It was a typical summer day in my small town, with the sun shining and the sky clear. I was sitting on my porch, enjoying the peaceful view of the rolling hills and the calm lake, when suddenly a strong wind blew in from the west. The peaceful sky turned dark as a storm approached.
I went inside, grabbing my raincoat and heading to the barn to secure the animals. The cows were nervous, sensing the approaching storm. I quickly tied them up and ran back to the house, just as the rain started to pour down. The wind was howling and the rain was pounding against the windows. Lightning and thunder followed, making the atmosphere even more electric. I sat by the window, watching the raging storm and praying that everything would be okay.
After what seemed like hours, but was only a few minutes, the storm passed. The clouds moved away, revealing a bright and sunny sky. I walked outside, taking in the fresh air and surveying the damage. The trees were bent over and some branches had been blown off. Our vegetable garden was flooded, but other than that, everything seemed to be fine. I breathed a sigh of relief as I realized that no serious damage had been done.
That evening, as I sat by the fireplace with a cup of hot coffee, I reflected on the experience. It reminded me that nature can be both powerful and unpredictable, but that we must persevere and adapt to whatever it throws at us. The next morning, as I watched the sun rise over the now-calm landscape, I felt a sense of pride knowing that my family and I had weathered the storm together

Parents and kids today dress alike, listen to the same music, and are friends. Is this a good thing Sometimes, when Mr. Ballmer and his 16-year-old daughter, Elizabeth, listen to rock music together and talk about interests both enjoy, such as pop culture, he remembers his more distant relationship with his parents when he was a teenager.
“I would never have said to my mom,’ Hey, the new Weezer album is really great. How do you like it ” says Balimer. “There was just a complete gap in taste.” Music was not the only guif. From clothing and hairstyles to activities and expectations, earlier generations of parents and children often appeared to move in separate orbits.
Today, the generation gap (代沟) has not disappeared, but it is getting narrow in many families. Conversations on subjects such as sex and drugs would not have taken place a generation ago. Now they are comfortable and common. And parent-child activities, from shopping to sports, involve a feeling of trust and friendship that can continue into adulthood. No wonder greeting cards today carry the message, “To my mother, my best friend.”
But family experts war n that the new equality (平等) can also result in less respect for parents. “There’s still a lot strictness and authority on the part of parents out there, but there is a change happening,”says Kerrie, a psychology professor at Lebanon Valley College, “In the middle of that change, there is a lot of confusion among parents.”
Family researchers offer a variety of reasons for these changing roles and attitudes. They see the 1960s as a turning point. Great cultural changes led to more open communication and a more democratic process that encourages everyone to have a say.
“My parents were on the ‘before’ side of that change, but today’s parents, the 40-year-olds, were on the ‘after’ side,” explains Mr. Ballmer. “It’s not something easily accomplished by parents these days, because life is more difficult to understand or deal with, but sharing interests does make it more fun to be a parent now.”
28. The underlined word “gulf” in Para 2 most probably means ________.
A. interest B. problem C. difference D. habit
29. Which of the following show that the generation gap is disappearing
A. Parents help their children develop interests in more activities.
B. Parents put more trust in their children’s abilities.
C. Parents and children talk less about sex and drugs.
D. Parents share more interests with their children.
30. What is the change in today’s parent-child relationship
A. Less confusion among parents B. New equality between parents and children
C. More respect for parents from children D. More strictness and authority on the part of parents
31. The purpose of the passage is to ________.
A. describe the difficulties today’s parents have met with
B. discuss the change of the parent-child relationship
C. suggest the ways to handle the parent-child relationship
D. stress the importance of parent-child relationship

