Shirley Raines was presented with the 2021 CNN Hero of the Year, as she offered hope to the homeless people living on skid row (贫民区) in Los Angeles. Then what inspired her to do so
In 1990, Raines’ 2-year-old son died from accidental poisoning. This event caused her a lot of pain, and the pain lasted for many years. Raines didn’t know what to do about it. And she couldn’t figure out what she was living for. Until one day about several years ago, Raines visited the skid row with a friend who worked as a volunteer. She met a lot of homeless people there and realized that they badly needed help, not just in finding a home, but in finding themselves, including their own worth and beauty.
Then, Raines forgot the pain that fate had given her. She devoted herself to helping the homeless. Raines started to do voluntary work every Saturday. As she got to know the homeless, they often praised her for her make-up, hair, and style. She then started to make the homeless up. They loved it, and she loved it. Thus, Raines found the purpose of her life. She started an outdoor beauty salon (美容院) to serve the homeless.
Raines also started sharing photos on Instagram, and even live-streaming some of her events so that more people would join her. Things took off, and Raines formed Beauty 2 the Streetz, a non-profit group that provides free food, clothing, and make-up services for the homeless. Her fans quickly began donating to increase her impact. So far, the number of her fans has grown to over 200,000, including many beauty professionals. Some of them regularly donate money to keep the group running. Others spare some time to help Raines serve the homeless. So far, Raines has made a real impact on people’s lives, and she has been considered as a role model for a great number of people.
24. What caused Shirley Raines to help the homeless
A. The death of her son. B. The visit to the skid row.
C. The feeling of homesickness. D. The encouragement from her friend.
25. Why did Shirley Raines share her things on Instagram
A. To earn more money. B. To find greater fame.
C. To teach people to make themselves up. D. To call on more people to help the homeless.
26. Which of the following can best describe Shirley Raines
A. Caring, capable and influential. B. Caring, straightforward and sensible.
C. Straightforward, warm-hearted and capable. D. Warm-hearted, sensible and influential.
27. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To advertise Beauty 2 the Streetz. B. To inspire more people to be volunteers.
C. To help the homeless gain more attention. D. To introduce Shirley Raines and her deeds.

