Getting to Antarctica is not easy. The few who are lucky enough to visit this most mysterious continent do so by ships. To reach Antarctica, ships must pass through a__notoriously violent area of ocean called the Drake Passage, considered to be the roughest stretch of sea on the planet.
Walls of water thirty, sometimes forty feet high continually crashed about our ship for two solid days. We would hold on to a rope inside the ship while being violently tipped to one extreme side, then to the other, and then back again. My daughter Claire and I were as mentally prepared as we could be.
About two and a half days after entering the Drake Passage, the waters calmed. Soon, we noticed small black spots on nearby pieces of floating ice. Emperor penguins! Then, we began the two-mile hike over the ice to the penguin colony. Within several hundred yards, little clusters of emperors, perhaps ten or so at a time, greeted us, sliding on their bellies and making their wonderful noises, sort of a nasally squeal.
One day two adult emperors with their three chicks in-tow approached Claire, who was resting on the ice. They left the chicks with her, as if she were the babysitter. Twenty minutes later they returned to collect the chicks, and I will never forget the penguin that, when I jokingly asked which way back to the helicopters, pointed a wing in the correct direction. Every night aboard our safe and warm ship, we thought about what it takes to survive in Antarctica, an incredibly harsh place.
But each day on the ice, we also thought about the Drake passage, that monstrous body of water we had to endure to get where we were. Over the course of our visit, we came to respect the power of that sea. We still talk about the penguins, as I'm sure we always will. But we talk about the Drake too. Both experiences were unforgettable, and one would not have been possible without the other.
24.What does the underlined word “notoriously” mean in Paragraph 1
A.Frequently traveled. B.Hard to locate.
C.Recognized negatively. D.Aimlessly sailed.
25.Which of the following best describe the voyage in the Drake passage

C.Friendly and entertaining behavior. D.Ability to survive in their environment.
27.What did the author most likely gain from his experience
A.An increased respect for the power of nature.
B.An understanding of how animals survive in cold climates.
C.An awareness of the types of activities his daughter enjoys.
D.An interest in other journeys that involve physical challenges.

