For many years, Croatian-American recording artist Nenad Bach toured the world performing with famous musicians like Bono and Pavarotti. Everything came to a stop in 2010, however, when Nenad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease — a progressive disease that affects a person’s movement.
“I love music,” he said. “When I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2010, I didn’t know what it was. Five years later, I couldn’t even play the guitar.”
One day, a friend of Nenad’s asked him to play ping-pong with him, and Nenad said yes. The effects were immediate and positive: he woke up the next day filled with a “desire to live”, and his physical and mental issues had improved. Encouraged, he kept playing.
For months he told everyone around him about how ping-pong was helping his Parkinson’s, but his praise fell on deaf ears. Finally, he took matters into his own hands and started hosting Ping Pong Parkinson’s events at the Westchester Table Tennis Center in Pleasantville, New York. Once the events attracted enough attention, he started an organization called Ping Pong Parkinson (PPP) in March 2017.
PPP hopes to encourage people living with Parkinson’s to play ping-pong for its benefits. In addition to promoting social connectivity, PPP also says that it increases neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) which creates new neural pathways in the brain. Nenad has seen evidence of this with his own eyes many times in the past years. He said that their “facial expression changes from when they arrive until they leave. In addition, some people start walking again.”
Nenad has made spreading the word about the power of ping-pong his new life’s work! He hopes others will take up the sport and see the same improvements he’s enjoyed since the first time he picked up a paddle (乒乓球拍).
24. What happened to Nenad in 2015
A His disease got worse. B. He learned to perform.
C. He began to play the guitar. D. His acting journey ended.
25. What caused Nenad to have hopes for life again
A. Organizing social events. B. Taking his mind off his work.
C. Setting up Ping Pong Parkinson. D. Playing ping-pong with his friend.
26. What was people’s attitude to Nenad’s words about ping-pong at first
A. Uncertain. B. Favorable. C. Uninterested. D. Curious.
27. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Nenad’s fighting against Parkinson
B. The benefits of playing ping-pong
C. The severity of Parkinson’s disease
D. The sporting experience of Nenad

Though fireworks (烟花) on bonfire night bring joy to many people, it is likely to be a night of fright and pain for the UK’s geese (鹅).
Research by Anglia Ruskin University has found that fireworks displays (表演) cause wild birds to suffer significant pain, and researchers have recommended that displays should not take place in areas with large wildlife populations. A study, published in the journal Conservation Physiology, is one of the first carried out into the effects of fireworks on wildlife. It found that the heart rate (率) of geese increases by 96% when they are influenced by fireworks displays.
The study involved 20 wild grey lag geese fitted with recorders to record their heart rate and body temperature, which are measures of physiological stress. Claudia Wascher, who led the research, found that the average heart rate increased from 63 to 124 beats per minute, and their average body temperature increased from 38℃ to 39℃, in the first hour of fireworks displays. It took the geese about five hours before the birds displayed normal body temperatures, with average readings returning by 5 am.
“Ours is one of the first scientific studies to examine whether fireworks disturb wildlife. There have been previous studies showing that fireworks can cause anxiety in pets, for example in dogs, but little research has been done into how animals in the wild react. We need to carry out further research to conclusively tell whether the geese are reacting to the noise or the light pollution from the fireworks, or a combination of both. Many people get a lot of enjoyment from fireworks but it’s important that we consider animals both pets and wildlife — whenever planning a display,” Wascher said.
32. What advice do researchers give according to the findings of the study
A. Geese should be protected especially at night.
B. Great attention should be paid to the UK’s geese.
C. Fireworks displays should be held without harming wildlife.
D. Fireworks displays should take place to bring joy to people.
33. Why were 20 wild grey lag geese fitted with recorders
A. To compare the heart rates between them.
B. To make them safe and sound in the wild.
C. To keep their body temperature normal.
D. To measure their physiological stress.
34. How long do the geese need to get over the effect of fireworks displays on body temperature
A. About five hours. B. About four hours.
C. About two hours. D. About one hour.
35. What may Wascher’s further research about
A. The relations between light pollution from fireworks and geese.
B. The effects of noise and light pollution from fireworks on geese.
C. Whether fireworks influence other wild animals.
D. The influence of a display on pets and wildlife.