Lionfish certainly aren’t the fastest predators (捕食性动物) at sea, but new research suggests that they can catch swift prey in an unhurried way, moving slowly in pursuit until the perfect moment to strike. “The finding may help explain part of the lionfish’s impact as an invasive (侵入的) species, and reveals a hunting approach that other relatively slow predators use,” researchers said.
Born with brightly colored stripes, lionfish often use coral reefs (珊瑚) as a protection and remain undetected long enough to follow and attack small fish. But the predators also feed in open water where they’re more visible. Curious about how these slow swimmers hunt in plain view, Ashley Peterson, a professor at the University of California, and her colleagues placed some red lionfish in a tank and recorded them as they chased down the green chromis, a kind of small reef fish. In 14 of the 23 trials, the lionfish successfully swallowed their prey. They also captured the chromis in 74 percent of the trials where the lionfish made attempts to strike.
On average, chromis swam about twice as fast as lionfish. But chromis still fell victim to the way lionfish hunted — lionfish swim towards chromis, aiming for the prey’s current position. “If they’re interested in something, they never give up,” Peterson said. In contrast, the prey fish does bursts of fast swimming along with short pauses. “Over time, lionfish will take advantage of all those pauses to get closer and closer until they capture the prey,” Peterson said. “It would be interesting to see how lionfish’s chase plays out.”
If lionfish do use the strategy in the wild and the prey reacts similarly, it’s possible that the hunting method could contribute to the destructive potential of their invasion in the Caribbean, the western Atlantic and the Mediterranean, where the fish are eating native ocean animals and disrupting food webs. But other factors, such as lionfish’s huge appetite and fruitful reproduction, could be more influential on the invasiveness.
28. What does the new research focus on
A. Defensive measures of lionfish. B. Slow predators’ hunting strategy.
C. The impact of different predators. D. Approaches to handling invasive species.
29. What does the author want to explain by the trials in Paragraph 2
A. Small fish are much safer in open water.
B. Lionfish always pretend not to see their prey.
C. Lionfish have a high rate of successful strikes.
D. Fast prey tends not to be long-distance swimmers.
30. What can be inferred about lionfish during their hunting process
A. They quietly pick up their speed.
B. They prefer more challenging prey.
C. They like to play tricky games with their prey.
D. They show great perseverance in capturing their prey.
31. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us
A. Slow predators may have the same characteristics.
B. Lionfish’ hunting style makes them dominate the oceans.
C. It’s time to deal with the limitations of the wild environment.
D. Lionfish are harmful to ocean creatures as an invasive species.
D
The confidence people place in science is frequently based not on what it really is, but on what people would like it to be. When I asked my students how they would define science, many of them replied that it’s an objective way of discovering certainties about the world. But science cannot provide certainties.
Actually, doubt and science often go hand in hand. Science, when properly functioning, questions accepted understandings and brings both new knowledge and new questions — not certainty. Doubt does not create trust, nor does it help public understanding. So why should people trust a process that seems to require a troublesome state of uncertainty without always providing solid solutions
As a historian of science, I would argue that it’s the responsibility of scientists and historians of science to show that the real power of science lies precisely in what is often regarded as its weakness: its drive to question and challenge accepted understandings. Indeed, the scientific approach requires changing our understanding of the natural world whenever new evidence arises from either experimentation or observation. Scientific findings are temporary understandings that involve the state of knowledge at a given moment. In the long run, many of them are challenged and even overturned. Doubt might be troubling, but it pushes us towards a better understanding. Certainties, reassuring as they may seem, prevent the scientific process.
Scientists understand this, but in the dynamic between the public and science, there are two opposite misconceptions (误解). The first is a form of blind scientism — a belief that science is unquestionable and has the capacity to solve all problems. Such an idealized representation actually ignores the universal existence of controversy, conflict and error at the very heart of the scientific world.
32. What’s the real power of science according to the author
A. It provides solid solutions. B. It defends accepted understandings.
C. It discovers certainties about the world. D. It keeps bringing questions and challenges.
33. What does the underlined word “reassuring” probably mean
A. Challenging. B. Comforting. C. Disappointing. D. Surprising.
34. What may be the belief of the second misconception
A. Science is doubtful but useful. B. Science is objective but impractical.
C. Science is unreliable and of little use. D. Science is unchallengeable and a cure-all.
35. What can be the best title for the text
A. Why Is Doubt Vital to Science B. Why Should We Trust Scientists
C. What Is the Weakness of Science D. What Is Scientists’ Responsibility

Urban populations are projected to increase by 2.5 billion by 2050. __37__ But despite the rise in city-based farms, there’s still a lot we don’t know about them, including the economic and environmental costs.
Florian Payen, an environmental scientist, and his colleagues looked at previous studies done in 53 countries where crops were grown in different urban environments, including “grey” spaces such as rooftops, and by using different growing methods. __38__ Just as importantly, they revealed the most commonly-grown types of crops and the most effective growing methods.
It’s known that the benefit of urban farming is a reduction in food miles. __39__ In one study, researchers analyzed the carbon footprint of different vegetables grown in greenhouses in Canada and that of the importing vegetables from the USA. “They found that it was less carbon-intensive to import the crops because of the high energy input required to grow them locally in greenhouses,” says Payen.
__40__ Urban agriculture has the potential to enhance local ecosystems, attracting pollinators (传粉媒介) such as bees and birds that boost urban biodiversity while providing more green spaces to help keep cities cool and counter the urban heat island effect.
A. But there are other benefits.
B. Urban agriculture can help feed our growing cities.
C. It’s well worth investing in rooftop gardens or greenhouses.
D. The farm was one of the farms the company had set up in cities.
E. Urban agriculture in any given city can take lots of different forms.
F. However, urban-grown crops aren’t a more environmentally friendly option.
G. Surprisingly, they found little difference in overall yields (产量) between indoor and outdoor spaces.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When Evan was 13, he wanted to have a dog. His mom Octavia refused since raising a dog would need lots of attention and care.
The boy once joined the Forest Exploration club of his school where Octavia taught. And the mother was in charge of the club. One morning, guided by Octavia, Evan and his schoolmates went hiking in a forest. During the hike, some purple flowers caught Evan’s eye. Evan thought those beautiful flowers could surely impress his mother. So he walked to the riverside secretly to pick those flowers. Unfortunately, Evan got separated from the group and got lost.
He anxiously kept walking, hoping he could catch up with the group. Suddenly, a dog appeared. At first, Evan thought it might be a wolf, so he tensed and stood there still. When the dog got closer, he saw its tail wagging (摇摆) gently.
“Oh, buddy. You scared me,” he said, petting the dog. “You must be a stray (走失的) dog, huh ” The dog looked at him with the most sincere expression. Evan wanted to find his way home, not only for himself but also for the animal. Therefore, he walked again. The moment Octavia realized Evan was gone, she and others began looking for Evan desperately, but in vain.
It was getting darker and colder. Evan discovered a cave. He went inside and made a fire to keep warm. He knew his mom and other schoolmates must have been searching the forest for him. “Buddy, let’s wait here and see if we can hear my group calling,” Evan told the dog. And they sat near each other. Before long, Evan fell asleep.
At some point, he heard the sound of animal growling (低声吼叫) and noticed the dog at the entrance of their shelter. The dog was growling at something that Evan couldn’t see well. But there was another animal growling back. Evan wiped his eyes and tried to see what made the dog so alert and angry. He then saw a big fox, and said to himself, “Thank goodness! I’m not alone!” But he was still frightened. The fox moved forward, wanting to attack Evan.

