the major reason for Roseto residents' lower death rate
A.Their distinctive genes. B.Their peaceful living style.
C.Their healthy eating habits. D.Their deep social connections.
35.What can we say about the researchers' prediction for the community
A.It was quite misleading. B.It proved to be correct.
C.It seemed a bit senseless. D.It was based on new theories.

Jane was waiting in the corridor outside her class. She had two exams that day and physics was the first. She really hated physics. Her friend Terry looked at her from the front of the line, and then looked away quickly. Jane thought she looked guilty. She didn't have a problem with physics. She didn't have a problem with anything...Miss Perfect!
“Hi, Jane, it's your favorite exam today,” said Maya, laughing as she joined the line. Terry was looking at Jane again. “So what's wrong with her?” asked Maya. “I thought you were friends.” “Yes, so did I,” said Jane. “but she hasn't spoken to me for two weeks now. She promised to help me review for the physics exam too, but then she ignored all my calls and texts. She seemed to have forgotten who her friends are!” said Jane angrily. “Are you listening to me?” Mr. Richard was talking to the class and the other students were going into the exam room. Jane gave Maya a worried look and followed them.
Jane couldn't answer question number five. She looked up and saw Terry sitting two rows in front of her. Jane couldn't believe it! Terry was holding her phone on her knee under the table and reading from it. Is that how Terry always got such good grades She felt really angry at Terry, but she didn't know what to do. She thought about telling the teacher, but what would everyone else think of her “Stop writing and put your pens down,” said Mr. Richard as he started to collect the exam papers.
Jane wanted to talk to Terry at lunch time, but she couldn't find her anywhere. The next exam was history. That was Jane's favorite subject but she wasn't feeling good. She didn't know what to do about Terry. “It wasn't fair!” she thought. “Terry was getting good grades by cheating all the time.” thought Jane. Just then, Mr. Richard walked past her table. “Mr. Richard...”

W: Bob, I'm sure you know about second hand smoke.
M: Of course, I do.
W: But have you heard about third hand smoke
M: Third hand smoke I'm afraid not. What is that then
W: Well, it is here in today's paper. Parents may think they are protecting children from second hand smoke when they smoke outside their home or only when the children are not there. But now researchers are warning about what they call third hand smoke. When you smoke, dangerous matter from cigarettes get into your hair and clothing. As babies are the weakest, when you come to a baby, you pass it to the baby and increase the chances of disease in the baby.
M: Is that so In that case I have to say that I should never get close to a baby.
W: That's right. Actually all smoking parents should do the same or better give it up completely.

M: Hello, welcome to our program “Today City”. I'm Larry. We're going to Louisville Kentucky where our guest Michelle Ray comes from. She is proud of her middle sized city with a small town feel and big city dreams. Now, Michelle, tell us about your city.
W: Thank you, Larry. Here is my city. Louisville is my city. The first place I take visitors from out of town is to the Highlands for shopping and night life. When I have delicious Asian food I always go to the Zen Garden which provides wonderful all vegetable dishes.
M: Wow, that's interesting. Many people go for healthy food now.
W: You can say that again. If I want to go camping and finishing, I go to the Red River area. For complete quiet I can hide away in my house with a good book from one of our public libraries.
M: That all sounds very exciting. I'm sure some of our listeners will include Louisville in their travel plan for their next holiday. Thank you, Michelle.
Text 10
M: We are glad to have Dr. Garfield to talk to us today about dreams. Let me start by asking the first question. Does everyone dream
W: It appears that everyone does. Mostly when people say that they never dream, what they really mean is that they don't remember their dreams or they don't think dreams are important. The reason behind is that they might have been made fun of with a child when they first reported their dreams or it was so frightening that they just turned off dreaming completely. The other day, someone named Davis came to me and said that he used to be a great dreamer, but suddenly he stopped having dreams. I asked him what it happened. It turned out that his brother died by heart attack and he never expected that such a terrible thing would happen to a young person. Generally, when there was some frightening event and dream about it was too terrible. People prefer not to dream about it. Actually the worst thing you can do is stop dreaming. Because it means that the bad experience would be too painful to even appear in dreams. As long as you dream about it and even the dream is frightening, your mind is working on it. My personal opinion about what dreams do is that they help us deal with our problems. We see certain patterns take place in dreams. When a person is hurt deep inside, when a person is seriously ill or when a person has been really sad, if people turn off their dreams totally, it means they don't love themselves to even think about it.

Gratitude to My Parents
My parents are the ones loving me most in the world, who care about the details of my life, provide guidance for my growth, and offer timely help when necessary. In a word, I credit all that I have to them.
In return for their devotion, I am willing to do whatever makes them feel loved. Being admitted into my dream university is on the top of the list. Furthermore, I will do my little bit, such as doing some housework and taking more time to keep them company.
I am confident that, through my efforts, I can make them happier and even prouder of me one day.