Some difficult sounds for non-native speakers to make are the letters “L” and “R”, and the sound “TH”. ___39___
Break words down into sounds. Words are made up of syllables (音节), or parts. The word “syllable”, for example, has three syllables: syl-la-ble. ___40___ To check how many syllables a word has, place your hand flat just under your chin. Say the word slowly. It was exam time at Marc’s school. Every day, their teachers gave them loads of homework and told them the test was very important and that they ought to spare no effort to perform well in it. Everyone followed the teachers’ instructions and made preparations for it, except Marc. He just turned a deaf ear to it. He thought he would rather play football than study.
His mum and dad repeated the importance of revision for exams over and over again. They told him that he should be working hard preparing for the test. But the weather was sunny and he thought he had better things to do.
“Shall we go to the park ” he said to his friend Huck one afternoon. “It’s a nice day. We could play football and kick around.” Huck shook his head. “I’m supposed to review my lessons,” he said. “I’m going home to do some math.”
Marc was amazed. “You’d rather do math than play football ”
“Math is important. Besides, my mum says she will buy me a mountain bike if I do well in the math exam.”
“That’s crazy,” said Marc. Huck shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Wait until I beat you in the test and you will watch me riding past on my mountain bike!”
“You won’t beat me,” said Marc.
“Oh yes, I will.”
“Oh no, you won’t! That will never happen. Just wait and see!”
For the first time ever, Marc wanted to perform well. He couldn’t bear it if his friend came top and he did badly. So when he got home, he opened his math book. But there was so much to do. All of a sudden, he felt like he’d forgotten everything he had learned that year! He didn’t know where to start. M: Sorry, Miss. I didn’t mean to do that, but it was my alarm clock that didn’t wake me up.
W: That is not a proper excuse. You could set it ahead of the exact time so that you could have got up earlier and not have been late.
M: I did that, but it seemed useless when I found the batteries had run out after I woke up this morning. I rushed to school and luckily, my neighbour Mr. Green gave me a hand and took me to school with his car.
W: So you could have made it. But you were still late for class.
M: The thing is, when I got off, I found I had left my bag in his car. And it was too late to get it back when I realized that. I went straight to the nearest shop and gave him a call. I waited for five minutes before Mr. Green drove back.
W: Finally, he gave you your bag and you came to the classroom and you were already 15minutes late for class at that time. Is that all
M: Miss, you seem to know the entire story. May I go back to class now Otherwise I will be late for the following class.

【解析】
【原文】W: Help me decide on which type of hotel room to book.
M: I want the one with a bed.
W: Very funny. We have a choice of different views, and each one is a different price. For instance, a room with a city view is 175 a night.
M: 175 a night ! That’s highway robbery!
W: If you think that’s too steep, there are a few other options. We can get a courtyard room with no view for 120 a night or a room with an obstructed or peek-a-boo ocean views for 130 a night.
M: I don’t really care which type of room we get as long as we don’t end up with a room on the ground floor. I don’t like having people walking back and forth outside my window all night.
W: Okay, I can request a room on an upper floor. You really don’t have a preference
M: No, not really.
W: There is a penthouse room for 400 a night.
M: What ! For that price, I’d better get a view of the Eiffel Tower, the Parthenon, and the Great Wall of China!

【答案】17. A 18. B 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】W: For millions of Americans, the most wonderful day of the year is December 25 Christmas.
For one thing, it marks the end of the busy time of year. Many people need a rest after weeks of buying gifts, going to parties, organizing travel and getting their homes ready for the holiday. With all this, it is often said that Christmas has lost its meaning as the birthday of Jesus Christ. Some churches in the United States have called off Christmas Day services, so people can spend the day with their families. Another important part of the Christmas season is music. Among traditional carols, one of the most popular is “Silent Night”. But not all Americans celebrate Christmas. And even those who do might not celebrate it as a religious holiday. This is true of Christians as well as non-Christians. Still, they treat it as a special day.
And it is hard to think of anyone that Christmas is more special for than children. Of course, this has a lot to do with the tradition of a kindly old man with a big belly and a bright red suit. Children know Santa Claus as the one who leaves gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve.

24. What happened to Nenad in 2015
A. His disease got worse. B. He learned to perform.
C. He began to play the guitar. D. His acting journey ended.
25. What caused Nenad to have hopes for life again
A. Organizing social events. B. Taking his mind off his work.
C. Setting up Ping Pong Parkinson. D. Playing ping-pong with his friend.
26. What was people’s attitude to Nenad’s words about ping-pong at first
A. Uncertain. B. Favorable. C. Uninterested. D. Curious.
27. What’s the best title for the passage
A. Nenad’s fighting against Parkinson
B. The benefits of playing ping-pong
C. The severity of Parkinson’s disease
D. The sporting experience of Nenad
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. A

