In 1939, seven-year-old Miriam Schreiber should have started first grade. Instead, she spent that year — and the following five — trying to survive. She was living in Poland when World War II broke out. “My entire life was ruined within minutes,” she says. “I was looking forward to starting school.”She never made it. And not having a degree has always been a thorn in her side.
Decades later, though, the now-89-year-old Holocaust survivor finally got something she had always longed for. Kapiloff Brander, director of community programs at Jewish Family Services, reached out to theNew England Jewish Academy, a Jewish high school, to ask whether the school could help Mariam fulfill her wish. Richard Nabel, the principal of the school, brought a few senior students to Miriam’s home to hear her story before they came up with the idea of presenting her an honorary diploma at the school’s 2020 graduation ceremony.
Miriam suffered a lot in a slave labor camp in Siberia before she got liberated in 1946. She and her remaining family members went to a refugee camp in Germany, where she got married and had her first child at the age of 16. Having spent years in refugee camps in different countries, she finally immigrated to America in 1960. Getting a formal education was never an option for her but she learned seven language sever the years. “I educated myself,” she says. “I read books day and night. I still do.”
On August 16, during a socially distanced ceremony in the school gym, Miriam was presented with a high school diploma from the New England Jewish Academy. “There weren’t too many dry eyes among the 30 of us there,” says Nabel. Miriam’s family was especially moved. “I’m not sure she even realizes the importance of that moment to me,” says Bernie, her eldest son. “I am so proud of her.”

A new study has found human feelings can accurately be expressed numerically(用数字表示地) and have more predictive power for how we behave than formal studies of socioeconomic factors like household income and employment status.
The study co-author Andrew Oswald, a professor of economics and behavioral science gathered information from nearly 700,000 people, who were asked annually over a three-decade period how they felt on a numerical scale about their job, spouse, health and home. Using the data collected, researchers constructed statistical models to show how people felt and the actions they took as a result of their reported feelings. The study found that ratings of life satisfaction had a direct linear (线性的) relationship to actions people subsequently take. Participants who rated their job satisfaction as a 2 out of 7 had a 25% probability of quitting their job. Those who rated a 6 out of 7 had only a 10 percent probability of quitting. The same was true across other measures like marriage, health and housing.
Previous research has also shown data about feelings predict human outcomes, but not in such a linear fashion; the degree of satisfaction served as a good predictor of future actions. Additionally, economists have previously been critical of feelings data because they considered them unscientific and unreliable. But this study shows socioeconomic factors have a lesser probability of predicting human behavior than data on feelings.
Though the study shows numbers can quantify(量化) feelings, researchers are still a bit confused as to why estimates of seemingly subjective feelings can be such good predictors of future actions. According to Oswald, a number of factors could be at play. Humans are very experienced in comparative thinking and are able to scale their own life satisfaction against that of their neighbors. We’re also accustomed to using measuring devices for other aspects of life like temperature, distance and weight, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that we’re able to measure our feelings in a similarly accurate way. Another study co-author Caspar Kaiser says that it may also be because we communicate our feelings and do it in a scaled fashion every day. This could be why it comes out in the data more accurately than in objective markers.
Ori Heffetz, an economics professor who was not involved in the study, says that this research shows feelings data shouldn’t be underestimated even if they’re more difficult to study. “Scientists who ignore this do so at their own risk,” he says.
Looking ahead, Kaiser hopes this same data can be studied in lower-income countries so that it can be applied universally to places with varied levels of economic development. But more than anything else he’s interested in studying why feelings work so well.
28.Paragraph 2 is mainly about .

Recycling is a great way of doing your bit for the environment and helping to protect the earth’s precious resources. However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable may be doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of “wish-cycling” — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cups and pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill. David Heaton, a business director at Biffa, said: “Pollution happens when items are disposed of in the wrong bins or haven’t been cleaned before being recycled.”
Experts at Biffa analyzed the amounts of non-target and non-recyclable materials that entered UK material recycling facilities between 2016 and 2020. It was found that, in 2016, the average pollution rate of recycling waste was 13.4 percent, rising over four years to 17 percent by the end of 2020. This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.
The Biffa experts say that one of the best ways to prevent pollution of recycling is to clean recyclable waste before putting it in the bin. They suggest cutting off the top of old pizza boxes and only recycling that part to avoid pollution from the grease (油脂). Check the on-packaging recycling label to check it can actually be recycled. When it comes to plastics, Biffa recommends checking the resin code, the number in the plastic triangle, to know whether it should go in the recycling bin. In general, resin codes 1, 2, 4 and 5 are recyclable, while 3, 6 and 7 are not. Larger items, like electronics, furniture and batteries, can also be recycled but often cannot go in household recycling bins as they need specialist separating. These will need to be taken to recycling centers or sustainable waste management companies.
“It’s vital as a nation that we get better at effective ‘pre-cycling’—sorting waste correctly before collection to reduce pollution rates,” added Mr. Heaton.
32.What’s the truth of “wish-cycling” according to the first paragraph
A. The desire to lead a sustainable life.
B. The good intention to help recycling.
C. The habit of throwing items that end up in landfills.
D. The practice of recycling items that cannot be recycled.
33.What has experts at Biffa concluded after their analysis
A. Wish-cycling is on the rise in recent years.
B. People are becoming more eco-conscious.
C. Pollution happens less frequently in recycling facilities.
D. People are used to cleaning recyclable waste before putting it in the bin.
34.Which of the following is a proper way of recycling
A. Dispose of electronics together with household waste.
B. Skip the step of checking the on-packaging recycling label.
C. Check the resin code of plastics to see whether it is recyclable or not.
D. Cut off the top of old pizza box and throw the rest to the recycling bin.
35.Which is the most suitable title for the text