Dear Tom,
I’m so sorry to hear that you feel upset about your exam results. Don’t worry. I’m writing to
give you some suggestions, which I hope will help you.
On the one hand, keep a positive attitude. As the saying goes, failure is the mother of success.
Don’t be afraid of failure; instead, you should learn something from failure and then try your best to
change yourself. On the other hand, having a good command of related knowledge and learning
skills will help you make great progress in the future.
I hope my advice will be helpful. If there are any other questions, please feel free to contact me.
I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
Writing 2
Without stepping back, the brave dog continued barking, ready to attack the fox. Daring not to
step forward anymore, the fox stood still for minutes while the dog remained before Evan, keeping
barking and exposing his sharp teeth. Eventually, the fox left; the dog stopped growling but stayed
aware. Minutes later, the dog eased and returned to Evan’s side, providing much-needed warmth.
Evan felt safe and so thankful. When day broke, Evan continued walking to look for his group, and
the dog accompanied him. At last, he heard his mom yelling out his name.
“It’s my mom! Let’s go!” Evan excitedly told the dog and ran to Octavia. “Evan! Evan!”
Octavia cried and Evan rushed into her arms. Evan’s eyes clouded with tears. He hugged his mother
and apologized for secretly walking away from the group. Then, Evan explained what the dog had
done for him and begged not to leave the dog. Octavia happily nodded. After returning home,
Octavia prepared a bowl for the dog and said, “Thank you for keeping my boy safe.” During the
following days, they didn’t find the dog’s owner. Thus, Evan asked, “Mom, can we keep him ”
“Sure, he’s a family member now,” Octavia agreed.

ask those questions too, but I may not move out soon. The thought of leaving them fills me with
fear. What if one of them falls over What if they both have a fall together
W: That would be terrible.

W: It’s a pretty good conference, huh
M: Yeah. All speakers are well-known and knowledgeable in the subject matter. Did you listen to
John Miller’s speech on how to avoid business risks this morning
W: No, I missed that one. I went to a speech at Alan Brown Hall. The speaker was David
Thompson.
M: Oh, that should be a good one, too. I attended his lecture last year. By the way, there will be a
workshop this afternoon on how to motivate employees. Are you interested
W: Sure. I was promoted to the position of manager a few months ago. And I have to manage a staff
of 12 people. It can be quite a difficult situation sometimes. That’s why I am here today.
M: Same here. I only have seven people reporting to me. Yet, sometimes I feel like pulling my hair
out. I need to find a way to create harmony within my department.

W: Welcome to Star Fitness Club. I’m Tina Harrison. Before you start, I’d like to offer you some
tips. We all know that regular exercise is important, but few of us know how to exercise properly.
I’ve seen many people make the same workout mistakes in this place. One mistake people often
make is sticking to the same routine. It is not good for building up your muscles. I’d like to suggest
that you change your routine every other month. What’s more, you can try different kinds of
workouts, such as jogging, biking, or swimming. This can help keep your whole body in shape.
Another mistake most people make is to workout intensely almost every day. You need to give your
body a break, and allow time for the muscles to grow. It is not the harder the better. Two hard
workout days every week is enough. If you really hate to skip a day, you can plan easy exercises on
other days. However, experts’ suggestion is that you take one day off completely each week.
