A
Agriculture may feed the world, but it is also contributing to environmental problems. Agriculture production uses about 70% of the Earth’s fresh water and makes up about a third of greenhouse gas emissions. But it doesn’t have to. Farming is moving inside, and farmers aren’t exactly what they used to be.
Take for example Grover and Phil, two robots, or farmers of the future, working at Iron Ox, a farm tech company in Silicon Valley, planning to set up farms around the country in order to grow crops closer to consumers in a greener way. “We have different robots that are looking after the plants. They can check and scan them for issues, and change the amount of nutrients plants get and the amount of water they get, explained Brandon Alexander, CEO of Iron Ox.
Iron Ox’s method is very different from what Alexander calls the “spray (喷洒) and pray” applying to agriculture on a Texas farm, where he grew up and more chemicals create more quantity at the expense of quality. “Besides, a lot of the water in field farming gets just washed out and never actually reaches the plants. And when 70% of your fresh water is going into farming, only 10% of that actually reaches the plants. It’s just generating a lot of waste,” he said. However, the indoor farming allows farmers to grow any crop at any time, regardless of climate change. It also uses hydroponics (无土栽培), growing crops without soil so water goes directly to the roots.
“In the indoor farming industry today, even with all the investments into it, these investments are a drop in the bucket in spite of the great potential of this new industry,” he added.
Iron Ox is now magnifying its business in more states. Alexander says the company will produce about 100 times more produce over the next 18 months than it’s currently producing to satisfy greater needs.
21.Which of the following may be Grover and Phil’s work
A.Producing nutrients for crops. B.Watering plants scientifically.
C.Curing plants of their diseases. D.Delivering produce to consumers.
22.What can we infer from Paragraph 3
A.Chemicals contribute a lot to the quality of crops.
B.Hydroponics is impractical in growing crops now.
C.Indoor farming has advantages over traditional one.
D.It takes much more time for crops to grow indoors.
23.What does Alexander say about indoor farming in Paragraph 4
A.Its investments are far from enough. B.It causes a waste of more water.
C.It needs buckets to grow crops. D.It is unlikely to attract investments.
24.What does the underlined word “magnifying” in the last paragraph mean
A.Changing. B.Reducing. C.Quitting. D.Expanding.
B
Just as with any other subject, people who learn sign language are learning a new skill and using their brains to do this, thus expanding their minds in a new field.
A research has been carried out which proves that deaf children who learn sign language at an early age are more likely to do well academically. This is partly due to their increased ability to communicate with those around them. However, it is also because sign language is not, as many people mistakenly think, a system of gestures representing words, but a complicated language system, just as the English which is used in this article. Thus, children who learn sign language have already learn about the way language works and is made up, which will help in future studies especially if they decide to learn to speak English, or any other spoken language.
A deaf child who can use sign language develops a sense of identity. This will lead to a happier and more confident child because they know their place in the world is secure.
Again, for non-deaf children and adults who learn sign language, the academic advantages spread into social and cultural ones. Learning a language gives rise to greater confidence for those people, as they are able to communicate with someone whose peers may struggle to do so. And the skills of language learning are easily transferable into learning other languages but also into other academic pursuits.
There can be no doubt that learning sigh languages is a useful attempt for anyone — whether they are deaf or non-deaf. The social and cultural advantages should not be taken lightly. And, especially with children, learning a language which helps people with a disadvantage may encourage them in the future to do more volunteering and other such work. They can be taught to hug all people regardless of their differences.
25.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.Academic advantages of deaf kids learning sign language.
B.Causes of deaf children learning sign language.
C.Approaches to helping deaf children recover.
D.Difficulties that deaf children meet in their language study.
26.Why does learning sign language make a deaf child happier
A.It makes a deaf child more humorous.
B.It provides a deaf child with a life without danger.
C.It helps a deaf child perform well in building up their body.
D.It gives a deaf child a sense of belonging.
27.What will a child learning sign language be like in the future
A.Extremely intelligent. B.Slightly imperfect.
C.Socially responsible. D.Financially successful.
28.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To discuss the different purposes for people to learn sign language.
B.To show it is important for both deaf children and non-deaf children to learn sign language.
C.To call on non-deaf children to learn sign language.
D.To attract deaf children to communicate with non-deaf children.