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business--a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show ” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two The talent show for the food bank ” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in.

The aim is to celebrate the benefits of good and healthy sleep. Researchers say that if we always get enough sleep, we can be smarter and thinner. Also we’re to have better skin, better memories and longer lives. When you lose even one hour of sleep for any reason, it will influence your performance the next day. In general, adults are thought to need at least eight hours of sleep a night, but a recent survey found that, on workdays, only 21% of them really get a full eight hours of sleep. For teenagers, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night. However, about 80% of high school students don’t get enough sleep because of schoolwork or bad habits. 27% of people worldwide have sleep problems. Now there are over 80 kinds of sleep disorders, and most people know little about their danger. It’s necessary to realize the importance of sleep and try to have a good sleep.

C
28.答案:A
The study co-author Andrew Oswald, a professor of economics and behavioral science gathered information from nearly 700,000 people, who were asked annually over a three-decade period how they felt on a numerical scale about their job, spouse, health and home. 故选A。
根据第三段“Previous research has also shown data about feelings predict human outcomes, but not in such a linear fashion; the degree of satisfaction served as a good predictor of future actions. Additionally, economists have previously been critical of feelings data because they considered them unscientific and unreliable. But this study shows socioeconomic factors have a lesser probability of predicting human behavior than data on feelings.”(先前的研究也表明,关于情感的数据可以预测人类的结果,但不是以这样的线性方式;满意度可以很好地预测未来的行动。
根据倒数第二段“Ori Heffetz, an economics professor who was not involved in the study, says that this research shows feelings data shouldn’t be underestimated even if they’re more difficult to study. “Scientists who ignore this do so at their own risk,” he says.”(没有参与这项研究的经济学教授 Ori Heffetz 说,这项研究表明,即使感觉数据更难研究,也不应该被低估。
31.答案:A
根据文章第一段“A new study has found human feelings can accurately be expressed numerically and have more predictive power for how we behave than formal studies of socioeconomic factors like household income and employment status.”(一项新的研究发现,与对家庭收入和就业状况等社会经济因素的正式研究相比,人类的情感可以准确地用数字表达出来,对我们的行为具有更大的预测力。) 故选A。

33.答案:A
根据第二段中“This shows that, even as people are becoming more eco-conscious, wish-cycling is increasing both in households and businesses.(这表明,尽管人们越来越注重环保,但在家庭和企业中,“希望循环”的数量都在增加)”可知,近年来,“希望循环”的数量正在不断增加。故选B。

通读全文,尤其是第一段中“However, a new study has revealed that our desire to be sustainable maybe doing more harm than good. According to waste company Biffa, this is because of “wish-cycling” — assuming that items such as disposable coffee cup sand pizza boxes will be recycled if put in the recycling bin. In fact, pollution from those items or other non-recyclables can result in recyclable items that have been put in the correct bin going to landfill.

故填is known。

Recently, camping activities are gradually emerging, but they also bring environmental and safety issues.
Firstly, the scattered garbage around the camp garbage bin is piled up into small hills, with bamboo sticks, fruit peel paper scraps, plastic bags, etc. casually thrown onto the grass. In addition, many people are enthusiastic about doing outdoor barbecues and hot pot in campsites, and the fire also poses a hidden danger to these camping areas near forests and grasslands. If the charcoal after the open fire is mishandled and mixed with flammable waste, it is likely to cause a fire during the hot and dry seasons of spring and summer. Let’s join our hands and take action immediately in an environmentally friendly way. Only in this way can we make the world a better place to live in.

I believe you can make it!” I hung up the phone helplessly when my mom came to me. “You certainly can do it well on your own. All you need to do is make yourself confident.” Hearing that, I determined to accomplish this performance perfectly, and I worked day and night on it.
Finally came the big moment. Sitting on pins and needles, I heard the host call my shoe to the stage. With butterflies in my stomach, I took a deep breath .When I stepped onto the stage, I could feel all the eyes fixed on me. A strong sense of nervousness flooded over me. I started my performance as I usually practised and struggled to overcome my fear. The end of our performance was met with a moment of surprising silence, and then the audience erupted into thunderous applause. My heart beating wildly, I was totally immersed in the delight of performance. Not only did I get the chance to shine, but I also obtain the precious quality: Confidence.
