[句式解构] “what”在此句中引导表语从句,并充当从句的表语。
what在名词性从句中可以充当主语、表语和宾语,根据不同的语境有以下几种不同的含义:
(1)表示“……的东西或事情”(what=the thing that)
They've done what they can to help her.
他们已经尽力帮助了她。
(2)表示“……的人或……的样子”(what=the person that.../the appearance of...)
He is no longer what he was.他已经不是以前的那个样子了。
(3)表示“……的数量或数目”(what=the amount that)

1.语法现象感知
①At the start of the detox, over 100 students had been persuaded to stop using social media, in ANY form, for seven days.
②At the start of the detox, people had persuaded over 100 students to stop using social media, in ANY form, for seven days.
③I was sent to the village last month to see how the development plan had been carried out in the past two years.
④I was sent to the village last month to see how the people had carried out the development plan in the past two years.
2.语法规则理解
(1)①③句用的是过去完成时的被动语态,②④句用的是过去完成时态。
(2)过去完成时的被动语态构成:had been+过去分词。
【语法探究·核心突破】
1.理解概念
过去完成时的被动语态,表示在过去某一时刻或某一动作之前发生的动作的被动语态,句中常用by, before, until, when等词引导时间状语。
2.基本结构
(1)肯定句结构:主语+had been done+其他成分Five new buildings had been built by the end of last year.截至去年年底,已经建成了五座新楼。
(2)否定句结构:主语+had not been done+其他成分
The classroom had not been cleaned before the teacher came.老师来之前教室还没有打扫干净。
(3)疑问句结构:had+主语+been done+其他成分
Had many buildings been destroyed before the hurricane ended
在飓风结束前,许多建筑物被毁了吗?
3.基本用法
(1)表示过去某一时间以前已经完成的动作,常与by, before等引导的时间状语连用。
By the time he got to the school, the first period had been finished.
当他到达学校的时候,第一节课已经结束了。
Had the new plan been discussed before the meeting
这个新计划在会议之前被讨论过吗?
(2)在told, said, knew, heard, thought等动词之后的宾语从句中,若表示过去某一被动动作时,用过去完成时。
They said the production costs had been reduced.
他们说生产成本已经被降低了。
The boy was reminded that his homework had not been handed in.
这个男孩被提醒他的家庭作业还没交。
The media reported more than 1,000 people had been killed in the earthquake.
媒体报道超过1 000人在地震中死亡。
(3)根据语意可以判断出动作先后的被动语态,用过去完成时。
As the assignment had been done, he went on to search the Internet.
任务已经完成了,他继续开始上网。
He did what he had been told to.
他按照之前被告诉的去做。
【微点拨】 当从句由after, before, when或as soon as引导时,主句和从句都可以用一般过去时。
When he arrived, he called her.
They locked the door before they left.
4.拓展用法
(1)在It was the first/second/...time that...从句中,主语是动作的承受者时,要用过去完成时的被动语态。
It was the second time that his smartphone had been stolen.这是他的智能手机第二次被盗。
(2)在虚拟语气中,条件句表示与过去的事实相反,且主语是动作的承受者时,要用过去完成时的被动语态。例如:
If I had been invited earlier, I would have gone with you.
如果我早点被邀请,我会和你一起去的。
(3)在固定结构no sooner... than (一……就……), hardly... when... (一……就……)中,no sooner和hardly与过去完成时连用。
No sooner had he finished his homework than the bell rang.
他一完成作业铃就响了。