Is It Worth Buying Organic Food
Organic food, grow n without artificial chemicals, is increasingly popular nowadays. Consumers have been willing to pay up to twice as much for goods with organic labels (标签). However, if you think paying a little more for organic food gets you a more nutritious (有营养的) and safer product, you might want to save your money. A study led by researchers at Stanford University says that organic products aren’t necessarily more nutritious, and they’re no less likely to suffer from disease-causing bacteria, either.
The latest results, published in the Annuals of Internal Medicine, suggest that buyers may be wasting their money. “We did not find strong evidence that organic food is more nutritious or healthier,” says Dr. Crysta! Smith-Spangler from Stanford. “So consumers shouldn’t assume that one type of food has a lower risk or is safer.”
For their new study, Smith-Spangler and her colleagues conducted a review of two categories of research, including 17 studies that compared health outcomes between consumers of organic against traditional food products, and 223 studies that analyzed the nutritional content of the foods, including key vitamins, minerals and fats.
While the researchers found little difference in nutritional content, they did find that organic fruit and vegetables were 20% less likely to have chemicals remaining on the surfaces. Neither organic nor traditional foods showed levels of chemicals high enough to go beyond food safety standards. And both organic and traditional meats, such as chicken and pork, were equally likely to be harmed by bacteria at very low rates. The researchers did find that organic milk and chicken contained higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a health y fat also found in fish that can reduce the risk of heart disease. However, these nutritional differences were too small, and the researchers were unwilling to make much of them until further studies confirm the trends.
Organic food is produced with fewer chemicals and more natural-growing practices, but that doesn’t always translate into a more nutritious or healthier product. The U. S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) states that “Whether you buy organic or not, finding the freshest foods available may have the biggest effect on taste.” Fresh food is at least as good as anything marketed as organic.
32. The new research questions whether organic food ________.
A. should replace traditional food B. has been overpriced by farmers
C. is grown with less harmful chemicals D. is really more nutritious and healthier
33. Smith Spangler and her colleagues found that ________.
A. organic food could reduce the risk of heart disease
B. traditional food was grown with more natural methods
C. both organic and traditional food they examined were safe
D. there was not a presence of any forms of bacteria in organic food
34. Which of the following is relatively healthier according to the passage
A. Organic chicken and pork. B. Organic milk and chicken.
C. Traditional chicken and pork. D. Traditional fruit and vegetables.
35. What is the author’s attitude toward organic food
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Approving.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the first grade in senior high school, I was extremely shy, I had friends, but it just wasn’t in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people’s conversations.
I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy, I often imagined that I was the main character in the story. My teacher, Mrs. Sather, always encouraged me to write more and be myself. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with great efforts. I thoughts he was one of the first people to see my inner strength.
One day, she showed us a play she had written and announccd that our class was going to perform it. “I’ll begin to choose all the performers tomorrow” she said, “I need someone who is not afraid to be onstage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody wants to try ” A few excited hands shot up --mine, of course, was not one of them and Mrs. Sather smiled. “We’ll talk more about it later,” she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.
“I will never do that,” I thought. But after rereading the play, I was deeply attracted by the story and couldn’t help imagining myself to be the main character Dorothy. There seemed to be a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear. However, I still felt shy and could never picture myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people. Having struggled for a few minutes, I still did not know how to make the decision.

Dear Mary,
Knowing that you plan to take a trip in Northeast during winter holiday, I’d like to recommend the Ice and Snow World in Harbin to you.
Ice and Snow World is especially popular this year. You can appreciate beautiful ice lanterns and snow sculptures. And you can also play on the interesting and exciting ice slide. Furthermore, you can take photos with distinctive buildings and lay down in an ice castle to be the sleeping beauty.
I’m sure that you’ll have a good time there. But remember to wear warm clothes because it’s freezing cold in Harbin. Enjoy yourself!
67.参考答案:
When I was loading up my backpack, Mrs. Sather asked me to go to her. Smiling gently, she asked if I'd like to have a try. “But I'm not good at acting and I'm afraid to screw things up.” In a low voice, I said. Mrs. Sather patted me on the shoulder, saying. “Don't worry, dear. From your writing I know you are a brave girl inside. All you need to do is overcome your fear and take the first step. You can do it. I have faith in you.” Hearing Mrs. Sather's words, I realized it was time to make a change.
One week later, it was time for me to perform on the stage. I felt really nervous at first. Then I remembered all the hard work that I'd put in over the last week. I devoted myself to the play, studying the character, memorizing lines and practicing before the mirror. Gradually, I became more and more confident on the stage. Through misty eyes, I saw Mrs. Sather, who was smiling at me and looking at me encouragingly. I knew I made it! I was very grateful to Mrs. Sather.