Blue whales, the earth's largest animals, call to others of their kind, though exactly what these cries communicate remains a mystery. But these sounds have begun evolving (演变). Since at least the 1960s, the pitch (音调) of Antarctic blue whales has downshifted. Scientists have theories as to why: all involving humans.
The deepening of their sounds is not unique. Many blue whales around the world have also dropped their pitch. In a study last year that analyzed more than 1 million individual recordings of whale calls, scale shifts were found across species, and among populations that don't necessarily interact with one another. This is to say, whatever has caused the change doesn't seem to have a specific geographic origin.
The underwater noises caused by ocean traffic and at sea industries might seem a likely criminal. However, scientists have identified lowered pitches even across populations of whales that live in seas without major shipping routes.
One possible explanation for the change is the achievements of global conservation efforts. As their populations have grown, then, the whales may have decreased their volume because they are more likely to be communicating over short distances.
Last year's study of whale calls also suggests a threatening reason for the drop in pitch, however. Perhaps whales don't need to be so loud because sound waves travel farther in oceans made acidic by the absorption of carbon dioxide.
Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, meanwhile, may also indirectly influence whale voices in other ways. Recent study shows that, during the summer, the whales must use their top volume to be heard in the cracking ice—a natural sound increased by unnatural processes, as rising temperatures worsen ice melt. So the impacts of a warming planet may modulate animal sounds even in remote places.
28.To what extent is whales' pitch drop
A.Across the species. B.In the Antarctic ocean.
C.Among some populations. D.Within one million individuals.
29.What causes the evolving of whales' pitch according to the text
A.Less communication and more threat.
B.Protection efforts and acidic sea water.
C.Sharp decrease of whales' populations.
D.Underwater noises by ships and industries.
30.What does the underlined word “modulate” mean in the last paragraph
A.Produce. B.Damage. C.Balance. D.Change.
31.What can we infer from the text
A.Man is the soul of nature. B.Man and nature are in one.
C.Nature pardons no mistakes. D.Nature has the final say over man.
D
Scientists visiting tiny Henderson Island in the South Pacific recently made an alarming discovery. Although it is one of the most remote places on the earth and previously untouched by humans, the island was covered in plastic waste. They calculated there were 38 million pieces of plastic, weighing almost 18 tons, with thousands of new pieces washing up each day. “No country has a free pass-we found plastic from everywhere,” said one scientist. “We all have a responsibility, and we have to sit up and pay attention. This is not an issue to ignore. We need to do something now to protect the sea.”
Plastic waste in the sea has long been known about, but only now are we discovering the true extent of the problem. Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose, so all the plastic ever produced still exists somewhere. Around 95% of plastics made are not recycled, and large amounts enter the sea. Currents collect this waste in large circular systems called “gyres”. One of the largest is in the Pacific Ocean, an area now known as the “Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.
The problem gets worse as plastic breaks down into very small pieces, or “micro plastic”. This is eaten by fish and leads to massive species loss. Humans also eat these fish, and micro plastic has even been found in tap water around the world. The problem has spread too far to ignore. The plastic on Henderson Island accounts for just 2 seconds' worth of global annual plastic production. That production will more than triple by 2050. Then there will be the same weight of plastic in the sea as fish.
However, there are some young minds working to clean up and protect the sea for future generations. While diving in Greece, young Boyan Slat noticed there was more plastic waste than fish. He decided right then to dedicate his life to solving this problem. Previously the problem was considered too big to solve; collecting the plastic with boats and nets would be expensive, would harm sea life, and would take thousands of years! But, Boyan thought, why move through the sea when the sea can move through you To work with the currents and gyres would help collect the waste. So he started The Ocean Cleanup project, which places very long floating barriers in the Pacific. Currents then concentrate the waste naturally so it can be collected and recycled. He hopes to reduce the patch by 50% in just five years.
“Many problems today are side effects of things people didn't think about in the past”, he says. Sea plastic is a symbol of the negative effects of our lifestyle and technology. Our aim should be to create a new lifestyle for this century. Protecting the sea from plastic is a good place to start.
32.What alarming discovery did the scientists make
A.They discovered a tiny island in the South Pacific Ocean.
B.They discovered there was plastic everywhere on Henderson Island.
C.They discovered that there were no human beings on Henderson Island.
D.They discovered Henderson Island was the most remote place in the world.
33.What can we learn from the passage
A.Micro plastic is merely harmful to the fish in the sea.
B.Not all the countries have to face the problem of plastic trash.
C.Nowadays there is the same weight of plastic in the sea as fish.
D.Most plastics made are not recycled, and large amounts enter the sea.
34.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4
A.How the Ocean Cleanup project works.
B.The problem of plastic cleanup is too big to tackle.
C.Let the sea itself decompose the plastic waste naturally.
D.Collecting plastic with boats and nets would be a good way.
35.Which of the following words best describe Boyan Slat
A.Considerate and straightforward. B. Intelligent and responsible.
C.Knowledgeable and sensitive. D. Devoted and courageous.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Criticism is harmful to healthy relationships.__36__ First, work on changing your own behavior. Then, find effective ways to communicate if someone bothers you.
Changing Your Behavior
●Think before you speak.__37__ Sometimes, it's best to let small indiscretions (轻率的行为) go. Try taking a few deep breaths and leaving the room instead of criticizing.
●Separate the individual from their actions. If you work on separating the person from the action, you may naturally want to criticize less. As you realize you cannot judge a person's character based on a single choice or decision, you will be unable to call someone out for being rude or disrespectful.
●Focus on positives. Oftentimes, being critical results from how you're choosing to see a situation. Everyone has shortcomings. However, the vast majority of people have good qualities that outweigh bad ones.__38__
Communicating More Effectively
●__39__ Some people have issues that may need addressing. However, feedback is very different from criticism. When addressing an issue, focus on suggestions you can make to help another person improve, which is more effective than criticizing.
●Ask for what you want directly. Inefficient communication often results in heavy criticism.__40__ Make sure to ask for what you want in a direct, respectful manner. This will eliminate (消除) the need for criticism.
●Consider the other party's perspective. If you criticize others too often, you may be shutting out the other person's point of view. Try to step in another person's shoes before criticizing and you may get some new and special ideas.
A.Give feedback rather than criticism.
B.However, there are ways to avoid criticism.
C.Try to focus on a person's positive qualities over their negative ones.
D.If you find yourself making assumptions about a person's character, stop yourself.
E.If you're not telling someone what you want, that person cannot be expected to know.
F.Criticism should, ideally, be working towards an effective solution to a negative situation.
G.When you want to dish out criticism, pause and consider whether you really need to say anything.

A Midnight Rescue
It was not uncommon to carry out tasks at night as rescuers. Harry and David were informed of their task when it was nearly midnight. It was urgent so there was no time to hesitate. They headed into the forest.
The forest was black and silent. A little way into it they reached a fork in the earth path. Harry and David took the left path. They walked in silence, their eyes on the ground, watching out for the traps like big pits(坑)set by the illegal hunters. Every now and then a ray of moonlight through the branches above lit a spot of scarlet (猩红的) blood on the fallen leaves.
David saw that Harry looked very worried, asking, “Could Unicorn be hurt that badly?” Harry answered, “If we can't find it as soon as possible, it doesn't stand much chance to survive.” Of course, Unicorn was not the animal in fairy tales but the nickname of a 3-year-old elephant, the last wild elephant in this forest. The nickname was given by the biodiversity rescuers who were protecting every member in this forest. They knew Unicorn was obedient and not afraid of human beings and that sometimes put it in danger. “Without it, the forest was not complete. Those illegal hunters should be thrown into prison.” Harry thought, carrying his first aid kit (急救箱) on his back and walking forward with his flashlight.
It seemed that thick fog would come at any time, which would increase the danger. Harry hurried into the heart of the forest with David. They walked for nearly half an hour, deeper and deeper. There were blood splashes (血迹) on the roots of a tree, as though the poor creature had been struggling around in pain close by. “We must hurry up”, said Harry.

Hello, everyone!
It's a great honor for me to make a speech about the protection of sea creatures. The past few years have witnessed a rapid reduction in the number of sea creatures, some even being in danger of extinction. There are various reasons behind this.To begin with, people are not aware of the importance of protecting the marine environment, so large quantities of pollutants have been poured into the ocean.Besides, some people hunt illegally for profit, which results in a decrease in the types of sea creatures. Therefore, it's high time we took some effective measures to protect them.
That's all.Thanks for listening!
