For quite some time I have had an interest in the situation of the homeless. I have read about it,prayed over it,and have done small things to help. But feeling that I could, and should,do more to make a difference,I concluded that living as a homeless man—at least for a very brief period—was the best way to understand what it's like to have no place to call home.
I decided that St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church would be my first stop. Since the church opens its basement to homeless people every Friday for a hot meal,St. Vincent's was symbolically a very good place to start my day as a homeless man.
After praying before the Blessed Sacrament,I hit the subfreezing streets with no money. I got into a line of men, women and children waiting to be admitted into the dining room where a free hot meal is served every day.
From there I walked to Health Care for the Homeless—an organization dedicated to providing free medical care to people who have no permanent residence. Inside were about 75 homeless women and men waiting to be seen by a nurse. There I spoke with an older man who had serious family problems that caused his homelessness.
Next,I stopped at a hotel and fast food restaurant asking if they were hiring. From there I walked the streets of downtown Baltimore asking people for a little loose change to buy a cup of coffee. I politely approached approximately 35 people. About 30 of them ignored me,and said they didn't have any money,or simply said no. But five people did offer me a small donation. I explained what I was doing, and thankfully declined their generosity.
Later that night,as I walked back to my vehicle,I realized that I was a richer person for having lived one day as a homeless man. I thought about the homeless men and women I encountered, and their problems.
24.Why did the author decide to make a start from the church
A.Only it offered the homeless a hot meal.
B.It impressed the author in many ways.
C.It had a routine of opening to the homeless.
D.Many homeless people were allowed to live in the basement.
25.What did the author do while he was in Health Care for the Homeless
A.He had a word with a homeless man.
B.He helped an older man with family problems.
C.He knew it was too miserable to have no money.
D.He had a hot meal with some women and children.
26.What can we infer from the fifth paragraph
A.The author worked a few hours in the restaurant.
B.People should have cared about the homeless more.
C.No food restaurants agreed to hire a homeless man.
D.Very few people looked down upon the homeless.
27.What would the author most probably do in the future
A.He would treasure what he had got in life.
B.He would spend more time with the homeless.
C.He would find a better way to help the homeless.
D.He would frequently invite the homeless to his home.

Half of all Australian teens now spend more time, or as much tine, online with their friends rather than seeing them in person. This is despite the fact that one third of boys and 42 percent of girls say social media makes hard times even more tough. Teenagers who went from using social media weekly to daily had a higher risk of depression and anxiety, the researchers found. New research from the Australian Institute of Family Studies has renewed concerns about the impact of screen time on teenagers' mental health.
The findings showed 46 percent of 16-year-olds and 36 percent of 14-year-olds spent the same time contacting friends via Snapchat, video gaming, Instagram or TikTok as seeing them face-to-face. The findings also showed 7 percent of 16-year-olds and 5 percent of 14-year-olds mainly interacted with friends electronically. The highest percentage of children who communicated with friends mostly via social media were 16-year-olds with autism (自闭症), the researchers found. The study, which has followed 10,000 children since 2004, surveyed 14 and 15-year-olds and 16 and 17-year-olds about the time they spent online.
Australian Institute of Family Studies researcher Pilar Rioseco said, “The platforms young people are using to commune have changed significantly and digital devices such as mobile phones have become more readily available to adolescents.”
“The COVID 19 pandemic has changed the way that many young people connect, with many having to rely heavily on digital technologies to keep in touch with friends and family.” Dr Rioseco also found that a quarter of teens were victims of cyber bullying, including threats and name calling. A quarter of those with autism said being online made it easier to be themselves and almost half said being online helped them feel better during difficult times.
Dr Rioseco said online connection “appears to have benefits for some young people in terms of helping social connection and providing support during difficult times”. “Providing young people with the skills to communicate safely online and deal with cyber bullying is critical,” she added.
28.What does the new research show
A.36% of 14-year-olds mostly communicated with friends online.
B.46% of 16-year-olds mostly communicated with friends online.
C.7% of 16-year-olds spent equal time with friends online and offline.
D.36% of 14-year-olds spent equal time with friends online and offline.
29.What can best replace the underlined word “commune” in Paragraph 3
A.update B.defend C.connect D.learn
30.What may one fourth teenagers with autism think of online connection
A.It makes them at ease.
B.It is a main threat to them.
C.It cures them of the disease.
D.It makes them experience more difficult times.
31.How can we help the teenagers according to Dr Rioseco
A.By allowing them to connect more online.
B.By teaching them to protect themselves online.
C.By providing them with more Internet languages.
D.By offering them more platforms to communicate.

The Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) and University of Central Lanca shire (UCLan) share findings of a project to improve student engagement with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
It's long been acknowledged that students from disadvantaged backgrounds are under-represented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Now, research conducted by UCLan and funded by STFC shows the causes of this problem and points to innovative solutions. The Blackpool Physics; Inspire, Engage, Research (PIER) project found that primary school children from low socio-economic areas are just as interested in science but lack knowledge about possible science careers.
The PIER project is following a group of pupils as they progress from Grade 6 to Grade 9, using surveys, interviews and other assessments to measure interest in science. These initial findings suggest that attempts to increase science participation among young people should not simply promote the subject as “fun” or “interesting”. Instead, greater impact could be achieved by demonstrating clearly how science can open possible future career opportunities.
Many of the pupils taking part in the study understood that studying science could be useful but few could explain why, suggesting a need for greater education about STEM careers. As well as broadening our understanding of the issue, the PIER project is solving the problem head on. The team has carried out a variety of activities each year for the participants, including “meet the scientists” events, trips to UCLan's Alston Observatory as well as family science events at school.
Lead Researcher and STFC Fellow in Public Engagement, Professor Robert Walsh, said, “Much government policy towards boosting science in higher education focuses on an assumed lack of interest and desire in low-socioeconomic groups.” However, the enthusiasm is already there and this “hidden science identity” needs to be revealed and translated into real life prospects for these young people. We're recommending that programs instead allow young people to explore their science identity more fully and provide innovative ways to discover the jobs that studying science may lead to.
32.What do people generally believe about poor students
A.They have no interest in STEM careers.
B.They are not engaged enough in science.
C.They are more representative of science.
D.They have many character disadvantages.
33.What does the PIER project pay more attention to
A.Assessing pupils' performance.
B.Increasing the surveys of pupils.
C.Demonstrating the potential value of science.
D.Promoting the subject as “fun” or “interesting”.
34.Why does the team conduct various activities
A.To boost science development.
B.To meet the pupils' needs for school events.
C.To promote teaching related careers' development.
D.To improve students' understanding of STEM careers.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.What Is the Definition of PIER
B.Increase Pupils' Learning Awareness
C.How Does the PIER Project Come into Being
D.The PIER Project Helps Poor Pupils Engage in Science

“Everybody in the world should receive a standing ovation (鼓掌) at least once in their life.” Marv said to Scruff and Max. “People like you can't get a standing ovation.” Scruff and Max rebuted (反驳) him. Marv ignored them and walked away, thinking, “I will show them that I can receive a standing ovation!”
Every year on the final school day, one child is awarded The Edward Yellow Award. This award is awarded to the school topper. Marv desperately wanted this award.
Marv didn't have normal legs like others. He walked in a very unusual way. Everyone did not go close to Marv. He was home schooled till 4th grade as his parents were a little nervous to send him to a regular school. So he started formal education from 5th grade. He really liked the teachers in his school. One of his favorite teachers was Mrs. Harsia, who teaches maths and he really liked this subject. Mrs. Harsia used to call him the “Math Wiz”. Though he was disabled, he had a sharp mind to do difficult mathematics calculations.
5th grade's math's final assessment was coming up and he was teamed up with Scruff, who had developed a liking for Marv due to Marv's brilliant maths.
“Ha, you are with the fat guy!” Max teased (取笑) Scruff.
“Stop teasing him,” Scruff said, “How would you feel if somebody called you this name?”
Max silently walked away.
Scruff asked Marv to start to do their project. Marv thought many great ideas. “Ah, this looks so awesome, Marv!” Scruff said, “You really are a Math Wiz!” They soon became good friends.
One day, Marv heard someone scream on the campus. He ran towards the voice. A girl was crying, her knee bleeding. In no time, Marv took out his handkerchief and covered the girl's knee to stop bleeding.
“What is your name?” Marv asked.
“Kate. I know you are Marv. My brother often mentions you.” the girl responded.

Text 10
Herbert Marshal was a student at Cambridge, but his hometown was St. Albans. It was August and the family had gone to the seaside. Herbert went to France for his holiday, but he ran out of money, and came home a week earlier than he had expected to.
His train didn't get into St. Albans until just before midnight. The last bus had gone, so he had to walk home. He let himself into the kitchen, and as he was feeling hot and sticky, he took off his shirt to have a wash.
Suddenly he heard heavy steps running up the path. The back door burst open, and he found himself surrounded by policemen. They pushed him into the living room next door, made him sit down, and began asking him questions.
“What's your name?”
“Where do you live?”
“What are you doing here?”
“I live here,” said Herbert. “I've been on holiday.” But nobody listened to him. They just went on asking questions. Then suddenly one of the policemen said,“ Watch him, Frank. We'll go and search the house.”