Whether you’ re a fearless adventurer seeking a scenic climb or a beginner outdoorsman eager to be close to nature, these four camping destinations will change your life.
Laugavegur, Iceland
Before snow falls upon the changeable rhyolite (流纹岩) mountains, book a cottage or a tent in the camp city as wild camping is not permitted here. Professionals advise hiking from north to south, which takes you across lava fields, wildflower-spotted grasslands, and to the twin glaciers (冰川) Eyjafjallaj kull and Mydralsj kull. Along the way, the mountains covered with various colors will appeal to you.
High Atlas Mountains, Morocco
Morocco’s most typical range is a bucket-list camping destination for daring travelers. Pass through remote Berber villages and walk a long way from hot desert to snow-capped peaks. You can follow ancient animal paths, though guides in this area are highly suggested. Many will employ the use of a camel to help with the load.
Tierra del Fuego, Chile
Tierra del Fuego is an explorer’s dream. Take a cross-border journey from Argentina to Chile through Radman and set up camp along one of the glacial lakes Blanco or Ofhidro. Animals like beavers are common in this area, and so are condors (秃鹰). Bed down in the grasslands beneath Jebel M’ goun, an extremely quiet peak.
Main Range, Kosciuszko National Park, Australia
Whether you fill your days with passing over the country’ s highest mountains, watching snowfalls or fishing in the glacial lakes, make sure to spend an evening appreciating the starry sky, which is certain to inspire awe (敬畏) in anyone witnessing this sight.

The traditional school year, with three months of vacation every summer, was first performed when America was an agricultural society and the summer months were needed for farm work. Since then, America has completely changed as a nation. Students no longer spend summers farming, but they aren’t in school, either. The average American student receives 13 weeks off from school each calendar year — with about 11 of those during the summer. Few other countries have more than seven weeks off in a school calendar.
With the U. S. left behind other countries in academics, it’s time to consider year-round schooling. One benefit of this change is that students will not fall victim to the “summer slide,” or the well-documented phenomenon where students forget some of the knowledge they have acquired when too much time is taken off from school. Decades of research shows that it can take from 8 to13 weeks at the beginning of every school year for students to get back to where they were before the summer holiday.
But year-round schooling isn’t just about academics. Teachers and students experience a closer relationship in year-round schools than they do in traditional schools and, in the absence of any long-term break, students do not feel detached from the school environment. These closer bonds and greater attachment pay off. Research shows that students in year-round schools are more self-confident and feel more positive about their schooling experience.
But don’t kids need time to relax Some childhood development experts believe that time off from school is vital to healthy development as kids are not designed to spend so much of their time inside classrooms and the summer break provides a perfect opportunity to get outside. The problem with this argument is that most children aren’t playing outside or even spending time with other kids. While some children visit summer camps, most stay at home, watching TV or playing games on electronic devices, which hardly benefits them.
The U. S. has changed from a farming economy to a knowledge-and innovation- based economy, so it makes sense for the school year to change as well.
32.Which is NOT mentioned as the benefit of year-round schooling
A.It will improve students’ academic performance.
B.It will strengthen students’ relationship with teachers.
C.It will enable students to learn about the outside world.
D.It will familiarize students with the school environment.
33.What can be learned about a long summer vacation from Paragraph 4
A.It allows most students to play outside.
B.It does little good to most students.
C.It makes students addicted to computer games.
D.It leads students to neglect their studies.
34.How does the author find the the traditional school year in the U. S. today
A.Well-grounded. B.Culture-bound. C.Welcomed. D.Outdated.
35.What is the best title for the text
A.Why the U. S. Is Left Behind in Academics
B.How the U. S. Society Has Been Changed
C.The Longest Vacation Needs to Be Changed
D.The U. S. Should Switch to Year-round Schooling
第二节七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
When it comes to Al in business, we often hear about it in relation to automation and loss of jobs, but in what ways is Al changing companies and the larger economy that don’t involve doom-and-gloom mass unemployment predictions 36 Here are a few ways Al is aiding companies without replacing employees.
Better hiring practices
37 There are experiments that show that, naturally, the results of interviews are much more biased than what Al does. In addition, AI looks at resumes in greater numbers than humans would be able to. And it selects the more promising candidates. One company that’s doing this is called Blendoor. It uses analytics to help identify where there may be bias in the hiring process.
More effective marketing.
Some AI software can analyze and optimize marketing email subject lines to increase open rates. One company in the UK, Phrasee, claims their software can outperform humans by up to 10 percent when it comes to email open rates. This can mean millions more in revenue. There are also companies like Acquisio, which analyzes advertising performance across multiple channels like Adwords, Bing, and social media and makes adjustments or suggestions about where advertising funds will yield the best results. 38
Saving customers money.
Energy companies can use AI to help customers reduce their electricity bills, saving their money while helping the environment. 39 Insurance companies, meanwhile, can base their premiums on AI models that more accurately access risk. Before, they might not insure the ones who felt like high risk or charge them too much, or they would charge them too little, and then it would cost the company money.
40
Several companies, particularly in energy and transportation, use AI image processing technology to inspect infrastructure and prevent equipment failure or leaks before they happen. If they fail first and then you fix them, it’s very expensive. You want to predict if something needs attention now and point to where it’s useful for employees to go.
A.If you’re doing research, you can have Al go out and look for relevant sources and information.
B.Companies are using artificial intelligence to remove some of the unconscious bias from hiring decisions.
C.Companies can also optimize their own energy use and cut down on the cost of electricity.
D.These are tools that help people use data, not a replacement for people.
E.Protecting and maintaining infrastructure.
F.A recent survey has found that companies currently use Al more often in computer-to-computer activities than in automating human activities.
G.More energy intensive to produce.