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. A 35. B

Learning to pronounce English words correctly can be one of the hardest parts of learning English. Here are some tips to help you pronounce even the difficult English words correctly.
Learn to listen. Before you learn how to speak, you’ll need to learn how to listen. ___36___ Did the speaker sleep or slip Did he hurt his chin (下巴) or his shin If you can hear the difference, it will be easier to speak the difference.
___37___ When you speak, you move your mouth. How you move your mouth affects how you pronounce a word. The first step to correcting your mouth shape is to notice it and pay attention. There are a few ways you can check that your mouth and lips are making the correct shape, for example, using a mirror (镜子). ___38___
Pay attention to your tongue (舌头). The main difference between rice and lice is in your tongue. When you speak, you move your tongue to make sounds. You probably didn’t even notice that, since you do it without thinking. To improve your English pronunciation, it’s a good idea to check what your tongue is doing.
Each time your chin touches your hand, that’s a syllable.
Pronunciation is important for you to learn English well. Just remember: Practice makes perfect!
A. Notice how your mouth and lips move.
B. You can even write the word down in parts.
C. Pronouncing them correctly is all in the tongue!

G. This is by far the simplest way to tell what your mouth is doing while you talk.
【答案】36. D 37. A 38. G 39. C 40. E
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章介绍了学习正确发音的重要性,并给出了一些方法来帮助学习者正确发音。
【36题详解】
上文“Learn to listen. Before you learn how to speak, you’ll need to learn how to listen. (学会倾听。在你学会如何说话之前,你需要学会如何倾听。)”提到了人在学会如何说话之前,需要学会如何倾听。下文“Did the speaker sleep or slip Did he hurt his chin or his shin (说话的人是睡着了还是滑倒了 他伤到了下巴还是胫骨 )”提到了有些词是难以分辨的,引出D项(当你在听的时候,有些声音很难区分。)承接上文,引出下文的具体容易听混的例子。故选D项。
【37题详解】
下文“When you speak. you move your mouth. How you move your mouth affects how you pronounce a word.(当你说话的时候。你动你的嘴。你嘴巴的移动方式会影响你发音的方式。)”提到了嘴的移动会影响到发音,因此A项(注意你的嘴和嘴唇是如何移动的。)作为本段的话题句是合适的,是具体的正确发音的做法之一。故选A项。
【38题详解】
上文“There are a few ways you can check that your mouth and lips are making the correct shape, for example, using a mirror.(有几种方法可以检查你的嘴和嘴唇的形状是否正确,例如,用镜子。) ”举例说明如何练习发音,G项(到目前为止,这是判断你说话时嘴在做什么的最简单的方法。)承接上文,this指的是镜子练习的方法。故选G项。
【39题详解】
前文“Pay attention to your tongue. The main difference between rice and lice is in your tongue. When you speak, you move your tongue to make sounds. You probably didn’t even notice that, since you do it without thinking. To improve your English pronunciation, it’s a good idea to check what your tongue is doing. Some difficult sounds for non-native speakers to make are the letters “L” and “R”, and the sound “TH”. (注意你的舌头。米饭和虱子的主要区别在于你的舌头。当你说话时,你移动舌头来发出声音。你可能根本没有注意到,因为你是不假思索地做的。为了提高你的英语发音,检查你的舌头在做什么是一个好主意。对于非英语国家的人来说,发字母“L”和“R”以及“TH”是比较困难的。) ”提到了发音时舌头的重要性,因此C项(正确的发音全在舌头上!)与段首句首尾呼应,故选C项。
【40题详解】
上文“Break words down into sounds. Words are made up of syllables, or parts. The word “syllable”, for example, has three syllables: syl-la-ble. (把单词分解成声音。单词是由音节或部分组成的。例如,单词“syllable”有三个音节:syl-la-ble。)”提到了把单词分解成不同的声音部分,即按音节划分整个单词,因此E项(把单词分成部分可以使它们更容易发音。)说明了那样做的原因,故选E项。

72..第二节 读后续写 (满分25分)
72. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When his sister Lily came in, he was sitting expressionlessly by the desk, just staring out of the window.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答

On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“You don’t look happy, Marc. What’s wrong ” she said. Explaining what had happened, especially the bet between him and Huck, he told Lily his decision. He wanted to make careful preparations for the exam, but ran into difficulties with math. He was at a loss what to do next. “Don’t worry! I’ll help you. Just be confident!” replied Lily. The following days, Marc worked very hard and made great progress. Gradually, his confidence grew and he could solve math problems with ease, with the instructions appearing in his brain as if the teacher was standing at his side .
On the day of the exam, Marc went to school with great confidence. He met Huck in the classroom, who looked delighted as if he was bound to win. But Marc didn’t care. When the exam began, Marc answered all the questions as best as he could. Several days later, the result came out. It turned out that Marc did much better than Huck. “Well done,” said Mom. “We could go to see a movie to celebrate, and you can choose one.” “I think Lily should choose,” said Marc. “I would never have gained such a great achievement without her help and encouragement .”