The Origin of Trick-or-treatOn October 31, hordes of children armed with Jack-o’-lantern-shaped buckets and pillow cases will take to the streets in 56 of sugar. Trick-or-treating for candy is equivalent to Halloween, but the 57 had to go through a centuries-long evolution (发展) to arrive at the place it is today. So how did the holiday become a chance for kids to get free sweets You can blame pagans (异教徒), Catholics, and candy companies.
Historians agree that a Celtic autumn festival called Samhain (萨温节) was the origin of modern Halloween. Samhain was a time to 58 the day symbolizing the last harvest of the year and the approach of the winter season. It was also a festival showing 59 to the dead. One way Celtics may have appeased (安抚) the spirits they believed still walked the Earth was by leaving treats on their doorsteps. When Catholics invaded Ireland in the 1st century CE, they rebranded (重塑) many pagan holidays to 60 their religion. November 1st became the “feasts of All Saints and All Souls,” and the day before it was dubbed “All-Hallows-Eve.” The new holidays looked a lot different from the original Celtic festival, but many traditions 61 around, including the practice of offering food to the dead. The food of choice for Christians became “soul cakes,” small pastries usually baked with expensive 62 and spices like currants and saffron.
Instead of leaving them outside for passing ghosts, soul cakes were given to beggars who went door-to-door promising to pray for souls of the deceased (已故的) in 63 for something to eat. Sometimes they wore costumes to honour the saints — something pagans originally did to avoid being disturbed by evil spirits. The ritual, known as “souling”, is believed to have planted the seeds for modern-day trick-or-treating.
It wasn’t until the 1950s that trick-or-treat gained popularity in the US. Following the Great Depression and World War Ⅱ, the suburbs were booming, and people were looking for more 64 to have fun and get to know their neighbours. The old practice of souling made a comeback and gave kids a chance to dress up in costumes and walk around their mon trick-or-treat offerings included nuts, coins, and homemade baked goods (“treats” that most kids would turn their noses up at today).

Our friendship can be traced back to our college days when I first met Rishi. We had our own share of first impression about each other. Mine was—she’s a lovely and charming personality. Hers was—I look like an arrogant (傲慢的) personality. I don’t blame her for this. Many of my close friends had the same view when they first met me. Blame it on me being a shy person to some extent.
We became really close within a short period of time. Ours was a group of four people divided into 2 each during our final year when we both chose advertising as our specialisation and the other two journalism. Back then, I was a regular user of BBM Messenger and hardly used WhatsApp.
On one specific occasion, we had really bad argument about a failed project. The usual blame game was on. We decided to put it past us and focus on our studies. During this time, she once handed me her phone to show me a picture. While I was going through that, I came across a message from a particular WhatsApp group that comprises of her and my other two friends. I asked her permission to view the group. She had a blank expression on her face. But she allowed me to go ahead.
I was in shock while going through their messages. Not really positive things were said about me in particular. It shook me. Because these were the people I considered my friends. I broke down in front of her. She apologised. But I felt cheated on. I told her about my decision of not wanting to continue this friendship further. We both missed each other. But neither of us wanted to give the last try.

Nezha has undoubtedly become one of the most popular cartoon movies in China.
The movie is adapted from a famous Chinese fairy tale. Different from the previous versions, this movie adopts a unique way to unfold the story. The theme of the film is the main character Nezha’s growth story of fighting against his own destiny. Apart from the fantastic scenes, many inspiring lines like “I’m the master of my own destiny” impress the audiences greatly.
The film is thought-provoking. It also reflects people in real life who hold their destiny in their own hands and stick to their dreams.

Then came our official last trip. I hanged out with my other friends while she with the other two girls. I wasn’t enjoying this trip at all, which she could make out. When she saw me approaching the washroom, she followed me in and opened the door. I didn’t know how to react. She gave me a tight hug and broke down. My tears were also out of control. We knew we both wanted to be in each other’s company. We promised to grow mature and let it not affect our friendship.
It’s been almost 7 years after graduation since we picked up our friendship. She’s one of the few people I really count on in my life. She’s been with me through all my struggles, helping me constantly to grow into a better individual. So have I. The only learning from our relationship is—if someone is meant to be in your life, they will ensure they stay around some way or the other. Willingness to keep a relationship should come from both the sides.
